KAYLA
The morning light seeped through my windows, beaming gently on my face. At first, I covered my face with my pillow, trying to avoid the light and then, I rolled to the other side of the bed… tired from so much exhaustion. Suddenly, I remembered that today was a special day, my birthday. I yawned and sat on the bed, feeling a sense of excitement. I was finally eighteen!I got up and stretched, feeling the stiffness in my muscles from sleeping in an uncomfortable position. As I walked over to my window, I couldn't help but admire the beautiful view outside. The sun was rising, painting the sky with shades of orange and pink– it was a relief that at least something was colorful today. I stared blankly into space before I went to curl up on my bed.I was startled by the knock on my door.” I'm coming to get the door,” I said, as I groggily got out of bed and made my way to the door. It was one of the Gamma, the head servant.“And what in the moon goddess name are you still doing in bed? It's morning already and there are chores to be done around the pack. The pack wouldn't clean itself, would it?” she said, raising her eyebrows in a mock-serious manner. I nodded, “I would attend to them shortly,”. The other servants always reminded me of my duties and responsibilities, as if I could I would forget them. She glared at me, “Then keep it moving,”“Please… Would you kindly allow me a few minutes to take my bath?” I asked, hoping for some time to myself before the busy day ahead. She was silent for a while,” Alright, I would give you time to freshen up, but you have less than ten minutes,” she replied firmly before turning and walking away.I closed the door, and slumped onto the bed. I buried my face in my hands and sighed– my chest throbbed with pain. Just then, I quickly remembered I had less than ten minutes and jumped out of the bed, after which I rushed into the bathroom and had a quick shower. I wasn't about to get into trouble today…I made my way to the servants waiting area where the other servants received instructions from the head servants, “Hurry now, don't be a slug!” She thundered, with hands akimbo.I hastened my step and stood with the other servants who waited for her instructions. She gave instructions to the other slaves and finally, she turned to me. “Kayla, I need you to start by cleaning the kitchen. It's a mess that requires a thorough scrubbing. Make sure to clean every surface, and don't forget to wipe down the counters and stove,” the head servant said.I nodded slightly, "Okay”.It felt bad that not one single person in the pack knew that it was my birthday, and what was worse was the number of duties that were being assigned to me on my special day.“And when you finish with the kitchen, move on to the living room. Dust everything, including the shelves and the mantel, and most importantly don't forget to vacuum the carpet, it's too dusty. And also, be sure to tidy up any misplaced items,” she continued.“Yes, I understand, I'll make sure to clean it properly” I said, trying to sound as respectful as possible.“Good, Finally, I need you to clean the guest room. Change the sheets and make the bed, and don't forget to dust and vacuum. And you have to be fast about it, The hallway and the entryway requires tidying up too,” she concluded.“Alright, I'll get right on it,” I said, starting to head towards the kitchen. She called out to me as I turned to leave, “Kayla…”, I turned to face her, and she looked at me from my head down to my toes. “Make sure you do the chores properly, I'm sure you would not want to get into trouble with either of the quadruplets,” She said in mockery while I shook my head and without a word, turned to leave. As I was cleaning, my thoughts wandered to my mother. I remembered how she would always celebrate my birthday, making me feel special and loved. I missed her so much, and tears started to stream down my face. Likewise, I tried to hold myself together, but the pain in my heart was too much to bear. Since her death, I've always known pain, but the pain of having to celebrate my birthday like an outcast without her made it unbearable. Not even the Alpha King whom she called a husband treated me like his child. It was horrible to witness such change right after her demise…Once i was done. I hurriedly made my way back to my quarters. I sauntered back to my room, and as I packed my few belongings into a small backpack, I knew I was finally leaving the pack. This was it; I had had enough of the taunts, the abuse, and the constant reminder that I was an outcast, even if I was only the innocent stepdaughter to the Alpha King.I looked around the small outlet I called room one last time, and made my way towards the door, but just as I was about to leave, I remembered my mother's last words to me.“Kayla, my child,” she had said weakly. “On your eighteenth birthday, go to my room and look for a locked box. Inside you will find something that will change your life. Promise me you will do this.”I wanted to ignore her words and leave. This was my only opportunity of escape, but something kept nagging at the back of my mind. My mother had always been a woman of her word, and if she asked me to do something, it was important I carried out her instructions.I carefully sneaked out of my room with my backpack, making sure to avoid the other wolves as I made my way towards my mother's room. When I got there, I hesitated for a moment before slowly turning the doorknob and pushing the door open.I hesitated to open the door as I stood in front of it, staring blankly at the heavy old wood with scratches and cobwebs at its corner– my heart raced with countless thoughts. The lock looked rusted and ancient, adding to the mystery of what lay beyond. I took a deep breath and turned the key, the sound of the lock echoing throughout the silent room.It was time to find what she said would change my life…KAYLA.With trembling hands, I pushed the door open, ignoring the cold, eerie air that hit me right on the face. The room was dark, with no windows or source of light, and I squinted my eyes to adjust to the darkness of the room. I could hear my breaths in the quietness, and the creaking of the wooden floorboards under my feet. It felt like a thousand eyes were watching me, and every shadow seemed to hide a monster waiting to pounce and tear me into shreds.I walked gingerly around the room, supporting myself with the couch and the small ray of light that seeped in through a crack in the wall.“Argh!” I groaned in muffled tones as I hit my foot on an object and stumbled slightly. I quickly covered my mouth. I couldn't afford to be caught– I would be food for the bears if I'm caught in here. I looked down to see an old rug, covered in dust and cobwebs. The room was a mess. The furniture was draped in sheets and spiderwebs, as if no one had been in here for years. I slowly made my way a
KAYLA.“Please, Father, forgive me. I had no idea that it was a banned compartment”, I pleaded, with my voice trembling in fear and pain. I should have been out of this place but the words of my mother and the letter made me realize that that might be a dream which wouldn’t come to pass anytime soon. I would continue to be subjected to the same old fate– rejection and punishment. I knelt before the Alpha king-my step Father, vulnerable and helpless as he towered over me. He looked at me with a cold, stern expression as he spoke in a deep voice. It was hard to think of how swift it was for people to change. I could still recall how sweet he was the day my mother and I moved into the pack house as his new family. He had treated me so nicely that I found a father in him…something I never had. All of that changed the moment my mother passed… "You have committed a grave offense by entering into that room. And as such, you will be punished. You would kneel under the sun until it sets. M
KAYLAAs the sun began to set, the guard watching me finally spoke, “You can go now, Kayla. It's dusk, unless of course you want to take over my job,” he grinned mischievously.I felt a wave of relief wash over me as I collapsed onto the ground, my legs feeling like jello. “Thank you,” I managed to say between gasps for air– for a while, I thought I was going to die whilst kneeling.I slowly got up, my body ached, and my legs were shaky from staying under the scorching sun for so long. I started making my way back to my room. Just then, my mind went back to the scenario that happened earlier with my stepbrothers– I couldn't imagine being mates with them, the price I would pay if I was found out sent shivers down my spine.I walked back to my room, lost in my thoughts and unaware of my surroundings, that I bumped into someone. “Ugh,” I groaned and looked up to see Jason, standing before me, with his eyes as cold as ice. Jason hissed spitefully, “You clumsy little witch!”I moved bac
KAYLAI was shivering at this point, just as I shifted my gaze to each of the boys. They appeared to be quite startled as well, even if they concealed it with a fierce look.A meeting never happens in such manner, except if it was something bothersome or serious.“What has happened, father?” Ethan asked as he turned to look at me. He quickly darted his eyes the moment our eyes met, but that almost gave him away.“Does he know that we are mates?” I asked myself as I went ahead to study him.Ethan was the quietest of the quad. He loved reading anything he laid his hands on it, and most times, his brothers used that to taunt him. They would always say that he got bad eyes because he always wanted to read a book. He had brown eyes, was tall, muscular, with well-built strong arms. Furthermore, he was handsome, with a pointy nose and short black hair. I blinked my eyes immediately and took in a deep breath, silently scolding myself for getting distracted by his features.“Yes, father. You
Ethan’s PovI still found it hard to recover after what happened earlier today. How was it possible that my step-sister was my mate? I heard my wolf loud and clear when he said “mate!”.And there was Kayla…my step-sister, staring at us and also wondering what might have happened. I was shocked to my bones as I stared at my brothers who quickly wore a stern gaze, as though nothing happened to them. We all left the scene, but I was so bothered that I could barely relax. At this, I sent them a mind link, calling on them to meet with me as this was an emergency. They all rushed into my room the next minute…clearly concerned about whatever it was I had to say.“Tell me that it’s not the same for you all?” I asked the three of them, gazing into their eyes that carried both worry and confusion.Jake scoffed and folded his hand, still shocked from what had happened.“Kayla is our mate?” Jake yelled out of his lungs and suddenly started laughing aloud.Mason walked closer to me and held my
Jason’s PovEverything about Kayla pissed me to the core. The fact that her mother’s presence drifted my father’s attention away from my brothers and I was part of the reasons. My mother had just died a few years earlier, and I had thought that my father would stay without bringing in another Luna. To my utmost surprise, he had brought Kayla and her mother the very next year. The smiles on their faces were heart-wrenching and I couldn’t help but think of how to get rid of them.Kayla tried so hard to come closer as a sister, but I was never going to give her a chance. Somehow, I was glad her mother went off the picture so fast. Especially because it made my father realize that he had sons to take care of. It was strange to discover that she turned out to be my mate. I had no belief in things like that. But then, the voice of my wolf was so loud and clear in my head. “Mate!” He had called out earlier just as I walked closer to meet Kayla, who was kneeling on the ground. That partic
Kayla’s PovThat was so typical of Jason. He never stopped yelling at me, right from the moment I came into the pack with my mother. I had no idea of why he was so blunt and cruel, but that was none of my business. All I wanted was his care and love, but clearly, nothing like that was going to happen. “I just want to know if they know that we are mates”, I whispered to my wolf who was clearly sad and dejected with how Jason spoke to me earlier. It was a long day already and clearly not how I wanted my eighteenth birthday to do. But then, I felt glad that I was able to lay my hand on a piece that came from my mother: the letter.I picked it out of my pocket and stared at it for another time.“How am I meant to spend my life here at the pack? Everything seems to be turning against me and I have no one to back me up”, I cried bitterly, staring into the last picture of my mother which I still had in my possession. After minutes of being solemn, I took a long bath and went ahead to sle
JAKELast night was a lot for me to handle. Starting off from the discovering that Kayla was my mate and then, having a meeting with the Alpha. It was a slow day, and the worst was that it came with a change in feelings and emotions. The moment I learned that Kayla was my mate, I felt a sudden swirl of excitement and the utmost need to take care of her.My heart stung when I thought of the different times we were bad to her, and I couldn’t help but feel the guilt that wrapped around my shoulders. And so, when I observed that she had gone into Jason’s room, I knew that there was a need to trail her and ensure her safety.Just as I had thought, Jason was at the verge of strangling her…with his pair of cold stone eyes that held no emotions. The rage that swelled inside of me was nothing close to what I had witnessed before. I warned Jason sternly and even if he held no remorse, I was certain that he won’t try that again.Still in my state of shock and confusion, I made my way to the min
