While opening presents on Christmas morning, I watch as my mother walks over to the tree and picks up a large package with a big shiny purple bow on it.  She turns around with a mischievous smile on her face before looking me in the eye and stating, “This one is for you.  I saved the best for last.”

Feeling extremely excited, I thrust my hands out to reach for it.  When she places it in my palms, I notice that it is much heavier than I expected for such a small package.  With a funny look on her face, she steps back and sits on the couch to the right of me and stares at me till I unwrap it, saying, “Hurry, I want to see if you really like it.”

Hesitating, I watch her eyes bug out when I decide to milk it for all it is worth, till she screams at me in excitement, “Hurry.”

Placing the package between my legs for leverage, I find the seam of the tape and slowly pull it bit by bit until the paper starts to peel

After washing my hair and rinsing off, I step out and grab my towel. Hearing someone speak, I ask, “Hello. Mom is that you?” Frowning when no one answers, I hurry to dry off when I feel a brisk chill in the air and the hairs on my arms stand on end. Turning around, I see a chilling image in the mirror. It is me, but not really. There is something off just a little and I can’t put my finger on it till I blink, and then it goes back to normal. The image was of the doll Marybelle. Her eyes were so dead and empty that I could tell it’s what I saw and when I realize this, the first thing I want to do is throw that doll in the fire and burn it to ashes. After a few minutes, I decide that it was just a figment of my imagination and that because it looks so real it just freaks me out a little, that’s all. Shaking my head to get her mental image out of my head, I hurry to pull my pants on and button up my shirt before re

  • My Nightmares   Chapter 22: The World Is Ending

Waking up in the morning, nothing seemed strange at all. I sat down in front of the television and watched the news. Then I made my children sausage, eggs, and toast before they had to leave for school. Hearing the school bus honk outside, I glanced over at the clock on the kitchen wall and realized that they were late for the bus. That was just the first thing that went wrong today but not the last, I promise. After the kids barely made it on to the bus, with no time to spare, I sat down with a cup of coffee and realized that in the bottom of the cup is a dead fly. Once I took a shower, I went about my daily business of cleaning the house, making the beds, and doing the laundry. Not at any time during this daily ritual, did I ever once think that things would go so horribly wrong before I would close my eyes and go to sleep at the end of the night. But now, it is 4 p.m. and for some unknown reason, the world has gone crazy.

"Melody" A haunting voice says so softly it's barely a whisper and then I hear a scraping sound at the foot of my bed.I open my eyes and try to see in the pitch black. Nothing. Pulling up my covers around my shoulders, I wait for my eyes to adjust to the darkness that surrounds me like a cocoon. Realizing for some reason my door has closed all the way and that’s why I couldn’t see a single thing, I start to get scared and begin to tremble."Melody" I hear it again and it is louder this time. The worst part is, it sounds like whoever is saying it, is almost next to me.Laying there, I don't make a single noise. How did my door get closed? Ever since I was two, I have been scared of the dark. Knowing that, my mom put a brick in front of it one day to make sure this wouldn’t happen. Now that I’m twelve, you would think I would be old enough to shut my door, but I still keep it ther

“Melody, it’s dinner time. You need to come in.” She yells out the kitchen door and scares me nearly to death. “If you want Sydney to eat with us, I can call her mom.” She says when I'm almost to the door.“No. Her mom isn’t home, just her brother and he won’t let her. He’s mean.”“Oh. Well then let’s get you cleaned up, so you can eat.”After washing up, I sit down at the table and we say grace. “When is dad coming home?” I look at mom and she glances down at her watch.“Dad said he will be home late tonight. So, it’s just you and me, kiddo.”We eat and when I’m finished, I excuse myself from the table. She looks up from her food and says while smiling, “You need to clean up your room, your bed is a mess.”I had forgot about that. “O.

"Are you O.K.?" My roommate Shanna asks looking concerned after she knocks on my door and sees me sitting in my dorm room alone, crying on Halloween. She is a big girl, about 6 foot and stocky with dyed pitch black hair and wearing heavy black liner. She looks like the type of person you don't want to meet in a dark alley. In reality, she is actually very insecure and unsure of herself. Not at all what you would think.Glancing up at her, I fake a smile. “Yeah, just in one of those moods. You know how I get.” I say mournfully and the frown that follows, tells all.“I completely understand. So, what happened today with idiot?” She replies as she picks up a piece of trash off of the floor and throws it away.Shaking my head, I say, “He tried to apologize, but I blew him off. I hate it when he gets that way.”Standing up, I turn the depressing music off and

Looking at me like I was absolutely crazy, he lets me come in and sit down. “Are you O.K.?”“No, there is something in my room and I think it's a ghost. The skeleton on my door just moved it’s arm up after I asked for my brother to do something to let me know if he was there. I could understand if it fell down, but no it just freaking moved up.”“Well, let’s go see. I’m sure there is a reasonable explanation for it.” He stands up and grabs something before returning to the room.I glance at him and I could tell right away that he wasn’t taking me seriously. “You know what? Just never mind, you’re right.” I say as I try to just blow it off as me acting nutty because of Halloween.“No, really. Let’s go.” He says as he walks to the door and motions for me to follow him.I stand up and start walking

"Scrrratch. Scrrrratch" Scanning the room, I try to decipher where the scratching noise is coming from, but I can't tell till I get off of the bed and walk around. I discover the closer I get to the closet, the louder it gets. Opening the door, I scan the empty space and then hear it again. I'm satisfied for the moment that nothing is going to burst through the wall, when I take a few seconds further to inspect it and ultimately decide that it's safe. Just to make sure, I put my ear to the wall and jump back startled when it sounds like something impacts with the other side and I feel the wall shake. Right at that very moment my mom walks in, “Where are you?” I hear her rummaging in my drawers and it makes me start to get aggravated.

Should I go with my parents? Or just deal with it and stay home like any other normal teenager. Thinking about it, I realize that it isn't really all that bad. After all, I am 13 and it isn't a big deal. I look down and see Bubba pushing my door open slowly with his big head. He bounces over to me and licks my foot. The whole time I keep picturing one of those cartoon dogs bouncing along, going "Boingy, boingy, boingy." When he is done, he curls up on my bed and falls asleep. Looking at him sleeping sweetly, I just know that having him around won't be much good. If someone decides to break into the house, he would just lick them and demand attention. Working up the courage to do this, I go in and tell my mom, “Becky just called and she can't c

  • My Nightmares   Chapter 19: The Ghost In My Living Room

For about a year and a half now, I have been sleeping in my living room in my comfy black faux suede reclining chair in front of the fireplace. My kids always thought it was odd that I had a bedroom upstairs that seemed perfectly fine, but I never used it once my ex-husband was gone. Matter fact, I flat out refused to go in there after dark because it creeped me out to no end. So, when I sit here in the dark with only a small lamp in the dining room for light to see where the bathroom is, I begin to wonder how I am not scared when I see the shadows move from behind me. I guess it is because whatever is in my bedroom upstairs, feels threatening. What is down here however, feels like it is part of me for some reason. I know that doesn’t make sense, but I feel that perhaps the shadows that move around me once belonged to either a little boy who died in a barn fire in the very early 1900’s or an older woman who died here just after that.&nbs

  • My Nightmares   Chapter 18: Was That A Zombie?

I’m talking to my mom on the phone and listening to a song on the radio while I sit in my room staring out the window at the storm. It’s an especially strong one I might add, because as I sit there, I notice that a tree gets ripped right out of the ground and is lopped on an electric wire a couple feet away from it. As I watch this happen, an alert comes over the radio and then the phone blinks out. “Dang it.” I say as I glance down at my phone and wonder what just happened. Hearing the alert system on the radio, I climb off my bed and walk over to turn it up before I hear that there is a serious threat. Something about a contagion in the air and that everyone should stay indoors, or they might breathe it in. See, I am not stupid. Everyone knows that if it is in the air, even staying indoors won’t help with the situation. So, I start to laugh a little before realizing that they are dead serious. Hearing the aler

  • My Nightmares   Chapter 17: Falling

Every night for years, I had a dream where I was falling. I would turn round and round as I fell farther down the hole. It was dark and menacing, but before I fell, something would chase me that sounded a lot like a little girl. The thing is the way she sounded, scared me to no end. I remember one night. I had just closed my eyes and then I heard it, a gentle scraping noise coming from the end of the bed. Convincing myself that it was just something in my head, I keep my eyes closed and count to 100. When I am done, I hear it again. As I open my eyes, I feel the sheets begin to slowly lower as if someone was pulling them from the foot of the bed. When I see the shadowy dark figure emerge, I scream out into the night. Fearing no one will help me, I try to make my escape and end up flat on my face before realizing that my feet were still caught up in the sheets. Struggling to get back up again, I

  • My Nightmares   Chapter 16: Howling At The Moon

Hearing something strange in my backyard, I glance out the window and hear someone or should I say something howling. “Howl” “Howwwwlll” I stop before turning around and walking over to the wall so I can flip on the light switch to my room. Something is definitely odd, because the minute my finger flips the switch, the howling stops. As I stand completely still, I feel a presence in the room with me. Just before I spin on my heels and turn to see what is behind me, I am hit in the back of the head by something hard as it makes a thud that echoes throughout my skull. When I come to, the pain in my head explodes like a bomb went off and I can hear nothing of what is going on in the room around me. Opening my eyes, I see two shapes moving about and on closer inspection I notice that they are quite large and slow moving. One is a woman and looks hairier than most Americans, so I can only assume that they are either of Europea

  • My Nightmares   Chapter 15: This Really Sucks Part 2

As I start to feel weak and my vision fades to black, the last thing I remember of that moment is his voice, “It will only get better.” Then I black out for a while before awaking to a noise on the outside of the window.A soft tapping noise, like a twig hitting the windowpane in the breeze, or something like that. Opening my eyes, a sharp pain slices through my head like a knife and I feel like ten hangovers hit me at once in vengeance. My stomach is tossing and turning and before I know it, I am forced to open my eyes again and rush to the bathroom to throw up everything I have had for the last day and a half. I only know this, because I had pizza two days ago and I am fairly sure that I saw a piece of pepperoni undigested in the toilet.Feeling that overwhelming need to go to the bathroom, I find that I can’t even pee and all that comes out is some overly smelly gas that smells like something dead. Sitting there for a

  • My Nightmares   Chapter 14: This Really Sucks

Closing my eyes, I take a deep breath and then hold it for ten seconds. When I take another, I find that something feels different. I can sense a presence. Not wanting to really find out what is in the room with me, I pull the covers even higher over my head and I don’t open my eyes for nothing. Eventually, I drift off to sleep after I feel that the coast is clear, and my fears have subsided. However, I was not expecting to feel a very cold hand on my arm in the middle of the night, but when I do I start to shake severely. I don’t live with a single soul and my parents had died years ago so it wasn’t them. Not to mention, no one else had keys to my small apartment in the city where break ins are all too common. Is this a burglar checking to see if I am really asleep or a serial killer who wants to get his jollies off hearing me scream? Honestly, I don’t know, and I don’t care just as long as they leave me alone, s
