Chapter 4

I still vividly remembered that day in court. Chris sat in the back row, watching with a cold expression.

After the sentence was announced, I collapsed to the floor, feeling completely lost and helpless.

He walked past me and sneered, “Emily, you deserved this.”

In prison, I was beaten and abused, enduring endless nights of pain.

I still did not understand what I had done wrong.

I walked for a long time until I reached a rundown neighborhood on the outskirts of the city. The area was a mix of shabby buildings, bustling with all kinds of people. Rent was cheap, and it was easier to find work.

I asked around at a few restaurants, but none of them needed a dishwasher. Clothing stores and small grocery shops were hiring, but the thought of dealing with customers made me anxious.

After a whole day of searching with no luck, the sun began to set, and the streets were filling up with people heading home.

I got pushed to the side of the road and ended up crouching in a corner,
