Staring at the white envelope in her hand with sad eyes, Rakia didn’t dare to open it. Her heart sank when she entered her superior’s room a few hours ago and received terrible news. The bus she was waiting for came; she turned her gaze towards the bus, then moved with Park steps onto the bus and sat by the window. She put the white envelope into a bag she slung over one shoulder. She tried to find topics for her to think about besides the bad news about her being laid off, but to no avail. It still hurts even though she wasn’t the only one laid off. She could have a career as a journalist at the television station, but instead, she kicked her out. Her cell phone rang, distracting her for a moment from the sadness and disappointment she was experiencing.

“Yeah, Ben, what’s wrong?” she asked with a slight smile. At least, when her fiancé called her, she still smiled a little amid sadness.

“I just want to say that tomorrow I will go to Brazil with the crew,” said Benjamin.

“Brazil? Why suddenly?” That sounded odd to Rakia.

“My client wanted the location of his pre-wedding photo to be changed, and he chose Brazil.” The silence between them.

“Honey, are you still there?” Benjamin said, removing the silence between them. Rakia nodded even though Ben didn’t see her.

“Yes, I’m here. May I come with you?” Rakia asked doubtfully but hoped Ben would say yes.

“How is your work?”

Rakia looked down and rubbed the surface of her nail with the tip of her other nail. She bit her lips. “I… am no longer working,” Rakia replied in a low voice.

“What does it mean? You stop?” Benjamin slightly raised his voice, making Rakia’s ears irritated.

“The television station where I work has laid off some employees, including me.” She tried to hold back her tears by biting her lip hard.

“So, can I come with you to Brazil?” Rakia repeated her request.

“Oh, Honey, I’m sorry about what you’re going through, but I’m sorry I couldn’t take you. Next time, we will go on vacation together again.

Rakia nodded with a single tear rolling down her cheek.

“Yeah, no problem; sorry for trying to interrupt your work.”

“No, Honey, see you later,” Ben said, and their conversation ended. When Rakia lowered the cell phone from her ear, the tears she was trying to contain were unbearable. Even in her current situation, he expected Benjamin to comfort her. She knew her fiancé was busy with his job as a professional photographer. But Rakia needed someone to comfort her, cheer her up. She wiped away the tears starting to roll down her face. She will marry Benjamin in a week, but she has to lose her job.

When the bus stopped at the first stop, Rakia chose to continue the journey even though she was stopping at this first stop. She wants to visit her best friend Lizzy’s house. Arriving in front of the woman’s house, Rakia pressed the bell; the homeowner opened the door at the first bell.

“Kia?! You....” Lizzy looked at her best friend inquisitively. Rakia could only smile.

“Why?” continued Lizzy, who originally wanted to ask directly.

“May I come in?” Rakia distracted Lizzy momentarily, and the woman lightly tapped her forehead, realizing her impoliteness. Rakia also followed Lizzy into the modest house. Rakia immediately sat on the fur rug in front of the television in the living room. She sat leaning on the sofa facing the television and threw her bag on the couch. Lizzy left Rakia to go to the kitchen to get a drink.

“Anything you want to say?” asked Lizzy as she came back from the kitchen and placed a tray on which were two cans of cola. Rakia stared at the cola can in front of her without blinking.

“I was laid off,” said Rakia finally. Her chest tightened as she said that. Lizzy couldn’t help but be surprised for a moment.

“But why?”

“I don’t know either; they just said to reduce the number of employees.” Rakia blinked, grabbed one of the cola cans, opened it, and took one gulp.

“Seriously? Do you still drink soda? You said you were going on a diet.” Rakia changed the subject after she sipped her cola, and her face scrunched up. She doesn’t like carbonated drinks, let alone alcohol. Lizzy chuckled.

“Only once in a while; after all, I managed to lose ten kilos,” she said as she stood up and spun around gracefully, showing off her slender body. Rakia sighed as she smiled crookedly. Lizzy returned to her seat, grabbed a rather large rectangular pillow nearby, and put it on her lap.

“How’s Ben? Does he already know this news?”

Rakia nodded.

“He’s going to Brazil tomorrow. He said his client asked for a change of shooting location. I had offered to come along, but he refused.”

“That’s weird,” Lizzy commented, which was immediately responded to by Rakia’s sharp gaze.

“You guys always seem to be together, but come on, maybe you better stay out of work with him. You can stay here if you want.”

Rakia smiled and was grateful for having an understanding friend like Lizzy.

“Your father and mother already know?” Lizzy got up to take the television remote and moved to sit next to Rakia.

“Not yet, but I’ll tell them later; maybe I’ll tell my father first.” Rakia moved their soda tray to her other side so that she could stretch out her legs. Lizzy was busy selecting broadcasts.

“How are your wedding preparations going? Everything okay?” asked Lizzy, changing the topic.

“Yeah, that’s fine; we didn’t invite many people, so there’s no need for a lavish event. I’m going to the bridal tomorrow to pick up my wedding dress.” Rakia got up, moved to the sofa, and lay down.

“At least there are still good things waiting for you in the future; you can find work again after marriage.”

Rakia nodded even though Lizzy didn’t see it.

“Are you sure you don’t want to persuade Ben again to come to Brazil?” Lizzy teases Rakia into trying to get a proper diversion.

“Should I try again?” Rakia sounded unsure.

“Yeah, tell him you need a distraction from this sadness.”

Rising from her lying position, Rakia took her cell phone from her bag and called Ben again. The man still needs to answer the first call. Then Rakia tried to contact him again, but he didn’t answer. Then, Rakia sent a message to her fiancé to get him. But Rakia felt uneasy that Ben didn’t usually act like this; after three years of their togetherness, Ben treated her like a queen; even Lizzy sometimes envied her because Ben seemed to monopolize her. Ben always has time for her, even during his busy schedule.

Rakia returned to lying down, but now she is busy surfing social media. She also tried to log into her fiancée’s I*******m account. Still, she was shocked because she no longer had access to it. She tried to enter the password she knew all along but failed. Rakia moved to Ben’s other social media as well. She doesn’t have access to it. She also switched to her account and checked Ben’s account through her performance, and what happened was that she could not find her fiancé’s account in her friend list. Rakia frowned, she called Ben again, but he didn’t answer.

“Hey Liz, you’re following Ben on I*******m, right?” she asked.

“Yes, why?”

“I can no longer access his account, and strangely, he has disappeared from my friend list,” Rakia admitted while trying to contact Ben via W******p or cellphone. Lizzy went to grab her cell phone, which was lying on the television table. Then, she checked Ben’s account on I*******m.

“I’m still friends with him, but it’s weird; who is this hot woman?”

Lizzy’s question distracted Rakia from her cell phone, and she looked over one of the woman’s shoulders to see what she was asking. Rakia was increasingly confused, and negative thoughts immediately appeared. Several photos of the same woman wearing only a bikini are uploaded on Ben’s account.

“Was the account hacked?” Rakia spat out her suspicions. Lizzy was silent for a while, continuing to examine the photos of the woman.

“Somebody uploaded the photos three days ago. It’s possible that he was hacked, or... you don’t suspect anything about his behavior lately?” Lizzy tilted her head slightly as she turned towards Rakia.

“No, he can’t betray me; we will get married soon.” Suddenly, Rakia experienced a change of emotions. Lizzy chuckled.

“Hey, I’m just asking, don’t panic like that,” said Lizzy. Rakia tried to calm herself down.

“Try calling him and asking about this,” Lizzy suggested then.

“Yes, but not appointed,” Rakia said. Lizzy didn’t say anything else because she was in the film she was watching on television. At the same time, Rakia was still busy with her suspicions and assumptions, making her even more nervous.

The white wedding dress with a simple model but fantastic value perfectly wrapped Rakia’s body. She looks like a fairy tale princess now. She smiled, seeing her reflection in the mirror wearing her wedding dress in the locker room where she ordered the dress.“Liz, take a picture, please; I’ll send Ben,” Rakia asked, to which Lizzy smiled.“It would be better if it were a surprise for her,” said Lizzy, preparing to take a picture of Rakia on the woman’s cell phone. Rakia posed as well as she could with several poses. After finishing, Rajia sent the photos to Ben via WhatsApp. After trying it on, she removed the dress; the bridal staff who had accompanied her packed it neatly. Rakia asks Lizzy to take her to get the dress because Lizzy has a car.“Have you tried calling Ben?” Lizzy asked as they were on their way home.“Yes, this morning I called, but it didn’t take long because he said he was taking a photo shoot.” Rakia stared at the highway, which was quite congested by vehicles

After her fifth call with no answer from her fiancé, Rakia’s frustration reached its maximum. She squeezed her phone like she was going to crush it. She was furious with Ben, who never answered her phone and replied to her messages; she wanted to ask the man to explain the photo she found yesterday on one of the man’s social media. Lizzy opened the door to the room currently occupied by Rakia. Since yesterday, she has asked her poor friend to move into her house and live temporarily until she legally becomes someone else’s wife.“Why? Have you managed to call Ben yet?” asked Lizzy in the doorway, her hand still perched on the hinge. Rakia shook her head in frustration. She brushed her hair in a state she bowed deeply. Lizzy joined her, sitting on the edge of the bed.“Want me to contact him?” Lizzy offered, suddenly making Rakia raise her head and stare at Lizzy while nodding. She was ready to cry but managed to hold it in by biting her lip. Just as Lizzy was about to move to pick u

A spoon tapping gently on the plate’s surface distracted Lizzy from enjoying her breakfast. She turned her gaze to the source of the voice that was right in front of her. Rakia looked glum with a lackluster gesture and just made that noise.“Eat it, Kia,” said Lizzy. Rakia reprimanded, only sighed. A week after the celebration of burning the wedding dress, Rakia entered a confused phase. As a result, it affected all her activities, including her appetite. Lizzy is worried about her best friend’s condition because Rakia has had stomach ulcers since high school.“Later, your ulcer will relapse. Do you want to go to the hospital? It’s not good to eat; it’s not good to sleep?” Lizzy threatens so that Rakia will eat properly. She understands that Rakia’s situation is one of the most challenging things in a woman’s world. When her heart is hurt deep enough, it will directly affect all aspects of her life.“It’s also like being in a hospital; it’s not good to eat, it’s not good to sleep,”

    “How come you just run away?” Lizzy protested when they arrived home from the morning’s bike ride. They parked their bicycles in the garage next to the parked car.“If you don’t run away, the guy invites pleasantries,” said Rakia honestly.“Yes, it’s okay if you don’t like it, just for me, okay?” Lizzy looked at Rakia while raising her eyebrows with a big smile. Rakia stared at the woman with narrowed eyes.“Whatever, I want to take a shower.” Rakia was the first to enter the house.“Hey, where are you going? The keys in me!” shouted Lizzy, who immediately stopped Rakia in front of the main door and waited for the house’s owner. Lizzy came and immediately opened the door.“What are we having for breakfast? Any suggestions?” asked Lizzy as they walked into the house.“How about chicken porridge?” Rakia enthusiastically, and Lizzy chuckled.“Just wasting calories. How come you’re not fat? The others, granola plus dragon fruit juice.”“What? That’s prison food; you don’t have to;

Lizzy helped Rakia fold the clothes still on the bed and then stacked them with Rakia’s other garments in a suitcase lying open near the bed.“You don’t want to come with me to Singapore? Just a week for vacation.” Rakia got out of bed and crouched in front of her suitcase, adjusting the location of her things that didn’t feel right.“I’m busy this month, I have a client website that I have to finish soon. I’ll go there later when you want to get married again.”Rakia frowned as she looked at Lizzy, sitting with her back on the bed.“Excuse me? It’s like I was once married and then divorced,” protested Rakia. Lizzy giggled because Rakia captured her joke.“Are you thinking Is it easy to get married? Look at me, i haved relationship for while and then...just what? Nonsense.” Those were some of the thoughts that Rakia wanted to throw up. Rakia wasn’t comfortable with Dashtan accompanying her at the moment. Still, she could only accept someone’s invitation if it cost her money. As a result, he walked hand in hand by creating a reasonable distance between them. This mall was packed with visitors; people passing by never missed staring at Dashtan.“Actually, where are you going?” asked Rakia, who was finally getting annoyed because Dashtan was attracting too much attention from people.“To my mom’s boutique, want to come?” he offered, to which Rakia responded with a moment of surprise.“Of course not; what would happen if your mother’s employee saw you come with me?! That will give rise to gossip, said Rakia. They stopped in front of a shop that sold jewelry made of diamonds.“I love gossip, usually I don’t escape gossip but lately there’s nothing those people can take from me to gossip about.”Rakia rolled her eyes and folded her arms across her chest.“How about you become the butt of gossip for me today?” Dashtan smil

Dashtan looked at the surprised Rakia with an amused smile. At the same time, Rakia hastily lowered her head to hide her awkwardness and slight embarrassment. Twice, this strange man before her had offered something that sounded ridiculous when a man like Dashtan said it. Rakia took a deep breath to regain her sanity.“Don’t like to offer things that you can’t live up to in the end. Have you ever been dumped?” asked Rakia with a challenging, severe look. Their orders came and stopped their conversation for a moment. The waiter helps them prepare the BBQ stove.“It must be painful,” said Dashtan when they came back together. Rakia swallowed her bitter saliva.“It felt like I wanted to die,” Rakia said honestly. The aroma of grilled meat covered in spice sauce is delicious. Dashtan moved his cooked meat straight into his mouth using chopsticks. He nodded while chewing, “It’s delicious,” he commented. Rakia also followed Dashtan’s way of eating when the meat was cooked; she also made the

Dashtan tightly shook the hand of a man around the same age as his stepfather. A polite smile graced his face as the man smiled while shaking hands.“Thank you for coming this far, Mr Reynaldi. Come on, please sit down,” Dashtan greeted, and then they sat across from each other on a dark blue sofa.“Does not matter. Your dad said if I had to meet you to start the dig, you’d be in charge there.” Mr Reynaldi looked at Dashtan with his modest gaze. Dashtan smiled; the man had been so attached to him since they first met at the museum’s opening in Singapore. They have the same interest in science. What things are buried there? Dashtan started his observation. He wanted to know what was in there; his mind was already guessing its value.“From what our team got, the remains of human civilization as old as the Mayans were buried. Don’t imagine that civilization will be as wide as Atlantis and the Mayans. It’s only a small civilization, but it proves that a civilized tribe once lived on that

Four months later.Rakia was surprised when Dashtan hugged her from behind. Her belly now looked bloated. She had just turned off the stove after the fried rice was finished. Dashtan kissed her earlobe, and it caused a slight sting that thrilled Rakia. “Are you done?” asked Dashtan in a highly sensual tone. “Why? You want to fuck me again?” guessed Rakia, which made her husband chuckle. Rakia rolled her eyes. “We should do other things besides bed activities. Eat, walk, work, the world is big and beautiful and there are many things we can do.” It wasn’t that Rakia didn’t want to, but they had done it repeatedly last night. Dashtan, who had just come from Dubai and left for three days, immediately asked for her nightly allotment. “I’m away for three days, I’m a man, there’s a lot of temptation in Dubai,” Dashtan admitted. Rakia turned her body to face the man. She draped both arms around her husband’s neck. “Where did you go while in Dubai? Did Razak take you to a place wh

Dashtan opened the door to the room he used as a reading room and found Rakia sitting on a comfortable sofa reading a book. The woman's attention was distracted by Dashtan in the doorway, who smiled and greeted her. "Hi, feeling better?" asked Dashtan as he approached Rakia and squatted in front of the woman. Rakia nodded with a gentle smile. "But the doctor still doesn't want me to go to work, are you home yet?" It was Rakia's turn to ask; it wasn't even lunchtime, and Dashtan was already home. "I want to take you somewhere." Dashtan said, which made Rakia frown. She then guessed. "Not fancy gifts again," Rakia said; she didn't really like the way Dashtan gave her gifts. It was always expensive stuff, not that she wasn't happy, but she still had to get used to using things bought with piles of money. Dashtan chuckled. A month had passed after all the problems between them and Dalilah were resolved. Dashtan divorced the woman, and Dalilah had to go to jail for the crime of att

Staring at the footage Dashtan was watching on Rakia’s tablet in his workspace, Dashtan checked all the footage Rakia had managed to get from the surveillance cameras the woman had installed in Dalilah’s room. It was only a matter of waiting for the woman’s arrest warrant from the police so that the police could freely search all her belongings. Dashtan transferred all the footage to a small flash drive, and tomorrow, he will submit the data to the police station as additional evidence. After checking all the data, Dashtan went from his office to his bedroom; he met Dalilah, crossing the living room. “Hi, what’s going on? I heard someone came in and Rakia-““Enough of the pleasantries, as of this moment I am no longer your husband.”The words were so quick but heard in Dalilah’s ears that she could only be surprised with widened eyes for a split second. Her lips seemed to move to say something, but Dalilah was just silent; Dashtan immediately walked away after saying that. Dalilah co

Dashtan arrived home and dashed into the house, which was currently quite crowded due to the arrival of the police and medics. Without caring about his surroundings, he immediately entered and looked for the figure that was the heart of his heart. When he saw Rakia being treated by the medics on the sofa in the living room, he could only stand still with his eyes filled with tears. He slowly approached the couch, distracted by the man’s arrival. “Hi...,” Rakia greeted softly with a hoarse voice.“Sorry, sir, she needs to be taken to the hospital immediately; the bullet is still inside and must be removed immediately to speed up healing.” Dashtan immediately nodded to the medic’s words. He lifted Rakia’s body, carried her to the ambulance, and followed a few minutes later after finishing his business with the police who arrested the perpetrator. Dashtan, with his murderous gaze, looked at the perpetrator, who two police officers now flanked with his hands cuffed behind his back. He re

A week after Rakia regained consciousness, the woman asked to go home because she didn’t feel at home in the hospital. But that didn’t mean she was free from medical treatment. She still had to keep resting and using IVs to support her recovery. The wound she sustained on her shoulder had not completely dried up, leaving her with pain Rakia could not tolerate. As a result, Dashtan hired a doctor who would come every three days to monitor and check on Rakia’s condition—and also asked the gynecologist, whom Rakia consulted and checked herself, to go to the house to check on the woman’s womb. Dashtan became super protective, which bothered Rakia, but she tried to understand. She asked Pedro to do it, but Pedro was a heart specialist with a busy schedule every day, so he couldn’t make it. “Don’t forget to eat and take your medicine; I’ll be home by lunchtime. Call me quickly if anything happens or you need anything.” Dashtan babbled at length, and it made Rakia roll her eyes because her

On a bright and cloudy Monday morning, Dashtan tried to go to the office and finish some work that had been neglected. Whether he wanted to or not, whether he liked it or not, as the CEO of a multinational company, he had a lot of work to do. Dashtan looked at his appearance in the mirror, which was not wearing a tie perfectly. He remembered the figure of Rakia, who always put on his link every morning. But the woman was still on the verge of life and death. He let out a rough breath and decided not to wear a tie that day. He removed it from his neck and threw it on the bed. He went to the wardrobe room to get a slim-fit suit and put it on, after which he left his room. He called his secretary to order breakfast. “Sir, today there will be a visitor from the police who wants to see you.” The secretary told him when he had just arrived and sat in his chair. He had forgotten about it because his mind had been in turmoil for the past few days. “Yes, let me know when they arrive.” Dasht

Dashtan's words were able to increase the panic and fear Dalilah felt. The woman stared at Dashtan with both eyes perfectly rounded. "W-what do you mean? That person must be lying. I don't know who that person is." Dalilah threw up her defense, to which Dashtan responded with a sarcastic smile. He lowered his raised hand, holding the cell phone to his side, and said, "I'm giving you a choice. Confess now, then I'll divorce you and not take the matter to the law, but if you still want to persist with your lies, you'll lose everything and end up in jail." Dalilah stared at Dashtan with a look full of fear. Her brain was busy thinking of defenses she should say to make him believe her. "Ash, I couldn't possibly do something like that. I am pregnant, so the doctor said, "This is your child; we will live happily." Dalilah was still trying to devise a defense that already sounded disgusting to Dashtan's ears. The man turned around and waved his hand behind him for Dalilah to stop saying

Dashtan returned to the hospital after talking to Razak. Doctor Pedro met him just as he arrived at the door of the ICU; he had just come out of the room to check on Rakia. “Do you want to look after her tonight?” Doctor Pedro looked at his son-in-law with a sympathetic gaze. The look on Dashtan’s face couldn’t hide the anxiety that was engulfing him. Dashtan nodded. “You can sleep in my room, because the ICU doesn’t allow anyone in there except the patient.” Doctor Pedro informed, and once again, Dashtan nodded. “Come on, let’s go to the cafeteria for coffee,” Doctor Pedro invited, which Dashtan agreed to. He needed a conversation partner to distract him from worrying about Rakia’s condition. “I told Adeline about Rakia, she’ll be here tomorrow morning to see her. I know it’s worrying but that woman has been through a lot as a journalist. Rakia is a strong woman.” Pedro smiled as his mind recalled Rakia’s vigorous and unyielding figure.
