'How did we get here? Sitting across from one another in a diner?' I wondered. 'And why was the room so… hot?'

"Are you uncomfortable?" Callan asked.

I stopped pulling at the neck of my shirt and straightened up in my seat. I didn't want him to see me at any level of weakness. "I'm just a bit warm," I said.

He eyed me and then glanced outside, probably wondering how I could be warm in the middle of September this far north.

"This is the only place that's still open that's close to the office," he said, lifting the diner's menu to his nose.

"It's fine. I needed a break anyway," I said, trying to remain professional. "Thanks for offering to give me a reprieve."

Never showing the slightest bit of a smile or hint of lightness in his eyes, he nodded and set the menu down. Feeling a bit awkward, I lifted the paper up to cover my face—well, mostly to keep my eyes from wandering to his face. Up until this moment, I had been too angry. I didn't even want to look at him, but this situation had me curious.

The waitress came to take our orders.

I never expected Callan Arison, the man who wore designer suits and watches and who ran SoulMode with what other people rumored as 'no soul at all' to order a double stack of strawberry pancakes with whipped cream on top.

That seemed more like a Rooftop Guy thing.

We lapsed into an uncomfortable silence. Well, uncomfortable for me. Callan took out his phone and began typing away.

"So, uh, I heard you were in Forbes' 40 Under 40 this year. Congrats," I said, trying to break the ice.

Callan glanced up from his phone and nodded. "Thanks," he said, then promptly went back to his phone.

'What even is this?' I asked myself in my head. Why was I in a twenty-four-hour diner with my new boss/one-night stand partner? And why did he ask me out to dinner if he was going to be on his phone the whole time? It was a little disrespectful.

I sighed, trying hard to keep my cool. Now I was starting to feel like the ultimate fool. To think, I'd actually started to give him the benefit of the doubt that Rooftop Guy really was in there somewhere....

"How long are you staying at the office?" he asked suddenly.

I flinched, not expecting him to say anything else. "I'm not sure. I have a lot of work to do before tomorrow."

Part of me hoped that he would realize I was talking about the work he'd just given me earlier that day.

"Right, well, I'll be heading home after this, but I'll let Carl at the front desk know that you're coming back so he's not surprised when someone comes up so late," he said flatly.

Wow. It was so painfully obvious that he had absolutely no interest in me at all–professionally or otherwise.

I stared at him in muted disbelief. Then I mentally slapped myself and told myself to get over it. Whatever image I'd concocted of him from that night was so far off from his real identity. And besides, he was my boss now.... Even if he was the cute and quirky Rooftop Guy, I wouldn't be able to date him.

Not that anything other than his sharp nose, muscular frame, and full lips were appealing anyway....

**Callan

Jeffery's pen had been click-click-clicking for the last five minutes, and it was about to drive me insane. How many times a day did I have to remind him how annoying that was?

"Do I need to get you a fidget spinner or are you purposefully trying to make me haywire with all your damn clicking?" I grumbled at him.

He stopped clicking his pen and slung one leg over the other, tucking his hand between his thighs to trap his mindless fingers. "What happened to your good mood?" he asked sassily.

I sneered. What good mood? This whole week had been a disaster.

"I might be in a better mood if we could make our clients happy," I said. "However, we're one step closer to losing Vida, and now I've got to worry about who to entrust with this new client even though everyone is barely keeping up with who we already have."

"Maybe we need a morale booster," he suggested.

"Can't people find a way to boost their own morale?" I groaned.

Jeffery hopped up from his seat and came over to my desk. "They can't when they're scared of their boss."

This again? I just didn't get it. I didn't think I was scary at all. As I'd said before, there was a difference between tough and mean. I was tough.

"Callan," Jeffery said, crossing his arms.

Oh, no. This was the serious Jeffery, not the one who was unprofessional and brother-like at work. He only called me by my first name when he meant what he was about to say.

"It's been almost a year. Truthfully, you're doing great, especially considering the shape of things when you took over. You were twenty-nine in the 40 Under 40 list, for God's sake. Nobody thinks you're failing—"

"I know I'm not failing," I interrupted. "I just want things to be different, to be better."

Jeffery stared sidelong at me, frowning. "I understand, but think about your grandmother, think about what she did with this place. She was so close to her employees, but you're only getting close enough to them to scare them into letting you put a collar around their necks."

"Oh, c'mon," I said, rolling my eyes. "I'm not THAT bad."

I knew about the talk about my cold demeanor, but I didn't care as long as people did their work. I really didn't care about my own image as long as the business was doing well, but Jeffrey had been on my back, whispering in my ear that my image and the company's image were one and the same.

"Anyway," I said, desperately not wanting to have this conversation again. "I need to figure out what to do about Gabriella Luca. Who can I entrust her to when she's going to be such an important client?"

"The new girl has been shredding everything you give her the last three weeks. Maybe she really is built for this," Jeffery said.

Isa. Isa Loveless.

A week ago, I sat with her in a twenty-four-hour diner too nervous to say anything. At work, it was easy to talk to her, but as soon as we left the building, it felt like she was someone else.

On top of that, I hadn't even intended on asking her out to dinner, let alone having her accept the sudden request. I threw myself into the hole with that one.

But Jeffery was right so far. She completed every task I threw at her, and she did them well. Any mistakes she made she never made twice.

"Isn't it still too soon? Maybe I should just check with David. He'll be back from Shanghai soon. I'm sure he'd be up for it, and I trust him," I said.

"But he's not supposed to be back until mid-October. That's still three weeks away."

I huffed. Maybe I was overthinking it.

"I guess I can give Isa Gabriella Luca's account, but I want everything to go through me before it's finalized. Let's make sure she understands that this is an important client and she still has to prove her capabilities before I let her run wild with it. She might be the head of the department, but David has been her for years. I know she can handle overseeing the rest of her department, but before I just let her run with something, I need to be sure. I want to be there every step of the way to double—no, triple-check her work," I said.

Jeffery raised an eyebrow. "Should I have her come here?"

**Isa

I'd finally started settling back into reality when Callan Arison called me into his office and sent me tumbling backward a few steps.

Not only had he just told me he was already giving me my first direct client, premier jewelry designer Gabriella Luca, but he'd delivered the news with a challenging gleam in his eye. It reminded me of the look he'd given me before he dragged me up the fire escape that night—the look he'd given me right before he kissed me and slid his hand up my top.

My face heated up, and I clenched my hands into painful fists. This was no time to regress, especially not when he'd done absolutely nothing to earn the blush on my cheeks.

Well, hopefully he'd just read it as excitement.

"Thank you so much, sir," I said with a polite nod.

He scoffed, a shadow of a laugh. "Please don't call me sir."

"Mr. Arison, really, I won't let you down with this, I promise," I said confidently. This was really it. This was my time to shine.

He nodded and sent me off with Gabriella Luca's file to study. I would have my first consultation with her in a week.

"My, my, my," Jonas, the office gossip, hummed as I exited Mr. Arison's office. "What's all that red doing on your face?"

I swiped a stray strand of my bangs off behind my ear and righted myself. Professionals were confident, not cocky. They were poised, not impassive.

"Oh, I just got my first direct client," I said with a self-assured smile. "I was just excited. I didn't expect this to happen so soon."

Jonas harrumphed and gave me a half-assed half smile. "That's great. Sounds like the boss is really into you."

Something about his face and his choice of words felt off, but I wasn't going to let his jealousy ruin the moment.

"Yeah, it'll be a tough project, but I'm excited for it. I'll be getting the team together soon for a meeting." I tapped his shoulder with the Luca file. "If the project goes well, maybe I can put in a good word to the boss."

Jonas shifted, his eyes lightening. "Oh, I'm sure," he said. "Seems like you have more influence over the boss than I do…"

To that, I replied, "Well, I am the head of the department."

"Yeah, but you're also the new girl," he said with a challenging shrug.

I gave him a stern look, and he turned around and walked away.

I might be the new girl, but that wasn't all I was....

**Callan"Bro, how many times do I have to tell you that I'm the driver?" Roman said, booting me over into the passenger side of the golf cart.Roman was pretty much my best friend. We were cousins who grew up together on the same street, and we even went to the same college. Some people joked that we were soulmates, two halves of the same person. It actually made a lot of sense, considering how opposite we were and how well we got along despite that. And as far as I knew, even soulmates could irritate you. I let him push me over since I didn't have the stamina to fight him all day. I'd had a terrible night's sleep because I kept waking up from the same dream of the girl on the fire escape. Every time I closed my eyes, we were kissing, we were looking up at the stars, we were swinging our legs off the side of the fire escape. This little dream was beginning to feel less like a dream and more like a curse. Her face was fuzzy, or maybe I just wasn't able to recall her upo

**IsaTaking on the Luca Project was exciting. Being entrusted to lead my team and oversee an important client such as Gabriella gave me a real sense of purpose. If I kept making moves forward, I could forget about Thomas and losing my company. But it wouldn't be enough just to do well; I had to be better. Callan Arison was expecting me to fail. So obviously, I couldn't. I heard the rustle of footsteps and suit pants pass by my door and instinctively looked up from my bright computer screen. I watched as Callan and his assistant passed by. That was, until Callan glanced over at me.My chest pounded suddenly, and I ducked behind my computer. Just as quickly as I ducked away, I realized there was no reason for me to hide. I straightened back up in my seat just to feel my stomach sink with disappointment when he immediately turned his head away. I glared towards the sound of his disappearing footsteps and rolled my eyes at myself. Here I was being ridiculous again. H

**CallanMy eyes fell on her as soon as we walked into the bar. I had nearly forgotten that the Luca team had invited me out for drinks until Roman called me up and asked me to go out. I wasn't planning on drinking with them, but having Roman by my side gave me a good excuse to be able to leave early or hang around longer, depending on what I needed him for. "Hey," Roman piped up. He elbowed me in the arm and nodded his head towards the table. "Does that one girl look familiar? The one with the long brown hair and nice rac—"I elbowed him back. "Don't talk about my employees like that," I grunted. Roman guffawed. But I could tell by the smirk on his face that he already knew the answer to the question. The team spotted us and waved us over to the table, pulling out a couple of chairs at the ends for us to sit in. "Boss!" Gary, the legal guy, called out. "You decided to come after all!"I forced a smile and nodded. Though I tried not to be obvious

**Isa"... So then Pam said, 'I won't have those kinds of shenanigans in my office!'" David chuckled.Out of the corner of my eye, I thought I saw a flash of two people I recognized, one of them being Callan. I looked up, locking eyes with him. His eyes flashed at me as though he were angry, then he turned with Jeffery and walked away. I briefly wondered why I felt so flustered, as though I were betraying a lover, but then decided to let it go. I was enjoying David's story, after all."What happened to Stanley?" I asked, engrossed."He ended up quitting. I think another co-worker put ghost peppers in his sandwich, so when Stanley went to steal it, he turned almost purple," David said."Well, serves him right for stealing other people's lunches," I decided.David nodded. "So, how have things been going for you? I think Callan is impressed with your performance."As we walked to the elevator, I reflected on how easy things were with David. He was funny, witty, and always

  • Not Just Another New Girl   Chapter 10 : Rumor Has It

**IsaFor a man who low-key warned me to be professional at work, Callan was sure looking like a hypocrite. Every day it was something new, some problem, some miscommunication, some expectation that wasn't met. As it turned out, I had to pride myself on not murdering my boss for over a week. Everything I did, every report I turned in, every presentation I gave, EVERYTHING had "room for improvement."Of course, as a businesswoman, I knew that everything DOES have room for improvement. But, occasionally, a person likes to hear they did a good job."What, what is it THIS time?!" I finally snapped as I walked back into Callan's office at Jeffery's bidding. Callan's office was becoming my second home. Pretty soon, I was going to pitch a tent in the conversation corner.Callan raised an eyebrow at me."Sir?" I added tersely."Better, but still insubordinate," Callan intoned, looking back down at the leather-bound folder in his hands. He was standing with his suit jacket draped

**Isa"Check this again. You shouldn't be missing this kind of stuff during reviews."That's what the sticky note on my pile of paperwork said when I got to my office Monday morning, a few weeks after the incident where I'd drank way too much out at the bar with my coworkers. I huffed at the little green piece of paper and wondered how long it had been waiting for me. Did this man ever go home?I picked up the papers and looked them over to find red ink circling a few places where the numbers on the report didn't match up. I wouldn't have missed this, I thought. Looking closer at the document, I quickly realized that this paper hadn't passed through my hands until now. Yet, I was the one being blamed for this mistake. How annoying. Clearly, it was time to have a chat with my team about how this was supposed to work. They shouldn't be handing things off to Callan without me seeing them first. But right now, there was someone else I wanted to speak with.I

**CallanI could no longer tell what Isa was thinking. Of course, I hadn't intended to scold her nor ask her out on a business date, yet here I was. I'm sure she was more thrown than I was. She had really been doing some weird things to me and my mind, especially since I had been able to recall who exactly she was.The problem was that I didn't think she remembered me at all, and I wasn't sure what to do now. Not only that, but my attraction to her had twisted my usual habit of finding people's strengths and critiqing them until they do better, and instead, it caused me to start looking like I was picking on her. That wasn't the case at all. Yes, I did point out some flaws in her work, and I did leave her annoying sticky notes, but it was never my intention to make her feel like I was pointing her out in a crowd and trying to make her look bad.I looked at her, silently hating myself for being too much myself.... How was it that she was able to both activat

My mind wasn't anywhere in particular, but something in there told me to get back to reality. As soon as I looked up, Callan was walking by with Jeffery chatting away at his side. He turned his head to see me standing by the copy machine, and he smiled effortlessly. It was a small twist of the lips that was neither flirty nor professional.Perhaps I wasn't fully out of my dazed moment, but I couldn't even process our wordless exchange until he had gone by and disappeared down the hall. Instead of making my heart race or my blood boil like he had been doing the past few weeks, this time I felt a bit… sad. No. I think I felt guilty. **IsaRather than being exhausted when we got back home from Portland, I felt lighter. I had been amazed by Callan this weekend. He got along so well with my friends, he handled my father with silent and stern strength and composure, and even if my mom didn't say anything, I thought he might have had a positive effect on her too. I was really starting to feel like things were going to be okay now.Callan was so much more than I thought from the first night I met him. But my first impression of him was right: he was special. I was glad that my feelings lingered as long as they did, and that, when he finally came around to remembering me, we found a way to become part of each other's lives. Yeah, for too long I'd let myself get knocked around by the fear of what other people would think of me, but now, especially after the weekend, I really felt Callan's love. I hadn't talked much about my dad with Callan, and I never told him about the last time I met with my father or his demand to give me the inheritance money. But I guessed learning what kind of guy he had been during my childhood was enough to make Callan dislike him. "He didn't say what was wrong exactly, but he said it's urgent, and that he needs to speak with me in person as soon as possible. He even… mentioned that my mom is with him and that they want to have a family discussion," I said. I felt like I was in a daze. If my mom was involved, it must be something serious. That thought scared me.Callan patted my hand. "Should we go? I can go with, if that's okay."As much as I didn't want Callan to have to meet my father, I was more afraid of another scene breaking out between us. If Callan was there, I knew I'd feel safer, and perhaps my dad wouldn'

**IsaEven if I didn't exactly get Tevin's blessing, it was still worth it to go to Alyssa's birthday party. By the end of that day, Alyssa and I felt like sisters, and Veronica felt like my aunt, too.I even got to talk with Veronica's husband for a while, as well as a couple of Callan's cousins. Roman showed up at the end, and we were able to get fairly acquainted. To be honest, I was on a high after that weekend. A happy high.Even the continued whispers at work weren't enough to bring me down. Yes, it was discouraging to hear people say that I was using Callan, or even that he was being irresponsible by dating someone who worked under him, but I really took Veronica's advice to heart. She had told me that people wouldn't understand or come to accept our relationship if we kept trying to hide it. I glanced at Isa, who looked both surprised and nervous. She was watching Alyssa skip towards us wearing a big smile like Alyssa was taking a jaunt down the yellow brick road. "Isa," I asked, "are you sure you're okay with this? If it's too much then—""No. No, it's fine," she replied with a small grin. "It'll be a good chance for me to get to know your sister. **IsaI wondered if it was really okay for me to go to Callan's sister's birthday party as his girlfriend when I hadn't yet met any of his other family members. The only one I'd seen was his father, and last I knew, he didn't seem to be a big fan of mine. "Won't your dad be upset that I'm here?" I asked when Callan opened up the passenger side door for me to get out of his car. Callan helped steady me on the grass as I was wearing my new purple Gucci heels. "I've talked to him," he said. "He won't make you feel uncomfortable. I have his word."I intertwined my fingers with Callan's and let him lead me up to his family's house. It still felt too soon to be meeting his whole family at once. "And what about everyone else?" I asked as we neared the house. My whole chest was vibrating with my anxious heart. Callan stopped me and spun me gently to face him. He placed his hands on my hips and planted a little kiss on my lips. "They're gonna love you, I'm sure

**IsaI hung up the phone and headed to the printer to grab the new documents that had just been sent to me for another client SoulMode had picked up. Earlier that morning, Callan and I had filled out the HR paperwork signifying that we were beginning a serious relationship, but that we would remain professional in the workplace, and there would be no favoritism played between us. It was a strange thing to do, I thought. It was as if we had to get permission from his place of work. But on the other hand, I felt a great sense of relief. Since the documents were so official, it felt like I would have a good defense if anyone asked me about our relationship. On my way to the printer, I watched everyone out of the corner of my eye to see if any news about Callan and I had been leaked yet. Considering all of the rumors I'd heard about him when I first got here about him being a playboy and having had something to do with the last few people who worked here, I assumed

It touched my heart that he had been planning this for a long time, but it also made me feel kind of guilty. I thought perhaps if I let him do whatever he wanted today I'd be able to pay him back for making him wait so long. "You're taking me shopping?" I asked. "Are you sure that's your idea of a date?"He nodded and shrugged. "I know people might hate it when people with money say things like this, but I just want to spend some money on you," he said.I laughed out loud. He rested his hand gently on my thigh and looked up at me. "I mean it this time," I said. Seeing how upset he had been before, and realizing that I had been way too wishy washy with him, I wanted to show him that I really did care about him and that I wanted to take our relationship seriously. "It seems like you should have done this a lot sooner, and maybe then it would have saved you from some of this trouble," I said, glancing at the newspaper. My chest was so tight, I wasn't even sure if I was breathing unless I made the audible sound. And my stomach ached and pinged with reminders that I was supposed to be laying off of stressful endeavors. But this seemed unavoidable. And frankly, I was curious. This man who my mother and I had managed to escape over ten years ago was there on the other side of a dingy diner window waiting for me to meet him. The man who'd caused me and my mother so much trauma, he was here. I hadn't seen a picture of my dad, let alone seen his face in person, since my mom and I got away, but I recognized him in an instant. He was a little rougher around the edges, dressed in a ratty bomber-style jacket with patches and with oily ringlets of hair hanging over his forehead. I took a deep breath and entered the diner. It was small with worn leather barstools and booth
