Prologue
Nineteen Years Ago... Helena wrapped the thick wool blanket tighter around her shoulders, pressing herself closer to the man beside her. His skin, impossibly cool even through layers of clothing, sent shivers down her spine. The ground beneath them had long since lost its warmth with the setting of the sun, and now, the night sky stretched overhead, glittering with countless stars. Her fingers traced the sculpted ridges of his toned abdomen, moving over the crisp button-down shirt he still wore. Slowly, deliberately, she walked her fingers downward until they reached the hem. She hesitated for only a moment when she heard his breath hitch. The slightest tightening of his arms around her was enough to make her heartbeat quicken. He was magnificent. Unnaturally strong, more powerful than any male she had ever known. She bit her lip, willing herself to be bold, and she slid her hand beneath the fabric of his shirt. "Helena," he breathed, his voice husky and filled with restraint. "Your warmth is... intoxicating." His lips skimmed the top of her head, brushing against the dark waves of her hair. The deep timbre of his voice sent another shiver coursing through her, one laced with something far more dangerous than the night’s chill. She tilted her face upward, locking onto the rich maroon depths of his eyes. As if entranced, she wove her fingers into the copper locks framing his face. Her breath catching in her throat at the realization that they were doing this. And this was a line they had never crossed before. It was forbidden. Ever since he had rescued her from the hunter’s trap only months ago, they had met here, at the furthest edge of her pack’s territory. The place where it had all begun. Two Months and One Week Earlier... Helena ran. Faster. Harder. The wind howled past her ears as her silver fur rippled under the moonlight. Her paws barely skimmed the earth as she leapt onto the upper cleft of the ravine, beginning the steady incline of the vast land before her. Her land. Further than most pack members would be found wondering about, so far away from their town. She pushed herself to her limit, ignoring the burn in her muscles as exhaustion crept into her limbs. She was strong—born strong. She had to be. In just three months, she would turn eighteen, the age of adulthood in her pack. Then, she would prove herself. She had trained tirelessly, breaking through the limits of her own body, only to set new ones. Eighteen. The thought sent a thrill through her. At eighteen, she would become eligible to find her mate—if the Moon Goddess willed it. She swallowed the nervous flutter in her chest. Of course, she would have a mate. She was the Alpha’s daughter. The strongest bloodline in the pack. They were descendants of the first wolves, the ones the Moon Goddess had created when she grew lonely and desired children of her own. To her beloved weres, she had gifted the sacred mating bond—a force so powerful that no one could resist it. It was her decree that each wolf find the one who completed them: body, soul, and mind. To have a mate was a werewolf’s greatest blessing. Or their greatest curse. Pain. A sudden, searing pain tore through Helena’s leg. She yelped, a sharp, agonized sound echoing through the trees. She hadn’t seen the trap until it was too late. The iron teeth sank deep into her hind leg, clamping down with merciless force. Panic surged through her veins as she twisted, clawing at the cruel device. Blood seeped into the ground beneath her. A rustling in the trees to her right snapped her attention away from her injury. Her golden eyes sharpened. A scent drifted toward her on the breeze—foreign. Dangerous. Vampire. She turned, lips curling back in a vicious snarl. The growl that ripped from her throat was meant to be a warning. Then, from the shadows, he stepped into view. Tall. Broad-shouldered. His skin, impossibly pale, stood in stark contrast to the night around him. His presence was calm, calculated. And though she, as a wolf, was more than twice his size, she knew the truth. She had seen what it took to bring down one of his kind. Strength radiated from him, coiling beneath his stillness like a predator waiting to strike. His reddish eyes locked onto hers, and the world stood still. The only sound was the hammering of her own heart. Helena was alone. Miles from her village. Trapped and injured. The enemy stood before her, the one she had been raised to hate. It was always them or us. She forced herself not to think of the warriors it had taken to bring down a single vampire in the past. She would fight until her last breath. If this was the end, then so be it. But he didn’t attack. Instead, his gaze dropped to the trap clamped around her leg. Slowly—so impossibly slowly—he raised his hands, palms open in a sign of surrender. "Easy now, darlin’," he said, his voice a deep, soothing rumble. Another warning growl erupted from Helena’s throat, her teeth bared in defiance. He smirked, amused by her bravado. "I see you’ve got yourself in a bit of trouble." Another step forward. Then another. "Let me help." Her growl deepened. "I mean you no harm, young one. I was passing through when I heard your cry. If you’ll allow it, I can set you free." His thick brows lifted slightly in question, his voice as smooth as silk. Helena studied him, uncertain. He remained still, his hands raised, his tall frame unnervingly relaxed. She hated that he looked... calm. Trustworthy. She hated that she wanted to believe him. Before she could decide, he knelt beside her. With effortless strength, he pried open the trap, freeing her leg. Helena barely had time to react. He stepped back instantly, hands still raised. She blinked at him in shock. "My name’s Cameron," he said, his gaze flickering to her injured leg. "Now, let’s get you home." Present... Looking into Cameron’s maroon eyes now, Helena felt like she was drowning. His arms wrapped around her, his scent filling her senses, his cool skin making her burn. She tangled her fingers in his copper hair, her nails scraping gently against his scalp. He groaned, forehead resting against hers. "Helena," he whispered. She tilted her head up, brushing her lips against his. A taste. Then deeper. Stronger. His passionate growl vibrated through her. A moan slipped past her lips, lost in the night air. His hands tightened on her waist, then suddenly, he stilled. "Darlin’... we can’t." His voice was thick with restraint. "Why not?" she whispered, her heart aching at the rejection. "Because, my love," he said, voice pained, "you are a wolf. And I... I am not yours." "I don't care about the bond! I love you Cameron! You!" His eyes snapped to hers in an instant. Burning red flames locked onto her fierce golden orbs. "You are a wolf Helena. And I am not yours!" He said harshly. She flinched at his words. The tears now threatening to spill over. Cameron sighed and added more softely. "I have too much respect for you to take your mate-bond away from you Helena." His hands gently cradling her delicate face. "Three weeks, and you'll be fully mature, my darling. I want you to have the life you deserve. A happy full life. Wolves don't choose their mates. If your mate can make you happier than I can, then that's what I want for you." He spat the words out, but his eyes showed his sincerity. Eyes that conveyed so much emotion. She was certain that see could see the love that she held for him mirrored in those gorgeous eyes. Passion flared inside her and she swang her leg over him, straddling him. "I can't imagine loving another soul more then I love you Cameron! Maybe you are my mate! I choose you! Vampires choose, and I can choose too!" She was desperate for him to understand how much she loved him. "I've felt it since that first day we met Cameron. I love you. I choose you!" "Please Cameron." "Please, " she begged. With a loud groan he flipped her over, resting between her legs and his forehead on hers. He brushed his knuckles over her cheek, down her neck and over the exposed tanned skin peeking out from the top of her dress. "Are you sure about this Helena?" He asked staring impossibly deeper into her soul and gently thrusting his hips forward against her heated core. "Argh" Helena moaned. "Yes Cameron, please!" Fuck. He couldn't deny her anything. She owned him. With that he captured the lips of the woman who had captured his heart. He deepened the kiss unable to restain himself any longer. There was no going back now. His hands roamed freely over her caramel skin. Their clothing disappeared one article at a time. Loud moans and ragged breathing filled the air. And whilst looking deep into each other's eyes, Cameron became one body with the alpha wolf's daughter. Ebony and ivory. Fire and ice. Living and dead. She cried out as she was filled by him, digging her nails against the smooth marble of his skin. He would fill her and love her so many times over the next few weeks. If only they'd known then that sometimes love isn't enough....Chapter OneCammy POV Present Day Cammy’s eyes fluttered open as the first light of dawn crept through the darkness, chasing away the last remnants of night. It was still too early to rise, but excitement buzzed through her veins, making sleep impossible. She curled onto her side, burying her face into her pillow, her copper hair cascading over her cheeks like a silken veil. She willed herself to stay still, to savor the last few moments of quiet before the day truly began, but it was no use. A slow, eager grin spread across her face. Her strange reddish-gold eyes gleamed with delight. She was eighteen today. Taking a deep breath, she sat up. A run would help burn off some of her nervous energy—maybe, just maybe, tonight she would find the one. As much as she had friends, she’d always kept them at a distance, unknowingly shielding her heart. But with her mate, it would be different. No more barriers. No more secrets. She longed for that deep, unbreakable bond, the kind she had
Cammy POV"So... are you nervous?" Justine asked, her voice light with amusement. She was my second cousin on Gran’s side, the daughter of Gran’s sister. "Yeah," I admitted honestly. "Don’t be." She giggled, throwing her arm around my shoulders in a casual hug. "You can just lay there and take it. The guy can do all the hard work the first time. He won’t mind, as long as he gets some!" "Justine—!" I gasped, staring at her in mortification as heat rushed to my cheeks, no doubt turning my face tomato red. The truth was, I was terrified. Terrified that I’d be bad at it—bad at everything. Even though I had secretly wished I could just get the mating bond over with, I wasn’t sure I was ready. The entire pack seemed to think I held their future in my hands, that I was destined to mate with the next Alpha. It had always been assumed. But what if I didn’t find my mate at the party tonight? Everyone would be there. That meant he had to be there. If he wasn’t… I would fail them. Fail my
Cammy POV I stared at myself in the bathroom mirror, the bright lights making my already pale skin appear nearly translucent. My dark golden eyes looked almost too large in contrast. The smoky eyeshadow I had applied so perfectly made me look almost unfamiliar. I leaned in closer, inspecting my ghostly complexion, debating whether a bit of bronzer might make me look more... alive. No. The makeup I was wearing was already more than I normally would. Besides, werewolves had sharp senses—if I painted artificial warmth onto my skin, they’d notice. I didn’t want to look like I was trying too hard. My father had always taught me to keep a closed hand, to never let my emotions show too clearly. My stomach twisted in anxious knots, but no one would ever know it. I liked keeping my emotions in check. It was one of the distinct vampire traits I had inherited, something that set me apart from the rest of the wolves. I fit in just enough not to raise suspicion. So what if I was always calm, col
Kai POV Kai stepped out of the bathroom, a towel slung low around his waist, water droplets trailing down his sculpted torso. His tattoos shifted slightly with the movement of his muscles as he ran a hand through his damp hair. "You're still here?" His voice was edged with irritation as he glanced toward the busty blonde sprawled across his bed. The disdain in his tone made her pout, rolling onto her stomach and propping her chin on her hands in what she probably thought was an innocent, tempting pose. He might have laughed if he wasn’t already regretting the last hour with her. She was a dirty little skank. "I was hoping for round two," she purred, her eyes devouring him. As if she had a right to expect anything more. He had already made her climax, despite the disappointment that set in the moment he realized her body didn’t excite him. He'd already made her cum all over his dick even though her hole was loose enough to turn him off once he'd seen it. He had still done the
Cammy POVJustine and I arrived at the hotel with Gran and Grandpa. Gran had insisted I ride with them instead of driving myself—likely hoping I wouldn’t need my car when I left. I rolled my eyes at the thought but didn’t argue. The moment we parked, a strange sensation washed over me. My lungs felt tight, though I could go hours without needing to breathe. Still, the pressure was suffocating. As soon as the car stopped, I pushed the door open and inhaled deeply, focusing on slowing my breath. Inhale. Exhale."Cams, wait up!" Justine’s voice pulled me back. I blinked, realizing I had already walked halfway to the entrance, my body moving on autopilot.I had to force myself to stop and wait as she caught up. Gran and Grandpa stood together nearby, wrapped in each other's arms as if they couldn’t bear to be apart. The sight made my chest ache. I wanted what they had.Justine finally reached me, her dark hair shimmering under the glow of the streetlamps. Her light gold eyes were accentua
Cammy POV Chapter 40: The Truth RevealedJustine. My head snapped toward her just as Nathan reached out, his fingers brushing against hers. Justine’s golden eyes were wide with shock, her lips parted as she stared at him."You're my mate?" she whispered, barely able to form the words.Nathan exhaled slowly, his jaw relaxing slightly. "Yes."A wave of emotions crashed over me—relief, excitement—for her—but also something deeper, something unfinished.Because even as I stepped back, distancing myself from the moment that wasn’t mine to claim, my wolf still stirred. And then I turned.Kai Rutherford. The moment I saw him, I knew.He had always been imposing, but right now, he was absolutely devastating. Towering over most of the guests, his presence was magnetic, his sharp jawline set with intensity, and his obsidian eyes burning straight through me. The raw energy radiating between us was nearly tangible, a force pulling me toward him. My heels wobbled on the polished marble floor, my
Kai POV The angel in my arms was intoxicating. Her scent wrapped around me—vanilla and almond—seeping into my veins like an addiction. Every breath I took was filled with her essence, grounding me in a way I hadn’t realized I needed. Liquid gold eyes and fiery copper hair. Stunning. Mesmerizing. Mine. The mate bond pulsed between us, powerful and undeniable, strengthening my wolf. And I revelled in the power surging through me. I had never felt this kind of pull before—a force that demanded I protect her, cherish her. The realization settled deep in my bones: I would never let her go. I was parched after nearly an hour of conversing with every fucking face in the room. If it weren't for the bewitching sound of her gentle voice as she graciously accepted the congratulations, I would have been fucking annoyed. But that voice. I had never heard anything like it before. So feminine. Like tranquil waters. I barely registered the swarming around us, their words blending into a monoto
Kai POV After notifying the hotel staff to collect my things from the room I'd checked into earlier and take it to the honeymoon suite, I went looking for Cameron. Knowing that I wouldn't have to find another room after smearing that blond human's scent all over the sheets was a relief. This hotel was probably booked out tonight and Cameron would question the reason for needing another room if I had to try book at another hotel. Fuck, all the top tier surrounding hotels were provably booked out tonight. I knew they would make a plan to cater to the future alpha king, but was grateful to have avoided the hassle regardless. I found her chatting to her cousin, Nate's new mate, and a few other girls from her pack. Two of whom I'm sure I'd screwed on previous visits to the Northwest. Cammy was giggling and glowing radiantly as she had been all night, either not knowing or not caring about my past discretions. Cammy. That's what everyone was calling her. Leaning on a wall, I watched my g
Cammy POV I enjoyed the walk to the club. The Blue Shadows had a beautiful territory. The late afternoon sun cast orange hues as it peeked through the trees, illuminating our path through the fallen leaves. Kai held my hand in companionable silence, as he lead me through the unfamiliar forest. I knew that he was nervous about introducing me tonight. Meeting Alpha Sigfried this morning seemed to give him an unwanted push. The push out of our pleasant little bubble that we had created, shutting the outside world out. I had no insecurities about how Kai felt when he was with me. He enjoyed me as a mate. But the uncertainty he'd felt at making official introductions stung. He was protective over me. I could feel that. But I wondered what the cause of his apprehension was. Numerous reasons filled my mind, but the two that rang most likely was scratching unpleasantly, hindering my peace of mind. Firstly, Angelique would most likely be there. I wondered how he would handle that. I was fa
Cammy's POV He sat up and swung his legs out of bed. "Okay. Let's go." "Oh, you don't have to come-" the words died on my lips at the look he shot me. He had told me yesterday to not go wondering in his territory before I had been introduced to the pack. It wasn't safe. I knew he was right. Even back in Seattle, a rogue wolf roaming in our territory was likely to lead to a hostile confrontation. Respect was of utmost importance to wolves. After Kai returned from the restroom. He walked up to me and rested his hands on my hips firmly and placed a gentle kiss on my lips. "Let's go." He nodded to the open patio doors. I turned to leave and he tapped my backside lightly as I led the way, making me giggle at his playfulness. I liked the way he took control of the physical aspect of our relationship. I had never been good with displaying affection, but I felt so comfortable with him. Natural. We shifted outside and holy moly he was huge! The largest pitch black wolf I had ever
Cammy's POV I cut the last potato into wedges and added it to the water-filled pot and placed it on the stove and turned up the heat. I went to the fridge and pulled out the package of fresh spinach and turned on the tap to rinse the vegetable before pulling the leaves off the stem and dumping half into another pot. I was cooking for us tonight. Fried potatoes, creamed spinach and steak. One of my favorite meals. I was feeling a little apprehensive. I liked my steak blue. Something my Grandmother had always hated and always tried to convince me to eat a little more well done. I think the bloodied mess reminded her that I was not a pure blooded wolf. I usually only eat steak like this in the privacy of my own home, and even then, not very often. I hated feeling ashamed about my differences and maybe a little paranoid that if I gave outsiders too many opportunities to see into my private life that they would be able to piece the puzzle together. Somehow figure out that I was a hal
Kai POV "Father-?!" She just raised her eyebrows at me and crossed her arms. "Fine." I exhaled loudly. My last line of defence crumbling. I wasn't going to loose her. "Fine, what?" She snapped. "I'll give you what you want." I hissed. "But I have my own conditions." Of course! I wasn't just going to hand her my balls on a fucking platter. Even though this whole stupid fight was for her benefit. I was just trying to help her fit in and toughen up. I had never wanted to hurt her. I never even fucking wanted Angelique now that I had Cammy. It was all expectations and power. But we'd work around this one thing if it meant so much to her. "Conditions-?" "Yeah. You've gotta satisfy all my desires." My voice sounded dark, even to myself. "Um-" she looked nervous now. I sat straight up and I raised my eyebrows at her. Hadn't she said it was her job anyway? This was fucking her idea! Why did she need to think about it? "Okay, but-" "No! No 'buts!' You've told me what you n
Kai POV "I never said anything about fucking one girl for the rest of my life, Cameron!" I said darkly, raising my own rank. Deciding to stop coddling her. It was getting us nowhere. Strong males have urges that are usually satisfied by many women. This was nothing new. Surely she understood that. "I'm fucking alpha blood! I have dark desires. Desires that I don't expect you to satisfy! For that, you will learn to be grateful. At least I am honest with you. I don't know why this is such a shock to you. Have you grown up in a fucking cave?! I don't need to ask your permission, Cameron." Mates don't physically hurt each other. But they do submit to rank, and I was laying it all on Cameron now. She should have cowered before me. I suddenly realized now how strong she is. I can feel her. But I outrank her. Fuck, I outrank even my father's Beta by my blood alone! But Cameron's gaze never wavered. Her eyes only grew darker. She had no fear and she wasn't submitting to my aura. "Thank
KPOV I heard a loud gasp behind me. I knew it was Cammy before I turned around. I could feel the sharp confusion bolting through her. "Cameron, there's someone I'd like you to meet. This is Angelique, my...girlfriend." "Angelique, this is Cameron -my mate." Cammy had practically stopped breathing. Then I felt her walls go up, instantly blocking me from feeling her. She sucked in a harsh breath while she and Angelique stared at each other. Cammy in shock. Angelique in full stare down, bitch mode. "Your-, ...um....are you two...together?" Cammy asked. "Yes" I answered, hating the hurt in her eyes. "So...are you in-in love? She stuttered. I heard snickers all around the room. Shit. Fuck no! "No" "Yes" was Angelique's marvelous answer, at the exact same time I had answered. She raised one eyebrow and glared at Cammy. I looked at Cammy to see how she would handle it. "But...um..." Cammy was at a complete loss. Looking back and forth between us. I wanted to tell her
Kai POV I led her into the 3 meter high solid wood front door with my wolf carved into it. I gave her the grand tour of the 1400 square meter, 4 bedroom home and could feel that she liked it -a fucking lot! Thank you very much! I showed her to her room before I told her that mine was just down the hall. She scrunched up her brow and got all confused when I announced her bedroom. It was my favorite in the house apart from my own. It was huge with a ensuite bathroom, private lounge and patio that opens up to the forest edge. I would be spending plenty time there in the near future. I didn't see what the problem was. Her bags were still in the car, so we made our way out to get them. "Hey, Kai!" My buddies Slade, Riley and Alec were walking a short distance away. We lived in a tight-knit community with our homes close together as was common in all werewolf communities. They changed direction and made their way over to us when they saw me. I noticed how they all had their eyes o
Kai POV Cammy was too quiet on the drive home. She had returned from her friend three hours after leaving, and I was livid. How could she think it was acceptable to leave her mate to spend time with another male—the day after bonding?! Old balls. Old balls. Old balls. I kept reminding myself. But fuck, that excuse was wearing thin. I had asked Gerald multiple times where this friend was so I could fetch Cammy myself. The old fucker had done everything in his power to distract me, dodging my questions like a damn politician. And I knew she had lied about why this guy hadn’t been at the party last night. The fact that she left her phone behind, shifting into her wolf for this visit, only fueled my rage. Was there even clothing available? Had she arrived to him naked? My hands clenched around the steering wheel. Maybe this wasn’t some old family friend—maybe this was someone she had wanted to mate. Someone she was close to. No, I could tell that she wasn't lying about that. I
Cammy POV Sprinting around the corner of my dad’s sprawling, European-style home, I shifted from my wolf into my human form. Barefoot, breathless, and moving at vampire speed, I flung open the door, rushed inside, and beelined for the closet. My hands grabbed the first thing they touched—a pale blue sundress. I pulled it on quickly, then bolted back outside toward the lake, the sound of a massive splash alerting me to his whereabouts. I slowed as I reached the water’s edge, dipping my feet in and letting the coolness soothe my overheated skin. A moment later, Dad and Clyde broke the surface, sending water spraying in all directions, drenching me in the process. I gasped as the cold hit me but didn’t mind—it was scorching hot, and after my run, the chill was welcome. Clyde, my dad’s 3,000-pound hippopotamus, floated beside him, snorting happily. He and his mate, Bonnie, had been imported from sub-Saharan Africa nearly a year ago. Unlike his more reserved counterpart, Clyde loved at
