Chapter 9

Author: Simple Sketch
Eliott put on his windbreaker and rushed back to town.

As soon as he was gone, Zelda revealed her true colors. She collapsed on the floor in the hotel room and yelled hysterically, “Anne, I hate you! I hope you die a miserable death!”

While Eliott was in the taxi on the way to the airport, he finally took the initiative to call me for the first time in days.

Other than being earthquake-proof, fortunately, our home was not located in the epicenter of the earthquake, thus it was not hit very hard.

Ava was still passed out and could not sense the faint vibration of the phone ringing.

When nobody picked up his call, Eliott began to panic. He called again and again, his fingers beginning to tremble.

Finally, Ava was awakened by the continuous buzzing of the phone. When she read the name of the caller on the screen, the look in her eyes remained as dim as ever.

In the past, this was the person she regarded as her dearest. Eliott used to be a central pillar in her life. She had always

Ava lay quietly on top of me with a handkerchief in her hand. She imitated the way I used to wipe her clean in the past and tried to wipe off the blotted purple marks on my corpse. Her eyes drooped when she thought about what Zelda told her.“Mommy is dead.” Her voice was faint and filled with the enormous weight of sadness. She continued, “She can't speak, can't move, and her body is stiff.”Eliott's hand was trembling as he clutched onto the phone tightly. The taxi suddenly hit the brakes without warning and launched him forward from the backseat. His face slammed against the seat, and blood immediately spurted out of his nose. When he wiped the blood off, the bright red color made him feel dizzy. The driver apologized profusely, but all Eliott heard was an incessant buzzing in his ear. He shook his head frantically to get his thoughts together. The taxi driver asked anxiously, “Sir, are you okay? Do you need to go to the hospital?”Eliott remained curled up in the back seat th

  • No Room for Forgiveness   Chapter 11

He stepped into the living room and spotted me slumped on the couch with Ava lying on top of me. Then, he lapped around the couch and called out in a cheery voice, “Hey, are you still upset at me…”All of a sudden, he stopped dead in his tracks. A terrible shiver ran through him and he started to sweat profusely.Seven days had passed since I died. My corpse was decomposing by this point. Large purple spots were blotted all across my body, and there was even body fluid oozing out.Meanwhile, Ava was lying next to me and clutching tightly to the hem of my clothes. She was so sick that her skin had turned a scorching red.Eliott wanted to speak, but what came out was completely incoherent as his lips trembled. He chuckled stiffly and asked, “Anne, what are you doing? Why are you sleeping here?”He tossed aside the bag containing the present and went into the bedroom to get a large blanket.“It must be cold sleeping out here. Here, I got a blanket for you. Make sure you don’t catch

  • No Room for Forgiveness   Chapter 12

My autopsy report was completed, and the conclusion was that I had died of a sudden heart attack.Zelda indirectly caused my death and could not worm her way out of the legal charges. The only thing that was of any comfort to me was that Ava was safe and sound. However, she no longer had the brilliant look of innocence like she did in the past. Her eyes were gray and hollow, and I could not tell what she was thinking about most of the time. After cremating me, Eliott looked after my ashes for seven whole days. Then, he spent his days guarding my tomb which was on the top of a mountain. It was as if it was his only reason for living at this point.Seven days after I was buried, Ava went up to the mountain to visit me as well. The moment Eliott saw her showing up, a sparkle of hope shone in his eyes again.“Right, Anne, there’s still our daughter! I can’t let myself waste away like this.” He scrambled over to Ava and embraced her tightly in his arms. “Ava, Daddy is going to take ca

After that, someone from Eliott’s family visited my parents to claim custody of Ava.My parents responded by laying out an array of kitchen knives and large sticks in front of the door. The threat was very effective and scared them away.Though they may be old, they were tough as nails. My mother bellowed sharply, “Ava is an heir of the Margos and will always be until the day she dies! She will not have anything to do with you Walkers!”She had begun sobbing by the time she got to her second sentence. “You people killed my daughter! She was so young! How could you be so cruel!”It crushed me to hear my mother mourning me so forlornly. My father stayed by my grieving mother’s side to support her. He looked up to the sky with a glazed expression and cried out, “Anne, can you see us from up there? We don’t blame you for what happened. We just hope you are doing well in the afterlife. My child, you were so foolish and stubborn back then. All you did was sign your death warrant!”My

I had the worst argument to date with Elliot. It ended with him swiping everything off the table and shouting at me, “Anne, quit suspecting me! Nothing is going on between me and Zelda!”I silently put away the lipstick I found inside his shirt pocket. It was a limited-edition lipstick from a luxury brand, which was very difficult to find. I could tell someone had used it. I sighed desolately. “Could you at least control yourself in front of our child?”He slapped my wrist and made me drop the lipstick to the ground. His strike left a bright red imprint of his palm on my skin.“I’m sick of living like this. You can do whatever you want from now on.”With that, he grabbed his coat and walked out, slamming the door behind him as he left. The sound of the door slamming shut was so loud that it made my ears throb.I squatted meekly on the ground to clean up the mess he left behind. That was when my daughter, who was only five years old, ran out of the bedroom. She gently hugged me a

When Eliott stormed off, I wished he would have the guts to never come back.Alas, whether he cheated on me or not was the last thing on my mind now. I did not care about Zelda and her son insulting me either. If he wanted to cremate me and toss my ashes to the floor, I would not mind either. So long as he came home as soon as possible. Our daughter was only five years old and could not possibly take care of herself. It was dangerous to leave her all alone. My spirit stayed with her from morning until dusk, but Eliott was still nowhere to be seen.At one point, her stomach started to growl with hunger, which made her crawl up to me again.“Mommy, are you still sleeping? I’m hungry, I want to eat the sausage rolls you make.”I was trying to get her to stay away from junk food, which was why there was nothing ready-made at home. The fridge was filled with raw ingredients which I started to regret. If only I knew that my time with her was limited, I would have spoiled her. I shoul

I was disgusted by the sight of how smug Zelda and her son looked. At this point, I was done with seeing them affectionate with each other. Besides, I was still worried about Ava, who was at home. When I got back home again, Ava was still next to my body. Her eyes were red like she had just cried. She even brought her favorite bunny plushie to my side. The bunny was made of cheap material that caught dust, and I had always forbade her from sleeping with it because of hygiene concerns. To convince her to give it to me, I would tell her that I liked the bunny too so that she would hand it over. It was usually not very effective. She would cry and throw a round of tantrums before finally relenting. And now, she lifted my arm that had turned stiff and stuffed her most precious bunny into my hands. She then murmured, “Mommy, you can have Bunny. I don’t want it anymore. Please don’t be angry at me.”She then wrapped herself around my arms. “Mommy, you can sleep with Bunny. Will you for

Upon hearing Ava's voice, Eliott's tone softened immediately. “Ava, why are you calling me? Where's Mommy?”Ava nervously clasped her fingers around the phone, “Mommy is sleeping. I am sick and I can’t carry Mommy to the bedroom. Can you do it, Daddy?”Eliott fell silent for what felt like forever. It sounded like he was trying to control himself from bursting out. At last, he stated as calmly as possible, “Give Mommy the phone.”Ava put the phone to my ear and told him, “Mommy’s here.”Now that Ava was out of earshot, Eliott’s tone became sharp and aggressive again.“Anne, what is the meaning of this? Are you trying to use Ava to gain my sympathy? She’s just a girl. Don’t you dare bring her into this mess! I will not be coming home for a while, so you should take the time to reflect. I’ll only come home once you realize what you have done.”With that, he hung up and left the desolate drone of the phone buzzing in my ears. Considering how quickly he hung up on me, he must not hav

Five days after my death, Ava was at her limit. She had been coughing for a few days because of a severe fever. Despite that, she forced herself to stay awake next to my side so she could watch over me.Whenever her eyes would fold against her will, she would pry them open and slap herself on the cheek to keep herself awake.Eventually, she realized there was no point in any of this. She bit her lip faintly and tried to call Eliott again. This time, the call was connected almost immediately. Ava was thrilled and started to plead with a voice that had become hoarse from the fever.“Daddy, I’m so tired. I’m going to fall asleep. I can’t take care of Mommy anymore. Can you come home to help?”It was the voice of a woman who answered, and her voice was ominously dark. Zelda had become just as alert to a phone call as Eliott was. Her goal was to sever all connections between Eliott and me.When she realized it was Ava calling again, she became vicious. “Take care of Anne? What for? Is

  • No Room for Forgiveness   Chapter 7

Eliott pulled Max so close to him that the stubble of his beard scratched against the boy’s face. He told him off, “You little brat, did you think I taught you how to use the toy gun so you can shoot me with it?”Max turned away, refusing to look at him, and huffed, “Anyone who makes my mommy cry is my enemy!”Eliott was humored by how headstrong the boy was and suddenly chuckled. He playfully pinched Max’s nose before announcing, “Alright, I will take you two on a trip.”Now that Zelda and Max had finally extracted the answer they wanted from Eliott, they went back to their room to pack their luggage.Meanwhile, Eliott who stayed on the balcony reached for his phone. His fingers hovered across his message logs with me. Apart from Ava’s call, it had been three days since I last contacted him.In the past, I was always the first to make peace with him no matter how severe our argument. I did it for Ava's sake. Even if Eliott was the one in the wrong, he made a show of graciously fo

  • No Room for Forgiveness   Chapter 6

Ava was thrilled to see her father calling. She picked up the call and greeted him in a tender voice. To her surprise, it was a woman’s voice on the other end of the phone. It was Zelda calling using Eliott's phone.Upon hearing Ava's voice, she mocked her with a wry laugh, “Little girlie, I'm not your daddy. He’s playing with my son now. He doesn’t want you anymore!”Ava burst into tears and cried out angrily, “You are a big meanie! Daddy wouldn’t abandon me!”Zelda’s voice grew irritable when she heard Ava crying. “What are you crying about? Wait till I move in there. I’ll send both of you packing!”I could tell why Zelda was calling. It had been three days since Eliott last came home, so she was calling me to declare war on me.Imagine if Eliott did end up marrying her. I was terrified to even think about what that would mean for Ava. How could she fare under such circumstances?I felt a wave of panic sweep over me.Suddenly, I felt like I had become the most nasty, selfish

Ava's fever was getting worse by the minute. She hugged my arm and mumbled while dozing off.“Mommy, why doesn't Daddy care about us? Does he not want us anymore?”I wouldn’t manage to answer the question even if I was still alive. I wanted to tell her that none of this was her fault. The only reason her father was being so cruel was that he did not love Mommy anymore. He had fallen for Zelda. Even if Max was not from his flesh, he still doted on him. His problem was not with Ava specifically, but only with the fact that she was a child he had with me.Ava curled herself into a ball, appearing frail. Despite that, she was very headstrong and stayed by my side.Around midday, a gleam of sunlight shone into the room. Several beads of sweat glistened on her forehead. She held my hand which had gone cold for a long time, then she started to cry.“Mommy, I'm so hungry. I feel terrible. Mommy, please wake up. I miss you.”She was suffering from the terrible heat sweltering inside her
