Scarlett woke up with a start immediately after her alarm went off, put a shirt over her head, and rushed downstairs. She would not want to attract any mundane talk from Lucas.
Ever since Daphne left, he complained about everything she did, and how she could barely get a simple job done. She moved about with so much trepidation that made her bump into things, and sometimes, break things as she went."Don't you have any shame?" He would bark at her. She had once thought of leaving the job. She would be better off as a barista in a peaceful coffee shop than in a luxurious home, with good pay but a grumpy boss. But whenever she looked at the kids, and how much they warmed up to her, she would always have a change of mind. She loved them like her own and she would want them to remain in her care. Days had passed and they were only getting fond of her with each passing day.Scarlett flipped the eggs in the pan carefully to avoid a break. It was the way Lucas loved his breakfast. The idea of scrambled eggs did not sit well with him, and he had looked at it with disgust on the first day she had served it to him for breakfast. The croissants were her best part of making breakfast. She enjoyed the entire process. Cooking had not been one of her strong sides, but she tried at every opportunity that she was given. When she had carefully set the table for breakfast, she proceeded to get the kids dressed. She looked in the direction of Lucas' room and his door was slightly ajar. She wanted to go peep inside, to know what the man was up to. As she drew closer, she heard his voice but it was muffled. He seemed to be speaking with someone over the phone."I know that we have a deal, but I cannot just up and leave my children for a few days," his voice was stern, but it was calm, and to her amazement, soothing. He paused and she guessed he was listening. There was no denying that Lucas was an attractive man, and was the cynosure of all eyes. She had once gone to a ball with him and the kids, and she saw the way the women clung to him. He was a widower, and that was an added advantage. He was the most eligible bachelor in the city asides from being one of the richest."Okay then, I will be there tomorrow. I'll ask my secretary to book me a quick flight tonight," he finally said, and she heard him end the call and let out a sigh. Was he traveling?Scarlett did a little celebration dance. She hoped he was, so she could have even a few peaceful days alone with the twins. She soon proceeded to their bedroom and woke them up. Claire was more eager than Callan, but she managed to get them dressed for school after all and bring them downstairs. She set their breakfast before them, and as soon as they had started eating, she reentered the kitchen and began to do the dishes. Lucas stomped down the staircase just then and kissed his kids 'good morning' on the top of their heads."Morning sir," Scarlett said without turning back and she heard him hum his response. She rolled her eyes as she began to plate his breakfast. She felt him boring holes in her back with his eyes. He probably had a disgusted look on his face, she thought. She turned around to go serve him. One look at him and her jaw dropped. Lucas Maxwell was standing there in all his glory, in nothing, but a pair of sweatpants that hung loosely around his torso.Scarlett's eyes went from his messy hair that had strands across his forehead that seemed to be a result of him running his hands through them continuously. He looked like he had been sculptured into the person that he was.His eyes glazed in the morning sun, and his well-muscled arms looked bigger unclad. Her eyes shifted to his broad chest and shoulders and finally fell on his well-toned torso, and the rest of it deliciously disappeared into the sweatpants."Can I have my breakfast?" She heard him bark in a hoarse voice. She rolled her eyes but would not let him see. Of course, he had to interrupt the moment of bliss that she had created for herself out of his well-built figure."My apologies sir." She said, headed to the dining area and placed his breakfast before him. The children were already finished with theirs and she took their plates away."Your croissants are too crusty," he complained, and she saw him take it away from his plate. It made her sad as she had taken her time to prepare it. "I'll have some bread slices instead," he added. She played some immediately and placed it before him swiftly and was grateful she did not bump into anything or break anything as she did so. He would have some more degrading words prepared for her."The eggs are too salty," she heard him complain again and drop his fork loudly as she turned to leave. She shut her eyes tightly and fisted her hands in exhaustion before turning around to him.She saw the scowl on his face and she sensed immediately that it was not just about the food. Something else was on his mind, but she would not show any sign of concern for him. He did not deserve it from her."Just pour me a cup of coffee since you can barely whip up a decent meal for breakfast," he said. His tone was laced with mischief as he looked at her like she disgusted him. When he turned back to his kids, he did so with a big smile, and she wondered how he managed to switch personalities in a split second. Lucas had to be crazy, she thought. As she took out a mug from the cupboard, it slipped from her hand and fell to the floor. She panicked, as she did not know what to expect from Lucas. She did not know why she had to be so clumsy and keep dropping things. She stood there for a long minute, staring at the shattered pieces before she was suddenly hit by a whiff of his cologne as he passed behind her, reached for the cupboard, and took out a mug."I cannot even get a cup of coffee from you without any trouble," she heard him mutter as he went to pour himself some coffee."What is wrong with you though?" He asked her, turning to her angrily. "If this job is too much for you, can you give up already and leave? It's obvious that I do not want you here at all," he blurted, before taking a sip of his coffee."Daddy, stop scolding Scarlett, she is our friend," Claire said softly, and the tears that had brimmed in Scarlett's eyes slipped. Lucas did not say anything. He only headed upstairs, and in some seconds, she heard the door to his study slam shut. The driver soon pulled up in the driveway and Scarlett helped the children into the car and bade them goodbye. As she reentered the house, it was as though she was stepping into the lion's den again. She moved about noiselessly as she put the abandoned breakfast in the trash and did the dishes, muttering to herself how much she had to endure from the man. When she was done, she decided that a quick rest in her room would not hurt. But as she made to enter her room, Lucas slid out of his study. His upper body was still unclad and she swallowed hard."So, have you decided?" He asked her, a smirk playing at the side of his lips."Decided what?" Scarlett asked, feigning confusion, her eyes briefly resting on his lips. She looked away immediately."If you would still retain the job," he answered her as though he knew that he had frustrated her enough. She walked up to him, her chest pounding as she did so, but her eagerness to make him see how angry she was at him overcame her fright. She folded her hands beneath her breasts."Well, first, I am not here for you but your kids," she began, surprised at herself for the kind of audacity that had suddenly enveloped her. "And if they wanted me here, which they do, then I will stay," she added as she looked straight at him, his eyes piercing into hers. She could not read his expression but she knew she saw a defeated smile crawl up his face."I have a meeting outside town tomorrow. I leave tonight. Take care of the kids," he finally said curtly. He turned to leave, but suddenly stopped in his tracks and turned to her again."If anything happens to my kids, I will lock you up for life," he added before he finally left.Scarlett jumped for joy. A few days of freedom would not hurt.Chapter 10"Scarlett, would you come to our school tomorrow?" Callan asked as she served them lunch. She had had a long nap after the kids were gone to school, and now that they were back, she was more than energized to care for them."What for, baby?" Scarlett asked softly, placing the food bowl down for a bit."Tomorrow, our parents are supposed to come to school for a meeting," Claire replied to her."Did you tell your father about it?" She asked them in a concerned tone and the children shook their heads. It was not like she would not want to go to their school, but Lucas might have a different opinion, and she was trying so hard not to annoy him further."Dad has never been to our school for the meeting. Aunty Daphne has always been the one with us, but now that she is gone, we do not know who should go with us," Claire rambled on, and Scarlett listened fixedly."I will have to ask your dad first then," she said, and they nodded happily. She thought about it. Lucas was a jerk and
Lucas sat back on his study desk, the huge mahogany desk secluding his huge frame. Scarlett's voice rang in his mind. The last thing she said to him suddenly haunted him like a plague. He never thought about it in the past. He had loved his ex-wife so much that after her death, it was as though his whole life crumbled with her.He had become emotionally unavailable to everyone around him. He had secluded himself for months after her death and he had to see a therapist before he could move on. Her death still hurt him but he dared to get back to work.To take his mind off the loss, he immersed himself in work. His children were the only ones he still bore some form of emotional attachment to, but he had been so busy with work that he barely saw them.He never knew that Callan had qualified for the kids' baseball team in school and that Claire had learned how to write the alphabet without any help. He only found out these things from their teacher. He constantly ached with a feeling of
Scarlett shivered as she heard his voice. She resolved to apologize to him but he was not taking a chance to look at her or hear whatever she had to say. He rushed over to his daughter as she lay unconscious. Doctor Ezra came in just then."I heard you were around and I decided to come over," he began smiling sheepishly, as though he sought some kind of favor from Lucas."How is my daughter now?" Lucas asked him in a low voice, ignoring his sycophancy. "She is stable now but we would keep her here for a few days, just for further observations," the doctor replied. They soon stepped out for a few words, and Scarlett watched them through the blinds, as though they were deciding her fate. She saw him glance at her once but she looked away.Lucas was livid when he stepped back into the room and he did not utter a single word. He took a seat and Callan curled up to him. He took him in his hands and Scarlett just looked on as he seethed. She was at a loss as to what to do or say next. She
Claire's eyes fluttered open but the bright ward lights forced her to shut them close again. She stirred and it alerted Lucas. He rushed to her immediately and stood over her."Are you okay, baby?" He asked her as he patted her hair softly. She nodded as she gently opened her eyes again, little by little until she fully adjusted to the bright lights. "I'm fine, Daddy. I missed you," she said quietly and looked around. Lucas' eyes grew teary and he looked away immediately and forced them back. He would not be so vulnerable before his children, not after three years of trying to hold back his pain before them.Claire sat up on the bed and a nurse examined her. She looked around the ward. It was beautifully decorated. It had balloons that said 'Get well soon' on them. She looked at the toys that rested on the bed table along with the cards that were brought to her. Her schoolmates and her teacher had visited a day before and they had brought her 'get well soon' cards. Her eyes lit up a
Lucas had had enough of their demand to bring Scarlett back. He was also getting overwhelmed with taking care of them all by himself. He had told Daphne about it, and she only agreed with the kids that Scarlett should be brought back to the house. If they all agreed that Scarlett was who they wanted, then he had to agree that she was good at her job after all. But his pride would not let him. It would seem degrading for him to go back and ask her to resume. He had even sent her a severance package that signified that he would not need her services anymore. He barely had any idea of how to take care of his children, and when he got fed up, he contacted the agency that provided nannies. They assured him that one would be sent to him the next day. When she arrived, she introduced herself as Martha. Lucas had looked over at her. She had a pale expression and he was unsure about how she would handle his kids, but he had put security cameras installed in the whole house, and he would know i
"What do you mean my children are missing?" Lucas barked over the phone. He could not believe his ears."I came here with the driver to take them home as you instructed, but they are nowhere to be found," the nanny explained.Lucas fisted his hand and banged hard on his mahogany desk, letting out a grunt as he did so."I'm on my way," he finally said as he put down the phone and rushed out of the office. The ride to the school seemed longer than usual. All the while, he was restless, wondering where his children would have gone. He had not made so many enemies in his business that would warrant him to have his children kidnapped. Thinking about it now, a lot of people did not know that he had children. Others thought of him as a divorcee. But Lucas was not a man to care about what people thought about him. He was only focused on climbing the financial ladder. A thought crossed his mind and it relaxed him. A week ago, after Claire had been discharged from the hospital and he was still
The kids turned around and to their amazement, Scarlett was standing in front of them. They quickly rushed to her and wrapped her in a warm embrace.Scarlett was elated to be reunited with them and her joy knew no bounds as she cradled them in her hands, attracting stares from passersby, but she cared less."We missed you so much," Callan said, wrapping his hands around her neck."Aww, I missed you too, my babies," Scarlett said, embracing them again."So are you here with Daddy or your new nanny?" She asked them. They fell silent and looked at each other, and back at her. Scarlett knew immediately that something was amiss."Who are you here with?" She asked them again. This time, she sounded worried."We came looking for you," Claire replied as Callan was still tongue-tied."What?!" Scarlett exclaimed as thoughts of what Lucas would do to her if he found out rummaged through her mind."We are so hungry Scarlett," Callan finally spoke out, and it softened her heart. They had just come
"Thank you so much, Scarlett," Lucas finally managed to say after some long minutes of hesitation. Scarlett could not believe her ears. The high and mighty Lucas was appreciating her. It felt surreal. She stepped into the light, and Lucas caught a full glimpse of her. He wondered if it was the same Scarlett he knew from months back. She had cleaned up well. He could not deny that she looked very elegant. The green dress that she had on hung perfectly to her luscious frame. He swallowed. He had never seen her in this way before. Even her short hair was a bonus to the change. "You are welcome, Lucas," she said in a confident tone. It was as though she was no longer intimidated by him, and she knew it hurt his ego.He took a last glance at her before he turned around to go in with his kids."Thank you, and you can go now," he said heading inside."It's late, Dad. Let Scarlett come in and spend the night," Callan said, looking from Scarlett who motioned him to keep shut, to his father wh
Scarlett decided that it would be a good option for the entire crew to return to Santorini. She had cut short their trip the last time, and when she suggested it this time, Alex was in full support. They sent out invitations and made arrangements. Scarlett added George and Daniella to the list and after the entire planning, it looked so promising.Daphne and Nick arrived the night before the trip."Left for me, I would have suggested that you both went on your honeymoon alone but since you want us in it as well, I can't decline," Daphne said as she settled in Scarlett's room. They had agreed that Daphne would spend the night with Scarlett while Nick and his brother would share a room as well. "Let's just say I wanted to do it as compensation for cutting short the trip the other time, and we all deserve a break from the cruel life we have gotten over," Scarlett said. "That reminds me," Daphne said as she took out her makeup from the dresser with some wipes. "What did Lucas say to yo
"If it's not the bride," Daphne began excitedly as she opened up the door and barged into the room where Scarlett was ready to get into her wedding dress."Daphne!" Scarlett called out as she went ahead to hug her best friend. "I thought you were not going to come anymore," she added. "Of course, you know that I will not miss your big day for anything," Daphne said. She had been a bit incapacitated the whole time of the preparations, because of the pregnancy and Nick had insisted that she stayed back and allowed the doctor to attend to her. Daniella had managed to squeeze out time out of her busy schedule and away from George who seemed obsessed with her every day. She saw the way they had their pictures all over social media, and they were equally successful chefs."Is Lucas coming?" Scarlett asked."I tried to talk to him, but he said he does not want to be here," Daphne replied."But he has signed the divorce papers already, right?" Scarlett asked. "I don't like the way he is ma
Scarlett stopped by Alex's house on her way back from a contract job. The hospital incident had taken a toll on everyone, especially Alex. He had gone into hiding, away from his house and away from his office. When his parents finally decided to give him space, they went back to Singapore along with Nick and Daphne. They all had no idea that the incident would take a toll on him that much, and Scarlett seemed to think that he was overreacting, but she could not help but think that it was all her fault. She had finally gone to Africa for the contract, but every day, she kept thinking about Alex. Raymond had urged her to enjoy herself and do her job well, but she could not help it. She called him and sent him messages every day, but he would not answer or reply. She had made a call to his housekeeper who told her the exact time he usually came back to the house. She had told him that Alex now had empty beer and whiskey bottles in his study. Scarlett knew that he was not a drunk. He ba
"What do you mean you would not carry out the procedure anymore?" Alex raged as he followed the doctor out of the surgical ward, alerting his family members. They rushed out immediately to see what was going on."Doctor Ezra, you have to give me a good explanation for all of these," he continued. The doctor stopped and turned around to face him."I think Scarlett and your mother would have a better explanation for this," he said. "I think that my work here is done," he added and walked away.Alex turned to his mother, not knowing what to expect."What is he talking about?" He asked her. His mother fidgeted a little before she finally looked up at him. "Scarlett would be in a better position to explain things to you," she said. "Can you all just stop pointing fingers and tell me what is going on?" He asked. His mother was silent. His father and Nick were as lost as he was as they were still trying to fathom what was going on, but grateful in their hearts that Alex was still alive.
Alex stepped out of the ward and his father stood up immediately after he saw him. They stood and looked at each other for a while. There was no disappointed scowl on his face to suggest that he was angry. Instead, a beautiful smile was plastered to his face. He stretched out his hands just like he would do every day after work when they were little boys. Alex rushed at his father and engaged him in a big embrace. His father patted his back gently and Alex relaxed slowly. They soon sat down at a corner and his mother came to join them."Would you want anything to eat?" She asked her husband who looked up at her with a smile."Alex teaches us every day how to love," he said to her. "Our boy is so brave," he added as he smiled at her. "I don't want to be reminded further that my son is about to have his heart out and given to someone else," she said. "Where is Nick and Daphne?" Alex asked. He had not seen them since he came out. Just Lucas sat there with his face buried in his hand
"Time for what exactly?" Lucas asked when he saw that he was the only person that did not know what was being discussed. Doctor Ezra looked back at him, but did not say anything to him, but turned around and left. Lady Abbott looked at her son Alex and tears welled up in her eyes. She went ahead to engage him in a long embrace. "Can someone tell me what is going on here?" Lucas asked again, spreading out his hands and looking around. "In case you have not noticed, Alex has decided to donate the heart for Scarlett's transplant," Daphne said to him. Lucas has become such a pain in the ass and she was equally getting irritated."What is that supposed to mean?" Alex asked with an amused expression. Daphne looked at him unbelievably. He ignored her and moved to where Alex was standing."You think that you are the hero, right?" He asked Alex. "You went behind my back to see the doctor and agree to the transplant?" He continued. "I simply did what had to be done," Alex said."But you d
Alex rushed at her immediately while Nick picked up his phone immediately to call for help. Lucas turned on his phone too so he could make a quick call to Doctor Ezra about her current situation. If there was a right time to put aside their differences and work together, it had to be now. Nick looked at Daphne as he spoke to the pilot on the phone. He saw how she was visibly trembling and he knew she was highly terrified. He went over to where she was and put a hand around her in a comforting manner, rubbing her back gently in circles so she would calm down.Once she was calm, he held her close to him. "I am sorry about this but remember the doctor said panicking will increase your blood pressure, and it's not good for the baby," he said to her. She nodded and turned around to hug him.The medical team soon arrived with a travel bus and they collected an unconscious Scarlett immediately."I called Doctor Ezra and he said we need to bring her in immediately," Lucas said as they all fi
Scarlett stretched out her hand and touched him lightly. She watched him try to put himself together properly before he turned around with a big feigned smile on his face."What are you doing out here?" He asked her calmly. "You know it's cold out here," he added. She rolled her eyes. She was tired of everyone knowing what was good for her and what was not. It was all driving her nuts and she wished that they would all just give her a break. It irritated her more because he seemed to be having his struggles but was still looking out for her like she was a priority."Why were you crying?" She asked him. He looked up at her sharply."I was not crying. I just have a cold and it has given me a runny nose, but—""Oh don't lie to me," Scarlett cautioned him. "I know what I heard."He was silent for a while as he avoided her eyes. Thoughts of what he would say to her rummaged through his mind. An idea soon occurred to him."It's about my company," he finally said. "I think we might be runni
"What did you say to her in there?" Nick asked as he took Daphne back to where they were seated initially. "Maybe if you had not rushed in there like we were planning your murder, I would have had the chance to have even a normal conversation with her," Daphne said, sounding agitated."At the end of the day, Scarlett might probably start to request answers from you guys," she continued. "You are all doing a bad job at keeping a secret," she added. Just then, Scarlett passed by and went to take her seat. "Is everything okay?" She asked Lucas. "You all came to the restroom," she added in case they had not understood why she asked."We just wanted to make sure that you were doing great," Alex was the one that answered. He stood up afterward and headed out. If he had to lie to Scarlett one more time, he might as well end up spilling the beans. He had to walk away to prevent himself from saying anything. Nick excused himself and followed after his brother. They got into another compartm
