An Unexpected Revelation

The doctor looked at us, her expression soft but unyielding. “I understand your surprise, but these results are accurate. Sometimes, diagnoses change. Bodies change. And from what we’re seeing here, you’re in the very early stages.”

Sally was the first to speak up, her voice a little shaky. "Can we… can we see the report?"

The doctor handed us the report, and we both scanned it, even though it may as well have been written in a different language. It was undeniable; every line pointed to one thing: I was, somehow, actually pregnant.

Still, I couldn’t believe it. It felt like the rug had been pulled out from under me. I shot Sally a look, and she nodded, as if reading my mind. “Thank you, Doctor, but I think we’ll get a second opinion.”

The doctor nodded, still patient. “Of course, Mila. If you need any further assistance, don’t hesitate to reach out.”

We barely made it out the door before Sally pulled me aside. “Mila, we need to check this again. Let’s go to another hospital. Maybe this was just a fluke—a mix-up.”

I nodded, my mind too jumbled to think clearly. We rushed to another hospital, trying not to speak too much on the way, each of us lost in our own swirling thoughts. Once there, we went through the same procedures, the same tests, the same tense waiting room. When the second doctor walked in with the results, he looked down at me with the same gentle smile.

“Mila, you’re pregnant.”

My heart pounded, but I was still in denial. "There must be some kind of mistake,” I whispered, my voice barely audible.

But the results were the same, no matter how much I tried to deny them.

As we returned home, I barely noticed anything around me, my mind clouded with thoughts I couldn’t fully grasp. How could this even be possible? Just three weeks ago, Alex and I had finalized our divorce, the final blow of a relationship that had been strained by one cruel truth: I couldn’t conceive. That had been the whole reason for our separation—Alex wanted an heir, a son to take over his empire, and he’d found that with Lily. She’d given him exactly what he wanted, while I had been discarded, told that my body simply wasn’t capable.

But now, somehow, I was pregnant. The doctors I’d seen before were specialists, renowned professionals. They’d made it clear—my condition was irreversible. Yet here I was, my reality suddenly turned upside down, facing a truth that should have been impossible.

Sally was by my side, sensing the storm of confusion that swirled inside me. She reached out, her voice gentle. “Mila, this… I know it doesn’t make any sense, but maybe it’s a miracle in disguise?”

I looked at her, her words barely reaching me through the fog of disbelief. "But how, Sally? How can this happen after everything I was told? Alex left me for this reason. He didn’t think I’d ever be able to have a child—none of us did."

She gave my hand a comforting squeeze, pulling me back from the spiral of thoughts. “I don’t have the answers, Mila. But maybe instead of questioning it, just… breathe. Take this one day at a time. I’m here for you. We’ll figure it out together.”

I nodded, trying to find comfort in her words, but my mind was too unsettled to find peace just yet. We decided to keep ourselves busy, throwing ourselves into little chores around the house to distract from the whirlwind of emotions. Sally stayed close, her steady presence grounding me as we moved through the motions of a typical day, even if everything felt far from ordinary.

Just as I was starting to lose myself in the familiar rhythm of tidying up, my phone buzzed on the counter, interrupting my thoughts. I felt a chill run down my spine as I saw the number—no name, just that same unknown contact who’d called yesterday. Hesitantly, I unlocked the phone, opening the message. It was an address—a location far from here, almost on the outskirts of the city.

Sally noticed my change in expression immediately, looking over with a frown. “Is it him again?”

I nodded, showing her the screen. “He sent a location. Looks like it’s miles away… it’s nowhere close to anything I’d expect.”

She looked from the phone to me, her brow furrowing with concern. “Do you think you’ll go?”

I hesitated, unsure if I was ready to walk into whatever was waiting at that address.
