I tried to avoid everyone after class but Zara wouldn’t budge. Damian reminded me so much of him. The boy from the masked party… all I saw was blue Sapphire eyes.
“Sarah, you should attend!” Zara grinned mischievously.
“Attend what?” I stared at her for the first time since we entered the school cafeteria. She had ordered french fries and soda, but I’d lost my appetite.
“You didn’t hear a thing I said?” Zara frowned.
“Huh? Sorry, my mind was somewhere else,” I mumbled.
What is wrong with me? My heart has been thumping heavily since my eyes met with his. It isn’t him, and can’t be him. That secret stays between my sister and I. It is long buried.
“What were you saying?”
“I was telling you about the private Damian’s Welcome home party. Only invited persons will be allowed to the party, oh I wished my parents were of their status, I wouldn’t miss it!” She said sadly, munching on her fries.
“Hold on, how can someone who just got into school be hosting a party already? That's clear indication of unseriousness.” I muttered.
Zara rolled her eyes at me “You're quick to judge, he isn’t the one hosting the party. It’s his mom. She loves him alot,”
“Okay?” I sipped from the soda.
Zara looked around before whispering “Yeah, he is the only child and the heir to the Delance Conglomerate. Though news has it that his step-siblings are also interested in that position,”
“Hmm,”
“I heard that his mother slept with her best friend’s husband; Mr Delance, and got pregnant by him. Her best friend, the first wife, hadn't gotten a child for Mr Delance when that happened. So, by default Damian is the first son and would soon take over his father’s wealth,” Zara said
“Okay,” I mumbled half-heartedly.
“I hope he becomes CEO and my husband someday.” Zara said dreamily.
“You too?” I didn’t know my bestfriend was pinning for Damian as well. Zara and I became friends after we were grouped in a school’s competition and won. She was the brightest in class, and we realized that we had a lot in common.
I forced a smile. I can’t hope that she ends up with Damian, because my sister likes him too.
I also can’t hope to end up with him, because I have a boyfriend, Coleman, a school dropout.
Just then, the Flowery girls walked in as all eyes diverted to their direction. They walked stylishly, reeking of class and fashion.
They were the second most troublesome bullies in school, after my sister’s group.
They walked in with Daisy, their leader, in their middle, confronting two outcast girls in the cafeteria.
The girls were talking about Damian and scrolling through his social media accounts when Daisy snatched the phone from them, causing them to gasp.
“what are you doing?" one of them asked in surprise.
She tried collecting the phone from Daisy, but she scoffed and didn't let her. "Can you believe that they were looking at Damian’s pictures?" Daisy teased as she showed the phone to Rose and Iris; her minions.
"These paupers are wasting their time day-dreaming about something that can never be theirs" Iris snorted and they chuckled.
"Well, that's none of your business. Give me back my phone!" The girl cried as the other one only stared at her feet nervously.
"You know what, if I were you, I wouldn't bother going to his party- just in case you might be fantasizing about it, because he might just end up throwing up when he sees your face," Rose said as the whole school burst into laughter. The girls started to cry.
Then Daisy dropped the phone on the floor “oops, it slipped,” she mocked before walking away with her minions.
They came to where Zara and I were seated, and then stopped at our table.
"Move Zara, you’re on our seat" Daisy said to Zara, flaunting her blonde hair.
“But this isn’t where you guys seat,” Zara crossed her arms, ready for a fight. Zara may be that geek girl with big glasses and braces, but she’s bold.
“We can choose to sit wherever we want in this cafeteria,” Daisy retorted angrily.
Their presence annoys me, so I try to avoid them at all costs. I tugged at Zara, insinuating that we leave.
“Your royal highnesses, do with the seats as you want,” Zara said, her voice laced with sarcasm. We picked our food tray to excuse them, when Daisy spoke again.
“Oh, I didn’t see daddy's girl before,” she looked at me like she was seeing me for the first time “Why can’t you be a mummy’s girl or because you have no mummy?” she mocked with a wicked laughter.
Tears clogged my throat but I didn’t do anything. I simply increased my pace.
“You’re not going to do anything right?” Zara muttered, catching up with me “Your sister won’t always fight for you. Learn to stand up for yourself, Sarah!”
“I’ll try.” I promised.
After the cafeteria incident, we attended some classes and then closing hour came.It was the time I always anticipated. Coleman and I always met after school. No one but my chauffeur knew about our frequent arrangement. I strode to the school park, greeted my chauffeur and told him to take to the usual place. Subtly, he shook his head via the rear mirror and said “Sorry ma’am, but your Father just called to instruct me to bring you home immediately after school.” “But why?” I frowned , but he shrugged and started the car. I sighed deeply and called Coleman to reschedule. He was displeased and ended the call with a “I love you,” and still I couldn’t find it in my heart to tell him I loved him too.Zara would always say that I accepted to date Coleman because I was miserable, and lonely. In no time, Idris drove us home, and I saw my Dad in a navy blue suit standing outside the house to receive me.I was stunned and wondered what was happening."Oh! Sarah; you're just in time. I want
I didn't sleep a wink last night. What did they mean by Damian and I getting married? Was it all a ploy to make us befriend each other?I remember how the remaining part of the meeting went. Damian left briskly. I almost did, but had to respect both fathers.Damian’s dad had chuckled at his son’s retreating figure “He knows I wouldn't joke with something this delicate. Not to worry dear, he will do my bidding,”Do his bidding? It got me even more confused. I looked at my Dad for help but he kept smiling sheepishly.“Do take care of yourself, darling” Finally, Mr Delance smiled at me and left. What just happened?“Let me call your sister, we should get going” my Dad said, still grinning from ear to earI stopped him from moving “Dad! What’s going on? What was that supposed to mean?” I stamped my feet at him“Pumpkin,” Dad grinned, holding my shoulders tenderly “Mr Delance and I want you and Damian to get married soon,”My head spun, my eyesight going foggy. A knock at my room door inter
“No way,” I yelled angrily, swearing “that is bullsh!t. I won't marry Damian Delance! I believe in love, and would marry for love!”Dad chuckled devilishly on the wheels as he loosen his neck collar with his left hand. He stamped his feet on the accelerator and drove madly, barely avoiding the cars on the road. “Ahhhhhhh,” a scream escaped my mouth. “Dad, do you want to kill us?” I screamed louder“You think I just want to give my daughters out in marriage?” He muttered through clench teeth “You must see me as a bad father, don't you? Do you think I am happy about this??!” He yelled and drove like a lunatic. Other cars, trees, traffic lights, had become blurry. The wind was choking me.I feared for our lives. “Please, Daddy. Please stop, I’lldo as you want,” as soon as the words left my mouth, the car stopped. Dad leaned over the wheel, “We have gone bank—rupt, Pum— p—kin,” he said with raking shoulders as a loud sob slipped from his lips.I shook my head briefly, not believing what
“Dad told me the news’ true, that Mr Delance’s family pushed the marriage forward. You knew all along, and said nothing to me. It’s all your fault!” she yelled. My hands trembled, I didn’t know whether to cry or laugh hysterical at this new piece of information. I took a deep breath to calm my rumbling emotions. “Please Steph,” I begged “it's not what you think. I didn’t ask for any of this.”“Really?” she sneered at me like some pest beneath her. I swallowed hardly, “If that is true, why didn't you say anything to me? You know how much I love Damian,”“I am sorry that you are just getting to know,” I apologized slowly. “Sorry won't excuse this betrayal!” she yelled, tugging at her hair frantically. Betrayal? I didn’t ask for either for this! I am the victim here.“Fine!” she grabbed my arms roughly “We must come to an agreement; you will end up with Prince Kareem, and I, with Damian Delance,”“What?” My eyes widened. It wasn't enough that I had to have sleepless night with migrain
It was Damian. The human I am to get married to in a few days. What? What was he doing here? I got more jittery than I was.“Yeah, if it’s no other than the boy who gets to marry her,” the bad boy sneered at Damian and his protocols.Damian balled his fist, “Touch her one more time and I will make sure that you rot in prison for a long time,” he threatened. By now, all his minions had deserted him. They stood afar off, telling him to let me go.He hesitatingly released me from his grip “Whatever, Mr singer. Just know that this isn’t over yet, and I rule this school now,” he said, nudging Damian as he walked past. Damian grabbed him by the shoulders and flung him to the floor. It happened so fast that my eyes widened. Woah!“Rule the school for all I care, but you will stay away from this girl. My girl,” Damian thundered, before walking to drag me off.I stared at his profile as we walked past the school corridors into an empty classroom. He— called me his girl. Warmth pooled in my bel
“Stop it!” I screamed “Let go of me, Coleman! Don’t do this!" I cried pushing him off me, but he weighed me down and went for my lips. This time he caught it and pushed his tongue in my mouth.Oh, God! This is not happening to me!!!The smell of danger was choking. His home was in a distant estate and no one would save me.I tried to move away, but he wouldn't let go. He kissed me roughly, and then his hands went under my skirt. “If I don’t have you, nobody else will.” I yelped. Jilted. And tried escaping him but Coleman wasn’t thinking. He wasn’t thinking about me or the consequences that could come from this.He didn’t think about my reputation or his. He wanted to have his way. And his way, he will get.I tried pushing him again, but he pinned both of my hands to the bed and used his left hand to unbutton his shirt. He flung it where his trousers was. I could feel his erection. My eyes zeroed in fear.Tears clogged my eyes, and throat. I hate this sickening feeling. The disgust an
We used one of Dad’s cars, and Mr Idris drove us straight to the venue. "Are you kidding me? Is this a carnival or what?""Whoosh! This was why I wanted us to come on time. Now, the whole place is filled up already," Zara grumbled as Idris found a place to park."This place is too rowdy. I don't like crowds." I protested.“Durrh, you are his fiancee. You should learn to getused to such crowds,” Zara snapped at me.Zara held my hand as we maneuvered through the crowd, and I was amazed at how some girls were looking. Many wore customized shirts with Damian’s name and pictures. Eyeglasses, rings, necklaces, stickers, and even hairbands—all with his name printed on them. Oh heavens! Girls are crazy over my husband-to-be?Zara led me to a spot by the entrance where customized items were sold. She bought a bangle and two light stickers with Damian’s name on them. Wearing the bangle on her wrist, she handed one of the stickers to me."Huh? What are you doing?” I protested"Just take it, Sarah
The next day after Zara and I attended the concert, Dad told me of a meeting with the Delances; that we would be having Dinner with them. In his words, “You will be having dinner with your in-laws in two days time. It will be an opportunity to know the family,”So here I was with Dad, dressed in a shimmering blue gown and walking through the door with a man called “Butler Nook” We were at the Delances Mansion.Butler Nook led us into a little hall, when I barely heard my name and was enveloped in a hug.“Sarah!" I inhaled Damian’s mother’s perfume, it was soothing and I suddenly missed having a mother."Hello, ma'am" I said nervously when she released me from her hold. Then I saw the man beside her. Mr Delance. The amazing father-in-law that went on the internet to talk about my engagement with Damian.“Hello darling,” his eyes lit up with joy as he pulled me in for a hug. But then I didn’t know when I relaxed in his hold. Like, I’m supposed to be cold to him but there was this tender
When Stephanie left the room, Damian came back inside and I told him that I wanted to go home.“If that’s what you want,” Damian chuckled, giving me a beautiful smile as though he wasn’t the one who insisted that I stayed in the hospital till I was completely better.“Yes, that’s what I want.” I stuck my tongue out for him.“Your OB, by the way, visited while you took a nap; before Stephanie came. She’s already arranged a schedule for prenatal checkups.” He said and i beamed widely, reaching out for his neck as I hugged him tightly.“Thank God!” I said.We were both on the bed, as we hugged for a long time. The feeling was heaven for me… and then when we separated, he got something out from his pocket.“Sorry that this was lost for a while, but here it is now.”I fixed my eyes on the velvety box in between his two fingers. And Gosh! When he opened it, I saw the glittering thing inside.“Oh, Damian! My ring!”“I don't want you to be worrying anymore. See? It's been recovered.” I burst i
“Pregnant?” Damian stared at me with blazing light in his eyes. “God! Oh, God!” He grinned widely and touched my stomach. “Is she pregnant, doc?” He looked at the doctor to wait for the latter's statement.“Yes, she is! Congratulations, Mr. Delance! Your wife’s pregnant!” Then, the doctor gave me a happy smile. “There's a new life forming in your womb, young lady. Congratulations!”Oh!I was pregnant... and I didn’t know... I was bringing a new life in my womb --- my baby and Damian’s.Damian and I gazed at each other. He then touched both of my cheeks with his palms.“We're going to have a child soon,” Damian said, just a whisper at first.“Yes, our child...” I repeated with tears in my eyes now.“You're pregnant. I'm gonna be a father soon!” heexclaimed, almost shouting now. I had never seen him this excited, especially when he threw a fist on the air. Next, he started jumping and screaming happily in the room. I felt so emotional, even when he came back and started peppering my fa
“Hypertension… but he’s alright now. Don’t worry about him. He’s okay.Trust me, Baby.” He saidOh, God! There was no need for me to ask why Dad had a hypertension attack. It was clear that it was because of what happened to me. Oh, Dad! After holding strong for Stephanie, then this happened to me. We are all he has.“What? I want to see my Dad. Please, let me see him,Damian,” I pleaded, seeking his hand.“Ssshhh, calm down, Baby. Dad’s okay. It wasn't serious at all. They simply had him admitted so he could rest from the worry, and thoughts… Just trust me, okay?”Well, I trusted him. If he says Dad was okay, I trusted him. I closed my eyes and imagined Dad’s relaxed face.“You'll see him soon... just not right now. We have to make sure first of your health.” I heard Damian say.My health? Why, what happened? But I feel fine.Flashing back my thoughts on what happened, I recalled Zara, her craziness, and...“Damian,” I cried out, opening my eyes.“Yes?” He locked his gaze on me.“My ri
Books. Lots of Books.I was in a paradise with so many books. The winds caressed sweetly and I was in awe of the beauty around me. I loved it here. Then I heard a voice calling me. A masculine voice that was so familiar to me. A voice that seemed to come from far, far away… but no matter how far it was from me, the voice persisted to call me… to come back to him.“Baby!”Huh? I turned and I saw no one. Then I bent to flip the pages of one of the books around me. Somehow everything here soothened me. It felt like home, where I belong. From a distance, I heard a girl’s voice. “Gemi…”The voice seemed to be following me.“Stephanie!” I called her out. “Gemi…”“Steph,”Then there was darkness again.***“Baby! Please come back!” I heard that voice again. I was back in the paradise, with a pile of books stuck in front of me. I looked at the alluring peaceful place.“Baby!”Damian?“Wake up, please,” he pleaded.Wake up?I looked ahead and didn’t see the books anymore. I was in a place I
I opened my eyes to an unfamiliar room.My whole back was pressed to the surface of a chair, and so I had my eyes to the door. Then it dawned on me that both of my legs and arms were tied with ropes to each sides of the chair, and it was almost impossible for me to escape. My mouth was tied up with something so tight to my skin, which I presumed to be a duct tape. Where was I?Then everything came flashing back, the sneaking out of home, Zara’s house, the warthog mask… The same mask the person who tried to kill me wore…Just then, the door creaked open and in came the girl who had been the one causing me mishaps, Zara. This time she was dressed in a yellow top over gray joggers. “Oh darling, you’re finally up. I was hoping not to kill you in your sleep.” She said. My eyes widened in horror. I wanted to speak but my lips was still taped together. How could she do this to me? What did I ever do to her?We were best friends!Tears started to roll down my cheeks. I felt so scared, hurt
“Sure,” I told her. Damian sighed and palmed a hand over his forehead. When the call ended, I turned to him. “What?” “You can’t go to Zara’s house. You can’t go anywhere yet, it’s too dangerous,” Damian protested.“It’s been a month since the whole thing, it’s my best friend. I’ll be fine.” I said“No,” Damian shook his head “we still don’t know who these bad people are. We don’t know who the boss is,”“Don’t worry, I’ll be safe. I’ll go and come back in a blink of an eye,” I smiled“Fine, if you must go, i’ll come with you,” Damian saidI shook my head vigorously “not a chance, I’ll just go with some of the bodyguards.”“Then forget it. I won’t let you leave the house,” he said through clenched teeth. My eyes narrowed “don’t be difficult, Zara was in my life before you.”Damian jaw clenched tightly. He just turned and left me standing there. Only then did I realize that I had spoken wrongly. He was just trying to look out for me. I hurried after him but Damian completely ignored him
“So, how’s the investigation going?” Damian’s Dad asked over dinner. They decided to spend the night with us. It was just the four of us under the bright chandelier.“Uhm, there’s been no concrete lead yet,” Damian said, dropping his fork and cleaning his mouth with the napkin.Damian’s Dad chewed onto the beef gently, “how about Stephanie, Sarah’s sister?”Guilt settled in the pit of my stomach. Large arms quickly enclosed over mine, I looked up to meet Damian’s eyes. He smiled reassuringly and said “We believe she is recuperating, and when the time is right, we would get to talk with her,”“That’s good news,” His mom chipped in.“Yeah,” I murmured “so, how’s everyone at home? Loxie, Duke, Bernie and the rest?” I asked, eager to change the topic.“Oh, they’re all good.” Damian’s mom voice was high pitched. We all weren’t going to talk about Ruth…She continued “Well, Loxie moved out,”“Why?”“She called off her engagement with Duke,” she replied. My eyes widened with horror, and somew
It felt like we were back to the beginning. Why did Susan attempt suicide?Damian said she was rushed to the hospital, and that there was slim chance that she was going to survive it. Her pulse was very faint when they found her. The camp was officially ruined. Everyone else was sent back home. However, Mr Martins thinks that the Mysterious boss and the person who tried to kill me might be one person. He also thinks that Stephanie have might a clue on who this person is.With that, he made sure policemen were stationed around Stephanie’s ward, and in the hospital.Dad didn’t let Damian and I to see Stephanie after our visit at the police station. He told us to go home, and that he was going to watch over Stephanie, and notify us of any improvement. My eyes fluttered open in our bedroom, and I saw Damian sitting by the bedside. I wondered why he wasn’t on the bed with me. He looked really sad and was clasping my hands in his.My mind went back to when we returned, and Damian stayed out
“Now, who do we have here? The Iconic Sarah and her husband,” Josef Moore chuckled the moment we walked in “just the people I want to see,”“So, young man. You’ve had your wish. Here she is. Start speaking!” Mr Martin slammed his fist on the table.Josef didn’t flinch. He relaxed boldly on his chair. “You don’t remember me, do you?” he asked me.I stared intently at him “Nope,” I answered, sitting opposite him. For whatever reason, I wasn’t scared of this guy. Maybe it had to do with being with Damian, or in the police station. Maybe…“Do you remember the little boy you reported to your Dad?” he asked with a smirk. Damian and Mr Martins stood beside me.“A little boy?” I frowned He sat up and leaned closer, his elbows on the table. I spotted a little scar beneath his eyelids.“Oh, let me guess… good girl had life easy for her. No wonder she doesn’t remember the life of the little boy she ruined,”“I beg your pardon,” my eyes narrowed. Damian made to advance threateningly at Josef but
