17. The Stories

I woke up with the worst headache I’d ever had. It pierced my brain so strongly, I winced as I tried to open my eyes.

“Here, have this,” Braxton’s voice said through the dark in my mind.

I blinked my eyes open to see him handing me a steaming mug of something.

“It’s lavender tea, it’ll help with the headache,” he said, and I sat up, grimacing at the grogginess in my mind.

I leaned against the headboard and took the mug, sniffing it before taking a sip. The heat was soothing, the smell calming.

I sighed and put it on the wooden bedside table before looking up at Braxton in the dimly lit room, the drapes drawn, the lantern next to me the only thing giving any light.

“How long have you been talking to those shadows, Lorelai?” Braxton asked, and I blew out a breath.

“That was the first time they’ve actually talked to me, or manifested in any way other than red eyes. But I’ve been seeing those since the blood moon, the night of the offerings.” I shivered, and he listened in

    18. The WolvesI ate my breakfast, piling more fruit and pancakes onto my plate while scooping oatmeal into my mouth. I was starving and hadn’t eaten so well in, well, forever.Brax dug in as heartily as I did, while Derik ate bit by bit and Nikolai just stared.I ignored them all and concentrated on my food until I couldn’t fit anything more in. Finally finished, I sipped some water and looked up at my alphas.“So. What happens now?” I asked, and that earned me three frowns on three sexy faces. “Okay, specifics. What am I to do now that I am here, and how long am I here?” I asked.“Stay in your room,” Derik stated, and I only just refrained from rolling my eyes at the order.“You belong to us now. Your stay is indefinite,” Nikolai said, and I smiled at the answer.“Indefinite meaning I go back to the village for winter and then come back?” I asked, grinning, but it had Derik glaring at Brax.“You told her about winter?” Derik snapped, pushing his plate away and straightening his spin

I wanted to bite back, but I knew he was just looking after his kind.I was human, and I could tell my father their secrets, I could go to the vampires, or worse, the shadows. I couldn’t fault him for that, so I placed my hand on his and smiled.“I know I’m just a human and my word probably means nothing, but I care about them, Hank. I’m not going to do anything to put them in danger,” I reassured him, then turned back to the books and piled them high in my arm as Hank stepped back against the wall and guarded. The same as usual, but the air was definitely lighter so I took that as a win.I spent the next half hour taking in the information I could about the wolves I now lived with. They only need to sleep every forty-eight hours. They are always hungry but never starve. They don’t have to eat unless staying in their wolf form for longer than twenty-four hours. They need sex at least once every lunar cycle (twenty-eight days) to keep the wolf and magic at bay. That little fact had me

    19. The ThreatThe man let out a maniacal laugh and used his cheating wolf speed to cut me off at the end of the next aisle. I tried to run back— but then he wasn’t the only one there.A tall woman who looked like working out was her thing blocked the other end. She was beautiful, with flawless skin, but her teeth were sharp, her claws out, her eyes red.She had a tattoo that combined all three territories, vines wrapping around a tree and turning into a wave over it on her chest that was only covered by a crop. Her hair was dark and piled on her head, her eyes surrounded in smoky makeup that looked like the same charcoal I drew with back in the village. She was stunning but looked every bit as lethal as the guy who had a scar in his eyebrow and a lightning bolt in his buzz cut.I backed up into the side of the shelf as they cornered me, my heart racing so fast I thought it was going to break right through my ribcage and leave me behind.“Don’t come any closer. I’m here for the alphas

“I will not kneel for a human,” he spat, and Nikolai’s claws raked across the beta’s face, leaving three big gashes across his cheek, before his knee came up to his gut.Garrett dropped, hanging his head as blood dripped down his shoulder and over his torso, covering the tattoo.“You will kneel for your alpha!” Kai snarled, before looking over to Taylor. He bent before her, lifting her chin so her eyes met his. “You are nothing to me. Just another pussy that used to occupy my time.”He pinched her lips together, his eyes not leaving hers still as she steeled her gaze against him. “Don’t touch my fucking human.” He shoved her away and stood up, finally looking at me.“Lorelai,” he said, and I went to him. He curled me into him, kissing the top of my head as Taylor snarled. He glared at her, daring her to challenge him.“Is it true? She’s winter born?” she asked, looking at me.Kai laughed at that. “Who the fuck cares? Go get your shit together, pack meeting tonight,” he said, just as B

    20. The FriendThe alphas sat down in three huge throne chairs made of stone, carved in their respective symbols.I twisted my hands in front of me, not sure where to go and feeling every set of eyes on me. The entire hall was filled with wolves, and they were being rowdy until I walked in with the alphas. Now it was deadly silent.Kai pulled me onto his lap, and I looked at him instead of the faces I knew were staring.Derik kept standing as Braxton took a seat to the other side.“Stay quiet, human. Stay still,” Kai said against my ear in such a quiet voice I almost didn’t hear him.I nodded once, and he kissed me before looking up at Derik.“It’s been a while since we have gathered as largely as tonight,” Derik started. “But we have reason to. We have a human in our midst,” he said, looking to me.I didn’t know what to do but resisted the urge to wave, staying quiet and still like Kai had said.“She will remain unharmed and untouched while she is with us, do you understand?” Derik s

Not a single wolf rose to the challenge, keeping their heads bowed.Derik nodded. “Good. Now we feast,” he said, and then food was being brought through double doors at the end of the hall by younger wolves.I had read about those earlier. The initiate wolves, the ones that wanted to be part of the main pack and had to go through rigorous hazing-type things for years before they got the chance to be one of the wolves at the table.I watched as they served the alphas first. Steaming hot plates of roasts and veggies were brought out, ale and wine were served, and then the wolves descended into chaos. But a good chaos. They were loud and laughing as they chatted among themselves, roaring and fighting every now and then, but Brax reassured me that it was normal. Three fights a night at least was considered the expectation. The wolves were so much like humans, it threw me for a loop. They could blend in, be human, and the feast was like some kind of family dinner that was almost comfortabl

“Are you magic too?”I wondered if he had the shadows like Brax and me, but if he did, I couldn’t feel them.“We’re shape-shifters; all of us have magic in us. Some of us just have more than others. I happen to be a hybrid though, leaving me with a few extra goodies from my mother’s witch ancestry.”He smiled and rolled a purple ball of magic between his fingers before squashing it in his fist.“Speaking of my mother, she wants you to bring your lover to meet her. She loves the idea of seeing a true winter born. You know how she gets,” Cain said, and Derik rolled his eyes.“Your mother should be at the pack meeting,” he said, but there was a hint of a smile in his voice.“My mother would slap you if she were here, so let’s let her do it in private, yeah?See you tomorrow night at her hut for dinner. Don’t be late, or she’ll put eyeballs in your stew again. That goes for all four of you,” Cain warned, then walked away, whistling a fun tune before whispering in one of the females’ ears

I had no idea what that meant, but Brax did, his brow furrowing. “Sacrificial?”Her grin grew wider, that creepiness factor coming back. “Generations’ worth.”“You believe that is why he came here in the first place? For the dagger?” Brax guessed, and she nodded.“Get it back, please,” she asked, and he nodded, then turned to me.“We’ve got to get back,” he urged, but as he went to step, one of the little girls who had been playing came over. She tugged on Brax’s pants, and he looked down at her, smiling. He knelt down to her, and she blushed.“Can you come play?” she asked, and his smile tightened. He looked like he was considering it, which meant whatever the dagger meant was important information he needed to share. But then she smiled wide. “Please? Either you take me or I go myself, but I want to know if my family are okay.”“They are,” Brax said. “They were the first people the wolves checked on.”“So who was taken then?” I demanded.“The girl you shared a carriage with was one of the missing,” Kai explained, and that had my jaw dropping.“Portia?” I asked, my eyes wide, my heart clenching.Perfect Portia was a bitch who thrived on the hive mind of my village, but she didn’t deserve to be taken. Pretty sure once that connection was open, every single one of us combusted.” She giggled, then ran her fingers up her mate’s arm. “Thanks, Alphas, this one was the most satisfying heat yet.”She winked, her eyes meeting mine, and I knew she aimed that comment at me. “Please, Kai.”I dug my nails into Derik, whimpering as Kai moved his hips in a deeper way that had my entire body even more desperate. I wasn’t even sure how that was possible.“I need a little longer with you, Little Human, be patient,” he said in a tight voice, and I was trying, but they were so much, he was so much. It was different with the heat storming us; it added something intense to our already intense connection.I tried to hang on, tried to keep his pace, but it was painfully slow, a desperate ache settling in my core from being so wound up, and I couldn’t maintain it like Kai could.I pushed back against him, urging him faster, needing more. “More,” I begged, and Derik kissed me again, Brax brushing my hair back this time. Then Kai was slamming into me, so forceful and feral.
