I stood there, frozen in place, my mind reeling with the meaning of Claire’s words. Ryker? Applying healing balm on me? It didn't make any sense. He had been so angry with me, so furious that I was certain if my head had been served to him on a platter at that moment, it would have made up a nice meal for him.

And yet...and yet, it seemed that he had taken the time to tend to my wound, to soothe the pain that he himself had inflicted.

I didn’t even realize he knew he’d hurt me. He had been so blinded by his rage to stop to notice my pain. So how did that happen?

I tried to chalk it down to my imagination, to tell myself that it couldn't possibly have been Ryker. But I knew what I had heard, what I had felt. Someone had entered my room that night, and the next morning, the bruise was mysteriously gone. It couldn't have been a coincidence.

Claire's words came back to me, her statement that only Ryker had access to the healing balm. I felt a shiver run down my spine as I realized that it

I walked downstairs, my heart racing as different questions swirled in my mind. The mere thought of this visitor being Derrick filled me with a sense of dread that threatened to consume me and it felt like ice seeping through my veins. My palms grew sweaty, and my legs felt like jelly. I held my breath, my eyes fixed on the floor as I descended the stairs. My heartbeat spiked, and the maid turned to me with a curious look, but I ignored her, not wanting to break down.As I reached the bottom step, the guest stood up, and I raised my eyes to meet his gaze. Time seemed to stand still as our eyes locked. My mind went blank, and all I could do was stare. The man stood proud and tall, his muscular build towering over me, and I subtly pinched myself to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. But all I got was the painful sting, yet, I didn’t wake up. I was still standing right there in front of him, definitely not dreaming.Too lost in my thoughts, I vaguely heard the maid excuse herself and leave.Th

I was still reeling from the emotional reunion with my uncle when a thunderous growl shook me to my core, jolting me back to reality. I looked up to see Ryker standing in front of me, his eyes blazing with fury. But it wasn't just his eyes that caught my attention - his entire body had transformed. His fangs were bared, his claws were out, and his skin was covered in a thick, black-blue fur that seemed to ripple with anger. He looked bigger, and his shirt shredded apart, making him look five times scarier than he normally would. He looked like his wolf was just a second way from bursting forth. My heart jumped into my throat as I took in the sight of him. I had never seen him like this before, and I couldn't help but feel a little intimidated, scared even. But as I looked into his eyes, I saw that his anger wasn't directed at me - it was directed at my uncle."What the fuck are you doing here?" Ryker snarled, his voice sending chills down my spine. He took a step closer to my uncle,

I watched as Arianna glared at me, her eyes flashing with anger and hurt. She was shaking, her small body trembling with rage, and for a moment, I felt a pang of guilt. But it was quickly replaced by anger, anger at Elijah, anger at the world, anger at everything. As I stood there, my mind was a jumble of conflicting emotions. I was angry, yes, but I was also hurt. Hurt that Elijah had come to my home, hurt that he had talked to Arianna, hurt that he had disrespected me in my own territory after everything he had done to me.I thought back to the moment I had seen Elijah standing in my living room, talking to Arianna. His eyes were so tender like the hypocrite he was, and Arianna, knowing how gullible and naive she was, I already knew she had fallen into his web. I had felt a surge of anger, a surge of possessiveness. Who did he think he was to show his face here, and why was he talking to my Arianna? But as I looked at Arianna now, I saw the fear in her eyes, the hurt. And I felt a p

I sat in the dining room, staring blankly at the wide spread of breakfast in front of me. The aroma of freshly baked bread and sizzling bacon wafted through the air, making my stomach growl with hunger. But despite the tantalizing smells and even more mouthwatering sights, I couldn't bring myself to take a bite. My mind was elsewhere, my thoughts consumed by the events of the past two days.My eyes kept flickering towards the stairs, trying to see if Ryker would come downstairs. It had been two days since that explosive argument, but he had kept himself locked in his room. I knew he was around because I would occasionally hear the sound of shuffling, things being moved or something being broken. It was as if he was trying to avoid me, and I didn't blame him. I didn't want to face him either. The memory of our argument kept replaying in my mind no matter how hard I tried to block it out. I didn't want to relive that moment, didn't want to face the emotions that came with it. So I sat t

I stood frozen in the doorway, my eyes fixed on the scene before me. I blinked severally to make it go away, but it wouldn’t leave. Ryker was sitting behind his desk, a woman perched on his lap. Her hands were all over him, her fingers tracing the lines of his face, her palms pressed against his chest. Ryker looked bored and his eyes were fixed on some point in front of him, but he didn't push her away. Which meant he wanted her.I felt like I'd been punched in the gut. The air was knocked out of me, and I couldn't breathe. I tried to process what I was seeing, but my mind was whirling with emotions. There was absolutely nothing going on between Ryker and I, but at the same time, there was so much going on for me to feel hurt.I hated how easily attached I’d gotten to him even when he showed all of his red flags right in my face. I hated how he could do whatever he wanted because he felt like he was untouchable, but most of all, I hated how my heart broke as I watched the man, who w

I walked out of the study, walking two times faster and not daring to look back because I had a feeling that if I did, Ryker would be there to drag me back to my room. When I got to the stairs, and I saw my fears had been for nothing, I took a moment to catch my breath, then my eyes fell on Claire at the bottom of the stairs, pacing frantically.I decided to pull her legs a bit, and I curled my lips downwards, trying to look as sad as I could manage. As soon as she heard me coming, she stopped pacing and rushed to my eyes, but the curiosity in her eyes soon turned to realization as she read the room."Oh no, Arianna, I'm so sorry," she said. "I knew I shouldn't have suggested it. I'm so sorry."She was fretting, and I couldn’t keep up the act anymore.I cracked a smile, and Claire's eyes widened in surprise. "Actually, I'm going out," I said with a wink.Claire's face transformed from concern to shock. "What? Really? How did you manage that?"I shrugged. "I convinced Ryker to let me g

“We’re here,” Claire announced as we pulled up outside a huge shopping center. When we got out of the car, the guards immediately began to give us instructions. "Remember, you are to stay within our sight at all times," one of them growled, his eyes fixed sternly on me. "You are not to try and escape or make any sudden movements. Do you understand?"I rolled my eyes, feeling a surge of annoyance. Did they really think I was going to try and make a break for it? But I nodded anyway, wanting us to hurry along quickly. "Yes, I understand."The guard's expression didn't change, but he nodded curtly. "Good. We'll be walking a few feet behind you at all times. Don't try anything funny."What was actually funny was the fact that I wasn’t even planning on running. I I had somehow surrendered my fate to Ryker. Before coming here, I’d thought staying with him would be hell, but it wasn’t half as bad. Asides from his constant emotional torments, I could almost say I liked it there. Almost. Was t

_Ryker's POV_I glared hard at my computer, trying to focus on the reports in front of me. But my mind kept wandering back to Arianna. I had tried to work, I really had. But I couldn't concentrate. Not when Arianna plagued mh thoughts like a disease, and certainly not when I was mindlinking my guards almost every minute to get an update about Arianna."Anything?" I asked, my voice low and urgent."No, sir," one of the guards replied. "They're still shopping. Arianna seems to be enjoying herself."I nodded, relief rolling through me. At least she was safe. When she had requested to go out, my very first instinct was a big fat no. I had made it clear. I wasn't going to let her leave the house. I was scared, and I had to admit it to myself. I was scared she would leave me. I was scared she would realize I was truly a monster and eventually leave me.I shouldn't be bothered, but I was. Deeply. I had wanted to say no to her, but she pleaded and she gave me those eyes that had unexplainable

I stared at the maid for longer than a beat, my mind still slow from the exhaustion of the night and the tiny prickling ache where my foot met the ground. I heard her loud and clear, but it took me a second longer than usual for them to make complete sense to me.Right! I had a visitor. Those words would always be foreign to me as long as I was within these walls.Seeing the maid staring at me as if she didn’t know whether to repeat her words or remain quiet, I snapped out of it and cleared my throat, resting my weight heavily against the crutches. “Who?” I asked. The maid fidgeted again, and I was vaguely reminded of when I’d met Claire. My heart sank at what had befallen her, and I almost missed the maid’s words.“I don’t know who it is, miss. I’ve never seen him before. I don’t think he’s from this pack,” she said, avoiding my gaze.My breath hitched. The first and last time uncle Elijah had visited, things had gone south very fast. I winced as I recalled Ryker’s untamed anger and

My eyes slowly peeled open, and the first thing that greeted me was the warmth from the sunlight streaming through the slightly parted window.I twisted my body to the side, wincing at the sharp pain that shot through my sides, a more than subtle reminder that I was yet to heal from the accident.Taking a deep breath, I decided to stop trying, and just laid on the bed, my eyes staring blankly at the ceiling.I took in a breath, and was relieved when I was neither greeted by the stench of antiseptic and drugs or the sight of the sterile white walls I’d grown used to at the hospital. It was almost laughable that Ryker’s house, the place I’d hated so much, was now a place I was so happy to be in.I closed my eyes, soaking in the warm air, and the feel of the soft sheets beneath me. But my moment of bliss was soon cut off when a series of thoughts attacked my mind.Everything that happened last night came rushing back in a slideshow, and I felt the familiar tug of pain in my heart.Everyo

“That one’s not finished yet,” he said with so much emotion to evoke only one emotion from me. Curiosity.I stared at the covered canvas and my mind wandered. There were a lot of questions on my mind, but from the way Ryker’s lips thinned, and his eyes grew dark, I didn’t need to be told that that was the end of that conversation.“Ryker….” I started but stopped mid-sentence when something caught my attention behind him.It was a huge painting, not as huge as the unfinished one, but equally big. It was hidden behind an array of broken canvases, with only a small, imperceptible part of it sticking out.I could have easily missed it, but there was something about the neatly-styled raven hair that was visible in the painting that struck me.“That one,” I said, pointing a finger towards the painting. “What’s that one?”My curiosity was piqued by the fact that unlike other portraits that were hanging and scattered across every inch of the wall, covering up all of its dark brown paint, this

My shock level shot up the roof as soon as I stepped into the room. It was dimly lit, but just enough to make me stare with my mouth wide open. From the way the maids had whispered about what was behind this door like it was some top secret, and coupled with Ryker’s reaction to me going close to it the other day, I thought the room would be some sort of torture chamber, slaughter house, or worse, some kind of kinky red room with chains and handcuffs. So imagine my shock when I saw it was a room filled with canvases, painting brushes, and a mix of colors. I turned to Ryker to express my shock, and his eyes were fixed on me, his lips set in a thin line.“Can I….can I look around?” I asked cautiously, careful not to set him off.To my surprise, he shoved his hands into his pockets and nodded. “Take your time.”I turned back around, and hobbled deeper into the room with the help of my clutches. The room was filled with the scent of paint, and it looked like I’d stepped into another world,

_Ryker's POV_I felt like my skin had been scorched by a hundred hot knives, each tugging and peeling at my skin excruciatingly slowly. And all of that, I felt from Arianna’s wordsIt wasn’t the first time I’d heard those words, in fact, I’d heard way worse, but what I didn’t expect was to feel the way I did, like my heart had been ripped out of my chest and I was left to bleed out.I couldn’t remember the last time I let anyone’s words get to me, never mind getting hurt by them. Even my wolf took a blow, and recoiled into my mind. I could sense him silently blaming me for being too hard on her all this while, and pushing her away, now, she was only giving me a taste of my own medicine. It had been minutes since I left the room, but her words still stung kike she’d just said them, and maybe what stung the most was the fact that she was actually right, and I would have remained the same shitty person if that accident hadn’t made me discover who she was, and change my perspective of her

The car slowed down before rolling to a stop at the end of the insanely long driveway. Ryker parked the car and stepped out, and he was by my side of the door in seconds, holding it open for me.I was already trying to help myself out, tired of feeling like an invalid, but Ryker wasn’t having it. He ignored my not-so-strong protest, and scooped me up in his arms bridal style, carrying me towards the house.I should already be used to his arms around me by now, but it never ceases to make my heart flutter, and the feeling of my body pressed against his hard chest, his sturdy and veiny arms holding me up, his mint-coffee breath fanning my face, and his scent filling my lungs, all of it never got old, and each time, butterflies erupted in my belly. For a moment, I felt apprehensive knowing the maids, especially Claire, would see my closeness with Ryker and start to have other thoughts. But that feeling was immediately suppressed by a new, unfamiliar one I could only name as pride. Pride

The door opened, and a young doctor in scrubs walked in with a shaky smile. There was always a new one each time, making me think they dreaded coming to this room. Which they probably did, and it was all thanks to the 6’3 of pure muscles, standing by my side and delivering a death glare to anyone who as much as came a twenty feet radius from me.“Alpha Ryker,” the doctor said, his smile going from shaky to a full grimace as he bowed his head in greeting. Ryker’s response was a forced grunt as he glared lasers at the doctor, and I resisted the urge to roll my eyes. The doctor quickly turned to me, and I could almost touch the relief in his eyes. “Good morning, Arianna.”“Good morning, doctor,” I said with a smile, hoping to make up for Ryker’s ill manners. The doctor visibly relaxed, and a small, genuine smile played on his lips. “How are you doing today, Arianna? Are you feeling any pain or discomfort anywhere?” He asked, touching my affected foot.Surprisingly, it didn’t hurt half a

“And he’s always taking care of you,” she said just when I thought she was done.My frown deepened despite my heartbeat skyrocketing in my chest. The doctors had said it, I’d seen it firsthand when I woke up to him by my bedside after literally shutting him down last night, but I guess I didn’t want to admit what the blood rushing heavily to my ears was telling me. Not until I heard it from the little girl.“Always taking care of me? What do you mean?” I asked, swallowing hard to provide moisture to my dry throat even though I had a good feeling what she meant. The man had literally carried me to the bathroom to help me pee! Now that I thought about it, I felt heat crawling up to my cheeks, but I quickly shook it off, focusing on Susan as she bobbed her head.“He combed your hair everyday when you were sleeping, and he cleaned you up too. He’s always staring at you and he’s always telling me to stay away from your bed and be quiet,” she shrugged her tiny shoulders. My heart slammed ha

I whipped my head to the side, following the sound, and then, my eyes fell on a little flurry of energy, her two ponytails bouncing as she ran towards me, and her bright blue eyes looking up at me.I felt Ryker stiffen and mutter a curse under his breath, and I realized how awkward it was still being in his arms.“Put me down,” I shimmied in his hold, and I felt a growl rumble through his chest, but he walked over to the bed and gently laid me on it.He stood off to the side, and the girl rushed up to me, a very contagious smile on her face as she showcased her missing tooth, just like I’d remembered. The girl at the mall! The samed one I’d tried to save. My heart swelled seeing her again, even though I didn’t think it would be in the hospital.I was about to say something, but a shrill sound beat me to it, and my words got stuck in my throat.“Oh my goodness, Susan!” Susan’s mother burst out. She looked scared. Really scared.Susan halted in her track a few feet from me, and she had
