Inside the house, the tension was suffocating. Karen stormed upstairs without another word, her heels echoing on the wooden staircase. Jack lingered in the living room, his phone clutched in his hand. His shoulders slumped as though the weight of his secrets had finally become unbearable.

I stood by the door, unsure whether to follow my mother or seize the opportunity and talk to Jack. My thoughts were spinning, but one thing was clear—this was spiraling out of control.

Jack turned toward me, his face a mix of exhaustion and frustration. “Sophia, we need to talk.”

The words sent a jolt through me. Slowly, I nodded, and he motioned for me to follow him into his study.

The room was dimly lit, the faint smell of leather and cigar smoke clinging to the air. Jack closed the door behind us and sat heavily in the chair behind his desk. He gestured for me to sit across from him, but I remained standing, my arms crossed defensively.

“What's the 20 million dollars about?” I asked, my voice sha

It all began with a dare, a reckless challenge from my friends to kiss a stranger at the party. I should have said no, but I had just broken up with my boyfriend, and the alcohol with the music had lowered my inhibitions to a dangerous level. “You can do it Sophia, don't be shy." My friends cheered, their voices buoyed by the party atmosphere. I scanned the room, my eyes finally locking on a mysterious figure standing in the corner. He was older, maybe in his forties, but still strikingly handsome with an air of mystery that drew me in. It felt as if he were waiting for me, and in that moment, I felt a thrill of excitement mixed with a hint of fear as I made my way towards him, my heart pounding. As I approached him, he smiled, and his eyes crinkled at the corners. I felt a flutter in my chest, and my heart raced with anticipation. We didn't exchange words; we didn't need to. The music and the moment said it all. He pulled me close, and our lips met in a passionate kiss. Time se

The stranger who had haunted my dreams, the one who had claimed my lips in a passionate kiss, now stood in my living room, smiling at my mother with a familiarity that made my blood run cold. My mother's voice, dripping with happiness, noticed me and gleefully rushed to hug me. "Sophia, you're home," she chimed, oblivious to my horror. But I couldn't reciprocate her enthusiasm. My eyes were fixed on him, my mind reeling with questions. How did he end up here, in my home, with my mother? His gaze locked onto mine, piercing me with a gleam that made my skin crawl. My mother's smile was so huge on her face, a wicked contrast to my despair. "Sophia, meet Jack, your new stepfather," she announced, her words dripping with excitement. I felt like I'd been punched in the gut, my breath knocked out of me. Stepfather? No, this couldn't be happening. My world crumbled around me, the room spinning with a s

Taking a deep breath, I opened the door. Inside was quiet. With my heart pounding in my chest, I made my way to my mother's bedroom, each step felt heavier than the last. When I reached her room, I knocked hesitantly. “Sophia, is that you? Come in," she said. Inside, I see my mother packing her belongings. “Mom, what's going on?" I asked, my voice surprisingly steady. My mother looked up, her smile faltering at the sight of the gloom on my face. “Sophia, why aren't you happy for me?" she asked, her voice filled with disappointment. “Why did you act like that towards Jack?" “I'm sorry mother, but..." My voice left me, I couldn't find the courage to utter another word.“Jack is everything we've been praying for. He is kind, loving, and a billionaire." My mother says, her eyes popping with excitement.“A billionaire?" “Yeah, your mother is getting married to a billionaire!" she announced gleefully. “And we're moving into his mansion this weekend." “What?" “Don't you want to?"

The next day, as we loaded the last of the boxes into the car, my nerves were on edge. Jack arrived to help with the move, his presence making my heart flutter. I avoided his gaze, focusing on the task at hand. When I saw him and my mother holding hands my skin crawled. I couldn't decipher my feelings - disgust or jealousy? My mother's happiness was at stake, and I couldn't let my emotions get in the way.Rachel showed up later, her usual cheerful demeanor a stark contrast to the turmoil inside me. She gave me a supportive smile, and I felt a bit of my resolve strengthen. “Hey, need any help?” she asked, already grabbing a box. “Thanks,” I muttered, grateful for her presence. As we continued packing, Jack approached me, his expression unreadable. “Sophia, can we talk?”I stiffened but nodded. “Sure,” I said, putting down the bo

Rachel and I slipped away to one of the many guest rooms, closing the door behind us. Rachel turned to me, her face serious. “Sophia, what's going on? You can’t keep this bottled up. It’s eating you alive.”I sank onto the bed, burying my face in my hands. “I know, but what am I supposed to do? If I tell her, it will destroy her.” Rachel sat beside me, her voice gentle but firm. “You don’t have to tell her if you don't want to. But can you cope living under the same roof with him?" I looked up, tears in my eyes. “I don't think I know how to deal with this." Rachel took a deep breath. “Maybe you should try talking to Jack again. He needs to understand how this is affecting you. Maybe he can help find a way to make this easier.” I shook my head, feeling hopeless. “I tried, Rachel. He just wants to forget it happened. But I can’t forget. Every time I see them together, it’s like a knife in my heart.” Rachel squinted her eyes at me. “Sophia, do you have feelings for Jack?" I shoo

"Your time is almost up, Jack. $20 million, or the truth comes out. You have until midnight."“Jack…” Karen’s voice was barely a whisper, trembling with disbelief. “What is this? Who’s blackmailing you?”Jack slammed on the brakes, bringing the car to a sudden halt at the side of the road. The tires screeched, and my heart lurched in my chest. “Karen, give me the phone,” he demanded, his voice low and dangerous.“No.” Karen held the phone tightly, her eyes blazing with anger now. “You’re being blackmailed for twenty million dollars? What truth are they threatening to expose?”“This isn’t the place,” Jack snapped, his voice taut with frustration. “We’ll talk about it when we get home.”“No!” Karen’s voice rose, her anger boiling over. “We’ll talk about it now, Jack. What are you hiding? What truth could possibly be worth twenty million dollars?”I shrank back in my seat, my heart pounding as I watched the scene unfold. Her question lingered in the air, each word slicing through the tension like a blade. My throat tightened, and I struggled to meet her gaze. Was there something I wasn’t telling her? Everything, in fact. The affair. The secrets. The baby. My entire world felt like it was unraveling at the seams, and I was the thread pulling it apart.“I…” My voice faltered. Jack’s gaze was burning into me, silent but commanding. His grip on his glass tightened to the point I thought it might shatter. Karen’s eyes were pleading yet sharp, searching for an answer she probably didn’t want to hear. I swallowed hard, trying to gather the courage to speak.“Nothing, Mom,” I finally said, my voice barely above a whisper. “I just feel overwhelmed. That’s all.”Karen leaned back slightly, her lips pressing into a thin line. She didn’t seem convinced, and the weight of her disappointment crushed me. “Overwhelmed?” she echoed, her tone tinged with disbelief. “Sophia, if something is going on, I need you to tell

The restaurant was elegant, dimly lit, with soft jazz music playing in the background. Jack sat at the head of the table, his eyes flickering between I and my mother. Karen had called him at the office to inform him of the dinner date she had made reservation for the family.“I thought it would be nice,” Karen said, her voice a little too sweet, “for the three of us to have dinner together. To, you know, clear the air. A lot has happened lately.”Jack forced a smile, but it didn’t reach his eyes. Had Sophia said something? Has she told Karen the truth? —No, Sophia wouldn't. His mind drifts back to his main worry. Twenty million dollars? Time was ticking, and he still didn't know what to do.Sitting to Jack's right, I shifted uncomfortably in my seat. The tension tonight was unbearable. My mother's impromptu dinner date has given me a cause to worry. Did she know the truth? Alex's expression hardens, and he leans forward, resting his elbows on the table. "Sophia, you're playing with fire. Do you really think you can control this? That Jack can?"I swallow hard, my hands gripping the edge of my chair. "I don't have a choice right now, Alex. Everything is so... tangled. If I tell her the truth now, it'll destroy her."His eyes narrow, and for a moment, he just stares at me, his jaw tightening. "And what about when she finds out on her own? Because she will. Secrets like this don’t stay buried forever."I look away, the weight of his words sinking into my chest like stones. "I know that," I whisper. "I know how messy this is. Don't tell her. Please, Alex."He leans back, crossing his arms, his expression unreadable. "I owe you no loyalty, Sophia . I have done the best I can for you. Jack's not my biological father, but he is still a very wealthy man." He trails off, a smirk forming on his face.I flinch at the sharpness in his tone but keep my gaze steady.

The laughter faded, leaving an unspoken tension lingering in the room, but for now, it felt comforting to have my mother’s support. I looked over at Jack, who shifted uncomfortably, his gaze dropping to the floor. He knew, as I did, that eventually, the truth would have to come out. But in this moment, having my mother’s encouragement brought a strange sense of calm.As the evening wore on, my mother began to ask gentle questions about how I was feeling, what my plans might look like, and whether I’d considered any next steps. She offered ideas about support, connecting me with her doctor, and even mentioned a friend of hers who’d been through a similar situation in her youth. Her presence was reassuring, filling the spaces of uncertainty with a steady warmth.Jack, however, remained mostly silent, watching the interaction between my mother and me with a guarded expression. I knew he was weighing the impact of this truth—and how much more complicated things would become once the full

When he finally approached me in the living room, there was a strange determination in his eyes.“I spoke to Margaret,” he said, his voice steady but strained. “She lied. Alex is not my son.”I felt a mixture of relief wash over me. "Really?"Jack nodded in response as he took a seat beside me, exhaling deeply as he rubbed h

I stood there, frozen, Alex’s words echoing in my mind. The weight of the ultimatum settled heavily over me, tightening like a vice around my heart.
