Cal's POV

Her eyes bore into mine, doe-like and glossing over. She wanted to say something—I knew she did—but she didn’t. Her gaze tore away, but I held onto her all the same.

"Lena, you don't have to pretend with me," I said softly.

I could tell that the party was a lot for her, and I could relate to the social anxiety that parties like this tended to induce. And even though she looked put back together now, I swore I heard her puking when I got to the door.

I had waited to knock to try and make her feel like I wasn't invading her space. It would just embarrass her further to know that I had heard it all…

My words were meant to comfort Lena, but right in front of my eyes, I watched her gaze return to mine, sharp and piercing.

She pulled her arm out of my grip. "What's that supposed to mean?"

Oh, crap. Her voice was irritated now. What had I said wrong? I thought I was helping her, that we—

I shook my head. "I, uh, I don't know. I just meant that I am here for

Lena's POVMy eyes stared at the door of the study that my father had just walked into. Part of me wanted to go in to see what they were talking about, or maybe just to be close with Cal again."Would you like another, madam?" a waiter asked as he walked by with the glasses of wine."Yes, please," I said as I grabbed another one and gave him my empty glass."Geez, Lena, slow down," Emily cautioned with a laugh, though she sounded a little concerned.I couldn't blame her, I was definitely feeling a good buzz and probably shouldn't drink anymore. They were just going down so well and they were making me feel so much better—which made it hard to stop."Okay, okay, last one," I replied, bringing the glass up to my lips.Emily laughed in response.I looked around at the rest of the room and found that it was just Emily and I left now. Our mum and dad had said goodbye and walked everyone out. Mum was probably off making sure the staff knew that everyone was gone and l

Lena's POVMy head throbbed as I slowly blinked away the remnants of a restless sleep. Sunlight streamed through the curtains, casting a warm glow on the disheveled aftermath of last night's engagement party. The memory of my parents' extravagant celebration for Cal and me rushed back like a whirlwind. And my conversation with Charles.I groaned and rolled over in the bed as the feelings of guilt and self consciousness hit me again. The feelings weren't quite as impactful since I was no longer drunk, but that didn't mean they didn't hurt.I opened my eyes, realizing that something was missing. Cal.Sitting up, I looked around, but Cal was definitely no longer in my bed, which made me feel even more depressed. He had agreed to spend the night with me, and then I had pushed him down onto the bed, but before it could go any further than that or anything could happen, he put a stop to it. Cal had said that I was too drunk and upset, and that he just wanted me to get some

Lena's POV"Oh goodness, Emily!" I yelled out reaching for her arm. "What's wrong?"She looked at me, her expression a mix of hurt and confusion. I wondered if she knew about what happened last night. Did Charles tell her? Would Charles really spoil his own proposal just to vent to his girlfriend?"I think Charles is cheating on me," she said, fresh tears welling in her eyes.Well, that wasn't what I expected."What?" I asked, flabbergasted. "How-Why do you think that?""I just do," she cried, stepping further into my room. "I already told you he's been acting distant lately. It's like he's hiding something. And then he was gone all night last night and didn't message me at all. He could have been at a girl's house for all I know."Nope. He was here…chewing my ass out.Relief washed over me nonetheless, because I realized she was wrong. Charles wasn't cheating on her. He was just trying to figure out how to make her proposal special after I stole his thunder.

Cal's POVI hadn't even realized I was going to do it until it already was happening. But there I was. Kissing Lena. And wow, did it feel amazing. Just like our kiss in front of the paparazzi, the heat started to build as she seemed to melt into me. Kissing Lena was unlike kissing any other girl before, and I never wanted it to stop.It had to stop though. What the hell was I doing?Using all of my willpower, I pulled away from her and those delicious lips. Both of us were breathing hard, as I stepped back. Her grip tightened on me though, and I wasn't able to step away completely. My eyebrows raised as I looked down at her in my arms. However, she seemed to notice what she was doing and blushed as she pulled away from me.Why had I kissed her? And why didn't she pull away?I was sure that I knew the reasons, but I still wasn't ready to admit it to myself…"Sorry," I said quietly. "My emotions were just heightened. I don't know what I was doing.""Oh, okay."

  • My Politically Arranged Marriage   Chapter 19 : We've Sprung a Leak

Lena’s POVOver the next few days, I found myself caught in the whirlwind of our newfound celebrity status. The London tabloids and BBC had all aired multiple stories of mine and Cal's relationship, causing more and more people to notice us when we went out.I wasn't royalty, but that didn't stop everyone from being obsessed with my love life.We had a few scheduled guest appearances to solidify our hold in the UK. One of the largest was the prospect of an interview on the raunchy late night talk show, "Christian After Dark," hosted by the notorious celebrity Christian Michaels. The interview loomed on our agenda, triggering my stomach to turn into knots. I hesitated as I contemplated the interview offer. My natural instinct was to shy away from the raucous and personal topics that Christian's show was renowned for. But Cal, my current voice of reason, reminded me of our need for publicity to prove the authenticity of our relationship. "We can't hide forever, Lena," Ca

  • My Politically Arranged Marriage   Chapter 20 : Planning a Date

Lena's POVI felt the drool pooled at the side of my mouth on the moving surface I was laying on as I slowly woke up. Moving, I attempted to move my hand to wipe my mouth, but found my hand locked in another. My eyes shot open and I was suddenly wide awake. I was laying on my bed, and Cal was still trapped beneath me. His chest was moving at a steady up and down pattern, lifting my head up and down, convincing me that he was still asleep. And across his stomach was my hand, covered with his own hand.My heart started beating faster in my chest, and I prayed I was right and that he was asleep so that he didn't hear how much he was affecting me. Laying this close to him was unnerving in the best way.I suddenly found myself wishing that we didn't have quite so many clothes on. I wanted to feel his skin on mine.Unable to stop myself, I slowly slid my hand out of his and dragged it down his shirt, aiming for the edge of the fabric. I was so focused on my task of getting

Lena's POVThe Victorian glasshouse of the Kew Gardens was standing in front of me, and as the sun was fading, I could see the little faerie lights sparkling through the whole building.Cal's hand softly touched the center of my back and I looked up at him. Instead of looking confident though, like I expected, he looked a little anxious."I reserved it for just us, everyone else is gone," Cal replied, as if trying to sell the date. "I just thought it would be nice for us to walk around the gardens and have a little alone time."I was quiet as I continued to stare at the building in front of me, soaking up the golden hues that were reflecting from the sunlight on the glass. Even from the outside, it was mesmerizing."If you don't like it we can just go out to dinner or something," Cal suggested."Don't be ridiculous!" I squealed, clapping my hands together. "This is perfect! Are you serious?""Really?" Cal's voice changed from anxious to excited."Definitely, the

Cal's POVMy heart felt lighter than ever as I woke up to find the beautiful woman still tucked beside me.Last night, between the date and the sex, was the best night of my life by far. I never thought another person, let alone a woman, would ever bring this much joy into my life.As much as I tried to deny it, the more time I spent with Lena, the more I fell for her. She surprised me at every turn.Like when she threw her shoes in the back of the car. Growing up in the spotlight meant most of the women I was involved in cared about what they looked like and would never do something like that.Lena was different.I tried to brush a few of the rose petals that we hadn't bothered to clean up off of the blanket by my face. She stirred underneath me and I froze. I wasn't ready for her to wake up. I wasn't sure if she was going to regret what we did again…I didn't. Not this time. This time was different. Cal's POVI was in such a rush to leave the house that I didn't notice Daniel standing outside and smacked right into him."Geez, you're supposed to help me, not take me out," Daniel said, straightening himself."Sorry," I replied, my words just as rushed as my actions."What's the rush?" Daniel asked, his joking demeanor changing for a serious look. He had noticed my down attitude the last couple days and had been trying to cheer me up, but now that jokester was gone."I'm going to get Lena," I said matter-of-factly, and despite the nerves in my chest and stomach, a smile spread across my face.A responding smile crossed Daniel's."About time," he stated, then fished in his pockets until he pulled some keys out. "Take my bike and go get her."I stared at him in surprise for a moment, but then the rush I was feeling surged back and I was bouncing on my heels."Thank you, I'll leave the keys at the airport for you." I snagged the keys and dar

Lena's POVThe spoon swirling around in my tea was the only thing I could focus on in the noisy little cafe full of people."Earth to Lena!" Emily said, breaking through my reverie and really bringing me back to Earth.I dropped the spoon and looked up at her. Concern was clear on her face, but I couldn't seem to feel anything about it. In all honesty, I hadn't been feeling much since I left Cal in that hotel room."Sorry," I replied, not sure what else she wanted me to say."What is going on with you?" she asked, but it came out gentle instead of harsh."Nothing," I said naturally.Emily sighed and ran her hand through her hair. I kept my eyes focused on her, not wanting to get distracted and zone out again. It had only been a couple of days since they had flown me in on a private plane, but this was the first time I had left the house. In fact, this was the first time I had left my room. Partly because I didn't want to deal with the media again

  • My Politically Arranged Marriage   Chapter 48 : Change of Power

Lena's POVThe sun started streaming through the window, but it still wasn't as warm or as inviting as the man's chest I was lying on. I glared at the rising beams, willing it to go the opposite direction and prolong the moment of bliss.Though after the night before, I wasn't sure there was any bliss I hadn't received. My body tingled at just the memory of it and I had to repress a shiver as the tingles danced through my body. With our naked bodies still pressed to each other, I was worried that any movement could wake him up.And as much as I wanted to talk to Cal, as soon as he woke up, I knew the fairytale would be over and the real questions would have to begin…What did this mean? What were we? Were we staying married? Were we going to stay in the states? The questions all ran through my head, but I wasn't able to answer any of them myself, let alone answer them to Cal…and what would he think?Even after all this time, and with his admission of

  • My Politically Arranged Marriage   Chapter 47 : Heightened Emotions

Lena's POVThey walked us down a couple of halls until they came to a plain door with nothing fancy on it. The door opened easily and they pushed us inside. What in the bloody world was happening?I could feel my anxiety building, but knowing Cal was at least with me was enough to subdue it. For now."What was all that about?" I asked incredulously. He didn't even bother to reply or take in the small, basic room around us before he stepped forward and grabbed the back of my neck, pulling me in until our lips met. Instantly, he parted my mouth with his tongue and pressed even harder. It took everything in me not to moan against him. Cal pulled back and stared into my eyes."God, I love you," he whispered. My rapid breath picked up even more at his words. "Do you really mean that?"He looked down at me. He brought his hand from the back of my neck up to my face and stroked my cheek with his thumb."Yes, I really mean that," he said softly. "I

  • My Politically Arranged Marriage   Chapter 46 : Taken Away

Cal's POVDays. It has been days since I had seen Lena. When I had gotten back to the hotel room, I had found that she was missing. At first I wondered if she changed her mind again and simply just left me, but then I noticed all of her stuff was still there. She wouldn't have left without her phone at the least.I had to admit, while realizing that she was taken by secret service members should have been terrifying, I couldn't help but feel relief at the fact that she hadn't left me. Don't get me wrong though, the worry about where she was and how she was doing were the only things on my mind. Not that I had a right to care. Not with what I was going to have to do to her…My mind whirled again as I stood behind the curtain. The press were on the other side of the curtain, waiting for me to come out and make my appearance. And tell them what was going on.And ruin Lena's life.It had been days, which made no sense to me since they were in such a

  • My Politically Arranged Marriage   Chapter 45 : Sacrifices

Cal's POVThe host led me to the table in one of the private back rooms and I had to take a deep breath as I saw my father sitting there. This was the first time I was seeing him since our earlier meeting where he had scolded Lena and me like misbehaving children. Not to mention that the conversation we had before that consisted of him saying that he could ruin Lena's life. Even remembering that got my blood running cold."Cal, good, you're finally here," my father said, not able to miss a chance at even a small dig at me. "Let's get down to business."He said that as if he ever did it any other way. The man was always quick, blunt, and to the point.I sat down across from him without even bothering to walk over and shake his hand or give him a hug. This wasn't the time for formalities. In fact, it was just him and I."Then speak your piece," I said, relaxing into the chair as much as I could to make it seem as if I was comfortable. My father always had to be the l

  • My Politically Arranged Marriage   Chapter 44 : Restricted Future

Lena's POVI flipped nervously through the news channels, hoping to see anything except my face, but was unsuccessful. Eventually, I gave up and just left it on the last news channel it landed on.This was not good, not good at all.Of course, it had been in my plan to go to the media and reveal the truth about Cal and I, hoping that their uproar would force everyone to allow Cal and I to do what we wanted, but I would have never revealed the private government details.Like being unable to leave the country.Cal and I had just been in the beginning process of making up when his phone had rang. He didn't want to answer it at first, but I insisted that he did. When was I going to learn? The person on the other end of the line had been his father, and he was furious. I tried to hear what he was saying, but all I could make out were yells. Sometimes, I wasn't sure how Cal dealt with that man. However, it was easy to figure out that the reason for his anger was beca

Media/Samantha's POVSamantha's phone buzzed on her makeup desk and she grabbed it quickly before the artist had a chance to look at it. She resisted the urge to open it up right then and there and held it tightly in her lap until the artist finished the final touches for the on-air makeup and walked away.As she walked away, Samantha's patience cracked and she brought my phone to her face, glancing once more around her to make sure nobody was looking. The message box blinked at the top of the screen and she clicked it.Her eyes widened as she read the message in shock. This was nothing she would have guessed. Matt needed to know about this right away. He needed to fact check it."Matt!" • My Politically Arranged Marriage   Chapter 42 : Come to a Consensus

Cal's POVEverything felt right again. It didn't matter how wrong it was, or how much it might hurt me later, kissing Lena just felt right. Especially as her arms hooked around my neck and she kissed me back.Maybe we were volatile, but I could withstand any of the lows if it meant that I got to feel those highs. The euphoria was unlike anything I had ever felt in my life, even including the adrenaline junkie era I had a few years back. This was a whole new type of endorphins. And my body never wanted them to stop.Too bad Lena's body didn't seem to get the message.A sudden noise made Lena pull away from me, my eyes shooting open and searching for her as if I lost the sun. Her lips were off of mine, but she kept her arms around me and she was close enough that I could still feel the warmth of her breath."What just happened?" she practically whispered, her bright eyes burning into me.Man, I had missed those beautiful eyes.Damn. One kiss and I was alread
