Rose
After my breakfast with Alaric and Heather, I left them arguing in front of the diner. Alaric would annoy her, and eventually, she would pull herself away from his trap. Whenever she did, Alaric was kind enough to look after my little library until I was done with my meeting with my favorite witches.
A gentle breeze drifted through the streets of the pack. Bleeding hearts, blackeyed Susans, dogwood, and bluebells harmonized with various other wildflowers.
Spring had always been one of my favorite seasons. My mother's garden had come alive and was the most beautiful during that time of year.
Things were a little different now. My mom had a garden at her new home, but it wasn't the same. She would tend and pour her love into the soil. In a year or two, it would be just as breathtaking as her garden had been in Silver Crescent.
"Good morning, Luna." A little child with the sweetest honey eyes called out to me. Her brown curls were tied up in a pair of pigtails.
"Well, good morning to you too, Lyra." I waved to her mom as I crouched down beside my small friend so I could be on her level. "Are you excited for your momma to have your baby brother?"
"Yes, Luna! I can't wait!" Lyra threw her arms out to the side and spun in a circle.
"I'm sure you are going to be the best big sister ever!" I grinned at Lyra as she twirled. I wish I had her energy. "Can you make me a promise?"
Lyra stopped spinning and glanced up at me with her big eyes. Her curls bounced as she cocked her head to the side as Lyra looked at me. "What kind of promise?"
"Can you promise me that you will be the biggest help to your momma?" I held out my pinky to Lyra as a cheek-splitting smile overtook her face.
"Of course! That's what big sisters are for!" Lyra locked her pinky around mine before going back to spinning in a circle.
"You are so good with her." Lyra's mom, Nova, beamed at me as she rested her hands on top of her very pregnant belly. Nova had the most beautiful caramel skin on a regular day. Still, something about the pregnancy glow just made her even more pulchritudinous. "When do you think you and the Alpha will start having pups of your own?"
I hated that question. I was starting to get it a lot more frequently. My stomach churned at the thought.
I knew the pack members meant well, but we still needed to track down Mister Clay. I wasn't ready for that responsibility. I don't think anyone could really hold it against me. I knew they wanted a pup to show that there was a future leader of the pack, but they could wait a little bit longer.
I plastered on my best fake smile and tried to add an extra tablespoon of sweetness to my tone. "Ha, no plans quite yet. If I could get a guaranteed angel like Lyra, I would be more inclined to have one sooner rather than later." I stood back up to look Nova in the eyes as she spoke.
"Don't let those cute curls fool you, Luna. I caught her trying to flush my good tea towels down the toilet."
"Oh no!" I sucked through my teeth. I definitely wasn't ready for someone trying to flush my belongings. Poor Nova didn't realize how much she was making me not want a kid right now.
"I know; she better be glad she is so stinking cute." Nova caught her daughter's hand and grinned at her. "It was nice to see you, Luna! We have to go pick up a couple things for the baby."
"It was nice to see you as well. Make sure to get some rest! Be good for your momma, Lyra!" I waved after them as they started to walk away down the sidewalk towards the shops.
"Bye, Luna!" Lyra turned to walk backward as she waved to me. Her lilac dress danced around her as she twirled back to walking forward and latching hands with her mom.
I had a soft spot for the youth of Black Moon; I wanted to do better for them than my Alpha had done for me as a child. I think Harriet, Heather, and Matt felt the same way. We all made the effort that our previous leaders never did.
I made my way through the village, snaking through the streets until I reached a dirt path that cut into the forest. I always liked coming to Pru and Matt's house. Just the walk there felt utterly magical.
Orion had offered them an assortment of houses in the central area. Some of those houses were ones that plenty of pack members would have done anything short of killing for. Pru respectfully declined, and Matt supported his mate.
After seeing where she lived, I understood why she didn't want to live so close to everyone. During the premonition about her being kidnapped, if there wasn't a kidnapping being taken place, I would have admired her little nook in the world. The bustle of the town wasn't appealing to her, and it never would be.
Before, she lived hidden in the woods where the world rarely reached her. She had tranquility and peace. The thought of people constantly walking by her home must have wholly freaked her out.
Pru and Matt's home is still technically in the village but off the beaten path, literally. Ivy, honeysuckle, and wisteria dripped from the trees that lined the route. The trail was just wide enough for Matt's truck to fit down, but he rarely drove it anyways.
Just walking through the forest, it felt as if magic was rushing through my veins. I guess you could say that magic already did run in my veins, but this was different.
After a ten-minute walk, I finally made my way into the clearing where Pru and Matt's little cottage sat. I walked through the rows of herbs and flowers that lined the path to the front door.
Every time I came here, it amazed me that they had done all of this in the past year. However, the natural beauty was all Pru. Her affinity may lie in the shadows, but she had a gift to coax plants to grow like they had lived there for years.
According to Pru, it was just a cheap party trick, and if any decent witch was in touch with nature, they could do it too. I didn't believe her. I verified with Brigid, and of course, that was not the case. Witches could pick up a skill from another affinity but rarely one as advanced as growing plants at will.
Matt and Pru's cottage was made from large logs of oak with a thatched roof. It radiated coziness, love, and magic. It was all Pru, but you would randomly catch snippets of Matt thrown in.
My fingers curled around the heavy brass knocker and drummed it against the door twice. A moment later, Pru opened the door for me. Her brown hair was braided down her back. She wore a simple black dress with no shoes.
"Good morning. Come on in." Pru smiled as she ushered me into her home. The smell of dried herbs greeted me as I stepped into the cottage.
"Morning, child," Brigid called to me from across the room. She was tucked in a chair at the table with a coffee cup in hand. Her wispy hair was falling out of her french twist, which meant she didn't sleep well. Brigid was getting older, and that terrified me.
"Morning, ladies." I immediately went behind Brigid's chair and unclasped her hair. A cascade of white hair fell onto her shoulders.
"You don't have to do that." Brigid fussed at me and tried to swat away my hands.
"Just because I don't have to doesn't mean I don't want to. Now hold still." I pushed her hands away and began to run my fingers through her hair. I quickly twisted her hair back into her regular hairstyle and fastened it with her clip. "Now, was that so bad?"
Brigid grumbled a begrudging "Thank you" before taking a long swig of her coffee.
I smiled and shook my head as I sat down beside her.
"Do you want some coffee?" Pru called from her tiny kitchen, her hand resting on a dainty teacup hanging from the wall.
"No, thank you, but if you have some of your lavender lemonade made, I would love a glass." I beamed. Pru always had some delicious treats tucked away in her home, but her lavender lemonade was my favorite.
"Of course, I always make it if I know you are coming over." Pru pulled the pitcher of purple heaven out of her fridge and filled a tall glass for me.
"Why don't I get special treats?" Matt appeared in the doorway. The unpleasant odor of man sweat threatened to gag me.
"When you are the Luna of the pack, I'll make you whatever you want." Pru placed the glass in front of me before walking over to Matt to place a peck on his cheek.
"Hey, is being the Gamma not enough for you?" Matt snuck his arm around Pru's waist, keeping her close. Poor Pru for having to put up with that. She probably didn't mind the smell since she didn't have the sense of smell that werewolves did.
"It's not enough for me." Brigid innocently glanced up at Matt before taking another sip of her coffee.
"Damn, and that is what I was going for." Matt grinned at Brigid before kissing Pru on the lips. "I'm going to go shower. Have a good meeting, ladies."
With that, Matt disappeared up the small flight of stairs. Pru tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear before sitting down in the chair beside me.
"So, Mister Clay?" I questioned as Pru pulled a stack of papers and a book from the center of the table towards her.
"As you know, the last place we could find him was down in Texas, but we don't think he is anywhere close to there now." Pru opened the book to a page with black spirals doodled over a quick sketch of the country.
"Where do you think he is then?" I sighed as I brought my glass to my lips and took a small sip.
"North," Brigid spoke up.
"North?"
"We haven't been able to find a tangible lead on him yet." Pru splayed her fingers across her face as she rubbed her temples.
"Then why North?" I leaned onto my elbows and glanced at the spirals, trying to make sense of what in the world they meant.
"You know how sometimes you will get a word or a quick image of a premonition?"
"Yeah?"
"It was like I got a quick flash of his shadow. I couldn't track him, but I tried to dive in, and he was blocking me. I only was able to get a grainy shadow that slipped out of my fingers like sand. Every time I tried to reach out, his shadow became smaller and smaller until it disappeared altogether." Pru looked up at the ceiling. I could see the disappointment etched in her furrowed brows.
"What about you?" I turned to Brigid; just seeing her face, I knew she didn't have any answers either.
"The shadows don't like me as much as they like Pru." Brigid offered a smile that was meant from Pru. "They play with me from time to time, but they still hold a grudge."
"Well, what do the grainy shadows have to do with North?" I gnawed on my lip.
"That's where the trail was leading when it disappeared." Pru stood up from the table, her chair scraped against the floor as she made her way to the window. Pru peered out into the woods like she was searching for some type of answer that no one else could comprehend. "I'm sorry I keep letting you down."
I immediately jumped to my feet and almost climbed over Brigid to get to Pru. "You have never let me down. Don't say that. You never had to do any of this. I'm sorry if we made you feel like you had to do any of this." I grasped her hand in mine. "This is my fault for pressuring you."
"No, I want to help. I just have never had this type of blockage before." Pru squeezed my hand.
"You know, my mother was particularly blessed with concealment magic. Once she ran away from the pack, she hid us for years. Well, until the shadows convinced me to ruin it. I wonder if Mister Clay has found his own Greta." Brigid looked down into her mug of coffee. Her knuckles turned white until the cup shattered in her hands. "Oh, I am so sorry, Pru!"
"Oh, don't worry about it, Brigid." Pru grabbed a towel and began to sop up the coffee.
"The old bird is still strong. Don't let her fool you." Matt descended the steps with a towel hanging over his shirtless shoulders.
"Who are you calling an old bird?"
RoseThe evening air was cool and damp from a spring shower earlier in the afternoon. The sun was dipping low behind the trees offering its last beams of peach, purple, and pink light.I slung my bag over my shoulder as I locked up my library for the night and gently tugged on the door handle for good measure. It's not like anyone besides Alaric would bother breaking into it. Not unless they wanted to read under the moonlight and sneak my chocolate-covered coffee beans.Sneaking my treat would be a crime but not one I could punish anyone for doing. The only one who got a sick joy from stealing my food was Harriet, and I rarely saw her in my library."Good evening, Luna." A freshly mated couple nodded as they walked arm in arm past me on the sidewalk."Have a good evening." I smiled.I let my eyes linger after them as they wandered past the small shopping area. I remembered the excitement and rush of finding your mate, finding that missing pi
Rose"The rules are simple; the last person standing at the end with the most flags is the winner." Damian plopped a canvas bag down on the ground with a thud. "You can spar. You can steal multiple flags from your opponents. You cannot ask for outside assistance. You cannot knock out your opponents. You can't hide flags. You cannot shift. You are to stay in the forest, do not bring your game into town. At the end of two hours, the game is over.""Whose idea was this?" Iris groaned as she snatched a purple flag from her brother's hand. Iris tied her flag around her wrist and pulled off her bob-length bubblegum wig. She sighed exasperatedly as she gently placed her wig in her backpack. Her bald head gleamed in the afternoon sun. After I shaved her head, she decided
Rose"Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday, dear Heather. Happy birthday to you." I whispered in Heather's ear as I lay beside her in her bed. I slowly brushed the hair out of her face.Heather swatted at my hand as she rolled away from me. She was still asleep and seemed to have no desire or want to wake up."How long do you think she is going to sleep?" I groaned as I rolled off the bed.Harriet sat on the floor, bouncing a ball off of the wall. "I told you she would do this.""You said she would hide out in the house all day. You didn't say that she would sleep all day." I plopped down on the floor beside Harriet and snatched her ball."Close enough," Harriet muttered as she threw her head back. "We could have slept in our own beds at this rate.""Oh, come on. We had a sleepover for your 18th birthday." I elbowed her in the ribs."I didn't sleep until noon, though.""You know I can hear you two
AlaricI knew the first moment that I saw her that I was drawn to her. At the time, she was just a wolf trying to stop me. Ironically trying to stop me from saving her sister's ex-boyfriend.Even then, I wanted to talk to her, wanted to get under her skin. I craved to break down her walls and become close to her, no matter how difficult it may be.In the weeks leading up to her birthday, I constantly provoked her. I made sure she knew I wanted her in my own unique way. I am sure I looked more like a fool than I do on a regular basis.I flirted, teased, and followed her. I felt like a love-sick puppy chasing after someone who didn't want them.
Rose"Stop it." Orion's arms slipped around my waist from behind as his beard nuzzled into the base of my neck, tickling my skin."I'm not doing anything." I slightly whined as I looked out the window, following the trail of street lamps towards the heart of town."Yes, you are." Orion's words were like silk gliding down my skin, making me melt like butter in his arms. "You are staring down the street, waiting for Heather or Alaric to come and talk to you. No one is going to come and talk to you this late, flower.""Meh, maybe I am, maybe I'm not." Of course, he was right. He knew me so well. Most of the time, I loved it but not right now. Right now, I just wanted to be nosy. Could anyone really blame me for it?"Give them some time. They'll come around.""Yeah, I know. I'm just used to both of them telling me everything, and it's like they have kicked everyone out of their little bubble.""You know when you find your mate, and there
Rose"So she kicked you out?" Harriet loudly slurped her tea as she leaned over the counter of the bar. I rolled my eyes at her as I continued to slice up the pineapple in front of me.It had been a few days since I visited the ethereal realm. It felt like an eternity. Each day seemed to go by slower and slower. I had only told Orion about Selene sending me away; that was until this morning when a mop of curly hair appeared."Pretty much." I sighed as I tossed the spiky crown into the bucket I used to deliver my mom fruit and vegetable remains for her compost bin."Dang, you must have pissed her off good, Rosie Posie." Harriet obnoxiously snorted before looking down into her cup. Maybe Harriet wasn't the best choice for a sounding board about what happened."Honestly, I doubt there is any reason to worry about it. Maybe mating a blessed wolf is something spiritual or a huge deal for her?" Harriet shrugged her shoulders."Maybe...it was odd t
Rose Days turned into weeks, we still had no new information on Mister Clay, and I still hadn't been brave enough to go back to the ethereal realm. I wanted answers, of course, but I always chickened out anytime I had decided to see Selene. Who was this new blessed wolf? Were there others? A couple of times, I thought about trying to trigger a premonition about this new blessed wolf. I knew it wouldn't work, not unless our paths were weaved together in some fashion. Since the demise of the Fallen Moon rogues, that was one thing I had figured out. All of my premonitions around that time were tied to me in some way. The fire, Pru getting kidnapped, Leto getting marked by Hades, going inside the map to see the church camp, and even Iris
Rose Sweat slowly dripped down my body as I dodged Iris's foot. I didn't have time to think about anything as I blocked Harriet's fist. I slightly groaned as I rolled away from them. It had been like this all training. Honestly, it had been like this for a while. I wasn't the strongest or the fastest fighter, but I could dodge and block. That was only thanks to my premonitions. The girls seemed to make it a game to see who could land hits on me. It may be fun for them, but I didn't find it enjoyable. "It's supposed to be a free-for-all, not everybody gang up on me," I grumbled as I scrambled to my feet to tackle Iris to the ground. "Where would be the fun in that?" Harriet grinned as she swung at Heather. Iris tried to wriggle her way out from underneath me, but I just stayed sprawled out on her, watching Harriet and Heather go at each other. "I'm not a couch." Iris groaned as she tried to roll out. "Yeah, let's call it here." Damian's
Rose"It was like watching a bad car crash; you couldn't look away, but instead of a gory blood bath, nothing happened. Not even a spark or unusual noise. It took a minute for everyone to realize what happened or what didn't happen." I sighed out into the cup of coffee Iris handed me. My head throbbed, trying to put the past few hours into factual words. We were in the woods, in the unclaimed land between the packs. We had made a temporary meet-up place here after the anti-climatic scene. We were checking in with Iris and giving our minds a break from the heavy atmosphere surrounding the Alpha's family.Iris sat down on the fallen tree beside me. She poured herself some coffee out of the thermos she had brought with her. "I don't even know what to say.""You could tell Luna Emma was relieved, and honestly, I would have been more concerned if she hadn't been." My head hung down, staring down at the ground. "I could never hold it against someone who was relieved that their child did not
RoseWe swept the Red Spruce territory, checking every home and piece of land we could imagine, but we needed help finding Luna Emma or Colton. We knew where Alpha Daughtry was. Surprisingly, he acted like an Alpha should; he was shepherding his pack, ensuring they were alright and keeping the bubbling emotions of fear at bay. I may not have thought much of the man, but in those moments of evacuating his pack, he had a glimmer of redemption, but I knew it wouldn't be enough at the end of this ordeal."Where have we not looked?" Orion groaned as he shoved a handful of hair out of his face. Sweat was starting to drip from his nose because of our widespread search. His eyes scanned the horizon as if the answer would magically appear."What about the graveyard?" Matt questioned with concern in his eyes. I gave him a slight nod in reassurance. "We haven't checked there. There's no shelter, so it wouldn't be an ideal place to go, but then again, nothing about this place is ideal." Orion gr
Rose The seconds that ticked by felt like an eternity as I watched Pru; her body was frozen in place like a statue forgotten by time. The only slight movement I could detect was her chest's slight rise and fall as she breathed. Matt was going to kill me. I paced around Pru and the demonic crystal; the only noises were the distant water drip and my footsteps. Round and round, I went circling Pru and that crystal. I felt like a vulture circling a dead carcass and shivered at the thought. I stopped before Pru and dropped to my knees, "Pru? Are you okay?" Of course, she wasn't answering me. I don't know what I expected or secretly hoped for. Dread started to claw at the edges of my mind. I felt a brush of warmth caress my mind. It was Delilah. Even though we had not been in sync recently, she was letting me know she was there and that I wasn't alone. "Thanks," I humbly whispered out loud as I stood up and stepped back. Delilah did not answer me, but I felt her warmth as she stayed nea
Pru Air hissed by me as I focused on the fluffy tail of Maera. Before I knew what was happening, my body collided with something so hard my breath from my lungs escaped, as it felt like I had burst through a glass wall. I squinted my eyes shut and threw my arms over my head, trying to protect myself from the impact. When I pried, my eyes opened Maera had vanished. I scrambled to my feet and brushed myself off. No longer was I in the town; I did not know where I had ended up this time. I looked around, finding myself in what looked like a dark cavern. My footsteps echoed softly as I walked along the wall of the cave. I reached my hand up and casually grazed fingers across the border. It wasn’t rock; it was cool to the touch and as smooth as glass. It was crystal; I had finally found my way to the heart. I let out a sigh of relief as I peeled my hand from the wall. I was getting closer. The sooner I was done here, the sooner I could get back to Rose, and the sooner I could get back t
Pru A flash of powerful lightning licked the air around me as I fell into the abysses. The hairs on the back of my neck stood on end as a scorching breeze whizzed past me. The temperature cranked up the further I descended. Sweat rolled off my brow and evaporated instantly, leaving only the whisper of its presence. I couldn’t tell you how long I was falling; it could have been seconds, minutes, or hours. The further I plunged, the quicker I lost track of time. It was just me and the darkness, but this wasn’t the darkness I knew. With every inhale, the air was sharp and painful, almost as if venom was seeping into my veins. Each breath was more brutal than the last; it was like an elephant was stomping on my lungs. Abruptly, dozens of tiny red orbs rained down on me with a crack of irate lightning, the souls. In my freefall, I reached out and touched one of the wisps. It burst into violent flames, and a cloud of thick black smoke poured. I coughed as I tried to wave the smog away, bu
Rose“What do you mean, Pru?” I asked with a shaky voice. I trusted Pru with my life, but my stomach knotted at her words. Why was it best the guys weren’t here?“Do you trust me, Rose?” Pru’s eyes reflect the soft glow of the crystal.“Of course I do, but what are you going to do?”“Promise you won’t tell Matt.” Pru’s eyes fell to the stone floor.“I-I promise.” I gulped and nodded. As soon as the words left my lips, Pru turned to face the crystal.Pru fell to her knees in front of the pedestal and lifted her hands to the crystal. It was only then did it hit me what she was going to do.*************************************************************PruAfter I officially joined the Black Moon pack, Matthew and I had some growing pains. I was introduced to a new place, a new lif
RoseThe floorboards creaked underneath our feet as Pru and I crept through the empty packhouse. Even though I knew no one was around, I couldn’t help but shake the feeling that we were being watched.“Rose,” Pru’s voice was soft and comforting. She wasn’t looking for a response. If anything, she was reassuring me that I wasn’t alone in this, that she would be by my side.I nodded at her and tried to lift my chin higher as we walked to Luna Emma’s study. Did Pru and I know what we were doing? Hell, no, but we would wing it until we destroyed that damn crystal.Once we were in Luna Emma’s study, Pru’s eyes ran wild, taking in everything she could. If we had the time, I knew she would love to go through everything in the room and soak up all the information she could.I immediately stepped up to the desk like it was second nature and rummaged through the drawer to open the secret passage. I hear
Orion I watched as a sea of confused faces streamed past me into the forest. Children, women, and men filed past me. Each one was more oblivious than the last. I couldn’t believe this was where we were at now. I had never even thought about potentially evacuating my pack, but then again, I had never tried to kill them all. There is no way we could have asked Iris to try to convince Alpha Avi to have Lunar Lake house any more of the Red Cedar pack members. After the magic was snuffed out, or maybe even contained, what was going to happen? There was no way in hell I would just leave Alpha Daughtry and Luna Emma in charge of their pack. I doubt there was any hope for them. If their pack members didn’t kill them first, we would have to report them to the council. Realistic
Rose The sun lazily crept through the curtains of the packhouse, shedding a golden pool onto a fruit bowl on the countertop. I sat at the kitchen bar, staring at a bruised banana, tapping my fingernails on the counter. The noise echoed throughout the empty room as my heart chaotically hammered away in my chest. It had taken everything in me to walk away from my mate and come back to this house. He was on the other side of the border; he was safe, for now. Matt and Orion were helping evacuate the oblivious pack members. None of the villagers knew the truth; they just knew that they were being forced out of their homes and evacuated into the woods. Eventually, the truth would be revealed, and that is when the shit would hit the fan. All the stability of their pack would
