**Callan

My eyes fell on her as soon as we walked into the bar. I had nearly forgotten that the Luca team had invited me out for drinks until Roman called me up and asked me to go out. I wasn't planning on drinking with them, but having Roman by my side gave me a good excuse to be able to leave early or hang around longer, depending on what I needed him for.

"Hey," Roman piped up. He elbowed me in the arm and nodded his head towards the table. "Does that one girl look familiar? The one with the long brown hair and nice rac—"

I elbowed him back. "Don't talk about my employees like that," I grunted.

Roman guffawed. But I could tell by the smirk on his face that he already knew the answer to the question.

The team spotted us and waved us over to the table, pulling out a couple of chairs at the ends for us to sit in.

"Boss!" Gary, the legal guy, called out. "You decided to come after all!"

I forced a smile and nodded. Though I tried not to be obvious about it, I was all too aware of Isa sitting there sandwiched between Myalin and David, who had his arm draped around the back of her chair.

Isa was staring down at the table, her hair hanging loosely in front of her face.

For a while, I'd wondered why she never seemed to want to look at me, but after I remembered that night it all made sense.

She knew me. She had to.

"She's being a little obvious, don't you think?" Roman leaned over and whispered in my ear.

I nudged him away. "This is my cousin Roman, everyone."

Everybody smiled and waved to welcome him. Even Isa glanced up for a moment to nod at him. Still, she was sure to avert her gaze from me.

"We were just talking about office romances," Tiffany said with a mild slur. I guessed I wasn't the only lightweight here.

My chest lurched. Office romance? Then… could that be why she didn't want to look at me?

I glanced nervously around the table, trying to understand the situation.

Jonas shot Tiffany a sharp look and then grinned innocently at me. "It's not that… We just… you know… there's always someone crushing on someone else."

I gave a half-smile and poured myself a glass of the wine that was sitting on the table. "Go on. Talk away," I said. "Just pretend for the evening that I'm not your boss. Besides, Candance is the only person who cares about that kind of thing, since she's the Director of HR."

Roman chuckled. "So, who's got sparks between them?" he asked, leaning playfully against the table. He glanced around. "You can tell me. I don't work there, anyway, and I'm way cooler than this walking, talking Armani suit over here."

I took a sip of the wine. Sour, dry.

"Is it you two?" Roman asked, pointing at Isa and David.

I camouflaged my shock with another sip of sour wine. But I saw her flinch, sit up straight in her chair, eyes wide and worried before she narrowed them.

"I don't get involved with co-workers," she stated matter-of-factly.

The pitter patter of my heart slowed as I soaked in her words. Maybe that was why she was being so standoffish with me.

David laughed and removed his arm. "I just met her this week. It takes longer than a few days to become a couple."

So he wasn't denying it. Maybe he'd already started to develop an infatuation with her. By the way he looked at her out of the corner of his eye, it seemed that was likely the truth.

"So what are you going to do about this situation?" Roman whispered.

I eyed Isa who finally met my gaze. Her look was intense and pointed, and it made my heart come alive again.

What would I do… that was the question indeed…

***

"Damn, it's already almost ten," I groaned to myself.

Jeffery had taken off from the office long ago and left me to focus on my work. Paperwork was the theme of my life, it seemed, but it kept things going.

I took a break to stroll through the empty office and call for fast food delivery.

Passing through the hallways, it was tempting not to stop and take a closer look at Isa's office. I glanced at the nameplate on her closed door. Her name was pretty… Isa. I wondered what it meant.

No, I wondered what she thought of me. I thought back on the last few weeks, especially since the night at the bar with the Luca team. Isa had been particularly detached from me, which was really rubbing me the wrong way.

Then again, she was probably feeling much the same way if she really remembered me from the beginning. I was walking around, clueless for so long with her hanging out right under my nose. Even my dreams had been trying to make me remember.

As I made it to the first floor where I met the delivery guy, I scoffed at myself. I was such an idiot. Despite the alcohol in my system before and after meeting her, I should have done a better job at remembering.

But what was I to do now? She was basically my subordinate, though I liked to think that each Chief position was equal around here. And it seemed I'd made a negative impression on her.

What were the chances that she was still thinking about me, about that night?

A flash of heat shot through me as I recalled the way she felt under my lips, under my hands.

I tipped the delivery guy generously and took the stairs back up to my office. I needed to tire myself out to keep my mind on track.

It wasn't easy to keep my thoughts on the subject of work, however.

When I reviewed Isa's latest file on Luca's budget, I was almost happy to see that she had made a mistake. It was a rookie mistake, one that would be easy to fix, but the important thing was that it would give me an excuse to get her into my office the next day.

***

"Callan, good morning," Jeffery greeted me. "Don't forget that the first thing on your schedule for today is to call your father. Your goal is a ten-minute conversation this time."

Ugh. Why did I ask him to do this kind of thing first thing in the morning?

I nodded and rubbed the tiredness from my eyes. The morning drizzle was trying to lull me back to sleep after a sleepless night.

"Rough night, sir?" Jeffery asked.

I shrugged. "No rougher than usual."

He frowned at me. "You should really take it easy, even just for a few days. Take a three-day weekend or something. Or, better yet, just get off work before midnight like everyone else."

I gave him a sidelong glance. This was the same discussion he always tried to have with me. He didn't seem to understand that everyone expected me to put in the extra work as the CEO, especially my father.

"You know, even your dad—"

"No," I stopped him. Jeffery had been my dad's assistant for five years before I took over as CEO, so I often heard about the differences between us. "I don't want to hear about that right now. Just… let me get some coffee. And I want to see Isa right away. I found a mis—"

Speak of the devil and she shall appear.

As Jeffery and I pushed through the cafe door, I saw Isa standing at the pick-up counter with David right on her elbow. Their shoulders were shaking with laughter, and Isa was touching David's forearm lightly.

Nobody was supposed to be that cheerful this early in the morning.

David's eyes crinkled happily as he gazed down adoringly at her. My stomach balled up in a fist.

Really, David had just gotten back only a week ago, and already he'd sunk his teeth into her. Not that I blamed him. She was a beautiful, intelligent woman. However, since I'd realized that my dreams were not just dreams, I'd been thinking about making some kind of move myself. I didn't like David standing in my way.

"Is it just me or have those two been awfully chummy lately?" I muttered.

Jeffery followed my line of sight. "What do you mean?" he asked. "Is there a problem?"

I adjusted my suit jacket on my shoulders. "No, no. I just… don't want any of my employees to be distracted at work. You know, office romances and all."

Jeffery cocked his head and raised an eyebrow. "Since when have you cared about the employees' love lives?"

I halted. "Actually, I think I'll just get coffee from the break room. I don't want to wait in line," I said, swiftly turning on my heels and heading towards the elevator. "Oh, and about that upcoming international trip, make sure everything is arranged. Each traveler needs to sign the consent forms I emailed out on Monday."

"Callan," Jeffery called from behind me. He stepped into the elevator right behind me and huffed. I could tell by his labored breathing that he was irritated with me. He hated it when I dodged his questions, no matter how insignificant they were. "What about Ms. Loveless's work? Do you want me to reschedule—"

"No, I'll see her right away. In fact, why don't you go get her now," I said, just as the doors closed.

Jeffery narrowed his eyes. "You couldn't have said that four seconds sooner?"

I shrugged.

"If you don't mind, sir, I'll just meet her at her desk and bring her up, along with your coffee."

"Sounds good," I said, clasping my hands together in front of me. I clenched them tightly as if I could wring out the picture of David and Isa standing together and laughing.

Although a part of me argued it was none of my business, a possessive imp in me argued it was entirely my business who made Isa Loveless laugh.

Especially if it wasn't me.

**Isa"... So then Pam said, 'I won't have those kinds of shenanigans in my office!'" David chuckled.Out of the corner of my eye, I thought I saw a flash of two people I recognized, one of them being Callan. I looked up, locking eyes with him. His eyes flashed at me as though he were angry, then he turned with Jeffery and walked away. I briefly wondered why I felt so flustered, as though I were betraying a lover, but then decided to let it go. I was enjoying David's story, after all."What happened to Stanley?" I asked, engrossed."He ended up quitting. I think another co-worker put ghost peppers in his sandwich, so when Stanley went to steal it, he turned almost purple," David said."Well, serves him right for stealing other people's lunches," I decided.David nodded. "So, how have things been going for you? I think Callan is impressed with your performance."As we walked to the elevator, I reflected on how easy things were with David. He was funny, witty, and always

**IsaFor a man who low-key warned me to be professional at work, Callan was sure looking like a hypocrite. Every day it was something new, some problem, some miscommunication, some expectation that wasn't met. As it turned out, I had to pride myself on not murdering my boss for over a week. Everything I did, every report I turned in, every presentation I gave, EVERYTHING had "room for improvement."Of course, as a businesswoman, I knew that everything DOES have room for improvement. But, occasionally, a person likes to hear they did a good job."What, what is it THIS time?!" I finally snapped as I walked back into Callan's office at Jeffery's bidding. Callan's office was becoming my second home. Pretty soon, I was going to pitch a tent in the conversation corner.Callan raised an eyebrow at me."Sir?" I added tersely."Better, but still insubordinate," Callan intoned, looking back down at the leather-bound folder in his hands. He was standing with his suit jacket draped

**Isa"Check this again. You shouldn't be missing this kind of stuff during reviews."That's what the sticky note on my pile of paperwork said when I got to my office Monday morning, a few weeks after the incident where I'd drank way too much out at the bar with my coworkers. I huffed at the little green piece of paper and wondered how long it had been waiting for me. Did this man ever go home?I picked up the papers and looked them over to find red ink circling a few places where the numbers on the report didn't match up. I wouldn't have missed this, I thought. Looking closer at the document, I quickly realized that this paper hadn't passed through my hands until now. Yet, I was the one being blamed for this mistake. How annoying. Clearly, it was time to have a chat with my team about how this was supposed to work. They shouldn't be handing things off to Callan without me seeing them first. But right now, there was someone else I wanted to speak with.I

**CallanI could no longer tell what Isa was thinking. Of course, I hadn't intended to scold her nor ask her out on a business date, yet here I was. I'm sure she was more thrown than I was. She had really been doing some weird things to me and my mind, especially since I had been able to recall who exactly she was.The problem was that I didn't think she remembered me at all, and I wasn't sure what to do now. Not only that, but my attraction to her had twisted my usual habit of finding people's strengths and critiqing them until they do better, and instead, it caused me to start looking like I was picking on her. That wasn't the case at all. Yes, I did point out some flaws in her work, and I did leave her annoying sticky notes, but it was never my intention to make her feel like I was pointing her out in a crowd and trying to make her look bad.I looked at her, silently hating myself for being too much myself.... How was it that she was able to both activat

**IsaThe printer whizzed and buzzed and shot out the quarterly report in a quick steady rhythm. The sound was entrancing as I watched the papers spit out one by one into the tray. My mind wasn't anywhere in particular, but something in there told me to get back to reality. As soon as I looked up, Callan was walking by with Jeffery chatting away at his side. He turned his head to see me standing by the copy machine, and he smiled effortlessly. It was a small twist of the lips that was neither flirty nor professional.Perhaps I wasn't fully out of my dazed moment, but I couldn't even process our wordless exchange until he had gone by and disappeared down the hall. Instead of making my heart race or my blood boil like he had been doing the past few weeks, this time I felt a bit… sad. No. I think I felt guilty. I knew that I had the right to be upset with him for being nitpicky about my work just because it was a little different than the way he and his

**Callan Believe it or not, I actually liked the breakroom's coffee more than the coffee from downstairs. Maybe it was the brand of creamer, or maybe it was the simple fact that knowing I could see Isa put me in a mood where I suddenly liked everything infinitely more. I stirred in the creamer, two splashes, just enough to turn the color from black to almost-black. The room was empty by now, and I knew that with it being as late as it was, almost 6:00, my chances of seeing Isa were slim. But still, it was nice to be out of my office and away from my phone and computer. Catherine was on my back nearly every day now it seemed, which only made me want to escape that much more. I sighed and leaned back against the cabinets. I caught a whiff of the eucalyptus oil that Isa had lent me. It really did help a little, as it turned out, even though it seemed like most of my headaches were incurable. That's what I got for staring at blue lights for ten hours a d

**IsaI jumped back away from Callan as if I'd touched a hot stove. Even in a crisis situation, I couldn't hold onto him like that. Even in the far corner, I could feel the way his strong arms grabbed me. They felt so secure, so sure."Well, at least we have the light," Callan said with obviously forced relief. It appeared he wasn't the only one who wasn't thrilled with the idea of being stuck in the elevator. I backed up deeper into the corner of the elevator, grabbing on tightly to the railing with my hands, my knuckles blanched white. His cologne was surrounding me, blocking all my rational senses while filling me with temptations."You good?" Callan asked. I looked up at him. His bangs were slightly misplaced, but he looked sexy with the touseled look. And the dim lighting of the elevator was causing his pupils to expand, giving him an air of intrigue. "Huh? Oh, I'm just not a fan of enclosed spaces…" I said. "Well, we'll get out of here soon,

**CallanWhen Isa flipped her hand over and intertwined our fingers, it took everything in my not to launch myself at her. Our proximity had been driving me crazy for the last few minutes since she stopped crying. I faltered. She was literally just suffering from a panic attack, so maybe now wasn't the time to be making these kinds of moves, I told myself. But my body felt like a slow-motion magnet the way it went to her on autopilot. And the way she squeezed my hand and closed her eyes as I got closer. Her lips… were so close. DING DINGIsa jerked her hand out of mine, and eyes popped open in fear. Great timing, I groaned mentally. Just as suddenly as the elevator had stopped, it was eager to kick us out again. Secondly, she was doing plenty of scuttling away on her own

**IsaRather than being exhausted when we got back home from Portland, I felt lighter. I had been amazed by Callan this weekend. He got along so well with my friends, he handled my father with silent and stern strength and composure, and even if my mom didn't say anything, I thought he might have had a positive effect on her too. I was really starting to feel like things were going to be okay now.Callan was so much more than I thought from the first night I met him. But my first impression of him was right: he was special. I was glad that my feelings lingered as long as they did, and that, when he finally came around to remembering me, we found a way to become part of each other's lives. Yeah, for too long I'd let myself get knocked around by the fear of what other people would think of me, but now, especially after the weekend, I really felt Callan's love. I really felt my appreciation for him, too. It made me realize what him and Myalin and even his aunt

I hadn't talked much about my dad with Callan, and I never told him about the last time I met with my father or his demand to give me the inheritance money. But I guessed learning what kind of guy he had been during my childhood was enough to make Callan dislike him. "He didn't say what was wrong exactly, but he said it's urgent, and that he needs to speak with me in person as soon as possible. He even… mentioned that my mom is with him and that they want to have a family discussion," I said. I felt like I was in a daze. If my mom was involved, it must be something serious. That thought scared me.Callan patted my hand. "Should we go? I can go with, if that's okay."As much as I didn't want Callan to have to meet my father, I was more afraid of another scene breaking out between us. By the end of that day, Alyssa and I felt like sisters, and Veronica felt like my aunt, too.I even got to talk with Veronica's husband for a while, as well as a couple of Callan's cousins. Roman showed up at the end, and we were able to get fairly acquainted. To be honest, I was on a high after that weekend. A happy high.Even the continued whispers at work weren't enough to bring me down. Yes, it was discouraging to hear people say that I was using Callan, or even that he was being irresponsible by dating someone who worked under him, but I really took Veronica's advice to heart. She had told me that people wouldn't understand or come to accept our relationship if we kept trying to hide it. Well, now that it was out in the open, there wasn't any reason I thought of that should keep us remaining in the dark.So even if we weren't holding hands or o

**Callan"I guess that means it's you and me again this year," Aunt Veronica said with a sly smile. She slid her hand through the crook of my elbow and tugged me towards her. I glanced at Isa, who looked both surprised and nervous. She was watching Alyssa skip towards us wearing a big smile like Alyssa was taking a jaunt down the yellow brick road. "Isa," I asked, "are you sure you're okay with this? If it's too much then—""No. No, it's fine," she replied with a small grin. "It'll be a good chance for me to get to know your sister. I just hope she doesn't hate me for never having made a cake before.""The only way I could hate you is if you did something to hurt my brother," Alyssa said nonchalantly, popping up behind Isa. **IsaI wondered if it was really okay for me to go to Callan's sister's birthday party as his girlfriend when I hadn't yet met any of his other family members. The only one I'd seen was his father, and last I knew, he didn't seem to be a big fan of mine. "Won't your dad be upset that I'm here?" I asked when Callan opened up the passenger side door for me to get out of his car. Callan helped steady me on the grass as I was wearing my new purple Gucci heels. "I've talked to him," he said. "He won't make you feel uncomfortable. I have his word."I intertwined my fingers with Callan's and let him lead me up to his family's house. It still felt too soon to be meeting his whole family at once. "And what about everyone else?" I asked as we neared the house. My whole chest was vibrating with my anxious heart. Callan stopped me and spun me gently to face him. He placed his hands on my hips and planted a little kiss on my lips. "They're gonna love you, I'm sure

**IsaI hung up the phone and headed to the printer to grab the new documents that had just been sent to me for another client SoulMode had picked up. Earlier that morning, Callan and I had filled out the HR paperwork signifying that we were beginning a serious relationship, but that we would remain professional in the workplace, and there would be no favoritism played between us. It was a strange thing to do, I thought. It was as if we had to get permission from his place of work. But on the other hand, I felt a great sense of relief. Since the documents were so official, it felt like I would have a good defense if anyone asked me about our relationship. On my way to the printer, I watched everyone out of the corner of my eye to see if any news about Callan and I had been leaked yet. Considering all of the rumors I'd heard about him when I first got here about him being a playboy and having had something to do with the last few people who worked here, I assumed

"And first, since it's still early and you happened to not bring any extra clothes, it gives me a good excuse to take you shopping to find a nice outfit for today."I blushed. It touched my heart that he had been planning this for a long time, but it also made me feel kind of guilty. I thought perhaps if I let him do whatever he wanted today I'd be able to pay him back for making him wait so long. "You're taking me shopping?" I asked. "Are you sure that's your idea of a date?"He nodded and shrugged. "I know people might hate it when people with money say things like this, but I just want to spend some money on you," he said.I laughed out loud. He rested his hand gently on my thigh and looked up at me. "I mean it this time," I said. Seeing how upset he had been before, and realizing that I had been way too wishy washy with him, I wanted to show him that I really did care about him and that I wanted to take our relationship seriously. "It seems like you should have done this a lot sooner, and maybe then it would have saved you from some of this trouble," I said, glancing at the newspaper. **IsaI hadn't been this nervous in a long time. My hands were sore from me trying to wring them of my anxieties. My chest was so tight, I wasn't even sure if I was breathing unless I made the audible sound. And my stomach ached and pinged with reminders that I was supposed to be laying off of stressful endeavors. But this seemed unavoidable. And frankly, I was curious. This man who my mother and I had managed to escape over ten years ago was there on the other side of a dingy diner window waiting for me to meet him. The man who'd caused me and my mother so much trauma, he was here. I hadn't seen a picture of my dad, let alone seen his face in person, since my mom and I got away, but I recognized him in an instant. He was a little rougher around the edges, dressed in a ratty bomber-style jacket with patches and with oily ringlets of hair hanging over his forehead. I took a deep breath and entered the diner. It was small with worn leather barstools and booth
