Chapter 4

I saw myself lying on the operating table, tears streaming down my cheeks. Dad didn’t even look back as he took Marcus out of the operating room and into recovery.

I was left there, alone. It wasn’t until a nurse found my lifeless body, her face pale with shock, that I was taken to the morgue.

In the recovery room, Dad stood by Marcus, who was still pale. A doctor walked in, someone I knew well. He was Dad’s former colleague, Uncle Gibson.

“Henry, your daughter is gone.”

Dad kept his eyes on Marcus, his expression unchanged.

“The surgery was successful. Marcus is going to be fine.”

Hearing this, I felt my heart tighten with pain. It wasn’t that Dad had lied to me that hurt the most. It was that even in death, he wouldn’t spare me a single glance.

“Henry!” Uncle Gibson shouted, grabbing Dad by the collar.

“Did you hear me? Your daughter is gone! She was just a child! Do you understand? A child! You knew her condition couldn’t handle surgery, so why did you go through with it? A
