EMMA'S POV

I looked at Sebastian, standing there so casually, as if nothing had happened. As if tossing out my gift was unimportant. “But, you didn’t even tell me,” I said, my voice low.

Sebastian glanced at me, his expression blank, as though he didn’t understand why I was upset. “It’s just flowers, Emma,” he said with a shrug. “I didn’t think it was a big deal.”

Wasn't it a big deal? Tears welled up in my eyes again and I hurriedly blinked them away, clenching my fists tightly by my side.

Ava, of course, chose that moment to interject. She walked over to him, her movements slow as she placed one hand behind her back and placed the other hand on his shoulder. “Seb, it’s okay,” she said softly, like she was comforting him. “You can keep the lilies. I don’t mind being allergic. If it makes Emma happy, I’m willing to endure it. After all, I’m the one dependent on your kindness. Without the both of you, I don't know where I'd be right now.”

I couldn’t believe her. The way she spoke, th

EMMA'S POVWe thought you were the CEO’s wife.I clenched my fists by my sides, willing myself to breathe evenly, to keep my face neutral. But Ava recovered quickly. “Oh,” she said with a soft laugh, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. “Looks like there’s been a big misunderstanding. Sebastian and I are just old friends. With a beautiful wife like this, how could I possibly be his wife? I would even want a wife like this.” I caught the flash of a smug smile curling at the corners of her perfectly glossed lips. She didn’t even try to hide it. If anything, she seemed to enjoy it, being called Sebastian's wife. Her eyes sparkled with a kind of triumphant glee that made my skin crawl. She really was evil. How did Sebastian or anyone not see this? Maybe because I was on the receiving end.She clapped her hands together, getting the attention of everyone. “Alright, enough gossip. Let’s get back to it, everyone.” Her tone was light, almost playful, but there was an edge to it that ma

EMMA'S POVWhat the hell? I blinked, my mind struggling to process what she’d just said. Ten million dollars. Divorce him. Leave.“What?” Did I seem cheap?“You heard me.” She placed the card on the coffee table between us, her manicured fingers lingering on it for just a moment before she withdrew. “I think it’s a fair offer. More than fair, actually. I'm sure you've never gotten this amount before so this should keep you afloat for a while.”My heart pounded, as I stared at the card, unable to look away. My hands clenched into fists in my lap, my nails digging into my palms.I hated Ava more than anything in this world.Every single thing she had done today was a part of her plan, taking me on a tour, explaining everything in the company. Ava didn’t just want me to feel out of place, she wanted me to crumble. What the employees had said, the way she and Sebastian bonded over riches, the glint and smirk she always had on when I was uncomfortable, she had planned everything. She had d

EMMA'S POV“Thank you for the tour. I enjoyed it.” I said lastly with a forced smile.I turned on my heel, ready to leave the room. My chest was tight, breathing seemed hard. My hands trembled at my sides, though I clenched them into fists, trying to stop the shaking. I had said my piece. I had stood my ground. I should be happy; I'd finally put her in her place. But I barely made it a few steps before I heard her voice.“Even if you’re pregnant with Sebastian’s child, so what?” I froze mid-step, her words stopping me in my tracks. What?Slowly, I turned back, my heart pounding in my chest. Ava was walking toward me, her steps hurried, her breathing heavy. Her facade of perfect composure was gone.“In the end, you’re nothing but a stand-in!” she shouted. Her eyes blazed with an intensity that sent a chill down my spine. “You think being pregnant changes anything? You think it makes you important?” She stopped a few feet away from me, her chest heaving as she glared at me with disdain

EMMA'S POVWhen I opened my eyes, it was like waking up from a coma. The lights were way too bright, and the beeping of some machine beside me made my head pound even worse. Everything felt sore, my arms, my legs, my belly, even my chest. What in the world happened to me? My vision was blurry as I looked down at my arm which was connected to an IV.I blinked a couple of times, trying to adjust, and then I saw him sitting there.Sebastian. He was right next to my hospital bed, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees like he’d been waiting for me to wake up. His face looked worried, but also... tired. He sat up straighter as soon as I moved, his voice soft. “Emma. You’re awake. Thank God. How are you feeling? Are you okay?” I didn’t answer him right away. I just stared at him, trying to process everything. How was I feeling? What kind of question was that? I felt awful, physically and... emotionally. But all I could focus on was the one thing that had been stuck in my head since

EMMA'S POVI turned and saw Dr. Alex. Sebastian's lead surgeon, standing there. The sight of him pulled me back to a moment I had tried not to dwell on, his steady hands, his calm voice when I'd cried to him about finding who had Matthew's heart."Dr. Alex," I said, quickly wiping at my face, hoping he wouldn’t notice the redness in my eyes. God, the last thing I needed right now was for someone else to ask me what was wrong. "Emma," he greeted. “Long time no see.” The corner of his mouth tugged upward in an attempt at a smile, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “It’s been three years since the surgery.”I nodded stiffly, unsure what to say. Three years. Three years since Matthew’s heart became Sebastian’s. Three years since I begged Alex to tell me who received it, desperate to know where Matthew’s heart would go, who was going to keep it. Three years since I met Sebastian.“Yeah.” I muttered awkwardly after a while.“You came to me back then,” Alex continued, his tone gentler now, “aski

SEBASTIAN'S POV“Sebastian, I don’t want this,” Ava said, scrunching her nose at the tray of soup I’d just brought her. She shoved it away like it offended her.I sighed, already feeling my patience slipping. “What’s wrong with it now? You said you wanted soup.”“This isn’t right,” she snapped, tossing her head back against the pillow. “It’s too salty. And the bread? It’s dry. Stale, probably. I can’t eat this.”“Okay,” I said, trying to stay calm. “What do you want, Ava?”She made a big show of thinking, tapping her chin and staring up at the ceiling. I knew she already had something in mind, she just loved making me jump through hoops as always. “A fruit parfait,” she said finally. “But it has to be fresh. Like, with real berries. Not the frozen kind.”“Got it,” I muttered, already moving the tray away and bringing another flask closer.Ava had always been particular and picky about everything, but her demands had only grown more exhausting since she’d been admitted to the hospital.

EMMA'S POVThe air in the café felt colder the moment Sebastian walked close to my table.I spotted him from the corner of my eye, his shoulders tense, his brows furrowed. He didn't usually look like that, so dark, so closed off, but right now, his eyes were locked on me like I’d done something wrong. My laughter died in my throat, and I sat up straighter, my body stiffening on instinct. “Sebastian,” I said, trying to keep my voice light, even though I was very mad at him “I didn’t see you there.” His eyes flicked to Alex, and I swear I could feel the temperature drop. “Who’s this?” he asked, his tone cold. I swallowed, trying not to let his mood rattle me. “This is Alex. He’s… he’s a friend.” After our little discussion, I was sure we were way past doctor and patient.Sebastian raised an eyebrow. “A friend?” His gaze darted to Alex’s white coat, the tag on it. “Funny, you’ve never mentioned having a doctor friend before.” I felt my chest tighten, frustration growing within me. “I

EMMA'S POVIf not for the tiny, innocent fetus inside her, I would have loved to punch her. Okay, maybe not punch her, I'm not a violent person, but the thought of hitting her so she'd have sense? Very tempting. Sebastian would probably divorce me straight up.I gave her a forced smile before turning to Sebastian who also looked confused. "Uh, Seb," I said, forcing a smile as I glanced at him. "Looks like someone's in my seat." Sebastian hesitated, his hand resting on his door, his eyes flickering from me to Ava like he was trying to say something that wouldn't hurt the both of us. "Uh… Ava," he said, his voice low, "do you mind moving to the back? Emma usually rides in the front." Ava turned to him, her face lighting up with an expression so sweet it made me feel sick. "Oh, I would, Seb. Really. But I just can’t stretch my legs properly in the back. You know, with the baby and all…. It's just going to be a hard and painful process for the baby and I, you wouldn't want that right?

Emma’s POVI didn’t even think. My feet moved before my brain could think, and I found myself chasing after Ava, my heart pounding with anger and fear."Ava!" I called as I closed the distance between us. She stopped in her tracks, slowly turning to face me, her lips curling into that same annoying smug, cryptic smile she always had on."Well, well," she said, tilting her head as she looked me up and down. "What do you want, Emma?" Her tone was so mocking it made my anger increase.I stepped in front of her, blocking her path. "What’s your deal, Ava? What are you trying to pull here?" Her smile widened, and she crossed her arms casually. "Me? Oh nothing, I’m just observing," she said, "But you seem a little… tense. Feeling guilty, maybe?" Her words made my stomach twist, but I forced myself to stay calm. Losing it on her here wasn’t going to help. I took a deep breath and tried to keep my voice steady. "Ava, just tell me, how much did you hear?" She raised an eyebrow, her expres

Emma’s POV"Sebastian, what’s wrong?" My voice shook as I crouched beside him on the floor, my heart pounding so hard it physically hurt, badly. He clutched at his own chest, his hand trembling, his face pale and drenched in sweat. His lips moved, but at first, no sound came out. Finally, in a voice so weak it was barely audible, he gasped, "My heart… hurts." I froze for a second. The heart transplant surgery from three years ago. Oh God. No. This had never happened before, was he having complications? My own heart beat faster at that."Sebastian, stay with me," I said, my voice still shaky as I fumbled to pull my phone out of my pocket. My fingers shook so much I almost dropped it. I jabbed at the screen, dialing emergency services. "911, what’s your emergency?" came a voice on the other end."Umm.. there's someone here….he collapsed and I don't know what to do," I stammered, barely able to get the words out. "He had a heart transplant three years ago, and now he’s saying his hea

Emma’s POVThe art class finally ended, and I exhaled in relief. Today had already been long enough and I couldn't wait for it to end.I mean I loved the kids but Sebastian had only made today stressful for me. The kids had already started packing up their things immediately I told them the class was over. Sebastian raised his voice just enough to be heard over the noise. "Come on, kids, say goodbye to Teacher Emma!" "Goodbye, Teacher!" they all flocked around me and chorused, their tiny hands waving as they ran towards the door like they would get an award for whoever reaches there first.I forced a smile and waved back, though my chest ached from everything that was happening, especially the man standing a few feet away from me.As the last kid disappeared into the hallway, silence fell over the room. Just me and Sebastian now. The air felt heavier somehow. It was suffocating and uncomfortable and I just wanted him to leave as soon as possible.I focused on the scattered art su

Emma’s POV He was sitting at one of the low tables meant for the kids, holding a brightly colored wax crayon between his fingers, twirling it like he had every right to be here. The kids sitting beside him were watching him with wide, curious eyes. A few of them giggled, while one brave little boy reached out to poke Sebastian’s arm. Sebastian didn’t even flinch. My grip tightened on the edge of my canvas as I stood frozen at the front of the room, staring at him like he was some kind of alien who had just crash-landed in the middle of my life. And I didn't like this alien at all."What are you doing here?" I finally managed to get out lowly, to avoid scaring the children. "Please leave." Sebastian looked up at me, completely unbothered. He shrugged, setting the crayon down on the table with a certain ease that made my blood boil. His other hand rested on the back of his chair, his expensive-looking watch glinting under the lights as he leaned back slightly. "Since you've refu

Emma’s POVI stared at the long string of numbers on my phone screen, my stomach twisting. I felt bile rise in my throat. The number Abigail had told me was so big it didn't sound real, like it was part of some prank or something. But it wasn’t. It was sitting there, right in Abigail's gallery’s fundraising account, a direct deposit from Sebastian. What the hell was he up to? My thumb hovered over my phone for half a second before I gave in, scrolling to his number and pressing call.He picked up after barely one ring, like he’d been sitting there, waiting for me to call…to cave. "Finally calling me back?" His voice was low, smooth, and tinged with just enough smugness to make my anger rise.I gripped the phone so tightly my knuckles turned white. "What game are you playing, Sebastian? What do you want?" He chuckled softly, the sound only making my blood boil. "Game? I have no idea what you’re talking about. I just saw your art gallery was fundraising and looked a little short

  • My Substitute Husband Regrets Letting Me Go   Chapter 45

Emma’s POVSebastian’s grip loosened once Abigail spoke, just slightly, but it was enough. My heart was racing, and my body moved before I could think. I drove my elbow back as hard as I could, aiming for his stomach. It connected. Sebastian let out a low grunt, staggering back a step, his arms falling away from me as he clutched his abdomen. "Emma!" he gasped, but I didn’t wait to hear whatever excuse or plea he was about to throw at me.I turned and practically bolted to Alex, my legs shaky and weak. Without even pausing to think, I looped my arm through his, clinging to him like he was my saviour or something. My eyes went to Abigail who looked like she was enjoying this. My eyes moved back to Sebastian and I took a deep breath before speaking."Let me introduce you," I said, my voice sharper than I’d intended but loud enough to make Sebastian focus on me. I looked straight at Sebastian, whose face was twisted with a mix of pain and confusion. "This is my boyfriend." Sebastia

Emma's POV“How did you know I was here?” I demanded loudly with a frown. My heart was pounding so loudly I was sure he could hear it.Sebastian stood there, his hands stuffed in the pockets of his leather jacket, looking way too casual for someone who shouldn’t even be here.“Jenny guessed you’d be at Abigail’s and we'll, here you are,” he replied hesitantly, his voice low, but his eyes, those deep gray eyes, never left my face. My stomach twisted at the mention of mom. Of course, she’d tell him. She always thought she knew what was best for everyone, but this? I thought she hated him for me so why would she tell him where I could be.“I can't believe you actually went to see her. Well, congratulations to her for being right. Now leave.” I crossed my arms tightly over my chest. “I don’t need you here, Sebastian. You shouldn't even be here. We’re divorced, remember?” I stepped forward and pushed him toward the door, but he didn’t budge. He stood there like a statue, his shoulders

Emma’s POVMy mom and I hadn’t been close in a while. We weren’t the kind of family that shared Sunday dinners or spoke every day on the phone like normal family members did.My mom had gotten me from the orphanage when I was younger and we moved to a small farm in the rural Southeast, where life was easy and simple, peaceful even.Back then, it felt like the world was no bigger than our little house and the fields out front. But when I left for the city, that life started to feel distant. We grew apart, little by little, until our conversations were just polite check-ins on birthdays or holidays. She didn’t approve of the choices I’d made. Especially when I told her I was marrying Sebastian. We'd had a huge argument about that."He’s not right for you," she had told me, coldly. "You come from two different worlds, Emma. You’re just doing this because of Matthew." Her words stung then, and they still stung now, because for the first time, she was right and I hated that. After the

She was walking with this air of confidence like the world belonged to her even though it didn't.A caretaker trailed beside her, pushing a stroller that looked like it cost more than my first car. Or my second.Abigail nudged me with her elbow, her face scrunched up in confusion. "What are you staring at? Do you know her?" she whispered. I didn’t look away, my eyes locked on Ava as she paused near the desk to adjust her bag. "That’s Ava," I said quietly, but even I could hear the bitterness in my voice. "She’s the reason Sebastian and I ended up like this. The one who'd been staying with us." Abigail’s face darkened immediately, her lips pressing together in a thin line. "Her?" she hissed with more hatred than I expected. She crossed her arms, glaring daggers in Ava’s direction. If looks could kill, Ava would be six feet underground right now.
