Rose
I woke up the day before my eighteenth birthday with the same familiar sweaty skin stuck to leather feeling. “Why do I even own a bed?” I muttered to myself as I pried my skin from the leather-like I did most mornings.
I stretched before placing one of my well-loved books about the moon goddess back on the bookshelf. The songs of the cicadas crept into the room, letting me know that today was going to be hot. I opened my bedroom window further, desperately hoping a breeze would circulate the dead air. Nothing....nothing at all to ease the stifling atmosphere. I groaned before making my way to my dresser.
“Let’s go for a run.” Delilah was raring to go this morning. Tomorrow held the potential of our mate, and she was overflowing with energy.
“Do we have to? Today would be the perfect day to hide away from everyone and read by the creek.” I groaned at the peppy wolf echoing in my ears.
“Compromise? Hike to the creek, go for a run, and then you can hide from the world?” Delilah always seemed to get her way. I did not have the heart to shut her down completely, and she knew it.
“Fiiiine,” I sighed as I perused my books. I lightly thumbed their spines before picking a couple of books to take with me. I tossed the books in my well-loved khaki-colored canvas backpack along with a throw blanket. I slipped off the wife beater I slept in and kicked off my linen sleep shorts.
There was no point in even showering when you know you are going out to grimey in the sweltering summer heat. I threw on a pair of black biker shorts and a black sports bra. Quickly I shoved on socks before I sunk my feet into the familiar embrace of my old and very well-loved pair of hiking boots.
I stepped into the bathroom groaned at the mirror. Hastily I threw my hair in a messy ponytail, and attempting to pin up some of the baby hairs that framed my face was the most effort I was willing to put forth. I did a once over in the mirror. Before traipsing out of my room with my backpack slung over my shoulder.
“Hurry up! Let’s go! Let’s go!” Delilah was demanding as I scampered down the stairs. I made one last stop in the kitchen to fill my canteen and grab some snacks to dump everything into my backpack. I dashed out the front door only to be suffocated by the humidity.
“Where are you off to, Rosebud?” My mom was crouching down in the shade, pulling weeds out from one of her flower beds.
“Hiking, running, and reading.” I kissed the top of her head.
“No Harriet or Heather?”
“Not this time. I want to embrace my inner loner today.”
“Okay, well, be careful. People will start showing up with the Carnival tomorrow.”
“I know, Momma.” With that, I was off. I slipped out the front gate breathing in the scent of wild avens and bluebells. I briskly made my way down the street towards the forest.
“Rose!” a voice called out to me. I knew exactly who that was.
“So close…” I muttered to myself as I turned towards the voice. “Oh hey, Matt. What’s up?” I started to walk backward, praying that maybe he would get the idea that I didn’t want to talk.
“Have you seen Harriet?” Matt sheepishly grinned. Matt was tall with thick curly dark molasses-colored hair pushed on top of his head by a sweatband. He was strong but not really muscular. He had dull gray eyes that only held any real emotion when he had his tongue shoved down my friend’s throat.
“She and Heather are helping their mom today.” I shrugged.
“Damn. Wanna hang out then?” He teased and winked at me.
“Uh, nope! Bye!” I took off in a sprint into the woods, trying to slip away.
“Hey, you might like it!” He called after me.
I glanced one last time over my shoulder as I started my trek. Thankfully Matt didn’t follow me. I touched the bark of trees like I was being welcomed home by my loved ones. Slipping through the trees was second nature; I could make this hike with my eyes closed. After about twenty minutes of blissful silence, I made my way to the creek. I glanced around before stripping my clothes off and tucking them in my bag.
“Ready?” I softly muttered to Delilah.
“Always,” Delilah giddily smirked. Slowly my hands thicken and expand into paws. The sounds of breaking bones echoed throughout the forest. Cream fur started to envelop my body as I thudded onto the forest floor. Delilah was a beautiful wolf spirit. She had cream fur with light honey brown markings contouring her nose, winging her eyes, and hugging the edges of her ears.
At last, Delilah took over completely and was finally released to be free. Her paws thundered through the woods as she finally got to feel the wind in her fur. She ran through the forest, splashed through the creek, and let her soul soar. I truly felt blessed to have Delilah as my wolf spirit. I had occasionally heard stories about people being at odds with their wolves. That their personalities chafed against each other. I knew the Goddess had blessed me.
Delilah was an old soul, but she was also a free spirit. The forest called to her, and I tried my best to let her answer as much as I could. The forest was my second home. This is where Delilah and I could really fulfill both of our needs. Her run and my reclusion. I loved my two best friends, but sometimes I just need to escape the little village.
Once she finally got the run that her heart desired, she relinquished control, and I started to pad back to the creek. I shifted back into my human form before I slipped on my clothes. I spread out the blanket under a lush oak tree by the stream. I plopped down on the blanket with one of my books and tried to escape the heat by disappearing into my book. Each word I read was coaxing me into a world with far-off places, daring sword fights, changing your fate, unconditional love, and finding your voice. I was unaware of my eyelids drooping, and slowly sleep engulfed my body.

I was walking through an unknown foggy forest; I had no idea where I was. Nothing was even vaguely familiar. I wanted to turn around and try to go back where I came from, but then I spotted a field of wildflowers. Now those flowers seemed familiar; they seemed to almost call to me.
My feet had a mind of their own as they led me to wander through the flowers. I nonchalantly dragged my hands over the flowers. It was a beautiful and serene sight. I deeply inhaled the sweet scent of the flower and gave a slight shudder of bliss. I closed my eyes and just absorbed the moment wanting to remember it.
Suddenly the sounds of paws hitting the forest floor overwhelmed me. Then in a flash, the forest was ignited with flames. Everything glowed vibrant oranges and reds as heavy smoke smothered me from above. I threw myself to the ground, desperate for any trace of clean air. As I attempted to crawl out of the flowers, new sounds began to harmonize; screams, howls, and cries for help terrorized me.
I clawed at the ground; dirt and soot caked underneath my nails. I was desperate to escape the menacing choir. Fire licked my skin, and I screamed for help. Sobs escaped lips as flaming branches fell on me from above. The smell of burning flesh was the only thing that consumed me as everything went dark.

“...”
“...”
“...” Shaking and a muffled voice tried to coax me to open my eyes. I squinted my eyes, silently pleading with myself to give in to the unknown person. They lightly patted my cheek and rubbed my forearm, attempting to wake me up completely.
“Rose! Hey, come wake up!” The voice was so familiar, but my head still felt like I was in the smoke. My mind scrambled, trying to connect the voice to anyone I knew. I felt my body being lifted from my blanket, cradled in two strong arms.
“Goddess, Rose! Come on, open your eyes!” I knew their scent, but in my fogged brain, I couldn’t put my finger on who it was. Without any warning, I was dunked in the creek, and my whole body reacted. I gasped loudly, and my eyes finally peeled open. Two arms pulled me up into an embrace. “Oh, thank Goddess! You scared the shit out of me.” I rubbed my eyes and took a deep breath in relief. It was Matt.
“Oh, hey? What’s up?” I stuttered as I wiped the water from my face. I slightly pulled away before I realized Matt was completely naked in the creek with me. His breathing was heavy, and his face was pale. His wary eyes scoured over me, trying to decide whether to kill or hug me.
“What’s up?!?!” Matt’s low growl made me slightly jump as he grabbed my forearms and shook me. “I’m out running in the forest to blow off some steam, and I hear screaming. I take off running, thinking that one of my pack mates is being brutally attacked. The next thing I know, I found you writhing and crying on the ground. I tried to wake you, but nothing was working. After I finally get desperate enough to jump into the creek with you. You finally snap out of whatever nightmare you were having and have the nerve to casually ask me what’s up?”
I stared at Matt. He was clearly shaken up, and I knew I definitely was. He helplessly tried to pull me out of the lucid nightmare that had taken over me. I lowered my eyes, not daring to make eye contact at the moment. I submissively put my forehead to his heaving chest and waited for his breathing to even out. I usually didn’t submit to Matt since he is my best friend’s boy toy, but I gave him it this one time, hoping he would not bring it up later.
“Honestly, I don’t know what was going on, Matt. One minute I was reading and then I fell asleep. I had a dream; I was in a forest, and at first, it was peaceful, but then everything changed. There was fire and screaming surrounding me. I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t escape….” I trailed off and shook my head side to side. “Thanks for waking me up.” I looked him in the eye as I spoke those last words.
I decided to keep the fact I knew he was trying to wake me up, and I couldn’t wake up fully to myself. I was kind of freaked out by that, and I did not need anyone else on that roller coaster with me. Plus, he had a big mouth, and the whole pack would know by the end of the day. He pulled me back into his arms and hugged me.
“Shit.” He muttered to himself as he stroked my wet hair with one hand and continued to hug me with the other arm. After a minute or two I. pulled away and smiled at him. It was time to throw him off, so hopefully, he would not blab about my possible psychotic episode to my friends or worse...my parents...or even worse the Alpha.
“Thanks, Matt. You were a lifesaver. As a thank you, I won’t tell Harriet you hugged on me while you were naked…with a boner.” I playful tease him as his cheeks turned as red as the flames in my nightmare.
He looked down at his hard-on and bit his lip as he thought. A devilish grin spread across his face, and he grabbed my waist. He brushed his length against me and licked my face. I pretended to vomit in the creek in retaliation.
“Just for that,” Matt threw me into the deeper part of the creek. I gasped for air and surfaced. “Seems like you should have taken me up on that offer earlier to hang out. You would not have had that weird nightmare, and we could both be naked together on the ground.” I groaned at him before I submerged myself under the water.
Rose After the crazy dream, I decided to hang out with Matt until the sun started to edge behind the trees. He walked me home and only playfully tried to hit on me about ten times. That was an early birthday miracle in itself. Nothing of interest happened the rest of the day. As always, I reported back to Harriet about her boy toy before I read myself into a deep, peaceful slumber. Not a single dream of smoke or burning flesh, which I never knew was such a blessing until then. The sun crept through the window on the morning of my eighteenth birthday. It danced across my eyelids, encouraging me to greet the day. As I stretched, I accidentally fell out of my cozy chair and hit the floor with a grunt. I rubbed my butt as I sulked.
RoseAfter the mind link ended, all the magical sounds of the carnival ceased to exist. Matthew grabbed Harriet’s face pulling her lips against his and stole a passionate kiss. Heather and I turned away to give them a moment. We only turned back when we heard him say four words.“I love you, Harriet.” He choked out as a tear ran down his cheek. He shredded his clothes as he shifted into his large molasses wolf with a white underbelly. He bolted towards the southern border visibly forcing himself to look to the border as Harriet crumbled to her knees.“You asshole! That’s not fair! That wasn’t part of the agreement !” She screamed after his wolf as the tears streamed down her cheeks. “I love you, too.” Harriet whimpered into her hands. Heather leaned down and hugged her sister from behind. To other packs, this probably would be no big deal. We are just a small pack in the middle of the mountains. We aren't a fighter rich pack, we are peaceful. What did we
Matt After the mind link ended, an eerie silence engulfed the carnival grounds before people started to panic. Families took off running away from the Southern border, but the only person I could focus on was Harriet. I saw the horror beginning to take hold of her. I had to do something to distract her. I grabbed Harriet’s face, pulling her lips against mine as I stole a passionate kiss. I needed her to feel anything but fear. Harriet and Heather didn’t have a dad anymore because of the last attack on our village. Fifteen years ago, there were the hunters. Unfortunately, he didn’t make it out alive. ***Come on, Matthew. It’s an infestation of rogues. Leave your girlf
RoseI whipped my head around after Harriet whispered his name. His back was macerated, claw marks exposed raw skin. Thin trails of blood trickled down his body. I just saw this body yesterday...the current sight made me recoil and gulp. His head started to twitch like he was searching for someone. His body slightly turned; only then is when we realized he was holding someone in his arms.“Heather,” Harriet gasped, and she clambered to her feet. Matt whipped his head once he saw her voice. Matt immediately ushered Heather to us. “Is she okay?” Harriet croaked, and she reached her hands up to her baby sister’s cheek.“Just knocked out. I found Heather unconscious near the flower and herb fields. There were some burning branches on top of her. I think she will be fine. She has some burns, but I think the smoke got to her. It was the worst area I had been in.” Matt kneeled and gently laid her on the ground as Harriet brushed Heather’s hair out of her face.“
Rose It was well past midnight as we continued to scour the village and forests for survivors. Our Alpha was dead, our Luna was dead, our Beta was dead, our warriors were dead, mothers were dead, fathers were dead, children were dead. Our pack was a husk of what it used to be. Just thinking of it made me want to sink into myself, shutting out the world. I was lucky. My friends and my parents were still alive. I had never been so glad my siblings had moved onto larger packs, anywhere but here. When they found my dad, he had already started treating people. Most of the pack that was injured had burns, and luckily they were healing pretty quickly on their own. My arm was almost completely healed, most likely earning my first battle scar. An a
MattI placed the call into the council around three in the morning. Silver Crescent had been attacked. I kept repeating it to myself. Trying to get it to sink in but desperately hoping it’s just a sick joke. There was no one else to do it. After the disastrous events of the night, everyone was a shell of their previous self. Heck, so was I. My dad died in the battle. He died protecting the people he loved, the pack he cherished. I’m proud to be his son, and I know he would have been proud of me for taking out the scum who killed Alpha Dane. I wish I could have killed them all. To take their lives, they took my only family member away from me. I was alone. After midnight some of the men and I had taken care of the bodies of the rogues. We loaded trucks and dumped them outside our territory off the side of the mountain into a rocky ravine. They did not deserve any more than that. Anyone who was injured was with Rose’s dad. Heather had woken up, but Harriet i
Unknown Alpha Alastor walked out of my office and closed the doors. I leaned back in my chair with my eyes closed. When was the last time a pack was hit this hard? When werewolves were not in a pack and let their wolves take over for too long, they became feral. Unfortunately, in the mountains, there were more feral rogues than regular rogues. The gift and curses of nature. The danger hiding behind the beauty. Why the fire, though? I would get to the bottom of this. One way or another. Standing up from my desk, I made my way out of my office and down the long corridor. I passed a few of the early riser members of my pack, only giving nods as the only form of acknowledgment. The quicker I left, the faster I could get there. Time was of the essence. I padded down the steps of my packhouse.“The cars are ready to go, Alpha.” Alastor walked up to me. “We are taking twenty warriors with us. We will be spre
RoseOne of the surviving elders, with the assistance of Matt, performed the ceremony. It was short, but it echoed in all of our hearts. We had a graveyard, but it was not large enough to accommodate everyone we lost. The new cemetery was now where one of our flower and herb gardens used to be. It was the only place that had enough space and was not on top of the village. One by one, we walked by, each one saying goodbye and thanking them for their contribution to our pack. My dad, Matt, Harriet, a few warriors, and a couple of regular pack members covered each body with my dirt as the last pack members said goodbye to them. My mom trailed behind, placing wildflowers on each of the graves. Heather stood beside me with her finger intertwined with mine while we watched the depressing repetition. She squeezed my hand and pulled me to walk away. I let her lead me. I knew she wanted to get away from there. After all, she could have died and then been buried in that field i
RoseOne moment I was floating in my bathtub daydreaming about Orion, and then the next thing I knew, I was lying on a bed of damp earth, twigs, and fallen leaves on the forest floor. The sweet aroma of honeysuckle and moss tickled my nose.
RosePru sat across from me at the breakfast nook table. She gently shook her leg as she wrapped her fingernails on the table. We had been sitting like this for an hour. I was scared her leg was going to fall off.“What time is it?” Pru broke the silence.“Only a quarter past five.” I sighed. “You are going to be fine.”Pru wasn’t precisely scared to join the pack, but she was a ball of nerves. She was so calm that night with the Fallen Moon rogues. I found her fascinating; she was almost the complete opposite of Harriet.“I know, I know.” Pru offered a halfhearted smile. Matt was in a meeting with Orion, Alastor, and Damian. Orion had told me I could join in, but my heart told me to keep Pru company.“I think you are overthinking it.” I reached across the table and placed my hand on top of hers. I hope I was able to offer her some shred of comfort.“I know.” I heard that response way too many times in the past hour. She was just focu
RoseBeams of late morning sun danced across the hardwood floors. I snuggled deep into Orion's chest as if he could make the morning go away.Last night after the 'bonfire,' Orion had carried me on his back to the packhouse. I never thought I would get used to being carried around on someone's back so much. Now it was second nature.I pulled the duvet up over my shoulder, trying to fight off the slight chill in our room. I guess it was time to either start wearing more clothes to bed or either crank up the heat more."I suggest the heat. I would hate for Orion to have to wear more clothes. I prefer him naked myself." A voice echoed in my head. She was there; Delilah was back. I felt my breath catch in my throat."You are back!" I squealed at my wolf."I am.""I missed you." I really had. I was lonely without her. Everyone else had been trying to prevent it, but it couldn't be helped. I saw through the movie afternoon with my girls. No
RoseAfter a couple of hours of blanket forts and cuddles, a knock on the door sounded, reminded us that there was a world outside of this room. I peaked over the top of the couch to see Orion and Alastor lingering in the doorway.“Okay, ladies, you have stolen my mate for long enough. It’s time to get ready to go.” Orion walked over and gently poked my nose. I stuck my tongue out at Orion as I crawled out from under my blanket.“We did not even have her that long!” Harriet whined, and she dramatically clutched my blanket to her chest.“You are going to see her again in ten minutes,” Alastor mumbled as he leaned up against the back of the couch and ruffled Harriet’s curls.I gently stretched my arms up and out as I stood up. My muscles ached, and I silently prayed that Delilah came back soon. I hadn’t felt this bad since I had the premonition when I was Pru ran in the woods.I let my fingers intertwine with Or
Rose“Anyways, we have gathered to discuss Alaric and Pru.” Orion cleared his throat.“What’s there to discuss?” I almost jumped to my feet; my heart frantically hammered in my chest. I couldn’t live with myself if they were punished or turned away from our pack. I turned to look at Alaric, Pru, and Matt. Pru and Matt had their fingers interlocked. Alaric had his head tilted to the side; his curiosity had been tantalized. I could see the cogs turning behind those gray eyes. Why were they so calm?“Luna,” Alastor spoke up. I whipped my head to face him. The sudden movement made my neck muscles scream in pain. I winced but tried my best to hold my composure.“Pru saved me. Pru saved Matt. It’s not like Pru asked to be there. They kidnapped her, too! She was taken; they stole her life and her grimoire. Alaric undermined his Uncle, his Father, and all those rogues whenever he could! He put his neck on the line for us when he didn’t have to. If it wasn’t for P
RoseOrion and I didn’t get back to Black Moon until past sunrise. Orion wanted to stay and help dispose of the bodies, but Alastor and Harriet wouldn’t have it. They took care of the bodies and the fire, erasing the presence of the war the best they could. I rode on Orion’s back during the journey home. Clutching Pru’s jacket for warmth and some sense of modesty. I didn’t really want to have a Lady Godiva moment after the night I had.I honestly didn’t remember much of the trip back home. Once I was on Orion’s back, I knew I was safe and didn’t have to worry about anything. I do remember my parents smothering me, though. My father checked me over at least twice, and my mom almost threw me into the bathroom. After they were satisfied I was clean and not going to die, they went home. I knew that they would be back as soon as they had a catnap.Orion had asked me if I wanted to stay in the guest room, but it was time to go back to our room. Kroll couldn’t touch us
Rose Greta’s hands wrapped around my neck, trying to squeeze the life out of me. If she was trying to scare me, it wouldn’t work because I had already seen the darkness that waited to consume anyone it could. Compared to that, she was nothing. Her fingers dug into the flesh of my neck, a small stream of blood escaping. Greta was desperate; air bubbles escaped from her mouth.I elongated my claws and slashed through her jacket to her forearm. Greta let go of me and clutched her arm in pain. I grabbed her hair in my hand and violently yanked it.In the water, I had the advantage. Greta was dressed for the Autumn weather; her boots and jacket would do nothing but weigh her down in the water. The best part, though, was that she couldn’t use her fire.I may have been naked, but I would rather be exposed to the cold water than to have anything on me slowing me down.Greta threw a punch at me, causing me to lose my
Orion“Oh, hello, little puppy, have you seen the pathetic Alpha of Black Moon? I was thinking his head would be a delightful souvenir of this battle.” Kroll’s voice rang through the air as clear as a bell. Every word was peppered with cruel satisfaction.I shifted back to my human form and stood tall in front of the disgusting excuse of a wolf. “Is that what my mate was? Just a souvenir?”“Oh, of course not. Your little flower? That’s what you call her, right?” Kroll’s lips curled up into a disgusting grin. “Well, she is the crown jewel in my little collection.”I let out an earth-shaking growl. My mate was a Luna, not a cheap tchotchke for a lunatic’s shelf.“Down, boy,” Kroll smirked; he knew he struck a nerve. “Is that how you treat your superiors?”“The only thing about you that is superior is that distorted God complex of yours.” I casually ran my fingers through my hair. “It’s a shame you are such a sociopath.”“I am not a soci
RoseWith every stride my paws made, I could feel the demonic warmth of Greta's rage encroaching on me."You can't run forever, little girl!" Greta cackled from behind me. A crack of her whip cut through the woods coming after me. Just a little bit further. I skidded out of the woods onto the road I had been on in a different time. Its course seemed unchanged, thank Goddess. The path from my premonition was the same except for a layer of asphalt.I ran down the road as fast as I could. The asphalt gnawing on the pads of my paws. If I wasn't in a life or death situation, I would probably love to wander through the area.My back left paw was ripped out from under me as Greta's fire scorched my fur. My jaw crashed into the street. The taste of metallic blood rushed into my mouth; I had bitten my tongue on impact. I jerked my leg away from Greta's fire, scrambling to get away."Just give up. You will never win against me." Greta taunted me. Her
