Chapter 3

Keira tossed and turned all night, troubled by thoughts and visions of drunk Dawson. When Keira finally heard the birds chirping outside of her window, she crept out of her bed careful not to wake the snoring lump sleeping next to her. Keira makes it a habit to get up early before Dawson, it’s time she gets all to herself, and she would never miss an opportunity for alone time. She gets dressed and covers the fresh bruise on her neck with some makeup. She is as quiet as a mouse walking through the bedroom. Once she’s out in the hall she relaxes a bit, taking in a deep breath and letting it out. Keira wonders to herself.

‘Is this really what the rest of my life is going to look like?’ She heads down for breakfast in the main hall. Everyone greets her with hellos and good mornings. The cafeteria is mostly filled with two types at this hour of the morning. The elder member of the pack who wake up early by choice, and the warriors who have to run early morning drills, who would probably rather be asleep at this hour. Kiera takes a seat alone at a table and pulls out a book to read with her coffee. She tries to get into the book but she’s distracted. Keira is missing her best friend right now. She and Lily used to drink their coffee together every morning, it was one of her favorite rituals. Keira gets lost in the memories of her firecracker friend Lily. Lily was a walking contradiction, a face as sweet as sugar, but when she opened her mouth, nothing but spice came out. Keira knows that Lily would raise hell if she found out what was happening here. And Keira can’t even imagine what Mason would do if he found out. Reminiscing on what her old life used to be brings tears to Keira’s eyes. She hasn’t spoken with Lily or Mason in months. In fact she hasn’t spoken with anyone from her ‘old life’ in months. Keira worry’s that they must all think she’s forgotten about them. She makes a mental note to try and reach out to someone. A few hours pass, and after her coffee Keira gets herself some breakfast. She’s given up on her book, it sits in the bench next to her, in between her and a few other members of the pack who have filtered in throughout the morning. Halfway through her toast and Keira smells Dawson. She looks around and sees him make his way into the cafeteria. If the pattern is the same, he’ll feel really bad about last night and be overly affectionate and apologetic with her. He comes over and sits next to Keira. Dawson feels bad for last night, but he’s not thrilled she came down to breakfast without him. And to find her sitting with other guys ticks off his wolf.

“Morning.” Dawson says sitting down so close to Keira their thighs are touching, from the knee all the way to the hip. Dawson kisses her cheek.

“Morning.” Keira replies. Keira can feel the tension between them, but the conversation at the table helps to hide it.

‘Why didn’t you wake me up?’ Dawson mind links her.

‘You looked so peaceful. I didn’t want to ruin it.’ She replies. She has Luna training today with Luna Bethany. She wonders if she should tell her about what’s going on with Dawson. Suddenly she feels Dawson’s hand on her thigh and the tingles make her jump slightly and Dawson chuckles.

“Why so jumpy?” He asks.

“Sorry I was thinking about Luna training with your mom today.”

“How is the training going?” Dawson asks. Keira’s thoughts are put at ease. He seems genuinely interested in her training. This is the nice guy, the good Dawson. The man the she fell in love with.

“It’s going really well actually. Your mother is a great teacher.” Keira learned that praising his mother always puts him in a good mood. He smiles in agreement.

“Good. It’s only a matter of time before we take our place in this pack.” Keira knows he has his training soon, then maybe she can sneak off for a bit to make a phone call. After breakfast Dawson kisses Keira goodbye as he makes his way over to train the warriors. Keira sneaks back to her bedroom and grabs her phone. Dawson has insisted that she keep her phone in her room, and that her schedule stays filled so she doesn’t have time to call anyone. When they are alone together, Dawson doesn’t like her being on the phone. Keira takes the phone into the bathroom and locks the door. She turns the faucet on just in case. She first tries Lily, but she doesn’t answer. Then she calls Mason.

“Keira?” He answers. Hearing his voice was like breaking a dam. She misses her friend.

“Mason.” She holds back tears.

“Keira it’s been months, we’ve all been so worried about you. Are you ok?” He asks. He does sound worried.

“Not really ‘Mays’. I think I’ve gotten myself into a mess.”

“Tell me what’s going on.” He asks. Then she hears movement in the bedroom. Is Dawson done with training already? Who else would be in the room?

“Keira?” She hears Mason, but she stays quiet, listening, waiting. Then someone knocks on the door.

“Keira? Is that you in there?” It’s Luna Bethany.

“Yeah, I’ll be out in just a minute.” She shouts. So Mason can hear too.

“I have to go.” She whispers.

“Wait, Keira!” She hears Mason say but she hangs up the phone. Keira stashes her phone up under the sink and flushes the toilet. She pretend washes her hands and opens the door quickly.

“Sorry, am I late for training?” Keira asks, but she knows she’s not.

“No, I just saw you come up here and wanted to make sure you were okay.” Luna Bethany looks down at Keira’s neck. Keira knew she should have applied more makeup, but maybe, secretly, she covered her bruise badly so someone would notice it. Luna takes a step towards her and tilts Keira’s head up to get a better look.

“Damn, that won’t do.” Luna takes Keira’s hand and drags her out of the room. They go down the hall and into the Alpha’s office. The Luna practically bursts into the room.

“Bethany? Keira? What is the meaning of this?” Alpha stands up behind his desk. Luna grabs a tissue and wipes the makeup off Keira’s neck. Then the Luna presents her to the Alpha.

“This is what’s the matter.” Luna says. Keira feels embarrassed and ashamed as the Alpha makes his way around his desk to take a look. There are prominent bruises across her neck from where Dawson choked her. These bruises will only get worse. The Alpha sighs.

“Is this the first time child?” He asks her. This is the first visible bruise, but not the first time he’s hurt her.

“Yes.” Keira is holding back every emotion she has right now. She doesn’t know what to do, who to trust, or what to say.

“We will take care of this.” The Alpha says sternly. Is he really going to fix it? The Luna puts her hands on Keira’s shoulders and leads her back out of the room.

“Why don’t you take the day off from training. Go lay down. Let us handle this.” Luna coos at Keira to calm her. Keira just nods in agreement. The Luna goes back into the Alpha’s office and closes the door. Keira can hear shouting from behind the door, but she is too emotional to make it all out. Suddenly Dawson and Harrison come running into the pack house door. Dawsons eyes land on her and then her throat. Harrison does the same. Both have completely different reactions to seeing her and the bruise. Keira doesn’t have the energy to face them so she hurries to her room and Dawson tries to intersect her. She rushes as quickly as she can until she feels a firm hand on her arm.

I get dressed and dry my hair, then I head down to the dinning hall and find Sam and Cleo, two warrior friends I’ve made here.“Hey Luna.” Everyone calls me Luna now, it feels weird because they have a Luna.“Hey. Keira’s POVOver the next few weeks things went back to normal around the pack house, and between me and Dawson. He stopped drinking like he said, and things have been like they were in the beginning, blissful. Two days ago he was sent out on a mission to help an allied pack. He is returning today after successfully fighting back some rogues. I’m happy he had a successful mission without getting hurt. He and the other warriors are planning to arrive back around dinner time, so the pack is planning a big feast. The Luna and I worked together to plan the feast. This is the first event I’ve had a hand in planning, and I’m really excited for it. “Alright, I think that just about finishes that. It’s up to the kitchen staff now to have it all ready for tonight.” Luna Bethany says. “I’m looking forward to it.” I tell her.“We only have an hour before Dawson arrives, why don’t you run up and get ready.” She says.“Thanks Luna, I’ll see you later.” I head up stairs

How are you feeling?” She asks.“Like crap.” I say. “Could I have some water?” I ask her. She nods her head and leaves for just a minute before coming back with a yellow cup and a straw. She positions the straw to my lips. I sip a few big gulps, quenching my thirst. After I’m satisfied I clear my throat. “What happened?” I ask Macie. Theo’s POVI’m in a tent meeting with my allied Alpha’s when Grace steps in. “Alpha Theo,” she nods to me then to the other Alphas, showing her respect for our positions. “Forget the formalities Grace. It’s not necessary.” I say. “What’s the news.” “Sir, Pale Moon is awake, our spies say it’s just a matter of waiting for their Alpha to give them the word.” Pale Moon Pack arrived a few miles outside of our borders late last night, before stopping to make camp and rest. A few of my men wanted to attack then, to have the element of surprise on our side, but I refused. There were still some of our women and children who hadn’t evacuated yet, I didn’t want to risk any lives unnecessarily. Our strategy in this battle is mostly defensive. “Get the warriors lined up and ready, I want my men on the left and right sides, intermixed with the allied forces. We’re going to funnel them forward, and hope that our endurance will out last theirs.“Dawson’s POV“Alpha, we should be coming up on t

Keira’s POVWe arrive outside of Pale Moon pack’s territory, and I feel a mix of emotions. This is my first time returning to the pack that I thought was going to be my home for the rest of my life. The last time I was here I had just stabbed Dawson and ran away ready to spend the rest of my life in hiding, as an omega. Now I’m back, and I’m going to liberate this pack and everyone in it from that piece of shit I used to call ‘mate’.“Have we received any word on the Pale Moon warriors returning?” I ask Shepard.“No, no one has said anything.” I can tell he’s anxious about his pack. Cedar Creek is facing a large army without their beta, if Dawson attacks it’s going to really do some damage to their men. I reach out and grab his hand.“I’m sure they’ll be alright. Theo has support, and you said it yourself He knows how to strategize.” I say, squeezing his hand for comfort.“Keira, it looks like we’ll have to seize Pale Moon.” Fafnir says. He’s right. We haven’t heard back from Dawson

I respond with only my face, saying that yes, I’m fine.My mother and I have always been able to communicate with one another without using words. It’s something special between us that I’ve always treasured. I follow behind Shepard as we make our way over to the refreshments. Shepard get us both a glass of champagne. I take a big swig as he and I mingle around. No one at the party asks about Shepard and I. Which is good because I wouldn’t even know how to answer them. I’m not entirely sure what to do about this whole Shepard situation. It’s too early for us to make anything official by going public, but I’m definitely not going to hide it either. Shepard deserves better than that. I finish my champagne and grab myself

But it’s never been anything more than that. Ugh, like I didn’t have enough to think about.” Of course this has to happen now.“We should head back.” Shepard says. He starts walking back but I don’t want to follow him. When he realizes I’m standing still he turns to me. “I really don’t want to go back in there.” I say, whining. Shepard laughs. “You’re going to have to face it at some point, you may as well get it over with.” He says. I sigh. “Do you think my father’s right? I mean, now that I’ve calmed down, I can see how it could be perceived that I ran away from my fated mate to be with you.” I say. Of course it’s not true, but not everyone k

Shepard and I together.. the prospect of our future happiness brightens my smile to a laugh. Then I yawn and stretch, placing my feet on the cold wooden floor. I gaze around the creaky old cabin, when I realize for the first time that I’m alone. “Shepard?” I call his name, although I already know I’ll receive no response. This cabin is only one room, and I’m the only one in it. I wonder where he could’ve gone? I get up and see my clothes all neatly folded in a stack on the dining table. I chuckle again at this kind gesture from Shepard, and I take it as a sign that he just wanted to let me sleep in. I get dressed and make my way over to the pack house for breakfast. I walk into the cafeteria, and scan the room for Shepard, but I still don’t see him anywhere. “Good morning Keira.” I look o

They share a few looks, technically this is my mother’s office but Mason is the acting alpha which is higher rank. A messenger walks in and bows. “What is it?” Alpha Mason asks. “A member of the werewolf council is here Alpha.” He says.“The werewolf council?” My mother says. “Oh yes, Alpha Theo said he was going to the werewolf council to tell them about Dawson’s crimes.” I say, “They must be here in regards to those claims.” Shepard adds. “Then let’s go see what he has to say about it all.” My father says. I walk over and take it from her. I start to read it and I’m shocked. Dawson killed Alpha Thorin in a challenge. I can’t believe it. My hand covers my mouth in shock. I feel a hand rubbing my back, it’s Shepard. The letter also says that Mason and Lily have been found and that Mason has taken on the role as Alpha now. They are headed back home and the don’t think they are being pursued by Pale Moon pack. At the end it says the
