EMMA'S POV

You’ve got to be kidding me.

Everything that had happened before? Straight-up nightmare material.

I could’ve sworn my brain just short-circuited. How the hell did this even happen?

Of all the people in the world, why her? Why now?

I rubbed my eyes, hoping I was wrong, but no amount of blinking could make her disappear or look different. My stomach knotted in unease as I stared at her, mainly because my mind was starting to make up different scenarios.

If that child in her belly wasn’t Sebastian’s, then whose was it? And why was she here, in our home? What if the child did belong to Sebastian, and that was why she was here?My heart hammered unevenly, and every beat sent another wave of pain to my head.

Ava’s face barely twitched, but I knew she recognized me, the way her green eyes rolled showed that she remembered me before she broke the silence. “Is it you?” she asked, her voice had a hint of familiarity.

Sebastian glanced between us, confused. “Wait, you two know each other?”

“No,” we both replied in unison, too quickly. My palms felt clammy, and I avoided looking directly at her. She did the same.

It wasn’t a full lie, we didn’t know each other well. But meeting earlier today wasn’t something I could just blurt out. It didn't count as knowing, I mean, I almost hurt her and her child, but it didn't count as knowing.

Sebastian cleared his throat, his tone softening as he explained. “Ava’s… been through a lot. Her boyfriend passed away in a car accident, and, well…” His voice trailed off as he glanced down at her huge, swollen belly.

“She’s carrying his child. Her parents are gone, too, so she doesn’t have anyone else. I told her she could stay here for a bit until she figures things out.” He glanced up at me after speaking with that look in his eyes, that look he makes whenever he wants me to do something for him.

My chest tightened. I wanted to say something, anything, but the words stuck in my throat. I could only nod, forcing my lips into a tight smile. I wouldn't say I liked this.

I hated this so freaking much.

Before I could gather my thoughts, Sebastian’s phone buzzed in his pocket. He frowned at the screen. “Sorry, it’s work. I need to take this. You two… uh, make yourselves comfortable, and Ava, be nice.”

Be nice? What the hell was that supposed to mean?

With that, he disappeared into the study, leaving me alone with Ava.

Ava bent down to open her suitcase, her movements awkward and slow. The heavy weight of her swollen belly made even the simplest task seem like an impossible struggle.

I watched her for a moment, my chest still tight, but something tugged at me. Sebastian’s words echoed in my head—about her family, her boyfriend, everything she had been through.

Maybe this was my chance to be the bigger person. Maybe, just maybe, I could show her kindness despite everything.

I walked over to her, offering a small, hesitant smile. “Do you need help with that?”

Ava grabbed her things and stood up, her eyes meeting mine.“No, I’m fine.”

Her eyes scanned me slowly, from head to toe, lingering a little too long on my outfit.

“Urg, so this is Sebastian’s taste now?” she said, her voice oozing with sarcasm.

Her words stung, but I refused to let it show. “I am sorry. What did you say?”

She tilted her head, her lips curving into a mocking smile. “I figured you’d be my rival when I first heard about you. Turns out I was wrong. You’re not even in the same league.”

My breath hitched, but I squared my shoulders. “Despite whatever you think, the fact remains, I’m Sebastian’s wife and guess what, you are not.” I felt proud of myself after speaking.

Her smirk faltered for a split second before it returned. “Wife?” She laughed lightly, like the old witches in a scary movie. “Oh, sweetheart. Don’t you realize? To Sebastian, you’re just a consolation prize. A replacement. A rebound.” Her gaze flicked down to my stomach as if she could see my baby. My hand drifted instinctively to my belly, a gesture I wasn’t sure she noticed. “That’s all you’ve ever been.”

Her words hurt more than I wanted to admit. I tried to block them out, but at that moment, all I could think about was what she said.

I hadn’t told Sebastian about the pregnancy yet. I’d been waiting for the right moment, but now, with Ava here… Would my child become nothing more than a burden in his heart? Something else to weigh him down with all he already had to take care of now? What if Ava stayed with us longer? Would he prefer her child over mine?

I straightened my spine, determined not to let her see my fear. “You left, Ava. Whatever you think you had with Sebastian, it’s over. Your return doesn’t change that.”

Her smile widened, but it didn’t reach her eyes. “Oh, darling. You don’t get it, do you? My return changes every single thing.”  What was wrong with this woman? Did she decide to wage a personal war against me? Fine. If she wanted a war, I was more than ready to fight.

Before I could respond, the study door creaked open, and Sebastian reappeared.

Ava’s demeanor changed instantly; she became a soft child. “I hope I’m not imposing,” she said, her tone shockingly soft, making my head pound even more. I could tell exactly what she was doing—playing the victim, pretending to be fragile.

“I don’t want to be a burden to you two.”

I nodded along, forcing a smile. “Yeah, maybe we could help her find a place, Sebastian. Something close by, so she’s not too far from us.”

But the moment the words left my mouth, I saw it—the flicker of anger in Ava’s eyes.

“Renting a place isn’t really convenient for her, Emma," Sebastian said, his voice firm but softer than usual. "What if she falls or hurts herself? It’s not safe.”

He turned to Ava with a reassuring smile. “It’s no trouble. You’re not bothering us. Just stay here for now.”

I stood there, silent, as they exchanged words that felt far too intimate for my comfort. I was his wife, yet at that moment, I felt like an outsider in my own home. It was almost funny—almost.

Then Sebastian turned to me, his brow furrowing slightly. “By the way, Emma, wasn’t there something you wanted to tell me earlier? You said it was important.”

My heart leapt into my throat. This was my chance to tell him. But with Ava standing there, the words just refused to come. I couldn't say it with the predatory way she watched me. It wasn't time yet. I'll tell him later.

I forced a smile, shaking my head. “Oh, it was nothing. I’ve forgotten for now. I’ll tell you when I remember.”

Sebastian looked puzzled, but he didn’t press further. “Alright, if you’re sure.”

I didn't have to tell him now. It wasn't time yet. My eyes drifted to Ava, who gave me a sickly smile, scaring me.

Did I make a mistake not telling him?

EMMA'S POVNo. Telling him would cause a lot, and I wasn't ready to handle any problems.I knew telling Sebastian about my pregnancy now would only throw fuel onto an already blazing fire. The timing was all wrong. I was only three weeks pregnant so I couldn't be sure. Besides, I stubbornly convinced myself that he’d notice me eventually. He’ll take the time to see how I feel or behave. Maybe then, when his attention wasn’t so divided and was only on me, I’d share my news. For now, though, I had to keep it to myself. The days with Ava in the house were agonizing; it was like living in hell. She was everywhere: in the kitchen and the living room.Everywhere I went, she was there, and it felt like she’d claimed the role of mistress of the house. Meanwhile, I was reduced to something unimportant, an extra. She made me feel like I was a burden to her and Sebastian, even though I was his wife. When Sebastian left for work every morning, I dreaded being alone with her. I liked it. It felt

I could see that he was telling the truth but I still couldn't accept that. He met my eyes, holding my gaze as if willing me to believe him. “Emma, that child she’s carrying… it isn’t mine. My relationship with Ava ended a long time ago. Whatever we had is in the past.” I knew that. But hearing it, feeling it... didn’t make it easier to swallow.I stared at him, searching his face for any sign of hesitation, any flicker of doubt. But there was none. His expression was calm, and for a moment, I felt the weight in my chest ease just slightly. “Then why,” I began, my voice cracking, “why are you so… involved with her? Why does she have to stay here, Sebastian?” I liked that he wanted to be a good person, but why did she have to be here? He could help her with some money. He sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Because I owe her family,” he said quietly. “Ava

EMMA'S POV “It’s been ages! Look at you! And look at this little miracle,” Gloria cooed, her hands gesturing toward Ava’s belly. I stood frozen by the door, my nails digging into the edge of the frame. Ava broke into her signature coy smile, sweet. It was as though they’d been separated for decades instead of however long it had actually been. The two of them wasted no time conversing; their voices were loud enough to fill the entire house. Gloria asked about Ava’s pregnancy as though it were the most fascinating thing in the world. “Do you think it’s a boy or a girl?” she asked breathlessly, her tone practically dripping with excitement like Ava's child was going to be her niece or nephew.Ava placed a hand on her belly and laughed softly. “I’m hoping for a boy, but we’ll see. It doesn’t matter as long as the baby is healthy.” Gloria’s gaze softened, her expression almost maternal as she placed a hand on Ava’s arm. “Oh, wouldn’t it just be wonderful if it were Sebastian’s?” sh

I sat there, feeling like a total mess, my knees digging into the cold floor, the ache in my stomach still gnawing at me.My hands hung limply in my lap as Ava’s sobs echoed through the room. Honestly, it was worse than nails on a chalkboard."Do you need to go to the hospital?" Sebastian asked, voice laced with worry. But he still hadn’t even bothered to check on me, not once.Ava shook her head violently, tears streaming down her flushed cheeks as she cried, “I’m fine, I’m fine,” over and over again. You could barely hear her over her consistent hiccups as she sobbed. I didn’t move. I didn’t say a word. I just sat there, my eyes blank, staring at the mess of scattered art supplies around me. It wasn’t until Sebastian turned to me that I felt how angry he was. Was he mad at me? Of course, he was. “Emma,” he said, his tone cold like he was preparing to scold me, “how could you be so inconsiderate?” I flinched, but I d

SEBASTIAN'S POV “I'm sorry about everything Seb.” Ava suddenly spoke, making me look down at her. She was sitting on her bed with a fruit plate on her lap which Gloria had provided for her before leaving.“Sorry for what?” I was confused. She didn't have any reason to feel sorry, she hadn't done anything wrong.“For the issues I might have caused between you and Emma.” She bit her lip tightly with teary eyes.“You didn't cause anything Ava. Emma's just going through a tough time right now. She'll come around soon.” I had convinced myself severally that Emma was just going through a tough time and she'd talk about it when she was ready. “Sebastian,” she said softly, her voice trembling just enough to tug at some part of me that still felt responsible for her. “Can you stay with me tonight? Gloria already left and I… I don’t know if I can do this alone and my tummy hurts a little.”I sighed, raking a hand through my hair. “You’re not alone, Ava. That’s why you’re here. Emma and I are

Sebastian and I sat just a few feet apart, yet the distance between us felt insurmountable. My fingers played absentmindedly with the hem of my nightgown, twisting and untwisting the fabric.I looked at him, my throat tight as I finally found my voice. “Do you love me?” He didn’t hesitate. “Of course, I love you,” he said as his eyes bore into mine. “I’ve always loved you, Emma, and nothing is ever going to change that.” I wanted to believe him. God, I wanted to believe him. I wanted to hold onto those words and let them soothe the ache in my chest, but a part of me hesitated. “I love you too,” I whispered, and for a moment, everything felt perfect, or at least close to it. “Fuck, I love you so much, Emma. More than anything in this world,” he whispered with a soft smile.“More than yourself?” I asked, teasing lightly with a pout.He nodded; his tone playful. “More than I love myself, and that is saying a

EMMA'S POVI was ready for the worst. Sex. Betrayal. The ultimate cliché!But nope. How ironic. There she was—Ava. Sitting like she owned the damn room, lounging on the edge of Sebastian’s office couch with her long legs stretched. When she saw me? Not even a flicker of guilt. And there was my husband, kneeling by her feet, his hands pressed against her ankles in a way that made my stomach churn. He was massaging her feet like she was fragile china.I froze. My grip on the doorknob tightened, the cold metal freezing my palm. They both looked up at me, but neither seemed startled. Ava gave me a slow, deliberate smile, one I'd become too familiar with. Tears welled up in my eyes again and I hurriedly blinked them away, clenching my fists tightly by my side.Ava, of course, chose that moment to interject. She walked over to him, her movements slow as she placed one hand behind her back and placed the other hand on his shoulder. “Seb, it’s okay,” she said softly, like she was comforting him. “You can keep the lilies. I don’t mind being allergic. If it makes Emma happy, I’m willing to endure it. After all, I’m the one dependent on your kindness. Emma’s POVI didn’t even think. My feet moved before my brain could think, and I found myself chasing after Ava, my heart pounding with anger and fear."Ava!" I called as I closed the distance between us. She stopped in her tracks, slowly turning to face me, her lips curling into that same annoying smug, cryptic smile she always had on."Well, well," she said, tilting her head as she looked me up and down. "What do you want, Emma?" Her tone was so mocking it made my anger increase.I stepped in front of her, blocking her path. "What’s your deal, Ava? What are you trying to pull here?" Her smile widened, and she crossed her arms casually. "Me? Oh nothing, I’m just observing," she said, "But you seem a little… tense. Feeling guilty, maybe?" Her words made my stomach twist, but I forced myself to stay calm. Losing it on her here wasn’t going to help. I took a deep breath and tried to keep my voice steady. My voice shook as I crouched beside him on the floor, my heart pounding so hard it physically hurt, badly. He clutched at his own chest, his hand trembling, his face pale and drenched in sweat. His lips moved, but at first, no sound came out. Finally, in a voice so weak it was barely audible, he gasped, "My heart… hurts." I froze for a second. The heart transplant surgery from three years ago. Oh God. No. This had never happened before, was he having complications? My own heart beat faster at that."Sebastian, stay with me," I said, my voice still shaky as I fumbled to pull my phone out of my pocket. My fingers shook so much I almost dropped it. I jabbed at the screen, dialing emergency services. "911, what’s your emergency?" came a voice on the other end."Umm.. there's someone here….he collapsed and I don't know what to do," I stammered, barely able to get the words out. Today had already been long enough and I couldn't wait for it to end.I mean I loved the kids but Sebastian had only made today stressful for me. The kids had already started packing up their things immediately I told them the class was over. Sebastian raised his voice just enough to be heard over the noise. "Come on, kids, say goodbye to Teacher Emma!" "Goodbye, Teacher!" they all flocked around me and chorused, their tiny hands waving as they ran towards the door like they would get an award for whoever reaches there first.I forced a smile and waved back, though my chest ached from everything that was happening, especially the man standing a few feet away from me.As the last kid disappeared into the hallway, silence fell over the room. Just me and Sebastian now. The air felt heavier somehow. It was suffocating and uncomfortable and I just wanted him to leave as soon as possible.I focused on the scattered art su

A few of them giggled, while one brave little boy reached out to poke Sebastian’s arm. Sebastian didn’t even flinch. My grip tightened on the edge of my canvas as I stood frozen at the front of the room, staring at him like he was some kind of alien who had just crash-landed in the middle of my life. And I didn't like this alien at all."What are you doing here?" I finally managed to get out lowly, to avoid scaring the children. "Please leave." Sebastian looked up at me, completely unbothered. He shrugged, setting the crayon down on the table with a certain ease that made my blood boil. His other hand rested on the back of his chair, his expensive-looking watch glinting under the lights as he leaned back slightly. The number Abigail had told me was so big it didn't sound real, like it was part of some prank or something. But it wasn’t. It was sitting there, right in Abigail's gallery’s fundraising account, a direct deposit from Sebastian. What the hell was he up to? My thumb hovered over my phone for half a second before I gave in, scrolling to his number and pressing call.He picked up after barely one ring, like he’d been sitting there, waiting for me to call…to cave. "Finally calling me back?" His voice was low, smooth, and tinged with just enough smugness to make my anger rise.I gripped the phone so tightly my knuckles turned white. "What game are you playing, Sebastian? What do you want?" He chuckled softly, the sound only making my blood boil. "Game? I have no idea what you’re talking about. I drove my elbow back as hard as I could, aiming for his stomach. It connected. Sebastian let out a low grunt, staggering back a step, his arms falling away from me as he clutched his abdomen. "Emma!" he gasped, but I didn’t wait to hear whatever excuse or plea he was about to throw at me.I turned and practically bolted to Alex, my legs shaky and weak. Without even pausing to think, I looped my arm through his, clinging to him like he was my saviour or something. My eyes went to Abigail who looked like she was enjoying this. My eyes moved back to Sebastian and I took a deep breath before speaking."Let me introduce you," I said, my voice sharper than I’d intended but loud enough to make Sebastian focus on me. I looked straight at Sebastian, whose face was twisted with a mix of pain and confusion. "This is my boyfriend." Sebastia

My heart was pounding so loudly I was sure he could hear it.Sebastian stood there, his hands stuffed in the pockets of his leather jacket, looking way too casual for someone who shouldn’t even be here.“Jenny guessed you’d be at Abigail’s and we'll, here you are,” he replied hesitantly, his voice low, but his eyes, those deep gray eyes, never left my face. My stomach twisted at the mention of mom. Of course, she’d tell him. She always thought she knew what was best for everyone, but this? I thought she hated him for me so why would she tell him where I could be.“I can't believe you actually went to see her. Well, congratulations to her for being right. Now leave.” I crossed my arms tightly over my chest. “I don’t need you here, Sebastian. You shouldn't even be here. Emma’s POVMy mom and I hadn’t been close in a while. We weren’t the kind of family that shared Sunday dinners or spoke every day on the phone like normal family members did.My mom had gotten me from the orphanage when I was younger and we moved to a small farm in the rural Southeast, where life was easy and simple, peaceful even.Back then, it felt like the world was no bigger than our little house and the fields out front. But when I left for the city, that life started to feel distant. We grew apart, little by little, until our conversations were just polite check-ins on birthdays or holidays. She didn’t approve of the choices I’d made. Especially when I told her I was marrying Sebastian. We'd had a huge argument about that."He’s not right for you," she had told me, coldly.
