I thought I saw a wolf-shaped shade just around the corner. I flinched and ran in the opposite direction. I couldn't believe that the ones who were looking for me got here so fast. It couldn't have been merely the smell of my blood that betrayed my location. They must have known about it for some time.
“Could it be that they were sniffing around the town earlier without me knowing?!” I wondered in panic.
I had become careless. I had never made such a stupid mistake. I had been fooling them for years, and yet, I got myself in a situation when I was unprepared.
“I need to get home fast. I need to take my survival bag, then get to the train station. After that, I need to take the money from the deposit box at the station and get the hell out of here,” I planned in my mind while running.
Suddenly, I heard a deep growling sound coming from the alley right in front of me. I stopped. I saw three wolf-shaped shades ominously appearing on the wall of the building. I turned around and saw two other wolf shades in the alley behind me. I was surrounded. I sighed and tossed my purse onto the ground. Then I stood in a fighting position and clenched my fists.
“Five on one?! That is not very gentlemanly of you!” I called out.
The wolf-shape shades started to turn into human silhouettes…
“We don't want to hurt you, princess. Not unless you give us a reason,” the voice coming from the alley in front of me snarled.
Three men walked out right in front of me. They were all tall and their bodies were filled with muscles. I gulped and clenched my fists even harder, standing steady on my feet.
“Just give up. You won't fight us all,” I heard from the man who just came from the back alley.
They were coming closer, sneering, and looking me up and down with disdain. I took a deep breath.
“Calm down, Lilith. You have to calm down. Aim for the vital spots. You can do it. You can fight them and run away,” I talked to myself.
They stood in a circle around me. I kept glancing at all of them, turning around and waiting for the first one to attack.
“Look, princess. We don't have to entertain you. Surrender and go quietly.” The one that resembled the strongest one reached out his hand my way, painting a sneering smile.
I used that opportunity to grab his arm and throw him to the ground using his own strength against him. He moaned painfully.
“How dare you lowly human!” another one roared and came right at me.
Fortunately, his fist wasn't fast enough to hit me. I dodged the punch. Then I hit his chin with the base of my palm and aimed for his eyes. He bellowed in fury. There were two down and three more to go.
The next one attacked me from behind. I used my hands and elbows to release myself from his grip, then turned around and hit his solar plexus. I knew that if I were to survive, I had to move even faster. As soon as he bent down, I passed him by and started running away. Two others started chasing me. I used all of my strength to speed up. I clenched my teeth, telling myself that I had to escape from them.
I briefly turned my head around to check my distance from them. There was a slight chance that they wouldn't catch up quickly. I smirked and sped up even more. I knew I had to get around the corner. There was an old, abandoned building there. It was a perfect place to hide. I ran straight, clenching my fists. I was getting closer. Only a few more steps and I would reach the building.
Suddenly, a tall, red-haired man appeared right in front of me. He smiled wickedly while spreading his arms wide and blocking my way. I recognized him right away.
“No! Only not him!” I screamed inside my mind.
I jumped to the side, frantically trying to find some other route to escape, but he was much faster than those other men chasing me.
“Where do you think you are going, princess?!” he hissed grabbing me by the collar.
His grip was so strong it almost made me choke. He pulled me back and tossed me to the ground. I jumped up on my feet. My only chance was to attack him and run. He was too tall for me to aim at his face, and my kicks might not have been strong and fast enough to damage him. I clenched my teeth, hit his stomach, and quickly jumped back. He only chuckled, while I felt as if I had broken my hand. I turned around, hoping for a chance to run away from him, but the other men were already there. I was surrounded.
“Give up, princess. If you choose to resist, I will have to break a few bones in your pretty body,” the red-haired chuckled coldly.
I panted heavily. No matter how hard I trained my body over the twenty years of my life, I was still not even nearly a match for them. My human body was at its limit, but surrendering wasn't an option.
“Not a chance, Derek. If you want me, you will have to kill me!” I roared, standing again in a fighting position.
“Well… don't say I didn't warn you,” he smirked, then nodded his head telling the men behind me to attack.
Two of them grabbed my arms, trying to restrain me. I stomped on one's foot and kicked the other's legs out. I thought that it was my chance. I had to use it and escape at any cost. I barged straight ahead, but then Derek blocked my way. He swiftly grabbed my neck and lifted me up. I couldn't breathe. I struggled, trying to release myself from his hand that clenched my throat. I grabbed it with both of my hands, but I couldn't even lift one finger of his palm. I tried using my legs to kick him, but the lack of oxygen in my lungs quickly cut all of my strength. He laughed, waiting for me to stop resisting. Tears started to flow from my eyes. I didn't want to give up. I couldn't give up. I couldn't win either…
I gazed straight into Derek's eyes. I wanted to let him know how much I despised him before I couldn't move anymore, feeling how life was slowly floating out of my body. He finally released his grip, tossing me down to the ground. I started coughing and desperately trying to fill my lungs again. He crouched right beside me.
“If you haven't been this valuable, I would have killed you a long time ago,” he whispered to my ear.
I kept lying on the ground struggling to catch my breath. I couldn't force myself to stand up, even though I fiercely tried. Derek took out a syringe from his pocket and took off the needle cover with his teeth.
“I won't risk your rebellious moves, princess. You are going to get some nice sleep while we're on our way,” he snickered, injecting my neck.
I tried to pull out the needle, but it was too late. The drug started circulating in my veins. It hurt. I felt as if my whole skin had started to burn. I lifted my head.
“You… son of a b*tch…” I hissed faintly, covering the injected spot.
“Such vulgar language, your highness?” Derek mocked me, “I will make sure to crash your arrogance very soon.”
Instantly my legs became weak. I could barely move a muscle. Even so, I still struggled to lift my upper body with my arms, as if it could allow me to improve my desperate situation. I just needed to do something…
Those vicious men came to grab me by my arms and started to drag me towards a back alley. The focus of my sight was decreasing. I felt as if my world had become darker. My head was spinning.
“Let me go… Release me… Help… Somebody, help…” I muttered, ineptly trying to strengthen up my voice.
Suddenly, I noticed a black shadow moving fast. It passed by the men who were dragging me and disappeared at the corner of an old building.
“Stupid mutts,” an ominous voice laughed.
I lifted my eyes to look ahead and saw the shape of a man in a long black coat. The high collar of his coat was standing, covering most of his face.
“Who the hell are you?!” Derek fumed.
“You don't need to know that,” the man chuckled.
“Get out of here if you know what's good for you!” one of Derek's men snarled.
“Can't do that.” The man in the coat walked closer, smirking.
Derek's man rushed towards the man in the coat. He jumped up with a kick, but the coat man grabbed his leg with one hand and broke it.
“You are dead!” Derek bellowed in fury.
The man in the coat walked closer into the light. Only then, I was able to notice his shining, silver hair. It was the man I met at the café! I gasped.
“You cannot kill me,” he sighed nonchalantly, then put on a malicious grin on his face, “I am already dead…”
I was slowly losing consciousness. I could no longer recognize all the sounds and blurry images. I could only see the rage in Derek's men while ineptly attacking the silver-haired. They ignored me and left me lying on the ground while they all charged at the stranger. I could hear their bones breaking. I could hear their screams and painful howling. There wasn't even an ounce of sympathy in me towards them, but at the same time, I was far from being safe. "Who is this person? He is much stronger than all those wolves… Is he a shapeshifter like them? Why did he say that he is dead? Is he some kind of freaking zombie or something?! Why is he attacking them?! Is he going to kill them?! And… if he does… is he going to kill me too?!" I wondered in panic. The drug flowing in my blood paralyzed me. My awareness was fading. I was terrified and helpless. I didn't want to come back with Derek and his men, but the more I didn't want to die in the hands of some madman. Suddenly,
I spent the next few years wandering around many places. I hadn't encountered any wolves that were chasing me, but I had never stayed in one spot longer than three months either. Of course, it was harder to earn any money that way. That was why I decided to open an online business that I could run without revealing my true name. What I was selling were investment advices. I have always been good at predicting how the market would respond to certain events. Even my teachers used to call me a genius in that field. Actually, business and the stock market weren't my only areas of expertise. I could easily become the best in any subject. The problem was, my so-called "family" would never allow me to get a decent university diploma… or any university diploma at that. I was only allowed to graduate from St. Anna's College, after graduating from St. Anna's High School, after growing up in St. Anna's orphanage… Yes, the situation between me and my "family" was always a little peculia
I nervously squeezed the stranger's phone while listening to the waiting signal. Finally, someone took the call. "Master?! Where are you?! Everyone's looking for your highness!" The man's voice feverishly shouted over the phone. "Um… h-hello?" I muttered hesitantly. "Who is this?" The person on the other side of the phone changed his tone, "How did you get Master's phone?" he asked harshly. "Am I talking to… Leo?" I waited for the reply, but the silence made me realize it was a dumb question, "Your… friend, master or… whatever, had a car accident. I found him. He told me not to call an ambulance, and call you instead…" I explained nervously. Leo became quiet for some time. I even checked if he didn't hang up the phone. "H-hello?" I mumbled, impatient for any kind of response. "I tracked the phone. Wait there. We will be there in 20 minutes tops," he stated coldly and ended the call. I wanted to say something, but I mere
After the rescue team had disappeared, leaving me in the dangerous middle of nowhere, I had to struggle to find my way back home myself. For the first time, I found it fortunate that life had never been easy on me, and I had survived much more difficult situations than this before. Certainly, if I were some fragile princess, I would sit on the ground and cry my eyes out while trembling in fear. Now my current situation made me more furious than desperate. I even thought that it would be kind of fortunate if I met some perverts or aggressive drunkards on my way back since I could take my anger off on them. Nevertheless, I still hoped to meet someone on the road who would be kind enough to give me a ride to a more civilized place, but judging on my luck that day, chances for that to happen were close to none. The road was dark and completely empty. I used my phone as a flashlight while walking back from where I ran, cursing my sense of empathy that was constantly getting me in
My new apartment was in a district called Sky Valley. It was a place filled with successful artists, well-paid freelancers, and contractual management specialists. There were a lot of young, talented individuals. Each of the people who lived there was unique, but they all had one thing in common: they were all devoted to their work, and they all minded their own businesses... Well, the majority of them at least. The day I moved in, someone knocked on my door. I was busy unpacking and initially ignored the knocking sound, hoping that whoever it was would give up and go away. Unfortunately, a minute later I heard the doorbell. I figured that it was the same person, and if he or she was still there, then perhaps there was a good reason for it. I opened the door and saw a brightly smiling, short woman with curly brown hair. "Hi! I'm Carla. Can I use your balcony?" she asked, nervously grinning. "Can you use my… what?" I glanced at her, feeling confused.
Carla had outstanding cooking skills and an amazing imagination when it came to mixing flavors. She couldn't afford to rent a place for a restaurant, so she chose to start a catering company instead. She had rented premises in the building right next to our apartments and created a professional kitchen there. She intended to provide her cuisine at the most expansive events in the city. That could allow her to earn the money she needed to open her dream restaurant in New Argent City… in a few years. I supported that dream of hers with all my heart. Spending time with Carla was refreshing. She was always on the run. She constantly developed new dishes while I had become her lab mouse that had to taste whatever she came up with. She was a perfect distraction from my monotonic work, and a natural excuse to take a break. With her, I could pretend that I was living a normal life. Sometimes I even convincedmyself that I could stay in New Argent City forever… I had jus
The Diamond Crown Casino was in a 45-story building. The gambling games were placed on two floors, but they were merely a part of the entertainment the Diamond Crown Casino was providing. There was an enormous theatrical part of the building with five stages prepared to accommodate over ten thousand people in the audience seats. The rest of the building was taken by banquet halls, conference rooms, swimming pools, wellness and beauty salons, and, of course, the grand, luxurious hotel. Knowing that it was easy to imagine how much money was running through this place every day. The sum surely had a number of zeros that could make a head spin. Carla met me right outside the building. The casino's crew for the event took all of the dishes out of Carla's truck. She prepared every dish carefully in advance, putting it all on separate, ready-to-serve plates. All of her appetizers, finger sandwiches, and sweets simply needed to be unwrapped and taken by the waitresses. After
We all put down our trays, mostly still filled with food, on the big metal table standing in the kitchen area, and wondered if our work was over. Suddenly, we became surrounded by the casino workers. "Is the event now over? Do you want us to do anything else?" Carla asked someone who looked like the staff's manager. I could see that she was trying to stay composed, but at the same time, she kept clenching her fists just to prevent them from shaking. I stood right beside her, trying to help her keep calm, but I was trembling inside as well. The manager looked Carla up and down and smirked. "You all have done an amazing job. Now, we need you to go through the door on the other side of the room," he said casually. "And what is it behind that door?" Carla inquired nervously. "Your only way out," he stated, grinning. That smile of his was soaked in pretended courtesy. His eyes were cunning and cold, and those other casino employees
Fucking Adragna! I could barely stand sitting in front of the Marquess or his sons, knowing that they were the ones who planned the attack on my parents. I should have squeezed my fingers around their necks and watched smug smiles disappear from their faces in agony, and yet, I was forced to keep calm, pretending I didn't know because I had no way to prove it. Those fuckers were good at killing witnesses. I hated them just as much as I hated those mongrels from the Southern Woods Pack. I was the Duke and a future king. I had the strength to crush those bastards to dust, but I had to sit there doing nothing. Why? Because King Mael said so! This old vampire thought that it would be refreshing if our annual meeting were held in his mansion in the Blue Valley, completely ignoring the fact that it was in the middle of fucking nowhere. I couldn't stay there a minute longer. I didn't care if King Mael would be pissed. I wouldn't lose his favor anyway. I was the strongest of all the
"My friend will finally wear the crown!" Martha's enthusiasm nearly made my eardrums explode. Truthfully, I couldn't care less about the crown. It was the wedding dress that was freaking me out. Who would have thought that the vows "till death do us part" would actually mean being together for at least a few centuries? I didn't doubt Sariel's love or mine for him, but still… I still hadn't sorted out the whole "vampire issue". After a month of living as a super-duper-commoner, I knew that I didn't need human blood; drinking Sariel's blood was enough for me. I was ecstatic to find out that he didn't need to drink any other blood than mine either. Will told us that it was a "mates' thing", and that this dependence would bind us forever as well as make us stronger. Yet, it didn't solve all the issues that made me anxious. Commoners lived forever, literally, and nobles had extended but limited lifespans. Would I be forced to live without Sariel? The thought of that formed a knot
"Good morning, my Queen."I would never get enough of hearing it. Sariel made it sound amazingly enticing. His smiling eyes were eating every piece of me. The intensity of his gaze made me flush. We were both naked, although I couldn't recall the moment I lost my silk nightgown. Sariel's arms were wrapping me tightly, and our legs were tangled. The air around us was saturated with arousal, so electrifying that the mere spark could cause an explosion. As my eyes roamed down from Sariel's eyes to his lips, I saw a smug grin. One breath later, his hands cupped my buttocks, lifting me slightly so I could feel his erection against my sex. I gasped."I see you're all healed," I chuckled nervously."Almost…" he smirked. "Now I need a different kind of therapy."His lips blocked mine before I could say anything else. He pinned my hands down on both sides of my head and deepened the kiss with passionate, lush licks. As I surrendered to his caresses, his han
According to the legendWill found, the mate's blood had the greatest effect on the full moon. Well… no surprise there. Conveniently for us, the full moon was tomorrow. The problem was that the whole ritual was quite risky since it required unplugging Sariel from any monitoring equipment in order to grant us an intimate environment. The healing ritual should have been performed between the two mates alone, without any disturbances. I could actually agree with that last one. The moment when we exchanged blood last time, well... I wouldn't want anyone to be around when it happened. Still, I was restless. What if we unplugged Sariel because we believed the legend, and he would die because of this choice?I asked Will if I could read everything he found about that legend, and he agreed to bring me all the centuries-old books that had mentioned something like "mates" among vampires. The moment I began to read it, my heart started to pound. The words describing the bond
After coming back to the Palace, I was dragged away from Sariel. The King was unconscious, and the reign of the kingdom had to be settled immediately. I was led to the study, where I met Gabriel, a group of lawyers, and Leo. I had no idea what my role was in all of this, and I didn't care. I would rather sit by Sariel's bed until he woke up, yet Leo firmly held my hand, convincing me to stay. He told me that there was a certain protocol I, as the queen-to-be, should follow. Reluctantly, I gave up and decided to listen. One of the lawyers stepped forward. He held a sealed envelope. He showed everyone the unbroken seal, and then he opened the content. It was an emergency protocol. It was only supposed to be open if something happened to the King. Acknowledging the reason we were gathered in that room made my head spin. I was suffocating. I stumbled, taking a step back. It was too much. Sariel wasn't dead! I couldn't bear to do anything as if he had already died!"It's on
When I saw Jarred standing over Sariel, who was lying on the ground, my heart stopped beating. My King was bleeding heavily from multiple cuts on his chest, his shoulders, his arms… When I ran into the arena and stopped in the middle, everyone's eyes shifted to me. I struggled to take a breath as the tears flooded my cheeks. Jarred growled and gestured at two standing-by guards so they could take me out of there. Jarred should have known better than to send two rogue werewolves against me. As I roared warningly and pulled out my claws, the wolves stepped back, recognizing my strength.I knew that I couldn't interfere in Sariel's fight. I was no match for Jarred, nor did I want to take away Sariel's pride. The only thing I could do was to bring back his will and courage. I couldn't lose him when we had just gotten each other back. As he turned his head towards me, I met his eyes. Their fire was slowly dying. The view devastated me, but I was not allowed to give up.
I ran towards the screen, processing the situation. The arena was surrounded by a rising ring of metal constructions with wooden boards lying on them, creating a provisional place to stand or walk. A few seconds later, Sariel and Jarred were joined by the audience. They stood on each floor of the construction. They were Jarred's men: rogue wolves and commoner vampires, hiding their flesh under the thick hoods and robes. The outcasts. They were all chanting Jarred's name and spitting underneath Sariel's feet. I could hear their spiteful voices coming through the speakers. Hearing their hatred tore my heart apart, but Sariel seemed unmoved. My King stood proudly, glaring at his enemy while he enticed the crowd, fueling their furious shouts. "Where's Lilith?" Sariel clenched his fist, seeking my presence in the audience. Jarred raised his hand, silencing the crowd, before speaking, "My Sister is safe. She is resting in her room." He curved his lips into a smile, but his
I turned towards the door and observed the overly tall shape of a man emerging from the shadows of the corridor. As he passed the threshold of my cell, I stepped back, soaking my bare feet in the puddle of Ian's blood. My instincts forced me to keep the right distance despite the circumstances. His dangerous aura filled every corner of the room, making every breath more and more uncomfortable.A second later, I saw a man with wavy, naturally ruffled black hair. The irises of his eyes were green with light shades of gold, captivatingly glowing in his olive complexion. He had strongly underlined cheekbones and a sharp jawline, giving him a highly intimidating look. As he entered, his eyes were locked on me. He never spared a glance at Ian's bloodied corpse. He stepped forward, and I instantly stepped back. Once I did, his full faint-pink lips formed a wicked smirk. He walked my way until my steps back brought me against the wall.He easily towered over me, shutting me in
"Lilith." Someone cautiously called my name, pulling me back to awareness.Waking up was hard. It instantly brought me pain before I could even open my eyes. My mouth twisted in a silent scream as I felt my body burning from the inside. My senses were dull, and I could barely feel anything except the pain."Silver is still in your blood. Try not to move; it will be less painful that way," the low voice advised. As more of my consciousness came back, I found myself lying on the bed. I opened my eyes and saw my hands in shackles, restrained by chains on both sides of the bed. There was also a cold metallic collar on my neck. The advice I heard was accurate: the pain lessened as soon as I stooped to move, yet I needed to find out more to evaluate my situation. I slowly turned my head to the source of the voice and saw Ian standing beside my bed.I instantly frowned. "Traitor," I mumbled. He smiled wryly. "I merely chose to be someone better than a dri
