It was a rainy night in the south of Greenville, the nights Avery Graham loved the most. Working as a barista, she soon realized that the mornings that followed the rainy nights were very profitable. The coffee shop had more customers and more customers meant more tips and Avery Graham was all about the money.
When she was thirteen years old, Avery Graham was saddled with the news of a tragic car accident that claimed the lives of both her parents. She was left with a younger sibling of eight years old to take care of. Well, for the first five years of her parents’ death, they were moved around from one aunty to another until they finally settled with Aunty Aubrey, their mother’s youngest sibling.
It wasn’t long before her need for money became apparent.
When she finished high school, she managed to take care of her brother and contribute to the household welfare by doing meager jobs like being a babysitter and dog walking.
On her eighteenth birthday, Uncle Ben, her father’s friend and senior colleague at the hospital where he worked approached Avery with documents showing that Mr Graham had been saving some money for Avery’s college education. He had always wanted Avery to become a Doctor just like him.
With the funds she received, she readily rented a small apartment for herself and Adrian putting her dreams on hold.
As time passed, Avery found herself increasingly depressed about her life, she felt frustrated that she couldn’t make her father proud of her. Growing up as a loving family unit, she was intricately close with her father, the duo were each other’s best friends, Avery adored her father.
He took her to the hospital most days, Avery therefore grew up making friends with Doctors and Nurses. She loved it, she loved their surgery coats, didn’t mind the smell of disinfectants, and she wasn’t scared of blood either.
However, her parents dying in that tragic car accident was a sudden cutback to
Avery’s life but as time passed, her dreams seemed less realistic until three years ago, she decided to start saving up money for tuition. Even if it would take her ten years, she refused to let her dreams shatter, she promised to make her father proud. “I am going to be a doctor. I just need to work hard and save a lot of money. Will it take long? Yes, but Avery you can do it” she encouraged herself, allowing the sound of the heavy rainfall to calm her. “Tomorrow morning will be quite busy, I better sleep early” she said, setting an alarm to wake up by 6am.
As she was about to settle into bed, she heard a slight opening of the door and she knew that was her brother coming home late again. She was tired of talking him off, after all his reply was always the same “Avery I’m eighteen now, treat me like an adult”. Now she just stayed up and waited for him to come back before drifting to sleep.
“Hey!” Adrian called, he sounded happy.
“What’s up?” Avery asked sitting up from the bed. Adrian sauntered in smiling mysteriously, as he sat down beside her, he brought his hands from behind “I thought you might like it.” he said smiling and handed her a book.
“What?!” Avery exclaimed excitedly. It was the new edition of her favorite comic book series. Adrian began working at a book store some weeks ago, he loved books, he was a nerd. “A.D!” she said happily, “thank you”. She added, leaning in for a hug from him, seeing this, Adrian swiftly dodged her “don’t get gross, Avery” he said sarcastically. With that, he stood up and made his way out of the room, “goodnight Avery” he said as he went out of sight.
Avery returned to the book taking a keen look at the cover, smiling sheepishly as she read the title of the book “Wish, Willow! the eighth edition.” As she stared at the book with excitement, she decided to read the book at her free time after the morning rush tomorrow. “This should be my treat after a busy morning! That’s a good plan, Avery.” She said patting herself on the back.
Shortly after, she drifted away to sleep, looking forward to tomorrow and enjoying the pleasant weather that came with the rain.
“Wake up! Wake up!!” rang the persistent voice that woke Avery up. It was Adrian.
“Your alarm has been blaring! How can you sleep through all of that noise?!” Adrian said teasing her.
“Go away” Avery chuckled, stretching and attempted to lift herself up. Thankfully, Adrian had woken her up on time, else she’d be late to the cafe. She hurried off to the bathroom.
Few minutes later, she was done, dressed in a grandpa Jean trouser and a black tank top, her blonde hair stood out perfectly contrasting with the magenta color trench coat she wore- her main reason being to keep the morning cold away more than being fashionable. Still, Avery looked beautiful and supple, her face was surprisingly younger than that of a twenty three year old. She packed up her hair in a ponytail that revealed her wide, honey-brown eyes, which complimented her plump pink lips.
By 7 45am, she was out of the house, holding her book dearly. As she arrived at the cafe, Mr Singh and Wallace were already there, Mr Sinh was her employer, the owner of the Cafe.
“Good morning Mr Singh” she greeted politely. “Hello Avery” replied the old man, with a hint of his Indian accent which never failed to make her smile. “Thank you for gracing us with your presence!” Wallace teased her.
“Back off, Wallace!”
“We already have orders, let’s get to work” Mr Sinh said interrupting their little banter.
Together, they began to pour mixtures into several take away coffee cups, while Mr Singh made shapes on the top of the coffee that were for in-house customers. An hour later, the coffee cups were all empty, office workers, doctors, students and every one who loved to start their day with coffee stopped by for a cup. Avery observed them all, wishing to one day appear in such professional roles.
The rush hour began to lessen, she had made some money from the tips. “150$” she counted, “the day is still young” she added, hoping for more customers.
Just then, a man walked in. He looked expensive and classy. His well chiseled face stood firmly like that of a model but better, he had manly stubbles spread from his jawline to his chin. His demeanor stood out, intimidating and outshining the lessened crowd. Avery stared in awe as he walked towards her “six cups of coffee to go…” he said with his head down looking into his phone. Avery was disappointed at his rude behavior, but who was she to say anything, she only hoped he tipped heavily. As she poured the fourth coffee cup, she noticed him walking out of the Cafe.
“What an a**!!” She exclaimed. How could he leave his order half done?!
The day went by quickly and it was time to go. She counted all her tips for the day; “three hundred dollars, I still have a long way to go” she soliloquized.
“Why are you contemplating about money so much?” Wallace asked interrupting her thoughts.
“I checked, admission into Bryson school of Medicine is about six thousand dollars. I need so much money” Avery replied tearfully.
“Little by little, okay? You’ll get there” Wallace said offering consolation. “Come on, it’s time to go!” With that, she arose groggily. As she packed up her bag, she realized she didn’t even get the opportunity to read her comic book.
The distance from Sinh’s Coffee shop to Avery’s house in the south of the Mainland was about thirty minutes walk but she had bought a bicycle to abate the stress. She got on her bicycle and waved goodbye to Wallace and set on her way, putting the book in the front basket of the bicycle.
She cycled back home recounting the events of the day, including the mysteriously handsome man in the morning. Avery rounded a corner still lost in thoughts of the day’s activities, she suddenly came face to face with the bumper of a black tinted glass Mercedes car. The driver of the car immediately hit the brakes as she veered off, but it was too late, she lost balance and fell, getting bruised cruelly. Avery’s heart skipped for a second as she wondered if this would be a case of a hit and run, but her doubts were cleared when the driver stepped out of the car to offer help- it was the handsome man from the cafe!
For the umpteenth time, Fredrick’s phone persistently buzzed while he was driving causing a slow irritation on his features. Fredrick Houghton was known to be strict and uptight, he was a man of principles and he genuinely believed in rules.Answering a phone call while driving was a self made rule, he loved to focus and complete a task before moving to the next one, in fact, he was a perfectionist. As the phone buzzed on Fredrick glanced at his car screen, it was his grandma. When Grandma Jojo wanted to be dramatic, she knew exactly how to do it but today’s charade was questionable. Fredrick contemplated a possible situation that could demand such pertinence, his mind swerved at the possibility of an urgent situation and he immediately went to grasp his phone, forgetting the dangers of a bending corner. Just then, he noticed a blonde figure on a bicycle almost colliding into his car, he abruptly slammed into the brakes while his opposition driver tried to veer off course to avoid the
The next day, Avery Graham set off to work, as usual Mr Sinh and Wallace were already at the Cafe. The morning rush hour began and Avery was swamped with work and deliveries. “You look different” Wallace confessed seeking back up from Mr Sinh.Avery didn’t think letting her hair loose would be much of a difference, the ponytail style was her look all the time.“Good different or bad different?” She asked curious to know significant differences in the hairstyles.“Both” Mr Sinh replied. “Bad because it’s a coffee shop Avery, cover your hair! Good because you look less troubled today. Did something good happen?” Mr Sinh added.“Not really, I got into an accident yesterday” she said sadly, remembering the events from last night.“What?! Are you hurt?”“Where did it happen?” Mr Sinh and Wallace asked simultaneously.“It wasn’t anything serious, it’s just a skinned knee. I handled it” she said shrugging it off.Mr Sinh gave Wallace a look that said “everything is not okay.” “I still thi
Fredrick Hughson observed from his rear view mirror as the displeased Avery watched him drive off. He couldn’t understand why he suddenly felt bad for leaving her, but partially he knew Avery could take care of herself.By the time Avery got home, Adrian was already waiting, he looked pale and tired. Seeing him, Avery saw the need to make this contract with Mr Hughson work. She needed more money to take care of her brother. The next day came so rapidly, Mr Sinh had told her to take some days off until she felt better. She was about to risk part of her savings to look better, after all, whatever she spent, she was going to replace it with the payment. She saw with her mind’s eyes all that she needed to change within her, beginning with her hair. Sadly, Avery wished she had a friend to go shopping with, a friend, a sister, anyone. But growing up the way she did, her only consistent friend was her brother.“what are you doing?” Adrian asked startling her from her crouching position.“Who
Grandma Jojo had outdone herself. The food she sprawled on the table was eligible to be called a feast. The entire evening, she stayed glued to Fredrick like an obsessed lover, and for the first time, Avery noticed a cheerful look on Fredrick’s grumpy face. Nei-nei was definitely the way to his heart, Avery thought. If Avery was impressed by the grandiose nature of the mansion, she was doing a good job hiding it, one thing had surely caught her attention- the portrait on the wall! It was a portrait of the younger Nei-nei and Fredrick, he looked about eight in the picture. This peaked Avery’s curiosity, “has it always been the two of them?” She looked around stealthily anticipating another portrait or a photograph of some other people in the house.“Is something wrong, darling?” Fredrick called out, startling Avery and distracting her from her contemplations.“Not at all” Avery said as she shot her million dollar smile at him.“Freddie, it seems you really like this one” Nei-nei said. O
All night Avery turned and twirled on her bed, unable to get any sleep until morning. She was anxious about meeting Fredrick, when she signed the papers, it would finalize whatever reverse chance laid between them, but she was more nervous about her brother. How could she just spring up on him that she was getting married.“The story just won’t add up!” Avery thought. She swished and wiggled like a worm on the bed, frustrated that she had to keep this a secret from Adrian. “I’m so sorry AD, it’s just this one time. Forgive me” she prayed silently. Her body finally came to rest, she allowed herself drift away in sleep, tucking her phone away.“What?! You’re getting married? Fredrick I didn’t know you were dating any one” Attorney Alex exclaimed.“There are many things you don’t know about me” Fredrick replied in the most indifferent way, concealing his fear that he might be making the most impulsive decision of his life.Last night, he didn’t think that his sudden decision to get marr
Fredrick’s phone rang noisily cutting through the thick tension that had formed in the room. He glanced at his screen, it was Nei-nei.He contemplated the welfare of his grandma and his heart instantly sank as he remembered her condition. He couldn’t afford to miss her calls anymore. He had been too busy with getting the contract ready that he forgot to check on her. As he pressed the phone to his left ear, he felt a sudden wave of guilt grip him“Nei-nei…” he muttered apologetically.“Freddie, did you get home safe? Is Avery with you? Have you met her family yet?” Grandma Jojo said in one breathe. She was particularly eager about the wedding, not just because she wanted to see Freddie get married but she had taken a liking to Avery. She really did seem virtuous and impudent- exactly the kind of woman that could contend with Fredrick, even though he hadn’t realized it yet.Grandma Jojo hoped that he realized it himself that marrying Avery was a good choice.“I’m…with them now” Fredrick
Few weeks ago, Avery and Fredrick were two strangers who met in an unfriendly encounter. To Avery, their getting married still felt surreal until she received an invitation to the most luxurious wedding dress brands in Greenville for her bridal shopping.Having to go through it alone, she had a pang of unhappiness tug on her heartstrings as she sat on the bed wishing for a friend she could share the fun experience.“If mom and dad were alive…” Avery sobbed, her voice trailed off as she spoke with her brother.“Avery, there’s no need to burden yourself with the past. Please don’t cry” Adrian held her up and wiped her tears.“Will you come with me then? I don’t want to go shopping alone” Avery said, her eyes glowing with hope as she awaited her brother’s response.“I can’t…” he replied.Adrian held his gaze down, he was sorry for disappointing his sister.“I have to go to work today. I’m covering for someone…” Adrian added sadly.“Okay then” Avery nodded. With that, Adrian gathered his
Here comes the bride, here comes the bride! boldly blared through the huge speakers of the crowded hall. The corridors of the ballroom were filled with the richest one percent of Greenville smiling from ear to ear.The air was filled with celebrations of joyous faces including that of Grandma Jojo beaming with pride. It was a sad thing that from seven hundred guests, the only faces Avery could recognize as she strolled down the aisle were Mr Sinh and Wallace from the coffee shop. She looked around, desperately searching for her brother, he was supposed to walk her down the aisle but he was nowhere to be found.Avery was troubled by his sudden disappearance but she pressed on, smiling brightly and charmingly at the guests who were enchanted by her graceful beauty. As she approached the stage, she caught sight of her groom, Fredrick. For the first time since their first meeting at the coffee shop, Avery noticed how ravishing he looked. His tailored suit hung tightly on his body, making
The next morning in the large mansion at White Avenue was quite a whirlwind.“Can’t you stay for a bit? Say two more weeks?” Avery sighed softly.Margaret and Adrian chuckled wryly,“I don’t want to go neither” Margaret replied.“But I have to…”“My fiancé needs me” she added, extending her arms so that Avery and Adrian would see her diamond ring.Avery rolled her eyes and pouted slightly,“You can have a fiancé and still stay here… don’t leave me!” Avery cried. Her cries were so outrightly falling on deaf ears because, as Alex emerged from the hallway with bags in hand, followed by Fredrick, Margaret leaped towards him,“Hi there, my fiancé” she squealed excitedly, hanging on her husband’s arm. Avery shook her head playfully, and gestures to her husband too.“I guess it’s just us from now on...”“I know so..” Fredrick replied.“Invite us to the wedding, if you please” he added.Alex nodded agreeably,“That definitely, you won’t miss.”Turning to Adrian, he laid his free hand on his s
EIGHT WEEKS LATERThe most expensive hotel in Greenville opened its ballroom doors to a vast number of guests trooping in. “The Right Wedding of The Hughsons” Fredrick insisted on calling their second wedding that.Of course, Alex was his Best man.“I’m delighted to be ministering at my best friend’s second wedding- to the same person, don’t get me wrong…” Gary said, taking the microphone as the MC of the occasion.Avery was beautifully dressed in the wedding gown Nei-Nei had gifted her, but this time, it was adorned with tiny diamonds, making her glow in the spotlight. Her blonde hair was straightened out and tied in a bun behind her head. Soon, the keyboardist made a procession of the most popular bride song in the world; announcing the arrival of Mrs Hughson.“Here comes the bride, here comes the bride…” The rows and expensive chairs of the ballroom filled with the richest one percent of Greenville, rose in a standing ovation of the prettiest wife ever.Avery scanned the room a
Fredrick sighed, frustration in his voice as he scolded his brother“It baffles me that the first person you went to ask for help from is someone who abandoned you years ago.” “And Aiden will be saying those same words to Adele some time in the future if you two don’t figure yourselves out.” Noah riposted with a smirk etched on his face.Margaret chimed in her voice feeble and weary,“You’re being really annoying right now, Noah.” “You should apologize for the distress you caused everyone of us here.”Tears welled up in her eyes as she whispered, “I defended you blindly, and it hurts so much…”“No, no! Don’t cry, Mag” Noah said, wrapping his arms around his sister.“I’m sorry.” He apologized, his eyes brimming with regret.Alex, indignant, removed his hands from Margaret, replacing them with his own.“I’m sorry, please don’t cry… I love you” he whispered, gently patting her back.“You didn’t defend me blindly, you defended me rightfully.” Noah continued.“I wouldn’t dare kidnap any
“Noah!” A voice called from behind him as he stepped into the five-star restaurant. Swiftly, he pivoted his head to the direction of the voice and came face to face with face so strangely familiar. “You asked to see me…?” “Please sit down…”Noah scanned the room suspiciously before settling at the table.“Waiter!” “No! I’d rather not…” Adrian interjected,“Why? I can’t let you watch while I eat” lovely smiled awkwardly.“Fine, I’ll take a cup of coffee. Thank you” he replied. The waiter laid a cup of espresso on the table for Noah and a glass of freshly squeezed apple juice for Lovelyn.“Thank you, Meredith” she muttered to the waitress.“How long are you planning to stay in a hotel?” Noah asked, a hint of disapproval in his tone.Lovelyn grimaced uncertainly, “Why did you want to see?”“I’ll go straight to the point. I need your help.” Noah replied.Lovelyn shifted uncomfortably on her seat, unable to contain her excitement.“I never thought this day would come” she smiled warm
Fredrick woke up to the sound screeching chairs and creaking doors piercing loudly into his hearing. He groaned miserably and snuggled into his sheets, unable to bring himself to witness Avery’s departure, especially after his charade last night, he had regretted announcing their divorce and end of contract at the table. He had breached their contract and if Avery wanted, she could take him to court and sue him for damages- after all, the contract was to be done and resolved confidentially, in order to protect each other from prying ears.He shuddered unbelievably as last night replayed in his mind,“Why did I do that?!” “Alex hates me, I’m sure of it” he thought aloud.Suddenly, a thunderous bang sounded on his door, jolting up from the bed instantly. The thudding persisted urgently, without as much as a pause,“Don’t break down the door, I’m coming!” He thundered, hurrying towards the door. Before he could pull the door open himself, the outsider had pushed it open and let himsel
Ivy turned down the volume of the soft music on her phone to hear the approaching footsteps clearly. As Ivy strained to listen, the muffled thuds grew louder, echoing through the quiet hall way.She took a quick glance at her phone’s screen which displayed the time as 1 in the morning. It struck her as rather alarming and unexpected that at this late hour, people were not only awake, but also strolling around the neighborhood.“But this is Greenville” she told herself, shrugging it off as she turned the next page of the novel she was reading.Just then, the approaching footsteps stopped in front of her door, accompanied by a knock. Panic surged through her as she held her breath, silently praying the unknown person away. The knocking persisted, this time, a bit louder than before. With trembling hands, Ivy advanced to the door, her voice quivering with anxiety as she muttered,“Please, whoever you are, go away!”“Ivy!” Adrian replied,A rush if emotions coursed through her as she he
Avery drove into the mansion that had been her home for the past one year, her heart wrenching and aching badly at the sight of the man she loved dearly drowning himself in alcohol. Fredrick had readily signed their contract termination papers two days ago.It felt surreal their contract was really over, and she had a week to leave the mansion. As she stepped out of her car, her heart sank at the sight of him sitting absentmindedly in the garden, taking no notice of the car that drove into his compound.“Hey, Avery!” Margaret squealed, startling her from the wrenching sight she was engrossed in.“Hey Mag” Avery replied, forcing a smile.“Fredrick has been like that for days” Margaret said, observing her gaze.“Is something wrong? I’m worried, even Alex is drinking.”“I… don’t know…” Avery stuttered, her voice trembling with inexplicable emotions. She was the one leaving him, but she was the one crying, she couldn’t understand herself.“Are you okay, Avery? You don’t look good either”
Avery’s phone rang persistently, dividing her attention from the crying babies she was trying to tame.Noah walked into the house, just arriving from school, sensing the chaos in the house, he hurried to the direction of the cries where he found Avery, clutching her phone to her ear.“Can you check on them, please?” She pleaded, grimacing apologetically.Noah quickly nodded, making his way to them.“Okay, Uncle Noah is back and he wants absolute silence!” Noah exclaimed, his voice a little higher than theirs. Surprisingly, as if they understood his command, they gradually quietened.“How did you do that?!” Avery gasped in relief as she re-entered the room. “They’ve been so troublesome today.” She added.Noah turned to face her, a wide grin played on his face, beaming proudly,“Of course, they’ll listen to their uncle. It’s just how it is…” he smiled.Avery nodded sheepishly, grateful for the peace in the house.“If you don’t mind, uncle Noah, can you spend some more time with them? I
Just as Alex had advised, Adrian arrived at the cafe and it was already booming. His regular customers were already served breakfast. The idea to add more food to the menu was a good one, their sales were gradually growing by the day and Adrian gave Ivy credit for it everyday. He scanned the room desperately, looking for a red head in the crowd, his heart racing as he scanned through the bustling crowd, searching from face to face for Ivy.Amidst the chaos, he finally spotted her. She was standing near the bar, her red hair sprawled over her back as she drifted seamlessly across the room, going from one table to the other to take their order.“It was a mistake…” Adrian muttered to himself. He head been practicing the same lines on the drive down here, but as soon his gaze fell on the fiery head in the distance, the tingles of her warm lips on him shook him to nervousness.“Adrian!” A voice called from behind, snapping him out of his reverie. As he turned around, his eyes met with the
