*** Doesn’t she look pretty this morning.*** I mind linked Alaric as I scooted over in the cracked pleather booth to make room for Heather to sit by me.
Heather had her platinum blonde hair pulled back in a low ponytail and was wearing a simple blue sundress with a chunky cream sweater thrown on top of it.
Heather slipped into the booth beside me and immediately picked up the menu. We all knew the menu by heart, but she still took the time to look it over.
Alaric’s eyes bugged out of his skull at me. During Alaric’s time in Black Moon, he became almost like a little brother to me. I had been the baby in my family, and all three of my siblings seemed pretty apathetic when it came to me. They teased me, but that was the extent of their interest in me. Alaric appeared to fill a hole I didn’t know I had in my life.
“Why are you two up and functioning so early?” Heather yawned and nuzzled her head into my shoulder. I lifted my hand up and cradled her head. Part of me wanted to sneak a peek at Alaric to see if he was jealous or not, but instead, I closed my eyes and relished in the affection.
Only when Heather lifted her head back up did I even attempt to respond to her.
“Orion is training with the higher-ups early this morning, so I thought I would get some cleaning done at the library. However, someone broke in before I even got there.” I drummed my fingers on the table and grinned at Alaric.
“Alaric! You have to stop breaking into places!” Heather dropped her menu to the table with a look of exasperation plastered in every pore on her face.
A couple of people in the diner looked at our table. No one really paid any attention after realizing Alaric was with us. It was expected for there to be a little bit of extra noise wherever he went. The pack accepted this and never held it against him. Everyone in the diner went back to their breakfasts and discussions.
“Hey, who said it was me?” Alaric threw both his hands up in the air like he was pleading his innocence. What innocence? Everyone knew who it was. He was probably one of the only people who would get away with it and not be punished by the Alpha.
I leaned back in the booth with my hands tucked behind my head to enjoy the show. A few years ago, I would have never purposely sent Heather into a tizzy. I tried not to do it too often because she might hate me forever.
Still, there was something about watching her with Alaric. Something in my heart felt warm almost. It was a weird sensation that I had refrained from telling anyone about, especially Heather. She would be less than thrilled to hear me admit that.
“Who else would it be?” Heather threw her hands up, exasperated in the air, the poor girl she was playing into his hand. This was their dance; they did it almost every time they spent any time together.
“I find that incredibly offensive.” Alaric let his hands hit the table, causing the silverware to noisily clang.
“I find you incredibly frustrating.”
“I find you incredibly sexy.” Alaric gave Heather a playful wink. The fake vomiting that was her signature action in those last weeks in Silver Cresent made an appearance. The retching brought an odd reminiscing smile to my lips.
“Luna, why do you put up with him?” Her eyes were usually a beautiful icy blue now looked with icicles ready to impale me.
“You don’t think he is charming?” I nudged her with my shoulder as I teased her.
“No, I don’t! He is immature and purposely provokes me!” She nailed Alaric and not in the way he would like her to.
“I am an angel.” Alaric stuck his tongue out at Heather before putting his hands together like he was praying while turning his eyes to the ceiling.
“No, you really aren’t!” I could almost feel the heat radiating off of Heather. I was about to try and break them up when a welcome distraction appeared.
“Sorry to interrupt the fun, but do you know what ya’ll want? If you need another minute or two, I can come back later.” Marie walked up with her order pad in hand and reaching for the yellow pencil tucked behind her ear.
“No, no, Marie. Perfect timing. Absolutely impeccable. Can I get an orange juice and your egg white omelet with bacon and fruit?” Heather jumped at the interruption like a dog for a treat. Anything to drop the topic. Alaric dreamily stared at her with his teeth resting on his bottom lip. I didn’t even want to know what he was thinking.
***You are drooling.*** I teased Alaric through a mind link. I picked up my napkin from the table and dabbed the corners of my mouth just to taunt him.
***How could I not? Look at her!*** Alaric mused back. I watched his eyes trail the curves of her lips and follow her hand as she tucked back a stray strand of hair.
***You are driving her crazy already.***
***Heather likes it. She hasn’t even threatened to leave yet.*** I couldn’t disagree because I had the same thought from time to time. I would never admit that to Heather, though. She might disown me completely, and then I would lose a sparring partner.
“What about you, Luna? What can I getcha?” Marie turned to me with her pencil perched in her hand. I took a moment to appreciate her perfectly manicured red nails. Marie was something else; she always looked like she was freshly made up. I wish I had to time and patience to do that. I never embraced the feminine side like others, but it didn’t mean I couldn’t appreciate it in others.
“Can I get a coffee and some french toast?” I slid my menu forward towards Marie with a smile. Marie’s fingernails clicked against the tabletop, and she scooped up the menus.
“Of course. Okay, your food will be up shortly.” Marie smiled and ripped the paper she had written on out of the pad.
“Hey, what about me?” Alaric whined after Marie.
“A stack of banana and walnut pancakes with a side of sausage and a coffee, which you do not need. Everyone in the pack thinks you need to lay off the caffeine, kid. Anyone who has met you thinks you need to lay off the caffeine.”
“Oh, Marie, are you after my heart?” Alaric placed his elbows on the table and leaned his cheeks on top of his fists.
“Alaric, you order the same thing every time you grace this diner with your presence for breakfast, you, Buffon.”
“She is after my heart!”
“I’ll be back with your orders soon,” Marie said as she walked away, waving our order above her head.
“I like her.” Alaric settled back in his seat with a look of triumph smeared across his face.
“She called you a Buffon.” Heather groaned as she pinched the bridge of her nose.
“So? You call me insufferable? I know you are just trying to hold off on your desire for me until we are mates.” Just like that, he was back into it.
“Please, stop it.” The color in Heather’s face paled as her frustration grew.
“What do you want to do for your eighteenth birthday? It is next week, after all. You want me to tell Iris to throw you a party?” I tried to give Heather a break by changing the topic.
“Definitely not. I don’t want to do anything.” Heather shook her head defensively. She leaned her elbow on the table and sighed.
“Come on, Heather. You have to do something.” I gently prodded as I leaned over to brush my shoulder against hers.
“Yeah, we have to do something dramatic so everyone can see when we find out we are mates.” Alaric flashed Heather a wicked grin. His comment and grin weren’t helping. Dramatic wasn’t really Heather’s thing...Harriet, now that was a different story.
“No, no, and no. Not happening.” Heather shook her head side to side. A slight rosy tint rushed to her cheeks. I definitely noticed, but I was sure Alaric wasn’t perceptive enough to catch it.
“Why do you deny the possibility? When it happens, I hope you are nicer to me...Nah, actually, I like the challenge. It will make it even sweeter when your heart and soul beg for me.” Alaric was pressing his luck today. Heather might actually kill him. He would be the one begging for her to remove her heel from his windpipe.
“Don’t worry, Heather, we can do something chill. No carnivals or forest fires. Promise.” I tried to offer in a joking tone, but that didn’t appease her stance either. I was willing to throw my eighteenth birthday in as a punchline. Orion would not be happy if he heard me do that, but he wasn’t here. The poor guy still would occasionally bring up the “if only’s.”
The wheels were turning in her mind, trying to find a way out of this discussion. She didn’t want to be teased or talk about her eighteenth birthday anymore. As one of her best friends, I knew it was time to switch gears. Whatever she said next, I would go along with and do my best to keep the conversation away from Alaric steering it.
“So Luna, are you have a meeting with Pru and Brigid later today?” Heather turned away from Alaric and looked only at me.
Marie set down our drinks, and I mouthed a “thank you” as she slipped away.
“Smooth...yeah, I do. Seeing if our lovely pack witches have found any new leads. Anything would be helpful.” I stared down into my mug of coffee. Just like this cup of coffee, all of our leads had gone dark. I sighed as I ripped open a packet of creamer and dumped it into my mug. I watched the cooler slightly lighten, and for a brief moment, I was jealous of a cup of coffee. I wanted something, anything, to shed light on Mister Clay’s trail.
“They will. Mister Clay couldn’t have just disappeared.” Alaric picked up a spoon off of the table and began to try and balance it on his nose. He couldn’t stop being a clown, but he did at least seem to catch on that it was time to give Heather a break.
“I know you said you didn’t really know much about him, but you will tell me if you think of anything, right?” I knew Alaric had given us all the information he could, but maybe somewhere, there was something deep down that would be helpful. I would take any small grain he could help with. After all, he was the only actual link to the rogues that we had anymore.
“Of course. Cross my heart and hope to die stick a needle in my eye.” Alaric stuck his right hand up in the air like he was taking a pledge or something.
“Breakfast time! Eat up, lovely ladies...and Buffon.” Marie slid our meals in front of Heather and me first but toyed with Alaric. She slid his plate in front of him back and forth like she was playing with an energetic kitten. Marie only stopped when Alaric managed to grab his plate.
“I hope you get some answers, Rose. We all need some answers soon.” Heather said before she stuck a piece of a strawberry in her mouth.
I knew I wanted answers about Mister Clay and even what my second power was. I am sure other people wanted those answers, too. However, I knew she was craving different answers from her tone. What answers did Heather want? Was it her mate or maybe something else?
RoseAfter my breakfast with Alaric and Heather, I left them arguing in front of the diner. Alaric would annoy her, and eventually, she would pull herself away from his trap. Whenever she did, Alaric was kind enough to look after my little library until I was done with my meeting with my favorite witches.A gentle breeze drifted through the streets of the pack. Bleeding hearts, blackeyed Susans, dogwood, and bluebells harmonized with various other wildflowers.Spring had always been one of my favorite seasons. My mother's garden had come alive and was the most beautiful during that time of year.Things were a little different now. My mom had a garden at her new home, but it wasn't the s
RoseThe evening air was cool and damp from a spring shower earlier in the afternoon. The sun was dipping low behind the trees offering its last beams of peach, purple, and pink light.I slung my bag over my shoulder as I locked up my library for the night and gently tugged on the door handle for good measure. It's not like anyone besides Alaric would bother breaking into it. Not unless they wanted to read under the moonlight and sneak my chocolate-covered coffee beans.Sneaking my treat would be a crime but not one I could punish anyone for doing. The only one who got a sick joy from stealing my food was Harriet, and I rarely saw her in my library."Good evening, Luna." A freshly mated couple nodded as they walked arm in arm past me on the sidewalk."Have a good evening." I smiled.I let my eyes linger after them as they wandered past the small shopping area. I remembered the excitement and rush of finding your mate, finding that missing pi
Rose"The rules are simple; the last person standing at the end with the most flags is the winner." Damian plopped a canvas bag down on the ground with a thud. "You can spar. You can steal multiple flags from your opponents. You cannot ask for outside assistance. You cannot knock out your opponents. You can't hide flags. You cannot shift. You are to stay in the forest, do not bring your game into town. At the end of two hours, the game is over.""Whose idea was this?" Iris groaned as she snatched a purple flag from her brother's hand. Iris tied her flag around her wrist and pulled off her bob-length bubblegum wig. She sighed exasperatedly as she gently placed her wig in her backpack. Her bald head gleamed in the afternoon sun. After I shaved her head, she decided
Rose"Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday, dear Heather. Happy birthday to you." I whispered in Heather's ear as I lay beside her in her bed. I slowly brushed the hair out of her face.Heather swatted at my hand as she rolled away from me. She was still asleep and seemed to have no desire or want to wake up."How long do you think she is going to sleep?" I groaned as I rolled off the bed.Harriet sat on the floor, bouncing a ball off of the wall. "I told you she would do this.""You said she would hide out in the house all day. You didn't say that she would sleep all day." I plopped down on the floor beside Harriet and snatched her ball."Close enough," Harriet muttered as she threw her head back. "We could have slept in our own beds at this rate.""Oh, come on. We had a sleepover for your 18th birthday." I elbowed her in the ribs."I didn't sleep until noon, though.""You know I can hear you two
AlaricI knew the first moment that I saw her that I was drawn to her. At the time, she was just a wolf trying to stop me. Ironically trying to stop me from saving her sister's ex-boyfriend.Even then, I wanted to talk to her, wanted to get under her skin. I craved to break down her walls and become close to her, no matter how difficult it may be.In the weeks leading up to her birthday, I constantly provoked her. I made sure she knew I wanted her in my own unique way. I am sure I looked more like a fool than I do on a regular basis.I flirted, teased, and followed her. I felt like a love-sick puppy chasing after someone who didn't want them.
Rose"Stop it." Orion's arms slipped around my waist from behind as his beard nuzzled into the base of my neck, tickling my skin."I'm not doing anything." I slightly whined as I looked out the window, following the trail of street lamps towards the heart of town."Yes, you are." Orion's words were like silk gliding down my skin, making me melt like butter in his arms. "You are staring down the street, waiting for Heather or Alaric to come and talk to you. No one is going to come and talk to you this late, flower.""Meh, maybe I am, maybe I'm not." Of course, he was right. He knew me so well. Most of the time, I loved it but not right now. Right now, I just wanted to be nosy. Could anyone really blame me for it?"Give them some time. They'll come around.""Yeah, I know. I'm just used to both of them telling me everything, and it's like they have kicked everyone out of their little bubble.""You know when you find your mate, and there
Rose"So she kicked you out?" Harriet loudly slurped her tea as she leaned over the counter of the bar. I rolled my eyes at her as I continued to slice up the pineapple in front of me.It had been a few days since I visited the ethereal realm. It felt like an eternity. Each day seemed to go by slower and slower. I had only told Orion about Selene sending me away; that was until this morning when a mop of curly hair appeared."Pretty much." I sighed as I tossed the spiky crown into the bucket I used to deliver my mom fruit and vegetable remains for her compost bin."Dang, you must have pissed her off good, Rosie Posie." Harriet obnoxiously snorted before looking down into her cup. Maybe Harriet wasn't the best choice for a sounding board about what happened."Honestly, I doubt there is any reason to worry about it. Maybe mating a blessed wolf is something spiritual or a huge deal for her?" Harriet shrugged her shoulders."Maybe...it was odd t
Rose Days turned into weeks, we still had no new information on Mister Clay, and I still hadn't been brave enough to go back to the ethereal realm. I wanted answers, of course, but I always chickened out anytime I had decided to see Selene. Who was this new blessed wolf? Were there others? A couple of times, I thought about trying to trigger a premonition about this new blessed wolf. I knew it wouldn't work, not unless our paths were weaved together in some fashion. Since the demise of the Fallen Moon rogues, that was one thing I had figured out. All of my premonitions around that time were tied to me in some way. The fire, Pru getting kidnapped, Leto getting marked by Hades, going inside the map to see the church camp, and even Iris
Rose"It was like watching a bad car crash; you couldn't look away, but instead of a gory blood bath, nothing happened. Not even a spark or unusual noise. It took a minute for everyone to realize what happened or what didn't happen." I sighed out into the cup of coffee Iris handed me. My head throbbed, trying to put the past few hours into factual words. We were in the woods, in the unclaimed land between the packs. We had made a temporary meet-up place here after the anti-climatic scene. We were checking in with Iris and giving our minds a break from the heavy atmosphere surrounding the Alpha's family.Iris sat down on the fallen tree beside me. She poured herself some coffee out of the thermos she had brought with her. "I don't even know what to say.""You could tell Luna Emma was relieved, and honestly, I would have been more concerned if she hadn't been." My head hung down, staring down at the ground. "I could never hold it against someone who was relieved that their child did not
RoseWe swept the Red Spruce territory, checking every home and piece of land we could imagine, but we needed help finding Luna Emma or Colton. We knew where Alpha Daughtry was. Surprisingly, he acted like an Alpha should; he was shepherding his pack, ensuring they were alright and keeping the bubbling emotions of fear at bay. I may not have thought much of the man, but in those moments of evacuating his pack, he had a glimmer of redemption, but I knew it wouldn't be enough at the end of this ordeal."Where have we not looked?" Orion groaned as he shoved a handful of hair out of his face. Sweat was starting to drip from his nose because of our widespread search. His eyes scanned the horizon as if the answer would magically appear."What about the graveyard?" Matt questioned with concern in his eyes. I gave him a slight nod in reassurance. "We haven't checked there. There's no shelter, so it wouldn't be an ideal place to go, but then again, nothing about this place is ideal." Orion gr
Rose The seconds that ticked by felt like an eternity as I watched Pru; her body was frozen in place like a statue forgotten by time. The only slight movement I could detect was her chest's slight rise and fall as she breathed. Matt was going to kill me. I paced around Pru and the demonic crystal; the only noises were the distant water drip and my footsteps. Round and round, I went circling Pru and that crystal. I felt like a vulture circling a dead carcass and shivered at the thought. I stopped before Pru and dropped to my knees, "Pru? Are you okay?" Of course, she wasn't answering me. I don't know what I expected or secretly hoped for. Dread started to claw at the edges of my mind. I felt a brush of warmth caress my mind. It was Delilah. Even though we had not been in sync recently, she was letting me know she was there and that I wasn't alone. "Thanks," I humbly whispered out loud as I stood up and stepped back. Delilah did not answer me, but I felt her warmth as she stayed nea
Pru Air hissed by me as I focused on the fluffy tail of Maera. Before I knew what was happening, my body collided with something so hard my breath from my lungs escaped, as it felt like I had burst through a glass wall. I squinted my eyes shut and threw my arms over my head, trying to protect myself from the impact. When I pried, my eyes opened Maera had vanished. I scrambled to my feet and brushed myself off. No longer was I in the town; I did not know where I had ended up this time. I looked around, finding myself in what looked like a dark cavern. My footsteps echoed softly as I walked along the wall of the cave. I reached my hand up and casually grazed fingers across the border. It wasn’t rock; it was cool to the touch and as smooth as glass. It was crystal; I had finally found my way to the heart. I let out a sigh of relief as I peeled my hand from the wall. I was getting closer. The sooner I was done here, the sooner I could get back to Rose, and the sooner I could get back t
Pru A flash of powerful lightning licked the air around me as I fell into the abysses. The hairs on the back of my neck stood on end as a scorching breeze whizzed past me. The temperature cranked up the further I descended. Sweat rolled off my brow and evaporated instantly, leaving only the whisper of its presence. I couldn’t tell you how long I was falling; it could have been seconds, minutes, or hours. The further I plunged, the quicker I lost track of time. It was just me and the darkness, but this wasn’t the darkness I knew. With every inhale, the air was sharp and painful, almost as if venom was seeping into my veins. Each breath was more brutal than the last; it was like an elephant was stomping on my lungs. Abruptly, dozens of tiny red orbs rained down on me with a crack of irate lightning, the souls. In my freefall, I reached out and touched one of the wisps. It burst into violent flames, and a cloud of thick black smoke poured. I coughed as I tried to wave the smog away, bu
Rose“What do you mean, Pru?” I asked with a shaky voice. I trusted Pru with my life, but my stomach knotted at her words. Why was it best the guys weren’t here?“Do you trust me, Rose?” Pru’s eyes reflect the soft glow of the crystal.“Of course I do, but what are you going to do?”“Promise you won’t tell Matt.” Pru’s eyes fell to the stone floor.“I-I promise.” I gulped and nodded. As soon as the words left my lips, Pru turned to face the crystal.Pru fell to her knees in front of the pedestal and lifted her hands to the crystal. It was only then did it hit me what she was going to do.*************************************************************PruAfter I officially joined the Black Moon pack, Matthew and I had some growing pains. I was introduced to a new place, a new lif
RoseThe floorboards creaked underneath our feet as Pru and I crept through the empty packhouse. Even though I knew no one was around, I couldn’t help but shake the feeling that we were being watched.“Rose,” Pru’s voice was soft and comforting. She wasn’t looking for a response. If anything, she was reassuring me that I wasn’t alone in this, that she would be by my side.I nodded at her and tried to lift my chin higher as we walked to Luna Emma’s study. Did Pru and I know what we were doing? Hell, no, but we would wing it until we destroyed that damn crystal.Once we were in Luna Emma’s study, Pru’s eyes ran wild, taking in everything she could. If we had the time, I knew she would love to go through everything in the room and soak up all the information she could.I immediately stepped up to the desk like it was second nature and rummaged through the drawer to open the secret passage. I hear
Orion I watched as a sea of confused faces streamed past me into the forest. Children, women, and men filed past me. Each one was more oblivious than the last. I couldn’t believe this was where we were at now. I had never even thought about potentially evacuating my pack, but then again, I had never tried to kill them all. There is no way we could have asked Iris to try to convince Alpha Avi to have Lunar Lake house any more of the Red Cedar pack members. After the magic was snuffed out, or maybe even contained, what was going to happen? There was no way in hell I would just leave Alpha Daughtry and Luna Emma in charge of their pack. I doubt there was any hope for them. If their pack members didn’t kill them first, we would have to report them to the council. Realistic
Rose The sun lazily crept through the curtains of the packhouse, shedding a golden pool onto a fruit bowl on the countertop. I sat at the kitchen bar, staring at a bruised banana, tapping my fingernails on the counter. The noise echoed throughout the empty room as my heart chaotically hammered away in my chest. It had taken everything in me to walk away from my mate and come back to this house. He was on the other side of the border; he was safe, for now. Matt and Orion were helping evacuate the oblivious pack members. None of the villagers knew the truth; they just knew that they were being forced out of their homes and evacuated into the woods. Eventually, the truth would be revealed, and that is when the shit would hit the fan. All the stability of their pack would
