Chapter 44

Maria’s POV

I walk up to Aria’s apartment, my heart filled with excitement. I can't wait to share my good news. I got the promotion and the deal we had been working hard for. I imagine her smile, and the bright happiness in her eyes when she hears it.

I knock on her door, but there’s no answer. “Aria! It’s Maira!” I call out, a bit louder this time. Something doesn’t feel right. Usually, she would at least respond or open the door.

I push the door open and step inside. The apartment is dark. The curtains are pulled tight, blocking out sunlight. “Aria?” I call again, but only silence answers. My stomach twists with worry.

As I move through the living room, my heart drops. I see her lying at the bottom of the stairs. “No!” I scream, rushing to her side. Panic fills me. Blood is everywhere, and her face is pale and lifeless. “What happened?”

I drop to my knees beside her, checking for a pulse. My hands tremble as I feel for any sign of life. “Aria, please!” I plead. I can’t lose her. I g
