Callista.

Soon the evening arrives, and it’s time to get the newest era of my life started.

I dress in a pure white embroidered dress for the ceremony - the traditional clothing for the eighteen-year-old female attendees that symbolizes purity and rebirth. My face is void of makeup, and my newly washed and dried hair flows down my back, unadorned. It's been a while since I look at myself in the mirror this bare. I'd have enjoyed the experience more if my mother's words had stopped circulating in my head. She had purposefully messed up with my mind. She's wrong. Farris will be mate, I'm certain of it.

My family had already left for the ceremony. They were grumbling when they left, true to their character. At least they would be present there, even if it's tradition dictated. I try not to let that our me. After all, I'm used to that kind of treatment.

I wait outside the house for a bus, not getting a lift from Farris because it’s bad luck for the Alpha to see the girls before we arrive at our coming-of-age event. As I wait under the trees near the bus stop, I receive a text from him.

Farris: After the ceremony, I’ll meet you outside your place, and then we can go out to dinner. I’ll have a few things to do after the presentations.

As the Alpha, Farris will have a lot of parents to greet as well as senior members of the pack to mingle with. So, it will be quite a busy night for him.

Me: Sure. Can’t wait to see you.

Farris: Me too, darling. Are you feeling alright?

Me: A bit nervous. What if everything goes badly?

Farris: That's not going to happen, Cally. Everything will be okay. Don’t worry if you don’t find your wolf today. It happens sometimes.

Me: I hope I find out you're my mate. I don't know what I will do if that won't be the case.

Farris: I'm sure I will be your mate. We love each other, right? Mates always love each other first.

Me: Yeah. Love you.

Farris: I love you too. Just have a good night, you know you’re my only choice. I’ll see you later.

Farris: You’re going to be the prettiest girl there you know. I’m so lucky you’re mine.

Me: And I, you. I can’t wait. Love you so much <3.

Farris: <333.

I smile as I put my phone away, boarding the bus to reach the ceremonial circle near the pack house where the rituals are performed.

The path that leads to the pack house is decorated with serene lanterns, and the house itself with fairy lights. As the sun slowly sets on the horizon, they glow beautifully in bright organic patterns between the wooden benches that have been laid out for the guests. Lilies are strewn over the seats and in the aisles - another ritual symbol for our ceremony. The scene before me seems ethereal and dreamy. I catch a glimpse of my family on the sidelines, along with all the other families, and for a moment, I let myself think that everything is perfect, that my family doesn't hate me, I will finally turn to my wolf and find my mate to be Farris and today will be the best day ever.

I find Esther, and together we sit near the podium where the Alpha will speak and then give us each a drink from the ceremonial cup that has belonged to the pack for generations. But before that, the attendees will perform a traditional dance with white ribbons that we’ve been trained months for. The audience fills up as my excitement soars, and in no time I’m bouncing in my seat.

The musicians play a short melody to announce the beginning of the ceremony, and the crowd quietens. I look up to the podium where Farris is making a speech about new beginnings and talking about the accomplishments of the young adults in the pack. There are also guys in our group who are turning eighteen. They stand in their white linen clothing beside us, moving to take up their positions opposite to us when the music signals the dance to begin.

The dance begins, swanlike and graceful as everyone moves together as if we are bound by the same thread. We twist and twirl, swaying our hips with smiles on our faces, letting the music guide us. The otherworldly atmosphere is only disturbed by the wolves revealing themselves to the dancers, twirling them away from the group as a second voice in their consciousness. There is a tingling in my brain as well although faint. I feel eyes on me, and I know that is because I’m Farris’s lover.

Quite possibly the future Luna.

‘Come on, my wolf,’ I pray, “Show yourself to me, please.’

The dance ends, leaving me with slight disappointment regarding my wolf being no show. I bow to my partner Derek and return to the seats reserved for the ones turning eighteen. We wait for our turns to walk up to the podium and accept the cup from Farris. Some of the girls before me are dizzy from the first stirrings of the wolves inside them. I watch with curiosity as they receive praise from Farris now that they are conscious adults in the circle. When it’s my turn to walk up, insecurity floods me as I haven’t found my wolf during the dance.

I walk up the steps to meet Farris when I feel a piercing pain in my head. I drop to my knees as the world tilts on its edge. My entire being is blazing from a fire within me. Faintly, I hear Farris’s voice yelling at me, but the pain keeps me from deciphering what he’s saying. I feel someone wrap their arms around me, and Farris’s voice, frightened and caring, whispers in my ear, trying to soothe me. Tears flow down my face like molten lava.  Farris’s words make my head hurt more, and I finally cry out.

The most bizarre thing happens. Men from all around me spring to the dais, their predatory gazes latching onto me. I see them approaching through tear-blurred eyes, I hear Farris growl at them. Then I feel hands, on my ankles and knees and hair and dress, pulling at me as my lover furiously yells and pushes them away.

“Mate. I’ve found her at last,” one of the men says.

“I have another mate…” says another.

 “She’s mine!” says the third.

“Let me go!” I scream, trying to get away. What is happening?!

Farris is overwhelmed by the mass of men surrounding me, and panic seizes my brain as the revolting touches increase in frequency. I cannot move, I am trapped. Through the crowd, I catch the sight of my adoptive family.

“Help me, please!” I cry out to them, “Mother, Father, Ruelle! Help!”

As I drown in this filthy sea, they watch me with stone-cold eyes glistening with anger, stoic and unmoving. I try to reach them to no avail.

The men surrounding me grow violent, growling and snapping at each other, pushing them away, trying to claim me as their own. I’m shoved around like a rag doll. I scream at the top of my voice for help, and finally, it arrives.

Farris and our Beta, with a few other pack members, shove the men away to make a path towards me, surrounding me from them.

“We need to get out!” Farris says and grabs my hand.

We run, fleeing the stage.

Callista.Morning comes. Pale sun rays stream into the cells through small windows that are too high to reach and too small to crawl through. I didn’t sleep last night, how could I? The ground is uncomfortable, and my head even more. My eyes are heavy, my throat raw. I comb my fingers through my hair, trying to feel a little bit sane.My mind feels blank. I feel like I'd exerted all my available brain cells trying to process everything happening last night. It's all still so bizarre. How can a life change so quickly? This has to be some big misunderstanding, I'm certain of it. I could not be a creature of legend, at least, not such a lousy one. Of all the things to be, a stealer? “You’re awake,” Farris’s voice comes, making me jump a bit. Bitterness floods my heart immediately. His mahogany brown hair catches the light, highlighting the red in it. His handsome face is a mask of indifference, his blue-green eyes staring at me. He is dressed in formal wear, his white shirt tucked int

I could barely believe that the King was willing to do it, you should consider yourself really lucky that he has a feral brother. Think about it, you will be the Alpha King's sister-in-law! The second most powerful female after the Luna. A coveted position that will guarantee you a very comfortable life, filled with titles, and wealth, all for the small price of marrying a Prince.”Farris walks closer, a greedy light in his eyes. "You will be Princess, Callista. Can't you see how generous I am, gifting you this? You ought to be grateful to me for this." "Grateful," I repeat. Who is this man, this Alpha, standing in front of me? I thought Farris was a good man, an honourable one who would never stoop into underhanded tactics like this. I wonder if this whole tale is even true. It seems too much like a de

I leave the cells because I know I’ll fight more with her. She’s always been stubborn - it’s how she gets by with that family of hers. Once upon a time, I thought it was attractive, that fire in her eyes when she gets properly riled up. Before, it was hard to see that glint, though, because Callista's self-control was legendary. She was polite when needed to be, well-mannered, and of course, her looks were her crowning glory, not to mention the keen mind that people often underestimated because of her looks. But it seems now that after finding her true nature, she'd decided that all her finer qualities were not of use anymore. She’s only thinking of herself right now, the selfish girl. She should be grateful for what I’m doing for her. The audacity she has to tell me to my face that I'm lying to her. I

Callista. The guard escorts me to the bathroom. I think about making a run for it, fleeing the cells, fleeing the pack even. But that would be the stupidest thing to do. I didn't even have my wolf form yet. I will have no hopes of outrunning Farris' men pursuing me.There is a plain shower and a bar of soap. The water stings at the scratches on my skin, and I lather the fragrance-less soap into my hair, washing away the grime. At least the water is hot.By the Goddess, I am angry. Hurt too, but more angry. Never have I been demeaned like this before. I’m not some helpless damsel who couldn’t fend off a bunch of widowers off her. I could control my scent, with practice, I could protect myself. I wasn’t as much of a weakling as Farris suggested. I'm a werewolf regardless of any abnormality I might have and werewolves are strong. I will be able to overcome this if only I am given a chance. There had to be a way for me to remain in the pack.Who was I kidding? No one wanted me here now.

Theon.Stepping outside the boundaries of my pack is always risky. I feel the danger raise the hairs of my neck every time. I have as many enemies as those who respect me, and the price that rests on my head is frankly unbelievable.Foreboding is not a stranger. But this time, I feel it more keenly than ever before. The fact that I do not trust Alpha Farris Leighwen only adds to it. As the Wolf King of this land, it was my responsibility to inspect every pack in my territory at least once a year. There are 70 wolf packs in the USA, and I have to vet through all of them. I have a duty to help each and every wolf in my Kingdom, the Lycan Kingdom of North America, and I took those duties seriously I probably should. In order to do that, I visit as often as I can, discretely, of course. Knowing that the King was visiting would create quite a commotion, and I hate crowds. As much as I love to take her somewhere private and ask her all sorts of questions (she’s my mate, oh, Goddess, I’ve finally found my mate!), I have a duty first. I cannot help but be annoyed with the whole situation, but if not for this, I would not have met Ruelle. Are you as stupid as you are incompetent?”From the corner of my eyes, I notice the entirety of Ruelle’s family moving back with fear in their expressions. For now, I ignore it.“I didn’t have a choice, Alpha, she would have murdered the whole pack if I hadn’t!” Leighwen tries to excuse himself. The stealer whimpers pathetically as if she is trying to defend herself. CallistaAs soon as I exit the room, I stumble upon a girl who screams upon seeing me.I arm myself with my chain, not caring about her age. She looks old enough to have found her bear. The chain is bundled up with the piece of the bed post and the padlock, giving it a good heft, and I for a fact know that it would knock her out with one strike. “No, please don't hit me, I'm innocent!” She raises her hands in her defense as she stumbles back against the wall.“Who are you?” I snarl, not believing her entirely.“I just work in the pack house, please, I got nothing to do with what's going on!” The girl pleads, her expression filled with panic and fear. “I'm the one who brought you the food so Master Xaveraq could take them to you!”A quick thought passes through my mind.“You know Xaveraq?” I demand and she nods. “I was the one tending to all his needs. As soon as we burst through the tree line, I notice the house and the army of werebears. There might be three or four dozen of them surrounding the hunting lodge-style house that stands in the middle of a grassy field. Some of them are turned while many of them are still in their human forms.I noticed the Gamma who I fought against, Edwin Teller, in the front, standing with his claws out, ready to attack in any given movement. The information the devil revealed today doesn't help me either. I still can't wrap my head around all of it.Of all the things to happen to me, I never expected that I'd end up a prisoner to an ancient being who killed thousands just because he wanted to ‘unify all races to save the world’. I mean, come on, that sounds like the plot of an action-packed Hollywood movie. And certainly not one with the supernatural in it. But that is the reality I'm living in. Books were not invented yet. When she asked her servants about the strange emotion she felt whenever she saw the devil they wouldn't give her a straight answer. The servants were certain that the deviless couldn't feel love the way the normal folk did. The poor deviless was confused about herself and decided to ask the young devil warrior for answers herself.”The Headmistress pauses to glance at the barrier, and then turns back to us.
