Emily’s POV.
As soon as the clock on my nightstand hits 5 PM, I push the duvet off myself and scramble into the ensuite. I have been waiting for the longest time for my alarm to blare off since I got a tip-off from my adopted sister, Brenda. Brenda is sick, and I always give in to her demands at every turn which our parents tacitly agree to, but thanks to her kind gesture, I soon forget my resentment towards her. This morning, she passed me an invitation to Oliver’s party for tonight. I had wondered the reason my adopted sister would be inviting me to my own boyfriend’s party until she revealed it was a surprise engagement party and since then, I have been anxious. Oliver and I have been dating for three years and although he has been closed off most of the time, I give him a plus thanks to his ability to keep a good number of our dates, and this surprise engagement party he is throwing me. It’s been long overdue. I hop into the shower to exfoliate first. I need my skin glowing when Oliver pops the question and slips the ring into my finger. I pick out the most expensive outfit I own in my closet; it is The Andamane Providence detailed shoulder midi dress in brown, Oliver’s favourite colour of me. It is only right that I wear it. Next, I sit in front of my dresser to do a quick makeup before releasing my black waist-length wavy hair from the net. One glance at the mirror and I know I’m ready for this evening. It’s 7 PM by the time I arrive at the DELUXE event centre. I had earlier checked on Brenda for the party but was told that she left the house two hours ago. It’s strange she isn’t coming to my party after passing the invite to me. I take a deep breath in, release it two seconds later and give myself a pep talk before venturing into the building. I show my invitation card and go through the security outside the hall before I’m allowed in. I am surprised to see a bunch of people whom I do not recognize, in fancy clothes and expensive accessories and immediately, something feels off to me. My priority is finding Oliver in this sea of people, so I stop a passing waiter and grab a glass of champagne from his tray. “Excuse me, have you seen Oliver?” As soon as I posed that question, the waiter looked past my shoulder and pointed to the distance. Immediately, I follow his outstretched arm to the stage and what my eyes see, plant my feet on the floor. My eyes blink as my jaw drops in shock. Oliver is all smiles with Brenda’s hand hooked around his left arm. My adopted sister and my boyfriend are whispering happily to each other while I stand in the crowd watching them with a mix of confusion and shock. Immediately, I drop the glass of champagne and don’t care what anyone thinks of me as I push my way past the number of people in front of me to the stage. I am almost out of breath by the time I stop in front of the ‘couple’. Oliver looks shocked to see me with his brows shooting to the top of his head. On the other hand, I catch a smug smile at the corner of Brenda’s lips. At the same time, she lifts her left hand and plants it on my boyfriend’s biceps and that is when I catch the diamond ring on her middle finger which she intended for me to see. Rage brews like an incoming storm in my belly as I finally wrap my head around Brenda’s orchestrated plan within a minute. My boyfriend threw my adopted sister an engagement party and in turn, she invited me without his knowledge. She told me it was a surprise engagement party, and thinking about it now, she never said it was for me. She meant that I would be surprised by the party and I must say that I’m indeed shocked. “Emily, what are you doing here?” Oliver asks me with a hint of annoyance in his tone as he finally recovered from the shock of seeing me. I point at their interlocked arms and ask as my gaze moves between them, “What is the meaning of this?” I don’t need a mirror to see I already have a death glare on. Instantly, Brenda wipes the smug off her lips and pretends to be apologetic and afraid of me. “I-I…” she stammers, seemingly unable to get words off her lips as the crowd turns their heads towards our direction. Their chattering dies down as they try to understand what is going on. “Don’t say a thing. I will explain to her.” Oliver quickly hushes her with the softest gaze I have ever seen on him. Something pricks my heart realizing what that means. He loves her. In my anguish, Oliver turns his attention to me. “I know I should have said this sooner, but Brenda is the woman I love, not you.” Alarm bells went off in my head as I suddenly lost my mind. I don’t think twice before grabbing Oliver by his maroon-coloured suit. “You beast!” I scream, eliciting strong whispers from the crowd behind me. My eyes are red as I stare hard at Oliver who throws his gaze around. I know he is ashamed and can’t wait to throw me out of his party for ruining it. “How could you do this to me? What about our family’s agreement?” I finish regardless of his thoughts. “I don’t care about any of that!” Oliver raises his voice at me as Brenda flinches by his side and taps his arm. He fixes an apologetic gaze on her and she leans her face towards his ear. I don’t hear what she whispers to him, but the next moment, he grabs my wrist. “Come with me,” he said, but I immediately wriggled my hand out of his grip. “Don’t you dare touch me!” I warn as I release his suit. The part I grabbed looks crumbled and I couldn't care less about it. “You’ve been cheating on me with my sister and today, you engaged her and invited me to see. How could you be so evil?!” “Keep your voice down!” A vein pops in his forehead as he tries to keep me from embarrassing him further. “Are you trying to force yourself on me? What part of ‘I don’t love you’ do you not understand? Our families had an agreement, and I am also fulfilling it by choosing to be with the woman I love.” I stagger a little as a scoff escapes my lips. I can’t believe he is saying all this to me. This isn’t the Oliver I used to know. While I’m reeling in the shock, he steps closer to me and whispers in the voice only I can hear, “I checked your medical records and saw that your kidney matches Brenda’s. If you give one to her, I promise to marry you.” As soon as I heard that, I didn’t think twice before lifting my hand and this time around, I made sure to land a tight slap on his cheek and enjoy the sound echo in the hall as everyone stills.Shame overwhelms me as two men in black and a white earpiece connected to their left ear grab each of my arms and drag me away the minute my palm connects to Oliver’s cheek. Between the feeling of betrayal and disgrace, I don’t know which one is stronger as I scream at Oliver and kick my feet with all my might as I am taken away like a criminal at my own boyfriend’s engagement party to my adopted sister.Pain claws at my heart as hot tears stream down my blush-patted cheeks. I don’t think I will be getting over this treachery any time soon, especially watching Brenda lean her frail body on Oliver while directing a victorious smirk my way. I am helpless as I get kicked out of the hall and the double tall wooden doors shut in my face with pairs of wandering eyes from the passer-byes in the corridor on me. I need a drink before I kill someone and end up in jail so I flag down a cab outside. After a restless long ride of fifteen minutes, the driver pulls over in front of the exclu
7 AM.The sound of my alarm wakes me with a splitting headache. I feel a dull ache between my thighs as I fumble for my phone to turn off the blaring noise with a hand on my forehead. It is not until I hear a deep breath exhale behind me that I suddenly realize where I am. The memories from last night’s events come crashing into my head as horror fills my gaze.I slowly turn around to see the handsome face of the man who took me to the realm of ecstasy and pain last night. I am almost distracted by his looks.I can’t believe I slept with a stranger last night. I will never say he forced himself on me. Indeed, he seemed pretty much out of it, plus I was so drunk and heartbroken, so the sex naturally happened, but why do I regret my actions now?My eyes brim with hot tears as I think back to everything I’ve been through in less than twenty-four hours. Although it’s nothing compared to what I’ve suffered all my life, I can’t help but cry within me.In a moment of weakness, I emba
‘Oh. Good. Lord!’ I cry in my head. I can literally feel everything inside of me screaming to duck or maybe open the elevator doors and run away, especially when he gives me a stare. If not anything, he looks taken aback by my reaction, and that’s when I recall my mouth is open. I close it before it can swallow a fly. The man standing before me is tall, has broad shoulders, a clean-shaven beard. His hair is sleeked backwards in a Pompadour style and he’s dressed in an expensive grey suit. I know I shouldn’t be paying so much attention to him, but he is hunky and exudes a powerful aura. I can’t believe he is the same man I slept with last night. Although he screams all shades of perfect, I am upset I gave my first time to a total stranger when I wasn't even ready for it. But most importantly, I wonder what he’s doing here at TRANSCORP. He looks away from me and fixes his gaze on the door as he shoves his hands inside his pants pockets. Clearly, he doesn’t recognize me oth
No matter the level of anger currently swirling in my chest like a jolt of electric current, I refuse to utter a word to Barbara Collins. It is hard for me to pretend to be unaffected by the revelation she just made, and I am almost about to lose my mind by merely sitting next to her.The air she breathes constitutes a lot of nuisance to me, and I personally think it should be cut off. Permanently.I grit my teeth and keep my gaze on Stella who is standing behind a podium sorting through some files. As we had earlier uploaded our resumés while applying for this vacant position through the mail, we were not required to come for the interview with any other document besides our ID. This is why I had no reason to go straight home from the club to pick anything.“Good morning, everyone,” Stella greets, immediately calling our attention to her. “As I earlier introduced myself, I am Stella, the current personal assistant, the position you all are vying for.”‘Oh!’ I mouth. I thought s
My worst fears don’t come true when Christopher Moore looks away from me. I release a deep breath I don’t know I’ve been holding. It will be terrible if he recognizes me.I am currently having a big battle with my mind on whether to go ahead with the interview for the position or not.It doesn’t feel normal to closely work with a man I had casual sex with. Everything screams awkward in my ears, but my current financial situation keeps fighting back.“Can we start the interview now?” He says to Stella who quickly agrees and introduces him to us.“…The interview lasts five minutes for each person. As soon as you hear your name from the speaker, please make your way into the room across. Thank you.”Stella and Mr. Moore head out first, leaving us to ourselves. Before Babara can turn to me, I stand up and move my chair to the end of the room until several minutes later.I’m the last person to enter the room across and when I do, Stella asks me to take my seat which I do.The inte
Christopher’s POV. 8:15 AM. With eyes narrowing and brows furrowing, I make a stop at the front desk on my way out of the club. I woke up naked this morning with spots of semen on my thighs and the bed. Someone definitely came into my room while I was delirious. “Who let a woman into my room?” I demand with an icy tone as my gaze moves between the two people behind the desk. I watch them exchange confused glances and something flashes in my eyes. Wrath. I don’t want to believe they don’t know what I’m talking about. This is an exclusive club and no one, I mean no one has permission to get into my bedroom without my consent unless they get the keycard from the management and I think that’s exactly what happened. I don’t have time to stall so I demand to see the CCTV footage from my room door last night but I don’t mind showing up late for the interview or leaving everything to Stella. “We are sorry, Sir. Unfortunately, the policy set by the management does not al
Emily's POV I didn’t think Barbara would be waiting outside the building for me because as soon as I step out, she rushes towards me. She just doesn’t know when to give up. “I saw the smirk you gave me earlier. Don’t rejoice so soon because I will definitely get this position and stomp all over your face!” Barbara says, stopping in front of me as she glances me up and down. “You lost your boyfriend to your adopted sister. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to lose this position as well. You know, celebrating double losses would be perfect instead of one.” For the records, Barbara is talking about the look I gave her after Mr. Moore crushed her confidence. I didn’t even know she saw it. Also, I had no idea she knew what happened to me at that party yet presented the situation to Mr. Moore like I was caught fighting Brenda for her man. At this point, I’m not even thinking for myself. Anyone but Barbara can secure the position of Personal Assistant to the CEO of Transcorp. I know
I nod before quickly saying to her, “Please, can you get me some ice?” She stares at me for a moment and then follows my gaze to the spot my hands are clutching, a deep sigh escapes her lips. “Give me two minutes,” she says and turns on her heels to leave and I’m grateful for that. By the time I finish giving my swollen ankle a cold water compress and limp into the dining hall, Dad, Mum and Brenda are already sitting around the table. I walk into Mum putting food on Brenda’s plate with so much love in her eyes. I have never seen her gaze at me that way. “Why are you limping? What happened to your leg?” At Dad’s question, I pull my thoughts together as Mum and Brenda cast their glance at me. They look surprised at first before Brenda withdraws her gaze. Mum fixes a stare on me. “Don’t mind her. She is always trying to seek our attention. Go on with your food.” Dad’s gaze pierces through me like an arrow. I know he is waiting for an answer from me, so I give him one as I
