(Katelyn's POV)

The house was too quiet.

I had paced the living room so many times that I was pretty sure I’d worn a groove into the hardwood floor. Outside, the sky had faded into shades of amber and lavender as dusk crept in, and still, Ryder and Tyler weren’t back.

When Tyler had messaged me earlier to say he’d found Ryder, I had felt relief wash over me, but it was short-lived. Found him where? Doing what? Had he said anything? No, Tyler’s message was frustratingly vague, and if I hadn’t been worried sick all day, I might have been annoyed.

But now, with every passing minute, my anxiety was back in full force. I glanced down to check the time on my phone again and to see if maybe there was a new message, even though I knew there wasn't. There had been no notification sound and upon checking the time, it was confirmed that not even a minute had passed since I last checked.

This was so frustrating and the seconds seemed to tick by with the most obnoxious lack of urgency.

(Ryder's POV)I sat at the desk in my studio, one leg bouncing with restless energy as I stared at the clutter of notebooks, picks, and tangled wires. One of my guitars was propped up against the wall just behind me, a silent reminder of the hours I’d spent in here, chasing riffs and mixing sounds while everything else just faded into the background. But tonight, the space felt different. Heavier.Dinner had been… a lot. We'd been having dinner together a lot more than usual these days, and Mom had insisted on cooking. Her skills in the kitchen were limited, to say the least, but she had given it her best shot and while her meatloaf was nowhere near as good as Shelly's, we all appreciated her efforts and could see that she was trying to anchor the family together. The family dinner also gave me the perfect opportunity to let Mom and Dad know about my little change of heart. As expected, Mom had cried, leaping up in the middle of dinner and insisting on a hug as she wiped tears from he

(Ryder's POV)Kate’s fingers were in my hair, threading gently through the strands as she held me close. Her touch was soft, grounding in a way I couldn’t quite describe. The weight I’d been carrying, for days... for years... felt lighter when she was near.I let out a soft sigh, tilting my head to look up at her as her hands shifted, one cupping my cheek. Her eyes were soft and full of something I couldn’t quite put my finger on. Pride? Adoration? Love? Whatever it was, it was enough to make my chest ache in a way I'd never felt before. My gaze dropped to her hands, her fingers, slender and steady. Before I could think too hard about it I asked, “So, how’s the moving-shit-with-your-mind thing coming along?”Her fingers froze, and I immediately regretted asking. She pulled back slightly, her expression shifting into something more guarded. “It’s… it's not,” she admitted, her tone ringing with frustration.“Not?” I echoed, raising an eyebrow.Kate sighed, folding her arms over her ches

(Ryder's POV)"These need to go," Kate whispered, her hand still caressing my throbbing member through my pants.I couldn't agree more, they felt like a fucking prison, but I had other plans."No, this needs to go," I replied, reaching down and tugging at the hem of her t-shirt.She sat up slightly as I pulled the shirt up over her head, tossing it aside carelessly as I kissed her.I held her body against mine, her skin soft and warm as she melted into me. My hands traced her curves, committing every inch of her to memory. Her body tensed as my hand wandered up her thigh, her anticipation building before she gasped against my lips as I trailed an eager finger between her folds. She was wet and hot and ready to take anything I had to give her, which only made me want her even more. Her arms were wrapped around my neck and her grip tightened as my fingers returned, this time sliding them into her depths. She moaned softly, her legs parting carelessly as she offered herself to me.I wante

(Katelyn's POV)Morning sunlight filtered through the curtains, painting soft, golden patterns on the walls. I stirred, blinking slowly as my eyes adjusted to the light. The warmth against my back was familiar, as was the face that hovered only inches from my own. There was an arm draped loosely over my waist and another on my hip. I wasn't certain whose was whose at this point, not that it mattered. All that I knew was that it felt good here, sandwiched between their warm bodies.I didn't want to move. I didn't want to disturb the perfect moment, so I stayed still, listening to their rhythmic breathing while I just wallowed in the warmth that surrounded me.I could have stayed there all day, but, of course, reality had other plans for me.It had probably been only ten minutes when my phone buzzed loudly on the nightstand beside the bed, shattering the silence and eliciting a chorus of groans on either side of me.“Jesus,” Ryder grumbled from behind me, his voice rough with sleep.“So

(Katelyn's POV)I stared at the phone screen, Helen’s name glowing back at me like it was daring me to press the button. My finger hovered over “Call” for far longer than I cared to admit.Jesus Christ, just fucking do it, Kate! You're making this so much worse than it needs to be! I scolded myself. With a deep breath, I pressed the button and brought the phone to my ear. The dial tone stretched out endlessly before Helen’s familiar voice finally answered.“Katelyn. Thanks for calling,” she greeted warmly, but there was an underlying tension in her voice that made my chest tighten.“Hi, Helen,” I said, trying to keep my tone casual, even though my anxiety levels were well through the roof by this point. “You said I should call you?”“Yes,” she replied, her tone shifting to something more serious. “I... I wanted to give you a heads-up before anything official comes through. The Council has been deliberating, and… well, it’s looking more and more likely that they’re going to ask you to

(Katelyn's POV)Tyler had left the room to take a call from his dad about some pack stuff, leaving Ryder and me on our own.I was curled up on the sofa beside him, my mind still focused on my conversation with Helen as I wondered when they were going to call me in.One of Ryder's arms was wrapped around me, while his other hand held mine, his fingers gently stroking over my knuckles as they rested in my lap. Every now and again he would press a gentle kiss to my temple and whisper how much he loves me.I'd be lying if I said I wasn't enjoying it. I felt loved and appreciated and important, but at the same time, there was absolutely no denying that he seemed to be a lot more affectionate than usual and I began to wonder what was going on. I wasn't sure whether I should say something about it or just let it play out.Eventually, my curiosity got the best of me."Not that I'm complaining, but you seem to be in a very loving mood today," I murmured softly after he trailed another volley o

(Ryder's POV)Tyler had disappeared, a serious look on his face as he spoke to Dad on the phone. I was going to have to stop whatever I was busy with to attend to pack business. The thought filled me with dread, but at the same time, it didn't feel wrong.Kate leaned into me, her head resting on my shoulder, her hair brushing softly against my neck as I held her close. My perfect distraction.Something was different today. I don't think it was her who was different though, I think it was me... I couldn't seem to get enough of her. (Tyler's POV)I hung up the phone and stared down at the screen with a sigh. There was nothing too pressing going on. Just the usual, a couple of disputes and disagreements within the pack, updates on border checks, that kind of thing. But still... I couldn't shake the feeling that something was off.The sound of the TV show in the living room filtered down the hallway as I headed back, trying to come up with some reason for Kate not to go.As I entered, everything appeared normal. She was snuggled up against Ryder, her head tucked under his chin while his arm was draped around her, holding her protectively. The sight should have been reassuring, but for some reason, it wasn't."Everything okay?" she asked, straightening up a little as she saw me lingering in the doorway.I nodded absentmindedly, "Yeah. All fine," I replied, but I wasn't sure that it really was. With another sigh, I took a seat on the armrest of the sofa, watching her as I tried to make sense of my feelings."What?" s

(Katelyn's POV)I blinked, staring at the wiry old man with absolute confusion."No," I replied slowly. "Simon hasn't mentioned anything to me regarding his background or family history, so I'm not sure what you're talking about," I went on, curious and hopeful that he might say more.He looked at the iron-haired woman as if he wasn't sure whether he should say anything. When she made no attempt to stop him from speaking, he continued."Simon's family was betrayed by a woman of the Elysian Line," he stated, as if that was the final nail in the coffin or something."And?" I pressed, looking for more context."And his family line suffered for generations as a result," the wiry man finished, still giving no real meaning or context to the statement.I was confused."...So... What are you getting at here? Do you want to know if I'm going to betray you and have all your future generations suffer as a result? I don't understand where you're going with this. (Katelyn's POV)I stared at the closed door for a moment after Helen left, my mind spinning with her story. The fact that she’d been stuck with The Council since she was young and basically groomed to serve them and their needs felt like a slap in the face. If I didn’t fight back, that could be me. Or worse, it could be my baby.A slow, burning anger churned in my stomach and I exhaled through my nose in an attempt to calm myself. The last thing I needed right now was another telekinetic meltdown in the middle of the fucking Council headquarters.Ryder and Tyler hovered close by. Tyler reached out and gently touched my arm, his gaze flicking to the door Helen had just exited through.“You okay?” he asked, the concern clear in his voice.I shook my head as I tried to bite the anger back. “She's stuck here. She literally doesn’t have anywhere else to go. And that’s exactly what The Council wants... for me... for others like me. Forced into compliance and cooperation because they leave us

  • My Twin Alpha Valentines   Chapter 388: A Quiet Respite (Katelyn's POV)

(Katelyn's POV)We stepped out of the council chamber and into the hallway, the doors clicking shut behind us. My head felt dizzy, like I'd been spinning around and around in circles and now that I'd come to a stop, the world didn't seem to get the memo and continued to turn beneath my feet.An attendant, who’d been waiting nearby, nodded her head respectfully and began walking without a word, clearly intending for us to follow her.The place was surprisingly quiet for being so large. There was no echo of footsteps against the polished floors, no hum of distant chatter. I guessed it was the thick curtains and the huge framed paintings that were to blame. Absorbing all the sounds and swallowing them whole, leaving the space dead.Ryder and Tyler flanked me just the same as before, but the tension in their shoulders seemed to have eased somewhat. Still, they were silent as we walked, as if any sound we made might disturb the hush that hung low and oppressive over our heads. We followed

  • My Twin Alpha Valentines   Chapter 387: A Room of Many Eyes (Part 2) (Katelyn's POV)

(Katelyn's POV)I felt a little more confident once I knew that not every single person in this enormous room was out to get me. A man's voice, rough with age, spoke next from somewhere in the second row. I had to tip my head a bit to pinpoint him because of the angle and the unusual acoustics. He was tall and lean, with silvery hair pulled into a low ponytail, and when he lifted his hand to speak, his knuckles stood out like ridges. “Your powers, Kate...” He paused, as if to confirm I wouldn’t mind the nickname. “May I call you Kate?” But he didn’t actually wait for an answer. “Your powers are obviously unusual. Have you met any others with abilities similar to your own?”I hesitated. It felt like a trick question. Was I supposed to know about Helen? Or was her existence and her tie to The Council supposed to be some kind of secret?Without thinking, my gaze briefly flicked toward her, but she said nothing and her face remained completely neutral.Obviously that didn't help at all,

  • My Twin Alpha Valentines   Chapter 386: A Room of Many Eyes (Part 1) (Katelyn's POV)

(Katelyn's POV)The doors swung open with a soft thud, revealing an amphitheater-style room with rows and rows of older men and women watching us from elevated seats. They were all Elders, each face lined with years of experience... decades, maybe even fucking centuries for all I knew. Here they sat, their faces stern and composed. It was almost surreal. There were about fifty of them, I might guess. Fifty people who were basically going to determine my future on my behalf. Can't say I liked the sound of that at all.Tyler, Ryder, and I stood at the center of the space, where a single wooden chair awaited me. Just one. Obviously they hadn't anticipated that I'd be bringing an entourage. My heart clenched in my chest and I swallowed hard, hoping I wouldn’t choke on my own nerves. In the front row, I spotted Helen, Roderick, and, much to my disappointment, Simon. Helen nodded and gave me a small smile in greeting, while Roderick kept his expression neutral, though I could see his eyes s

(Katelyn's POV)The cab pulled up outside a weathered, ivy-clad building on a quiet street in New Haven, Connecticut. From the outside, it looked like an old academic institute. Just the type of place someone might come to pore over dusty manuscripts or discuss obscure theories with professors who wore tweed jackets. But I knew better. This was The Council’s headquarters, masquerading as the “Institute for Cultural Anthropology” to the human world. I'd heard about it, but I never thought I would actually get to see it in the flesh. My stomach churned as I stepped out onto the sidewalk. The air was crisp, carrying a hint of autumn even though it wasn’t quite the season yet.Behind me, Tyler and Ryder followed closely, their postures tense and alert, flanking me like a pair of protective bodyguards. It was an odd comfort, knowing I wasn’t walking into this alone. But the weight of what lay ahead pressed down on me like a lead blanket.“Looks normal enough,” Ryder muttered, eyeing the st

(Katelyn's POV)"You're okay," Tyler whispered over and over again, but I wasn't sure whether he was talking to me or to himself.“What the fuck was that, Kate?!” Ryder's voice demanded.I shook my head, against Tyler's chest, still trying to come to terms with where I was and what was going on here."I... I just..." I tried to reply, but my voice was weak and hoarse.Tyler kissed the top of my head, his own breathing uneven as he gently stroked my hair, still holding me against him in a death grip. "Sshhh... Sshhh..." he hushed me, shaking his head as he rocked me back and forth."Never again. Never a-fucking-gain. Okay? You're never doing that again, Katelyn," Ryder's voice was sharp and firm, leaving no room for argument or debate. "Never again..." he repeated, sounding more exhausted now.It took a few minutes for me to regain my bearings as Tyler continued to whisper soft reassurances in my ear, rocking me back and forth against his chest like a child.I heard the sound of footst

(Katelyn's POV)The airplane’s engines droned softly as I stared out the window, the world below reduced to quilted patches of green and brown earth divided by winding roads.New Haven, Connecticut... The Council Headquarters. We were still a few hours away, but the gravity of what awaited me felt like a noose around my neck.I adjusted my seatbelt for what felt like the hundredth time and closed my eyes, leaning back into my seat and letting my thoughts drift back over the last two days at home. The two days I’d spent trying, and failing, to harness my telekinesis. The two days that had left me feeling more exhausted, more frustrated, and more anxious than before.I’d wanted so badly to figure it all out before I faced The Council. I’d tried everything I could think of. At first, I tried to recreate the conditions of those emotional surges, thinking maybe I could trick my mind into somehow flipping that internal switch. I thought about arguments. About fear. About sadness. But nothin

(Katelyn's POV)The next day started off like any other, but with the new weight and responsibility of pregnancy pressing down on me. I'd made a call to Dr Connors's offices to try and get a better idea of how far along I was and we managed to gauge that I was about three weeks in. She said they would be able to confirm by checking measurements and all that stuff at my first scan, but for now, I was three weeks in. Three out of forty. It somehow felt like too much and not enough at the same time.Shortly after the call, Alpha David's voice called from upstairs. My blood went cold and the twins and I exchanged worried glances."Jesus, do you think he overheard that?" I asked, feeling like a deer caught in the headlights.Tyler shook his head. "I doubt it..." but still, he looked as concerned as I felt. The fact that David had bothered to call us upstairs personally, rather than sending Tyler a message like he usually did, didn’t escape me. This time, he’d taken the effort to personally
