Chapter 1- Introduction
"I think I found the perfect dress, Mom!" I Call softly across the store as I gently caress the burgundy silk fabric occupying my body. "Oh, Briar, that is stunning!" She gasps when she comes into view. Looking back into the floor-length mirror, I admire myself. I have always loved myself; never have I been one to second guess the looks of my body. Every curve and dip that most would hate, I adore. It makes me feel like I am my own unique person, and I am stronger for it. Mom gently pulls the clip from my hair, and I watch as my long curls fall around my body. My hair is long, and it takes me over an hour in the morning to curl it how I like. That is one thing I do to ensure I care for my hair. I love everything about my long brown hair, everything but sitting on it.
A long whistle comes from beside me. "Briar, if you buy that dress, every available wolf will fall at your feet." Devin coos as he moves closer to my side, wraps his arm around my waist and pulls me to his side. "Now that is a perfect picture, don't you think?" He asks as he looks us up and down in the mirror. He has on the suit I presume he will be wearing for our prom this weekend, and he is gorgeous. "Oh, hello, Luna Mindy. It is wonderful to see you. You are looking radiant as always." He speaks so smoothly as he takes my mother's hand in his, then kisses the back of her hand ever so gently. "It is good to see you as well, Devin. Who will have the pleasure of being on your arm for Prom?"
Her words do not get lost in my ears. She knows exactly what she is doing, and I shoot her a look that pleads with her to stop talking. "My mother has asked me to accompany Omega Megan's daughter, Judith, to prom. I did not have the heart to tell my mother or Judith no. Judith is a wonderful young wolf, and I am lucky to be accompanied by such a brilliant young lady." Mom's eyes light up with pride hearing him speak so highly of an Omega. Hearing any beta speak highly of a lower rank, especially younger wolves within our pack, is rare. "That is one of the nicest things I have ever heard. You are truly a spectacular young man, Devin. I will leave you two to talk." Her words are sweet, touched with pride. "Briar, when you are ready, I will be upfront, and I will meet with you to pay for your dress." She nods and walks away quickly, giving us time to speak alone.
"You look smoking in that dress!" Devin immediately states as he moves closer to inspect me. "It is a beautiful dress, isn't it?" I ask as he takes my hand and twirls me in a circle. "I would say so." He states before leaning on the back of a sitting couch closest to me. "Who is getting the privilege to bring you to prom?" "I have decided I am just going to go with some friends. I don't want to risk letting anyone down if I find my mate. I turn 18 that day, and that last thing I want to do is have to apologize to someone the day after for running off on them." I shrug.
It is a lie. I hate lying to Devin, but I cannot tell him I have been in love with him since the 6th grade and no one else could compare to his company. He is my best friend, and I know he would be kind about turning me down, but I cannot take that heartache. "You are welcome to be my second date, and you can run off with your mate if he is there. I promise I won't ask for an apology from you." He suggests. "That's a nice offer, but I won't do that to Judith. She is a nice girl.” "Yeah, she is. Too bad she is ranked so low; she doesn't deserve that.” "A rank doesn't always determine your life. There have been rumors that an Omega was mated to an alpha.” "Says the Alpha's Daughter." He laughs. "Yeah, but I am not Alpha mate material. A Beta or even a Gamma is more my speed. You know this. I rather take orders, not give them.” "Your mom doesn't give orders. Don't you think you could be like your mom? Kind, caring, tentative, and always available to anyone in the pack which needs a listening ear. I think you very well could do the job.” "I could, but if I were mated to an Alpha, I would have to leave Blood Water Pack. That is not something that I want to do." I shrug.
A call on Devin's phone from his mother brings our conversation to a screeching halt. "Your dad called a meeting. We have to get changed and go." The words are just out of his mouth when my mom approaches us. Her face has lost all color to it. "We need to leave. Now. Change. Hurry." She demands before pushing Devin off in the direction of the changing room. "You will ride with us, Devin!" I hear her call as I quickly pull on my shorts and tank top.
"What is going on, Mom?" I ask her as I rush out of the changing room, dress in hand. "Let’s buy this as we wait for Devin. I will explain in the car.” Her worried look has me internally freaking out. Others look at my mom and see that she is calm and collected. Not me; I can see all of her tells. Being her daughter is the biggest reason, but reading body language is one of my most significant gifts. Something is incredibly wrong.
After buying the dress, we walk to the front of the store and hear Devin’s feet falling at a jog to catch up to us. “Ready?” Mom asks him, giving him a look that says he has no other answer besides ‘Yes.’ “Ready.” He confirms, and we follow her at a quick but not panicked pace from the mall. “Want to tell us what is going on?” I whisper when we get outside. “Human’s dear.” She whispers back to me as her head whips from side to side scanning our surroundings. We are still within our territory, but something has her so shaken that she is doing surveillance sweeps continuously.
A black suburban screeches into the parking lot with Beta Gary, Devin’s dad, and other Betas. “Mom?” Fear floods me as I recognize the beginning steps of what precautions are for war. “In the car, dear.” Her words are strained. “Mindy, we are here to escort you back to the house.” Betta Gary’s voice is on edge as he looks around the parking lot to see humans looking. “Shall I follow in my car or ride with you?” She asks, calmer than she was before. “Not enough room. Devin and I will ride with you and Briar back home. They can follow if that is acceptable?” Beta Gary had already gotten out of the car and begun walking alongside mom before she could answer him. I feel Devin’s hand slip into mine and squeeze, drawing my attention to him. “This is bad.” Fear radiates off him. Right then and there, I decided to be strong for him now. “We will be just fine. Come on, let’s catch up.” I smile softly and pull him by the hand at a slow jog to catch up to our parents.
I don’t release Devin’s hand until we are safely in the car. We are quiet as Mom quickly drives away from the mall, the suburban behind us at a safe distance. As the town leaves our view, I finally lean forward and ask. “What is happening?” Beta Gary looks at Mom. “Sweetheart, something bad has happened. Your father wants to announce it, but I feel the two of you should now know what is happening. It would be best to have your head cool and collected when it is announced. We will need the pair of you to help us keep everyone under control and not go into a full panic. A panicked wolf is a wolf that can be killed. Do you agree, Gary?” “I agree, Mindy.” Beta Gary surprises me by using my mother’s name so casually.
“You have to promise me that you two will not say a word to anyone. If the Alpha finds out that I told you and you let it slip.” Her words stop, her body tenses, and I can see the whites of her eyes in the rearview mirror. “Would he kill us?” Devin asks just above a whisper. “Yes, son, he would. If you let this slip, there would be no saving either of you.” Beta Gary states. “You have my word; I will not repeat anything said within this car,” Devin announces. “You have my word as well.” I grip Mom’s shoulder, trying to comfort her slightly in whatever she must tell us.
I watch as she takes steady breaths and slows to the standard speed limit. “We have just gotten a letter from Execution Bay Pack.” Her words are forced. “Isn’t that the Lycan pack?” I confirm. “It is.” Beta Gary clarifies. “What do they want?” Devin questions. Looking up, I see Mom staring at me in the mirror. “Briar, Devin, they have captured our king and threatening to kill him if we do not do exactly what they say.” Mom’s words feel like a sharp knife stabbing into my gut. “How?”
I whisper. “He had a spy within his walls. He was drugged and brought to the Execution Bay Pack that same night.” “How do you know that for sure?” I demand. “Because it was in the letter. They told us exactly what they did and will do next. We are not safe. We are being watched, and they have people within our territory. We cannot smell them; we cannot recognize them. I have no idea who they are.” I watch as tears begin rolling down her face. “I have no idea how to keep you all safe right now. All I know is that you are all at risk and that I cannot do anything to help right now.” She weeps as she drives.
The rest of the ride is silent. There is nothing we can do. We know our King has been taken, and we know that they are making demands. What that all entails is another story. For now, I must be strong. Put aside my feelings about the situation, and put on a solid persona for my pack. I can cry and panic at my 3 am personal dilemma hour. I gave myself time to deal with all the issues that I couldn’t deal with, and I just had to push aside to be strong for others—time for me to allow my emotions to be felt.
Pulling into the packhouse parking lot, I can feel the energy shift. Everyone is on edge as they enter the packhouse. A mansion is more like it; a packhouse sounds small compared to our home. It has over 40 bedrooms, each containing its own bathroom. We collectively utilize the massive kitchen. The front door opens into an enormous ballroom. Above the ballroom hosts an orchestra Pit. Where the conductor would stand is the location my dad, or any Alpha of the pack, would stand for pack meetings. So he could be heard and seen by all.
“Thank you all for joining me.” His voice sounds different. I think to myself as I look around at the people nearest me. They all have the same facial expressions, that how their Alpha speaks seems uncharacteristic of how he typically presents himself. “Before I begin, I would like to introduce you to Beta Brett of the Execution Bay Pack. I am sure all of you will join me in welcoming him to our pack and assist in any way we can if he needs anything during his stay. Welcome, Betta Brett.” Everyone falls in line instantly and welcomes Beta Bret and claps for him.
“Thank you for that warm welcome. However, I am not here for pleasure. I would like all of you to continue your daily activities as though I am not here. Your Alpha and I have some business to discuss, and I hope to be out of your hair as quickly as I have come. I have a pup on the way and wish not to be separated from my mate for longer than I must be. So I bid you all a good day.” He holds his hand in the air and walks away from my father.
After a moment, my father steps forward again. “I will be in a meeting for some time. If you have any questions, please direct them to Luna Mindy.” He bows deeply to all of us and points to my mother. She immediately holds her hand in the air and signals us to go outside quietly, which we all obey immediately.
Chapter 2- Fear of the uninvited guest We all congregate on the training field. It is far enough away from anyone who could be listening. “As you can tell, we have a Lycan in the packhouse. This is no secret. I was unaware of his arrival until just now as well.” She takes a deep breath before continuing. “There are some things I need to tell you that your Alpha has shared with me. The first thing I need from all of you is not to panic. It would seem as though this current situation is a good thing. If the Beta can view us as not a threat, or a pack that needs to be dismissed, he should leave sooner. Please do not give him any reason to look into what we do here. Do not train harder, and do not fight with each other. Hold in any grudges you may have against your best friend. Now is not the time to execute revenge for taking the last pancake. Deal with it.” “Why is it so important to walk a tightrope while he is here?”A snide Omega interrupts. “Because we have no one wh
Chapter 3 – Overstepping BoundariesMy ears are pumping with blood, and my heart is beating faster than ever. This is it, and this is how I die, I think to myself. “Please stand.” The Beta requests me, and I do so immediately, still looking down at the floor. “Briar?” He calls to me softly. Everyone’s eyes are locked on what I assume will be my death. “Yes, Sir?” I whisper back as my eyes lift to meet his. “That was the bravest and the truest thing I have heard since I have been on your pack lands. You told me exactly what you want and what lengths you will go to keep your pack safe.” I stand speechless, watching him as he speaks to me. “Seeing as you want to use tonight as a memory for your future children, I will give you one more thing to add.” “What is that?” I ask. “I am leaving. What I have come here to discuss will be, we will call it an extension for now. In the meantime, I want you to sit down with your father and discuss with him what plans you can come up with.” “Why would
Chapter 4- PromThe days fly by, and I wake up on Saturday, the day of my high school Prom. I haven’t talked to Devin since the night of the dinner. Mainly because I have been avoiding him, I stand calmly looking at myself in the mirror and cannot help but smile. “Tonight, at midnight, I will know if Devin is my mate.” I can feel myself getting more excited with every passing moment. I run downstairs to find Mom cooking my favorite meal, French toast and bacon. Everyone else thinks I am insane for not eating a big hardy breakfast, but I like what I like. “Morning, Mom!” I call as I sit on the island stool and watch her cook. “Morning, Briar! Did you sleep well?” She asks, giving me a knowing look. “Better than I had originally thought.” “If you find your mate tonight, I need you to text me to let me know if you go anywhere with him, ok?” She makes me promise. “Name, address, rank, pack he belongs to. Nothing will go unanswered.” I agree. My biggest hope is that it will
Chapter 5- A Night with a new friend. I can feel my world shatter as Devin releases me and rushes into the arms of Rebecca, the one female in our pack that I hate the most. I watch in disbelief as my heart contracts in pain. My stomach begins to hurt, and tears spring to my eyes. “Briar, are you OK?” Judith’s sweet voice calls from behind me. “Hey, Judith. I was going to come to find you and let you know that Devin found his mate.” I try to sound confident and apologetic that it has happened, but I simply cannot. My heart is broken. Judith looks over my shoulder, seeing the pair embrace, frowns, then looks back at me. “Of all people, why her?” She asks. “It doesn’t matter now, does it? Such a wonderful guy with such a horrible-mannered girl.” I shake my head. Per usual, the sound of midnight rings through the room. The last chime brings a scent of unbearable sweetness, much like standing in a candy shop with fans blowing all the different sugar sweets i
Chapter 6- Loss of a Friend“The bitch hit me,” Rebecca speaks without realizing precisely who questioned us. “Check your tone.” He growls at her. As he steps toward her, Devin body blocks him from Rebecca. “Get out of my way, Devin.” Dad demands. “She is my Mate, Alpha.” He pleads as tears roll down his face. My heart breaks for him as I see the fear in his eyes that my dad may hurt her for disrespecting him. “Dad?” I call softly. “I want an explanation right now.” He demands, looking at us each momentarily before moving on to the next. I start speaking first. “I was finishing washing up the dishes when they came in. Devin wished to speak to me privately, but Rebecca said no. I suggested talking to him later today. When I went to leave, she said.” I stop and decide that no matter what I say right now, I will lose Devin as a friend forever. “Go on, Briar.” Dad urges softly. “She told me, and I quote. You are nothing more than a worthless piece of wolf hide. You deserve
Chapter 7- Doctor appointment I sit on my couch and pull my dad to sit with me. “I don’t know where that Alpha tone came from tonight,” I admit. “I didn’t even know that it was possible.” I continue. “Sweetheart, that is not something I want you to start using on a whim.” “I understand that, Dad. What happened tonight is not something that I had ever expected to do or say. The whole night was just a mess. I hope that after some sleep and a clear mind, I will have more of a handle on everything.” I confess. “How you moved tonight and how you grabbed the girl, that is so unlike you. You even hit her tonight. Are you ok?” His concern is evident in his voice. “I wish I could tell you one way or another. But since midnight, everything seems different. As I said, maybe sleep and a clear mind will help. I agree with your statement earlier, and I think I need to see the Doctor as soon as possible to clear up anything if something is wrong. Is that ok still?” I question him. “W
Chapter 8- Party I unzip the garment bag and find a burgundy tank top, knee-length dress in my signature color. It is stunning. I pull my clothes off and change quickly into the gown without another thought. I already know my mate won’t be here tonight, so I don’t pay any extra attention to my looks. I allow my hair to fall like normal and clean up my makeup from the day. Mom paired my dress with flats instead of heels, and I am grateful as I step into them and do not have to concentrate on whether I will fall. I place my gift for Judith in my bag and head out of my room. I walk halfway down the stairs and instantly feel sick from the smell. “This way, Briar!” Judith calls me from the bottom of the steps and bounds towards me, leading me back upstairs, away from the smell. “How am I going to get through this?” I ask her. “Here, I bought these in town this morning.” She hands me a small box secured by shrink wrap. “What is it?” I ask, opening the box to
Chapter 9- Hidden FriendsEveryone is shocked when they see two cakes come out of the kitchen. Dad makes an announcement stating that we had all missed an essential member of the pack's big day and that I have elected to share my big day with her. Judith cried; everyone realized that she was ignored for so long; it was a huge ordeal. I slunk into the shadows and decided a walk alone in the woods was a more excellent gift than being stuck with the pack for any longer. “What is wrong with me?” I ask myself as I kick a nearby stick with anger. My anger has grown exponentially since midnight, and I am starting to feel the anger take root within me. “What are you doing outside of your territory, little one?” A soft voice calls to me. Taking count of where I am, I realize that I blacked out and have crossed all our territory and border. “Who are you?” I ask, calmer than I had expected to sound. Sniffing the air, I try and catch his scent but only find the faint smell of the
Chapter 88- Our Wedding My song starts, and I walk to where Matt is standing. "Ready?" "Ready." I loop my arm through Matts, allowing him to lead me out for everyone to see me. Everyone is standing, and I can see tears running down the pack members' faces as I walk to the end of the aisle and stop. Onyx waits with his back turned toward me until Aiden taps his shoulder when I reach the end of the aisle. When Onyx turns around, his emotions take over, and he begins to cry as his eyes roam my body. The walk to Onyx feels like the longest walk of my life. When we reach him, Onyx growls at Matt, and everyone laughs. "Dude, I am giving her to you. I am no threat." He laughs before patting his shoulder and walking to his place behind Brett in the groom's line. I cannot recall half of the things I am asked to repeat. All I can see is Onyx looking back at me. When the officiate finally announces that Onyx may kiss his bride, I am not prepared to
Chapter 87- Pawning off my Alpha Status As predicted, the box is filled with votes for Devin. The answers are overwhelming, from being trustworthy to how it shows a person can change for the better. I close the box and decide to think about it in the bathtub. My water has turned warm when my mind flutters to the letter that Devin had written me months ago, and I stumble across the bathroom as I dry off and make my way to the dresser drawer Onyx had placed it in, along with the ridiculous clay wolf that has two tails and five legs. I carry the letter back into my closet with me as I read. It is filled with promises I would have doubted he could accomplish had I read this letter when he gave it to me. The last lines make me reread it. “Thank you for not ending my life when you should have. To this day, I am unsure if you made the right decision, but I will live my life to the fullest from here on out. If I find my second chance, mate, I promise to act bet
Chapter 86- The Night before the weddingHe closes his eyes and takes a deep breath before saying, “Like fresh-cut carnations at a waterfall.” I know instantly who he is talking about, and I smile. “I know who she is. I will escort her to your room. You get cleaned up from your traveling, and I will hunt her down and bring her to you.” I announce as I stand. “You would do that for me?” “I am going to do that for you. This mate, she is a good one. Gave me one of my favorite gifts.” I announce as I lift the papers and walk out of the room. “Hustle, Devin!” I call him, and he finally gets up and runs back to his room through the halls.I walk down to the laundry and find Morgan folding a bedsheet. “There you are. I have been looking for you.” I smile happily as she lifts her eyes to mine. “Luna, welcome home.” She bows. “How can I be of service?” She questions as she approaches me. “Smell me.” I request. “I am sorry?” “Smell me. What do you smell?” I ask her a second time. This time she
Chapter 85- Going homeThe words tumble from my mouth before I can stop them. “Really?” He asks excitedly. “Yes, really.” “So the wedding isn’t fully off?” He asks as he lifts me in the air and swings me around in a circle kissing the place he marked me. “No, it never was completely off, seeing as we never set an actual date. Plus, May needs to know styles and ideas now if the dress would be ready by spring.” I shrug. “Go have fun. Call me if you need me.” He insists. “Will do. Oh, before I go, I asked Holly to be our full-time traveling Nanny. I think she will say yes, don’t scare her off. She loves our kids and will show them love no matter what. That is important to me. I know the elders said that the Nannies must not show love to our kids because they want our kids to only recognize love from us, but I want them to know love from everyone. Our world has too much hatred to take away any extra love.” “Give her a raise, got it.” He kisses me again before we leave him standing alone i
Chapter 84 – Alpha announcement **Warning Sexual content**I quickly push myself onto the bed and onto our pillows as Onyx takes a second to cool down. “Bare with me for a moment, Briar. Right now, I feel more like an animal than anything else.” “Tonight, that is what I want,” I demand of him as I open my legs wide, inviting him to come to my wet core. “I don’t think you know what you are asking for.” His gruff tone turns me on more. “Please, Onyx,” I call out to him as my left-hand squeezes my breast and my right-hand moves to my core. “Briar.” He warns as my fingers swirl around my wet opening. “Onyx,” I call out as I plunge my fingers in and out of me rapidly. “My turn.” He growls as he holds my hand still. “Then do it,” I challenge him. The color of his eyes flicker, and I can see the primal urge to take me now, fighting against his will. “Take me, now,” I demand of him. It takes no further instruction as he slams his thick length into me and stills. “Yes!” I screa
Chapter 83 - A night out“Of course.” I leave Judith and Holly to watch the slumbering babies and enter our room. He closes the door behind me before turning to face me. “I talked to Judith and Doctor Adams; they have helped me understand where you are coming from and why what I did, came across so negatively. I wish never to impact your life so negatively ever again. I was not aware of the fact that I was stepping away from my responsibilities as a father. For me, I thought I was lessening the risk of having fights from stress. I am truly sorry, and I give you my word, as your mate and Alpha, that I will not do that ever again consciously. Helping a pack member periodically, and with notice to you after ensuring all is ok, will be something different.” His words seem honest, and I have never seen him go back on his word. “Briar, tonight, if you wish, I will watch over the children, and you and Judith can have a night out on the town. Take the time to relax and enjoy your time togeth
Chapter 82- Do the right thing The prison guard leads the prisoner out to a bar in the middle of the Execution grounds and ties his hands to the bar, my eyes never leaving him. “Luna Briar, the kill is yours,” Judith announces loudly before stepping away. My anger builds within me. I allow every word that Onyx has said to me and hasn’t spoken to fill my rage. Then, I think of the five women that must have been terrified under this man's disgusting hand. I move forward and feel my body shifting into my Lycan form. The ground sinks slightly with every step that I take. I can see him struggling and pulling at his ropes as I approach. His voice is muffled as he pleads for mercy. I am feet from him when he hides his head under his arm, a position I could see that any woman would have placed herself in. As rage tears through me, I calm my mind and make nine deep cuts into his skin, enough to be painful but not kill him. I step away and turn my attention to th
Chapter 81- Alpha challenge My father walks in as Judith is in the middle of reading my paper. “What the hell is she doing reading Briar’s paper? She is nothing more than a pathetic Omega who knows nothing. This is rigged!” He demands as hatred fills his words. Aiden takes one swing at my father and connects to his jaw hard. My father falls to the ground holding his face. “Explain yourself!” My father tries to Alpha-tone the King. “You will never speak to your Queen in such a manner!” Aiden growls at him as his foot shoves him to the ground again as he tries to get up. “Queen? There is no way. I would have known.” He spits in disbelief which earns him a kick to the face. “By disrespecting the Queen, you disrespect me. Would you like to be disqualified right now?” Aiden demands in his Alpha Tone that make everyone shiver. “No.” He whispers, not leaving the ground. Aiden looks back at an unphased Judith. “Whenever you are ready, my love.” He smiles as he
Chapter 80 – Trouble in Paradise Onyx struggles to pull the heavy door open. “Please, Luna. I will do anything you ask. Please don’t execute me.” He pleads. “You only care about your life, and you do not care about those around you. You knew you were swiping at me while fighting with Matt.” “I thought you were Clara! I didn’t know you could shift. I thought that I missed her and got you. When I turned around, I saw you on the ground and Clara at your side.” “You would have killed me thinking that I was Clara?” I demand of him in my Alpha tone. “I would have. I am sorry.” “Why would you have gone after Clara?” I demand. “With her gone, it would be easier to sway you to come with me.” “Go with you were?” “Home. I would take you on as my new mate, where you deserve to be.” “You think for one second that I would willingly take my children and go with you after you have killed everyone I love?” “No, just you. Your children were never part of the plan to come. They would hav
