Astrid comes to her senses sooner than I hoped.
“Fine. I’ll apologize!” She grits her teeth and fips her hair out of her face.
Then, she heads back to the woman she has been arguing with.
“I’m sorry, okay? Happy now?”
The woman crosses her arms. “That’s not an apology. Say it like you mean it.”
Astrid glares at her, looking like she’s about to snap again, but when she glances my way, maybe hoping for some intervention, I simply urge her to go on.
She sighs, rolling her eyes heavenwards. This time, she turns to the kid sitting in the chair.
“I’m sorry for what happened. I shouldn’t have reacted that way.”
It’s far from heartfelt, but it’s the best I’m going to get out of her.
The kid, however, says nothing—just sits there, staring in he
[Vivienne]As soon as I get the call from the school about the incident at the zoo, I drop whatever I’m doing and drive straight to the school. That’s where the kids were supposed to gather after the zoo visit, picked up by parents if they didn’t have a bus service.Axel did have a bus service, but I couldn’t wait to see him.My son was hurt. There was no way I was waiting for that damn bus to bring him home. I had to see him ASAP.As soon as the car pulls up at the gates of the school, I spot him near the building, standing in a line like the rest of the kids, with at least four teachers guiding them to the bus one by one.“Axel!”Axel frowns, looking up in my direction. “Mommy?”I don’t care that I’m supposed to wait for the teacher to dismiss him properly. I’m already out of the car, practically running toward him.“Mommy!” His face lights up the moment he hears my footsteps nearing. His little hands stretch out in front of him, searching for me, and I’m right there, scooping him u
[Caden]“You’re home!” Mother says as soon as she sees us entering the house. She rushes to my side, quietly asking one of the maids to take sleeping Benjamin to his room.“He looks tired,” she says once he’s far enough not to hear a word.“Yeah. It was a long day for him.”She smiles, but when I try to head to the dining room, maybe to grab something to eat, she grabs my arm and pulls me back instead.Confused, I look back at her.“Sasha is here,” she says quietly, the expression on her face clearly suggesting how much she hates that. “She says she wants to talk to you, but we both know what she wants. I want you to just see her and send her away. We don’t want her anywhere near Benjamin.”Sasha.Of course.“Where is she?”“In the living room,” Mother replies, her eyes narrowing with concern. “She’s been waiting for almost an hour.”“Alright, send her to the office. I need to eat something first.”Mother doesn’t mind and asks one of the maids to do as I said. After finishing a sandwi
[Vivienne]A week has passed, and Axel hasn’t stopped talking about the man who helped him at the zoo. It’s like he’s found a new obsession—and not the healthy kind.“Don’t look so miserable,” Alexander says as we sit at the restaurant, having lunch. “He’s just being a kid, that’s all.”“I know,” I groan, wiping a hand down my face. “But I don’t like him being so obsessed with some man he doesn’t even know. I’m scared he’s too trusting, and we both know that never ends well.”“Now you’re just being paranoud,” he drawls, placing his hand on top of mine, reminding me yet again that I might not be ready for any physical comfort right now—not from any man.I pull my hand back and lean in my chair. If Alexander thinks I’m being weird, he doesn’t say so. Instead, he leans back in his chair himself, putting down his fork.“I can always find out who that man was, you know. If that will put your mind at ease.”“Nah,” I wave a hand in dismissal. “You’re probably right. I’m being paranoid. It’ll
[Vivienne]“The presentation is ready!”I turn around to find Andrew standing at the door of my office.“Well, then who are we waiting for?” I get up from my chair, grab my blazer, and head out the door, Andrew following with the briefcase where the presentation must be secured.Andrew makes a call to bring the car around while I dial Ana, hoping to let her know that I’ll be late.“Don’t forget to pick Axel up from school,” I say as soon as she answers.“Of course, madam.”“And don’t feed him ice cream on the way. He already had it yesterday, but he might get naughty and tell you he didn’t.”She chuckles on the other end. “I got you, madam. Anything else?”“Just… keep an eye on him,” I sigh, thinking about this business conference that’s so crucial for me to attend. “I’ll be back as soon as I can.”Ana assures me that she’ll do her best to take care of Axel, and I try my hardest to find relief in her confidence. The call ends, and the car arrives.Andrew opens the door for me.“My lad
[Vivienne]During the entire meeting, I have this constant, annoying feeling of being stared at.And not just by anyone. But by the most obvious man in the room.At times, I have the strongest urge to call him out on how unprofessional he’s being, but every time I work up the courage to do so, someone addresses me, trying to engage me in conversation or ask for my feedback.I’m grateful to whoever is up there, hearing my pleas for a break, when the meeting adjourns for lunch. The people slowly file out while Andrew steps away to attend a call.I wait for him to return, but before he does, I feel Caden slide in next to me, as if he doesn’t care about an audience. Not that he has to—there isn’t a single soul left in the room except for us.How hungry do these fucking elites have to be to clear out the room in less than five minutes?A lot, I guess.“We meet again,” he says, pulling me out of my thoughts. But I don’t have to entertain his nonsense. I’m a grown woman. I run a fucking busi
[Caden]When I got the call from home about Benjamin being sick, I did everything in my power not to rush to the hospital myself. But just as I was preparing to drop everything and leave, Mother called and assured me that everything had been taken care of. She said Benjamin was much better now, and if she really needed me there, she would let me know.Somehow, I tried to find comfort in her assurance. But God knows, I couldn’t do anything except sit in the waiting room assigned to my company, waiting for Mother’s call as she visited the hospital.I couldn’t even attend the meeting after lunch. But that’s alright. I was only there to observe, not participate.Sure, I missed Vivienne’s presentation, considering she was the last one to address the members, but maybe that was for the best.Ever since she spotted me at the conference hall, she’d been
[Vivienne]“I think there’s some misunderstanding,” I heard Andrew say from the main door. “We didn’t order any food.” Then, as if to himself, he muttered, “Or did we?”He turned to face me, looking as confused as I was beginning to feel. “Did you order anything to eat?”“Nope! The first thing I did after getting the room was take a shower. And it’s only been about ten minutes since I stepped out. So, no. I did not order any food. Not yet.”“See? I told you,” he said to the staff standing outside the door. “No order.”“But sir, the order is for your room only,” the man tried to reason.“That’s why I’m calling it a misunderstanding, isn’t it?”“What’s taking so long?” I ask when the back-and-forth between the two of them continues for the next five minutes.Andrew turns to face me once more, looking more agitated than ever. “He refuses to take the food back.”“And why’s that?”“Says his manager would fire him if he didn’t deliver the order. It would be his third strike in a month.”I r
“I’m not interested.” I’m ready to slam the door shut, but he blocks it with his leg.“You will be if you just see it once.”“I don’t want to see anything, Caden. Now, please, if you’ll just leave, that would be great.”“I can’t.” He continues to block the door, and it’s safe to say this is the most frustrating thing I’ve experienced in the past few years.“You have to. You can’t force me into doing anything. I’m not your wife.”“No, you’re not,” he says, tilting his head slightly. “But that doesn’t mean I’ve forgotten everything about you.”I scoff unknowingly. “Oh, really? And what exactly do you think you remember?”He leans in just a fraction, voice lowering like he’s about to share some grand secret. “That you hate not knowing things.”I hate that he’s right. But that doesn’t mean I have to give in every time my curiosity tries to get the best of me.I huff instead. “Cute theory, but I’ve grown since then. Maybe I don’t care as much anymore.”“Doubtful. But tell you what, Vivienn
[Caden]Murmurs ripple through the room as the businessmen exchange glances. Some nod in agreement, while others look skeptical.Andrew perks up next. “That’s when we started asking the right questions. Who had access to the hotel’s power grid? Who stood to gain the most from tarnishing the reputation of such a prestigious establishment? Someone was clearly targeting it—because a simple robbery at a place like this? It was practically begging for trouble.”Vivienne allows the murmurs to settle before continuing. “Exactly. This wasn’t just a simple robbery—it was a calculated attack. Someone wanted to create chaos, to damage the hotel's reputation, and they nearly succeeded.”Andrew takes charge. “We looked into the security logs, the emergency generator records, and the maintenance reports. What we found was… interesting.”A businessman in the front row frowns. “Get to the point. Who was behind it?”Vivienne steps forward, her gaze cutting through the room with precision. “The blackou
[Caden]The next morning, when I wake up, I feel much better than I did after a night of tossing and turning.Bad dreams keep me awake as I do everything I can to shut them out.So, after barely two hours of proper sleep, I get up and open my eyes, only to realize I’m back to being my normal self again.I sigh. “This could have been so much worse.”I shake my head and get off the bed. Now that the storm has passed, it’s time to get ready and be on my way back home. Benjamin must be waiting for me like hell.An hour later, I’m already walking out of my room, my briefcase in hand, when the first person I bump into is my assistant herself.“Good morning, Mr. Lawrence,” she greets, easily reaching for my briefcase to help me carry it. I let her do it—not because it’s heavy for me or because I can’t, but because she always wants to.“So, how was your room? Did you sleep well?” I ask her as we make our way to the elevator. She chuckles nervously. “Yes. It was great. But you didn’t have to a
[Caden]I hear her footsteps as clear as day as she stomps over to the nightstand, pours me a glass of water, and, with all the irritation in the world, snaps, “Here you go.”I don’t know where to look or how to gauge the height of her hand, so I do what comes naturally. I reach up, feel the soft strands of her hair, and then guide myself accordingly. Once I find the hand extended toward me, I wrap my fingers around the glass, making contact with her hand in the process, and finally pull it toward myself. But of course, she mistakes my action for something… well, awful.I hear her sigh loudly. “Seriously?”I open the briefcase purely from memory, reach for the pocket that contains my medicine, and pop out one tablet. “What?”She scoffs. “Oh, I don’t know—maybe the fact that you just groped my hair like a creep?”I take a sip of water, chasing the tablet down my throat. “Groped? That’s a rather strong accusation.”“Then what the hell do you call it?”“I don’t know, I just wanted to see
[Vivienne]Somehow, we manage to get off the elevator, but I swear to God, Caden doesn’t make it any easier. He’s acting like his body can’t carry its own weight, forcing me to shoulder him instead.“Enough with the dead weight act, Caden. This is getting ridiculous!” I grumble under my breath, not at all comfortable existing so close to him.But Caden, as if suddenly deaf, pretends not to have heard anything at all.“What?” he asks, way too innocently. “Did you say something?”I suppress the loudest growl ready to erupt from my chest.Just a few minutes more, I tell myself—once we make it to his room, I’m going to throw him in and head straight to my room. Finally, after what feels like forever, we reach his door. I look up to face him. “Where’s your key?”“In my pocket.”I sigh in relief. “Great. Take it out.”He doesn’t move, doesn’t twitch, doesn’t even try.I frown. “Caden.”“What?”I exhale sharply, already feeling my patience wearing thin. “Take that stupid key out. Now!”“I ca
[Vivienne]A strange current passes through my spine at his rare grin.“Don’t ‘what the hell’ me, darling. You were the one who teased me first.”“Are you kidding me?” I growl. “Why would I tease you?”“How would I know?” He shrugs as if he’s actually clueless. “But I do know that you came close first.”“Coming close doesn’t mean I want you to pull me onto your lap.”“No,” he shakes his head. “But it also doesn’t mean you don’t.”I scoff, shifting to push myself off his lap, but his other hand moves to rest lightly on my waist, keeping me there. Not forcefully—just enough to make a point.“Caden.”“Vivienne,” he mirrors, annoying me so much more.“Let. Go.”“I don’t want to.”“You have to.”“And why’s that?”“Because I said so.”“Hmm.” He releases a thoughtful sound, tipping his head as if actually considering it. “Alright. If that’s what you want.” His hold on me loosens, and after a brief, reluctant second, his arms move away, giving me enough space to leave.“Thanks for nothing,” I
[Vivienne]“Alright. You can go. Send the next one,” I say to the fifth person we have investigated so far and watch as he nods too many times and leaves as quickly as he can.“For someone who claims to be innocent, these people sure know how to leave a contradictory impression,” Andrew mumbles as he scratches off another name from the list.Caden huffs out a quiet laugh, barely paying attention as he leans back in his chair. His fingers drum lightly against the table, a slow, rhythmic beat that does nothing to ease my growing frustration.“I swear,” I mutter, flipping through my notes, “if the next person doesn’t give us something concrete, I might actually lose it.”Andrew smirks but doesn’t comment, and Caden—well, he just keeps drumming his fingers, his gaze distant.I don’t know why, but suddenly, something about him feels off.For example, for the last few minutes, whenever I look at him, his gaze stays locked on the chair where the staff sits. Whenever they speak, he nods and k
[Caden]When I was adopted by the Lawrence family, they didn’t know about my… issues.I was a scared little boy then, too afraid of being abandoned again. So I did what I thought was best for everyone—I lied.Thankfully, my eyes didn’t betray me for a long time. For almost a year, I lived a normal life, happy with my new family, who welcomed me with open arms.I came to know a little later that their biological son, Samuel, was born with a twin brother—his name was Simon. But sadly, Simon was born with several complications. He was, in fact, my age when he passed away after several surgeries. And maybe it was the loss of him that made the Lawrence family adopt another son, just so they didn’t have to feel the loss too deeply.Either way, I was too happy to worry about their sadness. I was overjoyed and grateful to have a family again. But then, what I feared most happened. A week before I turned eleven, I lost my sight completely. The worst had happened, and I didn’t know what to do a
[Vivienne]“You did this on purpose, didn’t you?” The moment we are left alone, I glare up at him, my arms crossed over my chest as I try as hard as I can not to make another scene.“And how do you think I did that?” he asks, rather innocently, as if he can’t think of a single reason he would want to do such a thing. The truth is, I can’t actually blame him with full conviction. People did choose me, not him. In fact, he didn’t even say my name, didn’t even suggest anything. It all happened on its own, and yet, I’m pretty sure everything played out just like he wanted.Ugh. I wish I knew how. I would love to get to the bottom of THAT truth. He tilts his head slightly, watching me with that infuriating calm of his. “You give me too much credit, Vivienne,” he says smoothly. “All I did was present an option. The people made their choice.”“You manipulated the entire situation without lifting a damn finger.”“I prefer to call it… guiding the inevitable.”“You’re impossible.”“And yet, her
[Vivienne]When Caden announces his plan to investigate the whole power outage and theft mess, everyone gawks at him as if he just said he’s going to summon aliens to solve the problem. And truth be told, I gawk at him just the same.“What the hell is he doing?” Andrew whispers next to me, probably just as confused as I am.“I have no damn idea,” I tell him, trying to understand why he would walk into this mess in the first place. Was something of his stolen too? Or has he developed some kind of hero complex in the past few years?Andrew scoffs. “Well, good luck to him. This whole thing’s a disaster waiting to happen.”I hum in agreement, watching as Caden takes center stage like he owns the damn place. People are still skeptical, but he has their attention now. And knowing him, that’s probably exactly what he wanted.“And why should we trust you?” Despite most of the people nodding at Caden’s words, one of them speaks up. “I don’t even know you.”“That’s fair,” Caden says, with no hi
