EMMA'S POV

You’ve got to be kidding me.

Everything that had happened before? Straight-up nightmare material.

I could’ve sworn my brain just short-circuited. How the hell did this even happen?

Of all the people in the world, why her? Why now?

I rubbed my eyes, hoping I was wrong, but no amount of blinking could make her disappear or look different. My stomach knotted in unease as I stared at her, mainly because my mind was starting to make up different scenarios.

If that child in her belly wasn’t Sebastian’s, then whose was it? And why was she here, in our home? What if the child did belong to Sebastian, and that was why she was here?My heart hammered unevenly, and every beat sent another wave of pain to my head.

Ava’s face barely twitched, but I knew she recognized me, the way her green eyes rolled showed that she remembered me before she broke the silence. “Is it you?” she asked, her voice had a hint of familiarity.

Sebastian glanced between us, confused. “Wait, you two know each other?”

“No,” we both replied in unison, too quickly. My palms felt clammy, and I avoided looking directly at her. She did the same.

It wasn’t a full lie, we didn’t know each other well. But meeting earlier today wasn’t something I could just blurt out. It didn't count as knowing, I mean, I almost hurt her and her child, but it didn't count as knowing.

Sebastian cleared his throat, his tone softening as he explained. “Ava’s… been through a lot. Her boyfriend passed away in a car accident, and, well…” His voice trailed off as he glanced down at her huge, swollen belly.

“She’s carrying his child. Her parents are gone, too, so she doesn’t have anyone else. I told her she could stay here for a bit until she figures things out.” He glanced up at me after speaking with that look in his eyes, that look he makes whenever he wants me to do something for him.

My chest tightened. I wanted to say something, anything, but the words stuck in my throat. I could only nod, forcing my lips into a tight smile. I wouldn't say I liked this.

I hated this so freaking much.

Before I could gather my thoughts, Sebastian’s phone buzzed in his pocket. He frowned at the screen. “Sorry, it’s work. I need to take this. You two… uh, make yourselves comfortable, and Ava, be nice.”

Be nice? What the hell was that supposed to mean?

With that, he disappeared into the study, leaving me alone with Ava.

Ava bent down to open her suitcase, her movements awkward and slow. The heavy weight of her swollen belly made even the simplest task seem like an impossible struggle.

I watched her for a moment, my chest still tight, but something tugged at me. Sebastian’s words echoed in my head—about her family, her boyfriend, everything she had been through.

Maybe this was my chance to be the bigger person. Maybe, just maybe, I could show her kindness despite everything.

I walked over to her, offering a small, hesitant smile. “Do you need help with that?”

Ava grabbed her things and stood up, her eyes meeting mine.“No, I’m fine.”

Her eyes scanned me slowly, from head to toe, lingering a little too long on my outfit.

“Urg, so this is Sebastian’s taste now?” she said, her voice oozing with sarcasm.

Her words stung, but I refused to let it show. “I am sorry. What did you say?”

She tilted her head, her lips curving into a mocking smile. “I figured you’d be my rival when I first heard about you. Turns out I was wrong. You’re not even in the same league.”

My breath hitched, but I squared my shoulders. “Despite whatever you think, the fact remains, I’m Sebastian’s wife and guess what, you are not.” I felt proud of myself after speaking.

Her smirk faltered for a split second before it returned. “Wife?” She laughed lightly, like the old witches in a scary movie. “Oh, sweetheart. Don’t you realize? To Sebastian, you’re just a consolation prize. A replacement. A rebound.” Her gaze flicked down to my stomach as if she could see my baby. My hand drifted instinctively to my belly, a gesture I wasn’t sure she noticed. “That’s all you’ve ever been.”

Her words hurt more than I wanted to admit. I tried to block them out, but at that moment, all I could think about was what she said.

I hadn’t told Sebastian about the pregnancy yet. I’d been waiting for the right moment, but now, with Ava here… Would my child become nothing more than a burden in his heart? Something else to weigh him down with all he already had to take care of now? What if Ava stayed with us longer? Would he prefer her child over mine?

I straightened my spine, determined not to let her see my fear. “You left, Ava. Whatever you think you had with Sebastian, it’s over. Your return doesn’t change that.”

Her smile widened, but it didn’t reach her eyes. “Oh, darling. You don’t get it, do you? My return changes every single thing.”  What was wrong with this woman? Did she decide to wage a personal war against me? Fine. If she wanted a war, I was more than ready to fight.

Before I could respond, the study door creaked open, and Sebastian reappeared.

Ava’s demeanor changed instantly; she became a soft child. “I hope I’m not imposing,” she said, her tone shockingly soft, making my head pound even more. I could tell exactly what she was doing—playing the victim, pretending to be fragile.

“I don’t want to be a burden to you two.”

I nodded along, forcing a smile. “Yeah, maybe we could help her find a place, Sebastian. Something close by, so she’s not too far from us.”

But the moment the words left my mouth, I saw it—the flicker of anger in Ava’s eyes.

“Renting a place isn’t really convenient for her, Emma," Sebastian said, his voice firm but softer than usual. "What if she falls or hurts herself? It’s not safe.”

He turned to Ava with a reassuring smile. “It’s no trouble. You’re not bothering us. Just stay here for now.”

I stood there, silent, as they exchanged words that felt far too intimate for my comfort. I was his wife, yet at that moment, I felt like an outsider in my own home. It was almost funny—almost.

Then Sebastian turned to me, his brow furrowing slightly. “By the way, Emma, wasn’t there something you wanted to tell me earlier? You said it was important.”

My heart leapt into my throat. This was my chance to tell him. But with Ava standing there, the words just refused to come. I couldn't say it with the predatory way she watched me. It wasn't time yet. I'll tell him later.

I forced a smile, shaking my head. “Oh, it was nothing. I’ve forgotten for now. I’ll tell you when I remember.”

Sebastian looked puzzled, but he didn’t press further. “Alright, if you’re sure.”

I didn't have to tell him now. It wasn't time yet. My eyes drifted to Ava, who gave me a sickly smile, scaring me.

Did I make a mistake not telling him?

EMMA'S POVNo. Telling him would cause a lot, and I wasn't ready to handle any problems.I knew telling Sebastian about my pregnancy now would only throw fuel onto an already blazing fire. The timing was all wrong. I was only three weeks pregnant so I couldn't be sure. Besides, I stubbornly convinced myself that he’d notice me eventually. He’ll take the time to see how I feel or behave. Maybe then, when his attention wasn’t so divided and was only on me, I’d share my news. For now, though, I had to keep it to myself. The days with Ava in the house were agonizing; it was like living in hell. She was everywhere: in the kitchen and the living room.Everywhere I went, she was there, and it felt like she’d claimed the role of mistress of the house. Meanwhile, I was reduced to something unimportant, an extra. She made me feel like I was a burden to her and Sebastian, even though I was his wife. When Sebastian left for work every morning, I dreaded being alone with her. I liked it. It felt

I could see that he was telling the truth but I still couldn't accept that. He met my eyes, holding my gaze as if willing me to believe him. “Emma, that child she’s carrying… it isn’t mine. My relationship with Ava ended a long time ago. Whatever we had is in the past.” I knew that. But hearing it, feeling it... didn’t make it easier to swallow.I stared at him, searching his face for any sign of hesitation, any flicker of doubt. But there was none. His expression was calm, and for a moment, I felt the weight in my chest ease just slightly. “Then why,” I began, my voice cracking, “why are you so… involved with her? Why does she have to stay here, Sebastian?” I liked that he wanted to be a good person, but why did she have to be here? He could help her with some money. He sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Because I owe her family,” he said quietly. “Ava

EMMA'S POV “It’s been ages! Look at you! And look at this little miracle,” Gloria cooed, her hands gesturing toward Ava’s belly. I stood frozen by the door, my nails digging into the edge of the frame. Ava broke into her signature coy smile, sweet. It was as though they’d been separated for decades instead of however long it had actually been. The two of them wasted no time conversing; their voices were loud enough to fill the entire house. Gloria asked about Ava’s pregnancy as though it were the most fascinating thing in the world. “Do you think it’s a boy or a girl?” she asked breathlessly, her tone practically dripping with excitement like Ava's child was going to be her niece or nephew.Ava placed a hand on her belly and laughed softly. “I’m hoping for a boy, but we’ll see. It doesn’t matter as long as the baby is healthy.” Gloria’s gaze softened, her expression almost maternal as she placed a hand on Ava’s arm. “Oh, wouldn’t it just be wonderful if it were Sebastian’s?” sh

Honestly, it was worse than nails on a chalkboard."Do you need to go to the hospital?" Sebastian asked, voice laced with worry. But he still hadn’t even bothered to check on me, not once.Ava shook her head violently, tears streaming down her flushed cheeks as she cried, “I’m fine, I’m fine,” over and over again. You could barely hear her over her consistent hiccups as she sobbed. I didn’t move. I didn’t say a word. I just sat there, my eyes blank, staring at the mess of scattered art supplies around me. It wasn’t until Sebastian turned to me that I felt how angry he was. Was he mad at me? Of course, he was. “Emma,” he said, his tone cold like he was preparing to scold me, “how could you be so inconsiderate?” I flinched, but I d

She was sitting on her bed with a fruit plate on her lap which Gloria had provided for her before leaving.“Sorry for what?” I was confused. She didn't have any reason to feel sorry, she hadn't done anything wrong.“For the issues I might have caused between you and Emma.” She bit her lip tightly with teary eyes.“You didn't cause anything Ava. Emma's just going through a tough time right now. She'll come around soon.” I had convinced myself severally that Emma was just going through a tough time and she'd talk about it when she was ready. “Sebastian,” she said softly, her voice trembling just enough to tug at some part of me that still felt responsible for her. “Can you stay with me tonight? Gloria already left and I… I don’t know if I can do this alone and my tummy hurts a little.”I sighed, raking a hand through my hair. “You’re not alone, Ava. That’s why you’re here. Emma and I are

God, I wanted to believe him. I wanted to hold onto those words and let them soothe the ache in my chest, but a part of me hesitated. “I love you too,” I whispered, and for a moment, everything felt perfect, or at least close to it. “Fuck, I love you so much, Emma. EMMA'S POVThe air in the café felt colder the moment Sebastian walked close to my table.I spotted him from the corner of my eye, his shoulders tense, his brows furrowed. He didn't usually look like that, so dark, so closed off, but right now, his eyes were locked on me like I’d done something wrong. My laughter died in my throat, and I sat up straighter, my body stiffening on instinct. “Sebastian,” I said, trying to keep my voice light, even though I was very mad at him “I didn’t see you there.” His eyes flicked to Alex, and I swear I could feel the temperature drop. “Who’s this?” he asked, his tone cold. I swallowed, trying not to let his mood rattle me. “This is Alex. He’s… he’s a friend.” After our little discussion, I was sure we were way past doctor and patient.Sebastian raised an eyebrow. “A friend?” His gaze darted to Alex’s white coat, the tag on it. “Funny, you’ve never mentioned having a doctor friend before.” I felt my chest tighten, frustration growing within me. “I

She shoved it away like it offended her.I sighed, already feeling my patience slipping. “What’s wrong with it now? You said you wanted soup.”“This isn’t right,” she snapped, tossing her head back against the pillow. “It’s too salty. And the bread? It’s dry. Stale, probably. I can’t eat this.”“Okay,” I said, trying to stay calm. “What do you want, Ava?”She made a big show of thinking, tapping her chin and staring up at the ceiling. I knew she already had something in mind, she just loved making me jump through hoops as always. “A fruit parfait,” she said finally. “But it has to be fresh. Like, with real berries. Not the frozen kind.”“Got it,” I muttered, already moving the tray away and bringing another flask closer.Ava had always been particular and picky about everything, but her demands had only grown more exhausting since she’d been admitted to the hospital.

The sight of him pulled me back to a moment I had tried not to dwell on, his steady hands, his calm voice when I'd cried to him about finding who had Matthew's heart."Dr. Alex," I said, quickly wiping at my face, hoping he wouldn’t notice the redness in my eyes. God, the last thing I needed right now was for someone else to ask me what was wrong. "Emma," he greeted. “Long time no see.” The corner of his mouth tugged upward in an attempt at a smile, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “It’s been three years since the surgery.”I nodded stiffly, unsure what to say. Three years. Three years since Matthew’s heart became Sebastian’s. Three years since I begged Alex to tell me who received it, desperate to know where Matthew’s heart would go, who was going to keep it. Three years since I met Sebastian.“Yeah.” I muttered awkwardly after a while.“You came to me back then,” Alex continued, his tone gentler now, “aski

EMMA'S POVWhen I opened my eyes, it was like waking up from a coma. The lights were way too bright, and the beeping of some machine beside me made my head pound even worse. Everything felt sore, my arms, my legs, my belly, even my chest. What in the world happened to me? My vision was blurry as I looked down at my arm which was connected to an IV.I blinked a couple of times, trying to adjust, and then I saw him sitting there.Sebastian. He was right next to my hospital bed, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees like he’d been waiting for me to wake up. His face looked worried, but also... tired. He sat up straighter as soon as I moved, his voice soft. “Emma. You’re awake. Thank God. How are you feeling? Are you okay?” I didn’t answer him right away. I just stared at him, trying to process everything. How was I feeling? What kind of question was that? I felt awful, physically and... emotionally. But all I could focus on was the one thing that had been stuck in my head since

Her facade of perfect composure was gone.“In the end, you’re nothing but a stand-in!” she shouted. She didn’t even try to hide it. If anything, she seemed to enjoy it, being called Sebastian's wife. Her eyes sparkled with a kind of triumphant glee that made my skin crawl.
