Chapter 173: Discovering Patterns

last update Last Updated: 2024-07-17 23:59:43
The next few weeks blended together into a rather monotonous routine, each day indistinguishable from the last.

Tyler spent his days as he usually did. Classes, physical training, and other pack business, while Ryder bounced between being my willing subject to test visions on, along with his own study and work schedule, and then also his therapy appointments.

Initially, I had planned to practice daily, but it soon became apparent that that wasn't going to happen. It was so taxing that realistically, I couldn't manage more than two or three days a week without burning myself out.

The sessions left me exhausted and often feeling sick, especially if I touched someone in the vision. After I figured that out I made a conscious effort to avoid any type of physical contact with the subjects in the visions, which seemed to help alleviate some of the aftereffects.

I spent most of my days reading or making notes on the things I had learned in an effort to keep some kind of log for my own records

It had been almost a month since that terrifying vision where I saw myself pregnant and battered. Ryder and I had made significant progress with the visions, but spending so much time together was taking its toll on me and it was getting harder and harder to remember why I was holding a grudge against him.On weekends, I sometimes showed Tyler the progress I had made with the visions. We had a really rocky start, which was kind of my fault because I hadn't mentioned to him that when you tell yourself not to think about something, the possibility of the vision being about that thing seems to be exponentially higher. So when we found ourselves standing in his bedroom as him and Jess came barrelling in while making out. It was awkward, to say the least. He handled it really well though. As soon as he saw what was happening, he stood between me and what was going on in the vision behind him, covering my ears with his hands and just looking straight into my eyes. At first, he seemed panick

I turned to Tyler, "Are we having dinner with your parents tonight?""Yeah, they want to celebrate the new car," he replied.A knot tightened in my stomach as I remembered our last dinner together.Tyler noticed my apprehension. "My parents promised it wouldn’t be a repeat of last time."I grimaced, but nodded, figuring I didn't exactly have a choice either way."How about we go for a run?" he suggested, wrapping his arm around my shoulder and pulling me closer so that he could kiss my cheek."I already went for a run this morning," I revealed, dismissing the idea."Yeah, but not with me," he said, smiling.I hesitated, feeling guilty. "I want to go for a run with you, I really do. But I’m really excited about the car and I want to check what the requirements are for getting my license here," I explained.Tyler chuckled. "Am I getting second place to a car here?" he teased, shaking his head. "It is a purple car..." I said, trying to justify it.He sighed and nodded, pulling me in for

It was Friday morning, and I woke up to Tyler gently stroking my cheek."Morning," he whispered as he saw my eyes beginning to flutter open."Morning," I replied with a groggy smile."Are you ready to get up?" he asked.I groaned and said, "Five more minutes," nuzzling into him.He played with my hair as I pretended to be asleep. "You excited to get some answers today?" he asked, referring to my meeting with his tutor this morning."I’m excited but also nervous," I sighed, opening my eyes. "I really hope he can help me with some answers. That’s my biggest fear at this point, that I never understand why this is happening.""Sometimes things happen that we can’t explain," Tyler said supportively. "If that’s the case, then you need to find your own meaning in it," he encouraged me, probably wanting to prepare me for potential disappointment in the gentlest way possible.I supposed he was right, but it was still frustrating.Groaning, I got up and stretched my arms above my head. After our shower, we climbed out, and Tyler headed back to his own room to get dressed. "You’d better hurry, or we’re going to be late," he called out."Worth it!" I replied with a smile as I pulled on my panties. We met up in the kitchen where Tyler was pouring coffee into travel mugs for us. He handed me a protein bar and a sealed cup. "Let’s go," he said gesturing with his head towards the door."What? No bacon? No eggs? No hash browns? What kind of service is this?" I teased. He chuckled as he held the front door open for me. "I’ll get you a complaint card to fill in.""So where are we going?" I asked as we settled into his car and buckled our seatbelts."The Fortress," Tyler replied, looking back over his shoulder as he reversed down the driveway."The Fortress?!" I asked in surprise.Did they have some kind of castle or stronghold here that I wasn't aware of?Tyler smiled, probably knowing that the name would raise an eyebrow. "It's like a training center. I hesitated, nervous that he was going to think I was insane, but I knew I had to tell him. I'd searched for answers myself, but had come out empty handed."I... um... Well, do you know anything about werewolves and visions?" I asked, trying to sound as casual as possible.Shane looked at me curiously, his brow furrowed with deep lines. "What kind of visions?" he probed."Oh, you know... just the standard kind. Just visions of the past... the future," I went on with a shrug, still trying to sound nonchalant. He chuckled a little at that. "The 'standard' kind? In my experience, I can't really say that werewolves having visions is standard.""Um..." I looked over at Tyler nervously, but he nodded, encouraging me to go on."Who is experiencing these visions?" Shane asked, throwing me a lifeline."Me..." I said, my voice soft and filled with uncertainty.Shane looked at me apprehensively. I could see his mind working as he tried to establish whether I was being serious or not. After a mom

I gave Shane a reassuring rub on the shoulder, trying to anchor him after the emotional journey through his memory. Tyler watched, perplexed, his eyes darting between us.Shane took a moment to pull himself together, then looked at me with curiosity, his mind clearly working."So? Any ideas?" I asked tentatively. He pursed his lips as he thought, then headed over to the bookshelf at the back of the classroom. Tyler and I followed behind him, watching as he pulled a book off the shelf and began to page through it in search of something.Tyler gave me a questioning look, but I shook my head, indicating that now wasn’t the time to recount Shane's brief reunion with his deceased family.Shane skimmed through the book, but then closed it with a sigh and began his search for another. His fingers brushed over the spines as he searched for the title he was looking for. He pulled another one off the shelf and began to skim through it, all the while muttering to himself under his breath, "Visio

Tyler held me tightly as I struggled to process the bombshell that had just dropped on my life. My mother’s dismissive attitude along with her instruction to keep this revelation a secret cut me deeply, but it was the realization that my entire life had been built on a lie that truly shattered me.He rubbed my back soothingly, his warmth offering a small measure of comfort in the midst of my turmoil.“We’ll figure this out,” he repeated, his voice a steady anchor in the storm of my emotions.I pulled away slightly, looking up at him with tear-filled eyes. “I don’t even know where to start,” I admitted, feeling lost.“Well, let’s go see if Shane can tell us more about the Elysian Line,” Tyler suggested. But I wasn’t interested in that right now. Right now, all I could think about was the fact that the parents I had known my entire life were not really my parents. The life I had thought was mine wasn’t real. I was adopted. I was adopted, and Aunt Mara had known but hadn’t told me. It fe

I cried the whole way home while Ryder drove, his looks of concern growing more intense with every sob that racked my body."Are you okay?" he asked for the third time during the short drive, but I couldn’t bring myself to answer him. Instead, I just sobbed harder.Tyler hadn’t explained the situation to Ryder, he’d just asked him to come and pick me up, so that’s what he did. Now that I thought about it, it was probably a bit unfair on him, but I knew that I wouldn’t be able to say the words out loud right now. I was an absolute mess.Ryder pulled into the driveway and paused before getting out. He hesitantly asked, "Did something happen with Tyler?" but all I could do was shake my head while trying to find the buckle of my seatbelt through a blur of tears."I’m so worried about you," Ryder went on, sounding absolutely helpless. "Is it... Is it me?" he asked tentatively.I shook my head again as I opened the door to climb out. He rushed out of the car, making his way over to my side.

I adjusted my grip on the tiny, squirming bundle in my arms and smiled as a chorus of laughter echoed through the Valentine house."Could you hold her for a sec?" I asked Ryder, shifting Ava into a more comfortable position. "I forgot my phone downstairs.""Absolutely," he replied, his face lighting up as he took her from me.I had to admit, Ryder had surprised me. I’d always known Tyler would step up to fatherhood like it was his destiny, but Ryder… I thought he might need a little more coaxing along the way.To my relief, and, I'll be honest, surprise, that hadn’t been the case at all.Ryder had embraced fatherhood like a natural. Late-night feeds? He was right there with me. Diapers? No problem. Making sure I ate? He was relentless. And the way he loved our daughter, with every fiber of his being... God, it melted my heart daily.Tyler, on the other hand, was exactly the dad I’d known he’d be. He was steady, dependable, and endlessly patient. Where Ryder brought the energy and fun,

(Katelyn's POV)I nodded slowly, processing it all as I tried to picture it in my mind's eye."Oh! And get this!" Ryder piped up with an excited grin. "Michael, the guy you wrapped around the pillar? He's Simon's cousin!""What?! How do you know that?" I asked, confused.Tyler replied this time, "Well, when we were leaving, we bumped into Simon in one of those long, winding corridors. He started going off at us asking where we were going and if we had permission to leave, blah blah blah... But Helen shut him down. She told him that the decision had been made and instead of giving us a hard time he should probably go and check on his cousin because the last time she saw him, he didn't look so good.""You should have seen his face," Ryder smirked, chuckling to himself. "He just stood there for a moment, still blocking our path, but then I think something clicked in his head. (Katelyn's POV)The first thing I registered was the sound of hushed voices and the faint smell of lavender. My eyelids felt like they’d been superglued shut, but after what felt like an Olympic-level effort, I finally managed to pry them open.My vision swam, the room around me looking like a watercolor painting that someone had left out in the rain.Where was I? WHO was I? It felt like I had been asleep for a hundred years.I blinked repeatedly, willing my vision to focus, but when it finally did, nothing seemed familiar. It was dark, from what I could tell, and the only light was coming from a lamp somewhere on the other side of the room.I shifted onto my elbow, trying to sit up, but I instantly regretted it. Pain throbbed in my skull, my head spinning like I’d spent hours on some rotating carnival ride. A groan escaped me, and the low murmurs nearby stopped immediately.“Kate?” A voice cut through the haze... Familiar, warm, desperate. My gaze darted toward the sound, and there t

(Katelyn's POV)She was furious, but not with me. I could feel her... like a storm raging inside me, raw and untamed. I waited in the quiet shelter of my own mind, nothing more than an observer as I watched her wrath unfold. It was like witnessing a hurricane from the safety of a bunker, awe and terror warring inside me."We... We didn't know!" the iron-haired woman’s voice quivered, her arms raised defensively, as if they could shield her from the Goddess's divine fury."You didn't know?! You didn't know that you were exploiting them? Or you didn't know that I would care?" the Moon Goddes spoke through my lips, her words flowing like liquid thunder."I... We..." the woman stammered, her eyes darting around desperately, searching for someone, ANYONE, to come to her rescue. But no one did. No one dared to move. They were all frozen like statues in the face of the storm."You will—" the words spilled from my mouth, but I somehow managed to cut them off abruptly when I heard Tyler's angu

(Tyler's POV)"I don't know what to do," Kate whispered, her voice filled with helplessness as she looked up at me while I struggled against the attendants who held me in place."Let him go," she ordered, authority resonating through her voice in a way I'd never heard before. When they hesitated, she glanced toward the man she'd just sent flying through the air like a puppet as some kind of silent warning of her power. That seemed like enough for them to release me.The second I was free, I fell down beside her, desperate to stop the blood that was pouring from Ryder's neck. It was coming out so fast it was clear that they must have gotten an artery, the blood pulsating out of the wound in steady throbs."What do we do?" she whispered, looking to me for answers I didn't have.I reached out, holding my hand over hers in some futile attempt to stop the bleeding, but it was like trying to hold back a flood with a fucking paper towel. His neck was a mangled wreck. (Katelyn's POV)Tyler’s hand trembled as he held it in place over mine, trying desperately to stop the blood that continued to pulse out, albeit at a much slower pace now.His voice was a whisper and it wavered with desperation. "You’re going to be okay, Ryder. You hear me? Just hang on. Just—" he broke off, choking back a sob as his other hand found its way to Ryder’s blood-matted fur as he rubbed him affectionately. He looked at me, his face pale and his eyes swimming with tears that he tried uselessly to blink away.“Kate...” His voice cracked, barely audible above the rapid, shallow breaths of his brother. “The bleeding... it’s too much. He’s not healing fast enough.”His words struck me like a dagger to the chest. I'd thought it, but hearing him say it out loud made it real.“What are you saying?!” I cried, my voice raw and broken as I gripped Ryder’s limp paw, shaking it in hopes of some kind of reaction. My vision blurred as I let the tears spill down my cheeks. “Is he going to

"You're a curse! A witch! A temptress! Do you know how my family has suffered because of you?!" he spat as he shook me violently, his eyes filled with absolute rage."But... I..." I stammered, trying to form words into sentences, but my brain couldn't do it.All I could do was stare at him, still reeling from the fact that one second I had been kneeling beside Ryder, trying to help him, and the next, I was being violently shaken by a man who seemed to have gone full psycho."Katelyn?!" Instead, they all looked toward the iron-haired woman as if waiting for her to give them some instruction."Move," Tyler demanded sharply as Ryder appeared on my other side."We aren't finished here," the iron-haired woman called out as three more attendants appeared to block our exit."She wants to leave," Ryder replied, his voice filled with venom as he turned to address her."We aren't finished," she repeated, her voice cold and sharp as steel."I thought you said this was a hearing," I shot back, glaring at her. Are you going to impose some kind of limitations on me and my abilities? Or do you plan to lock me in a prison cell? Or maybe a tower in the middle of nowhere? Are you going to kill me? Seriously, what options are on the table here?!" I pressed, annoyed by how fucking evasive she was being. It felt like they had already made up their minds here.
