The humid wind blew across the sandy fields of V'rounsthan; grains of dust slammed against the surface of his Aquarius-Class Battle Gear but the sound never bothered him. It was, to his ears, alien just like the environment around him. In their homeworld of Triton, they lived in islets surrounded by a vast dark blue ocean that were occasionally disturbed by the storm that came from the grey cloudy skies.
Here, however, was a desert that changes color depending on where the sun would stop at a given time. In the horizon, it would be purple. If the sun was at zenith point, it was light tan but when the sun sets and paved way for the moon to shine, it was green. The Solar ADF had grown on calling it 'Neon Desert', for some reason.Heaven's forces have landed in the heart of New V'roun City. The Human Monarchs of the planet had requested aid against the green-skinned race that were classified in the government's records simply as the 'Dusk Riders', mainly because of the spiked motorbikes that they rode with quadruple spoilers and red-tinted sound blasters attached on either side of their exotic vehicles, as well as their preferred time to attack. It had been months since Keron and the others were deployed outside of the city gates and in those months, they have already met the Dusk Riders at the opposite side of the no-man's land. The engagement were seldom but it was pretty violent to say the least. They had to evacuate two Gemminite ADF Divisions after numerous skirmishes. Keron had seen the infamous bikes rode by these aliens more than once. He had destroyed and was harmed by a handful. His experiences as a Protektovare of the Sons of the Trident had enabled him to fight them off in situations where he found himself outnumbered. The original number of brothers deployed with him from their Regiment when they first set a foot on V'rounsthan were still alive but the ADFs were another story. Some of them are already expended in the battle while the other few were exhausted. They were just mere mortals whose physiology were not forged to withstand an extended attrition.Keron wondered why the Protectorates aren't deployed in full. Perhaps the V'rounian monarchy are downgrading the threat that the Dusk Riders had posed. There were rumors spreading of the Dusk Riders making pacts with V'rounian deities, but these weren't confirmed. If it was true, then they must destroy the Dusk Riders immediately otherwise, all of Hell would arrive in full force and damn them all.The cyan-clad Protectorate marched under the sun. His white tabard fluttered in the wind as it blew; the golden crucifix affixed on his right shoulder and the large rosary around his waist already told a bystander of what he is. The eye lenses of his faceplate illuminated in deep blue, behind each were inquisitive eyes scanning from left to right.Nothing but sea of dust, dust and dust. His subordinates that comprised of three followed shortly. They dreaded the thought of a reconnaissance mission but there was nothing else to do in the forward base outpost. Everyone, from Solar ADF to the Gemminite ADF, has something to do and it was mostly cleaning, be their boots, equipment or their armored vehicles. They felt ashamed; they were angelic humans and should be models of virtues, most especially diligence. Their idleness would have encourage sloth and laziness instead. So Keron volunteered for a reconnaissance mission to the Tribune-Commander. Long boring walks are much more preferrable than nothing at all. And who knows, they might encounter a small band of Dusk Riders--nothing they couldn't handle. From ahead, a slope rose and on the farther left, a monolith. Keron held a fist upward and all of the Protectorates halted in their tracks. The geographical formations were very common across V'rounsthan but it gave the combatants of this conflict opportunities to ambush a wary patrol group."Keep your eyes peeled, brothers." Keron ordered before treading further. They climbed the slope and descended at the other side shortly with careful strides. The sun was now setting at the other side. Keron's eyes went to the chronometer and noticed the hour. V'rounsthan had only ten hours in a day, unlike Triton which had almost thirty depending on the seasons. Triton, the thought of it made him miss his homeworld. He missed watching the mortals in the surface of the planet from their Pantheon. Beneath the oceans stood domed cities enclosed in transparent steel. The most important of cities were usually found there. If the islets were rural provinces then the domed cities were the highly urbanized areas. For more than once, Keron had been in operations where they 'popped' domed cities occasionally if they became tainted with Lucifer's touch. The process was intricate but it was quick. One moment, a pressurized populace was existing, the next, it was gone.It may be cruel but Keron never felt remorse nor did he developed hatred at the 'Dome-Dwellers' due to their susceptibility to temptation than those who lived in the islets. He could not blame them for they are just Humans. But there are orders to be followed, and all of them came from God.He shook off the thought. Better to die that way than to be snatched by demonic Aerial Octopi, which were mostly the common cause of death for the Isle-Dwellers.He pointed his index and middle finger at the direction of the monolith on the north-west before returning his hand below the barrel of the Type-3 Blast Rifle he was equipped with. They moved tightly in an arc, all weapons were trained at the monolith. As soon as they were close enough, two of them raised their aim on the top while the other two at the base. They moved with haste and purpose until they secured the small monolith and found no threat."Perimeter secured. Moving on." Keron said before continuing across. The desert sand was becoming red as the sun neared the horizon behind them. Keron let out a sigh, the vaporized exhalation was ejected by his faceplate's elongated detachable filters. He placed his left foot on the top of a mound and glanced behind at the city darkened by shadows casted by its conical skyscrapers. Even from afar, he could already taste the life of the city as bright neon lights began to flicker in activation. Keron smiled; his team had formed up around him, covering all corners to see if there are Dusk Riders hiding in wait."I guess we have arrived at the farthest reaches of our territory." His second-in-command, Tier-3 Bladebearer Razion, said without looking. "Do we go back now?""Not now, brother." Keron said as he exhaled deeply. Another streak of geyser emanated from his filters. "Do you not feel that?""What do you mean, brother?""Look around you." Keron quietly said. "It's beautiful."Razion looked around and was instantly mesmerized by the beauty of the world. The sun had already buried half of itself beneath the city, its dying rays painted the world in dark indigo and the sand, purple. Even their brothers paused to regard the view."I see..." he let out a deep sigh, geysers were issued from Razion's breathing filter as a tear escaped from his eye. "I see the Father in His creations. Never have I saw something like this.""Me neither," Keron replied. For the whole minute, they stood there in silence before the thought of leaving finally entered his mind. "It's getting late, let's move."Keron was the first to turn back to the city, followed by Vieron and Aran. Razion was about to tail them when he noticed something shining in the distance."Brothers, halt." Razion said. "I think I see something."Keron froze and turned. His attention was immediately caught by the light in the distance. At first, it appeared as if someone was simply trying to catch their attention by reflecting light at their eyes when a couple more appeared in clusters. It was soon followed by a low hum, like a droning sound that gradually ascends in volume.Keron swallowed. He knew who they are."Damned devils, it's the Dusk Riders!" Keron exclaimed as he hefted his weapon. "All of you, get down!""What's the plan?" Razion asked as he laid with his stomach flat on the ground."By the looks of it, they were probably around fifteen. It's nothing we cannot handle." Keron assured himself. "This was getting frequent." He added in a whisper."I heard that." Razion replied. "Are you going to talk to the Supreme-General about this?""Do you hear yourself? He only communes with the Tribune-Commander. That's whom I will take my sentiment to." Keron replied as he took aim at the advancing column. The shadow of the monolith obscured them all from immediate view, giving them advantage."Say he listened and he took your imploration to the V'rounian King. What if he simply ignores it?""Then this conflict will draw more days until something of significance take place. Maybe the end of this world." He sarcastically said. "Have we not seen enough planet lost because of incompetence?""Maybe it wasn't the Supreme-General's fault?" Aran said
By the time they arrived at the octagonal compound, the sun was already asleep beneath the planet. The green moon had took its reign, bathing the sands in the same color. Even the stars above the night sky appeared to be of greenish hue. Keron stared above in wonder. Despite being there for months, V'rounsthan never failed to amaze him.Ahead, a pair of Sons of Trident Protectorates stood in attention. Keron knew them personally but none of them were in the mood for a casual conversation. The two saluted and greeted him in the Name of God, which he responded with an appropriate reply."Peace be with you, brothers." He said. The Protectorate on the left harshly banged his fist against the gate of the compound, catching the attention of a Solar ADF soldier from the Division of the Black Squadron SAS. He approached with a weapon at hand."Something wrong?" He asked."What do you mean 'something wrong'? Sergeant-Commissar Keron's Patrol Team
The door of Forward Post-131 opened. The walls of the circular structure had no corners but it was big enough to house the modular radio and monitoring equipment inside. There were fifteen Protectorates from the Sons of Trident assigned to the post, but half of the detachment were missing.Keron was greeted by a fellow Tier-4 Sergeant-Commissar, whom he also knew personally. She stepped aside to allow the Patrol Team to enter."Where's the rest?" Keron asked."Responded to an alert." She replied with thick Tritonite accent of the Isle-Dwellers. "But that was three hours ago.""Still no word?""That's why we called you in." She replied.Keron and his team stepped inside. His gaze went around the interior before settling it at his fellow Sergeant-Commissar, who approached the monitors at the farthest back of the room. They followed her."What's going on, Toran?" Keron asked. "I've never seen you so quiet before."
Dawn slowly breaks in the horizon as the first rays of the sun peeked from behind the mountains beyond. Keron watched the thermometer gauge of his display link to see the gradually increasing temperature. If he was a mortal with no protective suit, he would have fell sick because of the chilly wind that blew in the air.A portion of the green desert now became purple as the sun rose in the horizon. Pillars of sand flew as the passing wind carried them up. The grains battered against the plates of their armor while they walked. Aran momentarily looked behind to see the long trails they have left.Keron kept his gaze ahead, looking occasionally from left to right to check for immediate threats. He glanced at the screen of his TacBracer to see how close they are to the beacon. Seeing no difference in the grid, they continued. It was until they rose at the peak of a slope when they heard a noise in the distance. Keron held a fist up and crouched as he searched for t
Once more, they walked across the sands of V'rounsthan. The sun was peeking at zenith point, painting the desert in light tan. The slopes obscured their advance, covering them from the prying eyes of the Dusk Riders who were encamped in the distance. They were half way across when Keron heard the rumbling of engines and the sound of spoilers spewing smogs in loud coughs."They're advancing!" Razion said."And there is nothing to be afraid of." Keron replied as he continued. "We will be able to outflank them definitely.""I hope you are right."They reached the end of a long slope and moved around the corner. Keron strode with confidence before a round was fired and penetrated his right breast. Keron recoiled backwards as he spat blood from the interior of his helmet. The filters ejected the red liquid while his Battle Gear automatically doused the wound with healing fluids that were dispensed from the damaged part of his armor.
The world streaked past in a blur in his eyes like feverish dreams that he get whenever he was subjected to deep REM sleep after every extended campaigns. He finally familiarized himself with the manipulation of the alien vehicle but the fear of making a mistake was still there. After all, it was just his first time to control such vehicle since things like these never existed on Triton. He does see some ADFs from various star systems use motorbikes but he never cared to learn how to use them.Beyond, Keron could see Forward Post-131. The walls were perforated with dime-sized bullet holes while the front door was left open, allowing grains of sand to flood through. Keron halted before the lone structure, his eyes never leaving the open doorway. He pulled his Blast Rifle out as soon as he disembarked from his bike and approached."Cover my back, brothers." Keron ordered as he neared the doorway. He could see fragments of glass beyond. Keron guessed th
The city was surrounded by large concrete barriers simply known as the Wall both to its citizenry and defenders. It measured far taller than the mundane corporate buildings inside the city borders but its height were equal to the tallest skyscraper there is. It was the last line of defense for the inhabitants of V'rounsthan and the Dusk Riders, unaided, would never be able to penetrate it...yet.Outside the Walls stood a column of armored artillery, each bearing the colors of their respective ADFs. The Solar ADF M1 Abrams and Cromwell tanks being black and blue while the futuristic armored beam tanks of the Gemminite being bright blue and gold. In the opened cupola of the Gemminite vehicles stood bright blue droids with golden skull face plates. Red lights emanated from its empty eye sockets. In the distance, Keron and the Patrol Team arrived in the littered battle zone. He never had the time to react to his surroundings because his attention was caught by the Dusk Riders congregating in the middle, firing their twin pistols at the Protectorates. In an attempt to evade it while keeping his bike steady, Keron leaned to the left. The fender and the dashboard of his bike exploded in pulverized metal and plastic. His front tire was punctured, sending him off the path. His bike ran over a mound of dust while going out of control. He was sent in the air, his bike splitting in half before he hit the ground with a bone breaking impact. He found himself staring at the purple skies, his vision was blurry but gradually gaining clarity. He saw spheres of plasma streaking past above him. The environment was chaotic but he could not hear anything but a loud ringing, which only lasted a few minutes."Brother, get up!" Razion appeared from the corner of his vi
The starport became a fortress. The full might of the detachment from Heaven's fleet could be seen. Tanks, bipedal mechanical machines called 'Walkers' and gun emplacements stood behind rows after rows of ADF soldiers crouching behind sandbags. They were joined by their Protectorate brethrens, providing support whenever they can. The road around them were stained in blood and littered with green skinned corpses in zirobuta-oroi. Until now, no one can penetrate the starport's defenses. Even with the V'rounian gods' help, they ended up withdrawing because they could not defeat the Protectorates on site. When Keron and his team arrived in the vicinity of the starport, a skirmish was currently taking place. Across, groups of Dusk Riders were trying in vain to assault the Protectorates and the ADFs behind the sandbags. The ground troops instantly wiped out those who have wandered very close while the rest were taken down by the artilleries behind them.Keron yelled an order
At once, they stopped. Vieron, Aran and Razion glanced around as if they, too, had noticed something change in their surroundings. Keron tightened his grip at his rifle, his eyes searched for the source of the energy but he couldn't find it. He raised his aim at the corners of the street out of caution."You will not find a god there." A voice called. All Protectorates whirled at the direction of the alley to the right and there, they saw an entity cloaked in rags. Its eyes glowed within its hood. The entity snatched the rag and threw it aside. A man, he was very human-like, with light tan skin, long albino hair and red eyes. A pair of fangs could be seen from the corners of his mouth. He was armored in black and does not looked like a Dusk Rider at all.But the aura, the dark radiance that his body emitted, reeked of pure power. The entity approached and impressed his psychic strength at the Protectorates, who remained idle. Keron felt something scratchin
Keron deactivated his headgear and spat aside. The signage above him lit up in purple. The night drew closer; the skies were now dark blue and the granules of sand around him became green. Keron laughed as a tear escaped from his eye. He looked at the signage and remembered the television set he had in his quarters inside their ship, and in the barracks beyond the Walls. He remembered the arcade as well as the drinks they ingested. Human sensations, coupled that with their interesting technology. He always looked at them with innocence. His gaze went to the stars and the sand. Nothing can beat the Father when it comes with creations. Nature never failed to awe him, especially if the view was panoramically breathtaking. He marveled at the nature's duality. While still bearing beauty, it also provides life to its inhabitants, as well as death. It just confirmed the fact that God was both the Lord over Life and Death. He wanted to continue living so that he could
Keron led the team ahead, his Blast Rifle sweeping the view from left to right. He continued a few steps further when he detected no immediate threats and entered the city's border underneath the archway of concrete.Beyond, the streets were asphalted in grey. The structures that flanked it were small business establishments with dead neon signages. Perhaps the conflict had the owners running elsewhere, leaving this street in gloom. He could see shards of glass and broken furniture in front, tell tale signs of conflict. Keron eased his trigger finger but kept it inside as they moved further. As the Tritonite saying goes, he does not trust the air."Me neither, brother." Razion replied out loud after hearing his leaking thoughts. Keron reminded himself to teach Razion a lesson later in the sparring mat after they are off-world for intrusion, if they ever make it out."Keep your eyes peeled." Keron simply replied, redoubling his mental defense as they travel
