The heart transplant was complex, being that it was the second time Sapphire was having a heart transplant surgery. The open heart surgery took longer with her body, receiving oxygen-rich blood, which is why she was connected to a heart-lung bypass machine.After that, the cardiovascular surgeon made an incision, to operate on her heart. The incision was made such that her chest bone was separated and her rib cage was opened. The surgeon then removed the artificial heart, and replaced it with the donor's heart.
