Veronica’s POV
“This is for the best. You will be helping the pack and repenting for your mistakes at the same time,” I avoided Jade’s attempt of caressing my face. “Quit pretending to be a good stepmother. There is no audience now,” I told her. “I just wanted to comfort you, dear,” she said and I clenched my fists so that I could ignore her existence inside this closed space. We are in a covered wagon as they escort me, still chained, towards the agreed meeting place. I was told that the exchange would be held there. All I understood was that I would be a peace offering for the treaty. Long ago, Eviera was on par with the Helios pack. But our pack experienced a decline in recent years. We fell off with the Helios pack and with the power that they accumulated now, our pack cannot stand against theirs so we remain in the shadows to avoid conflict given our ugly history. It was not clear what the exact cause of the bad blood was but we were not able to patch up with them for 20 years. I tried looking outside in the dark. My abilities are still weakened because of my current health and the cuffs on me. I wanted to know where we were but it was too hard to make out without my full night vision. With a guess, it will probably be by the Grand Border that separates the territory of the Helios pack from the rest of the North. This time of the year, the melting of snow is beginning and the neutral cold is nearing. I could smell it in the air and the trees in the forest. I could feel Colton’s eyes on me ever since we started travelling in the wagon. But I never looked at him again. He makes me sick. Suddenly, my train of thoughts were interrupted by someone placing a hand on mine. It was my stepsister, Ruby. They call Ruby an angel, a soft-hearted girl. I have always been too formal and self reserved for others and we always got compared to each other. She was warm and kind and jolly. I was cold and firm and dull. I have always been aware of some pack members saying that she was more befitting of a Luna. There was a time I believed it too. There was a time where I was fooled by her kind face too. “Nica, I’m really sorry that this happened to you,” she told me softly. I harshly took my hand away, “Don’t touch me and never call me Nica again.” “Don’t talk to her like that,” Colton instantly chimed in annoyingly. “It’s okay, Cole,” Ruby answers in her screechy high soft voice. “She’s just in a bad situation right now, her emotions are valid. Please understand.” “You're too kind, Ruby.” My eyes could roll to the back of my head and never come back with how much I want to gag from her pretentious kindness. Remembering how I did believe her made my hatred feel worse with the awareness of my stupidity. Then, the wagon finally stopped. One of the Betas took a peek inside to inform us, “We have arrived, Alpha.” They started dragging me again and I watched as some of the pack members who accompanied us were in their wolf form for security. We were around ten in total. The high trees are the same as in our territory. The biggest difference, though, is the evident gold shining line that establishes the Grand Border. Then, a river could be seen from where we are before it opens to the vast forest that the Helios pack rules over. I was tuning out the entire conversation and the handshaking that occurred. There were only three figures from the Helios side and none of them were shifted. My empty feeling never went away. I have no other thoughts. I don't even know if I have a future across that borderline. Maybe a nightmare to live or a few more breaths before death. Nonetheless, I have nothing. So I was only empty from here on. Just before the actual exchange and throwing of me towards the clutches of our enemy clan, I heard Ruby asking permission to talk to me and a second after, she was just in front of me. Then, she hugged me, her back against everyone else. And she confessed her real feelings. “I finally got rid of you, sister. I have always wanted you gone Veronica,” I could feel her vicious smirk and the way her long claws pierced my shoulders under her fake hug. She added, “You used to have everything but now they are mine.” She was a fake saint. I knew that. Yet I didn't recognize the stepsister I thought of as a real one before. I had no other chance to say anything back, nor did I want to waste any more energy on these people. I just want to leave them behind even if I walk down a darker path. I was escorted by someone from Helios that I did not bother to look at. I just continued staring ahead, staring forward. I will not look back. A loud howl of the wolf from the dark forests in front of me echoed loudly. It was probably a howl for the entire continent to hear. I am not sure what for. But one thing I am certain of, as I looked ahead, I saw bloody red eyes staring at me.Veronica's POVWhat awaits me on the other side could be hell.I am not sure what to expect when they told me that I will be sacrificed and sent to the Helios pack for the treaty. So far, they have yet to kill me.At first, I thought that we would be treading the cold on foot. Or maybe just me, as a punishment or initiation but I was shocked to see that there was a carriage waiting once we crossed the river. They gestured for me to hop in so I did.“Do not look through the windows,” the gruff voice of one of the three representatives of the Helios clan told me. I still could not make out their faces because my eyes are really blurry now, my headache is becoming worse.I said no complaints and simply followed them. I am still gauging how they act, I don’t want to make a mistake and suddenly anger them. I am on thin ice.For a second, escaping crossed my mind but I knew that it would be too risky. I am not in my best condition and even if I manage to pull it off somehow, I wouldn’t know
Veronica's POVThe days passed by quickly in my new reality. It was the opposite of what I expected. It has been five days and I have recovered somehow. I am still pretty much a prisoner and I have not attempted to escape. I don't think I have the capacity yet. Besides, I have no concrete plan. I do not exactly have allies to lean on so my best option is to stay here for the meantime. Free food, free lounging. They are generous. I had a couple of clothes to change into and the food was good. You could tell that they are abundant in resources that even a prisoner like me gets a quality meal.I don’t really have anything to do around here all day. I can’t exactly roam around outside. So I sit on the bed every day. Stare at the ceiling. Get mad and try to sleep. Wake up to get mad again.A hobby I picked up, however, is eavesdropping. That sounded weird but I had no other entertainment. My heightened hearing came back on the third day and I used it right away.Their pack is loud with so
Veronica's POV It became a habit. The nameless man with red eyes kept visiting me every night from then on. “The mask is stupid,” I glared at him. “You are not a child playing superheroes.” He chuckled. God, I hate his chuckle. “I have to keep the mystery going y’know,” he tilted his head on his hand as he sat on the couch across from me. I don’t need to see past the mask to know the shitty grin he definitely has on. “Didn't know you were so interested in me. I am flattered.” His red eyes were playful and heavy. The weight of his stares could be felt through my bones, like he was staring at my soul yet I cannot read his mind. “Not all interest is a compliment,” I told him with a frown. It has been three days. At first, I tried interrogating him especially when he came back the night after I confronted him with a mask on. He was evasive and he was just dismissing my questions. I had no choice but to let it go. However, I have never stopped speculating who he is. Right now, I
Veronica’s POV Something shifted in the way they treat me. “Anything I request for?” I eyed him with furrowed brows. “Yes,” the pack Beta Eamon, as he finally introduced himself to me earlier, answered in a monotonous voice. “What if I will only eat boiled virgin rabbit soup from the Highlands of the South?” I asked. I bet he is a strict general in their pack because I watched how hard he fought back rolling his eyes. Tough guy. It was quite amusing. “Then we will procure you the boiled virgin rabbit soup from the Highlands of the South,” he answered with an evident grudge. I held back a snicker but grinned widely after successfully messing with him. This is my first genuine big smile since my life went down the drain. I don’t know what changed but I will not poke around a blessing and risk jinxing it. “I would very much like a big bowl of lasagna and a medium-rare ribeye steak with a tub of sundae of all possible ice cream flavors with lots of sprinkles, chocolate syrup and m
Veronica’s POV All eyes were on me. Even without my heightened hearing as a werewolf, I could feel the deafening silence and hear the way everyone held their breath once they realized my presence. There were no announcements. I have a new scent that all of them would pick up quite easily. Because I am an outsider. Because I don't belong here. I stuck out like a sore thumb. The towering figure of a man around 6’3 ft tall approached me. It took me a second before I recognized him. He had a buzzcut with his large body. His steps were heavy. Eamon, the pack’s Beta. The Alpha’s right hand man. He stopped in front of me, his back was on his pack and uttered, “Come follow me.” It almost echoed through the entire hall. That is how unsettling the silence was. I cannot pick up the smell of everyone but again, even without my lycan senses, the air is filled with too much tension. Eamon suddenly turned to face the awaiting crowd of his pack members. He was frowning and in a strict voice,
Veronica’s POV Time passed and Red Eyes didn’t visit for a while until tonight. I was glaring at him as he stood in front of me. I had my arms crossed over my chest. He stood tall. Probably around a ridiculous height of 6’5 ft. It was an estimate. He was wearing long sleeves that hugged his skin. It was annoying. He knows he has a good figure, broad shoulders, strong biceps, hard muscles— I cleared my throat and rolled my eyes to avoid my gaze. The lamp looks really interesting, I never noticed. And okay, let’s just say he is distracting. Annoyingly. Really annoying. Maybe because I haven't seen him in a while. “Such a warm welcome,” he jests and moves to catch my line of sight. I continued avoiding him. “Why are you here?” I asked in a harsh tone and turned my back on him. For some reason, I started fixing the pillows on the bed. Its pillowcases are creased and I was smoothing them out. He is disturbing me. “You missed me?” I flinched when I felt him standing very close behind
Sebastian’s POV Taking in a rejected Luna from an enemy pack is madness, they told me. I didn't care. “She'll be arriving at our borders today.” I ran through the forest heading to the Grand Border in my shifted wolf form. Her scent was wafting through the air even from a distance. I know she is near our territory. In reality, the scent was barely there, it’s not something that can be picked up easily but I could. After all, even compared to the heightened senses that all werewolves have, mine is more advanced than ordinary so I could pick up her scent from miles away despite the wolfsbane that should’ve hid it. For this treaty, the Helios clan actually has no obligations to meet with the Eviera pack. They are the ones who offered, who needed this. So such trivial matters do not require the Alpha as an established hierarchy between our packs. We are not on the same level. But I couldn't stay in place. She's here. From afar, across the river and under the moonlight, I saw them
Sebastian's POV “Boiled virgin rabbit soup from the Highlands of the South?” I threw my head back laughing. Veronica always keeps on surprising me. I can’t predict her antics. “She's insane,” comments Eamon. “She's lovely,” I said. He looked at me like I just grew two heads. I shook my head with a smile which weirded him out more. I am not a very smiley person by nature. I do smile, just not as easily as lately, not for the small things too. My smile is usually reserved after a good hunt or a winning duel. Yet these days, I keep smiling over mundane things. I stood up, massaging my neck and stretching, “I’d hunt one.” “What?” Eamon exclaimed in bewilderment and protest. “You know she's just messing with us, right? She even changed her request to—” “Watch your words,” I warned with a growl, glaring at him. “Sorry, Alpha,” he bowed his head in submission. “I have matters to tend to anyway,” I responded dismissively, “I’ll bring Aren with me. You told her about the pack dinner a
