Chapter 10

Author: July Koi
Rosette seemed to have lost it. She clenched the knife in her hand and started walking towards me with a sinister smile.

“I hate you! I finally got you two to get a divorce. Why must you show up now? I was already talking to Leo about the wedding. I was so close to climbing into the upper class of society. Why must you keep haunting me like a ghost?”

I had already planned for the worst and was unfazed by the knife. “You’re the one who killed my daughter and now you’re playing the victim. A vicious woman like you will never find happiness.

“You wouldn’t even spare a child that is barely an adult yet. Have you no conscience at all? You are destined to fail, destined to be looked down on by everyone! You are the scum of society and belong in the underbelly. You should have never seen the light of day!”

I gestured at the phone I had placed right next to the vase by the entrance. “The moment I came in here, I had already started a live broadcast. The entire world has seen what you truly

After my husband, Leo Barton, sent me back to my hometown for a month, he used this window to remove my daughter’s kidney to save his childhood sweetheart, Rosette Smith. While his childhood sweetheart was rescued, my daughter caught a severe case of acute kidney failure due to an infection. When I rushed to the hospital to see my daughter, she strained a smile and whimpered, “Mom… I saved Aunt Rosette. Does that mean… does that mean that Dad won’t leave us?”Her pupils had become dilated and her arms drooped off the side of the bed. She died with her eyes open.I sat stunned in silence by the bed, feeling as if someone had gouged out my heart. I started frantically calling Leo, and as soon as the call was connected, I heard him saying, “Rosette, I'm here. I won’t leave you! Your body just has a mild reaction to the new kidney. You’ll be okay after you get some rest back home.”Before I could even get a word out, he roared into the phone to shut me up, “Why are you being so dram

I refused to drop the matter and vowed to seek justice for my daughter. I desperately lurched forward to scratch his face.Around this point, the door of the ward slowly opened and Rosette stepped out. Her face was pale like a ghost.Leo immediately pulled over from me and rushed over to put his arms around Rosette. It hurt him just to see her in such a state. He claimed that Rosette was his saint and that he was sick and tired of the drama of the world. According to him, she was the one who brought a glimmer of light into his dull and gray world. He stated that he would not divorce me out of respect for my daughter, but I should not expect any more affection from him either. Rosette was the only one who deserved his love and attention. He mollycoddled Rosette. “Why did you get up? I told you I would take care of everything for you. Are you feeling alright?”Rosette regarded me with a silent look, then she started to plead as if she was a victim, “Clarice, it was all my fault. If

The next morning, I dragged my lethargic body back home with the cremated ashes of my daughter in my hands.I sat on the couch and waited until the afternoon for Leo to come home. When I was sixteen years old, I entered society with Leo, and we both tried to make something of ourselves. When we turned twenty-one, we started a small business, and then we got married and had children. In the blink of an eye, my daughter had grown into an adult as well.Twenty-three years of companionship turned out to be all for nothing.Leo seemed taken aback when he saw me. “All I did was forget to tell you about Dianne wanting to donate her kidney to Rosette. Did you have to let yourself go and sink into such a pathetic state?”I was disheveled and all the spark had left my eyes, appearing more like the dead than the living.Leo was disgruntled. He kicked off his shoes and went to the kitchen to pour himself a glass of water. The kettle was empty. This set him off again. “Look at you! You’ve j

Leo's mouth jerked upon hearing this. His eyes became so bloodshot it looked like they would bleed.“Are you trying to get on my nerves by pulling a prank like this? Is one slap not good enough for you? I can give you a couple more slaps if you want! Listen up, I’ll give you a divorce if that’s what you want! Even if Dianne came begging this time, I am still going to divorce you no matter what!”I couldn't stand it anymore and shouted back at him, “Sure! I’d love to get divorced! And for the record, Dianne won’t have to waste her energy pleading with you anymore! Thanks to your complete neglect, she died of kidney failure! If you won’t believe me, go ahead and ask at the hospital. They will tell you that everything I just said is true!”Leo narrowed the look in his eyes and fixed a prolonged look on me.After a few seconds, he reached for his phone with trembling hands. Before he could even make the call, Rosette ended up calling him. He immediately picked up as if that was the ex

It was Leo who had shouted. He showed up out of nowhere and knocked over the rows of flower baskets.Rosette trailed behind him. She came in on an electric wheelchair and held a hand over her chest as if she was in pain. Her complexion was very pale like she was on the verge of death. She had several bodyguards surrounding her as well.I charged toward Leo to stop him.“Stop! Don't ruin these flowers. They were Dianne’s favorite. Do you know how much work we put into growing these flowers? I won’t let you ruin them!”Leo ignored my pleas and shoved me to the ground, making me nearly drop the urn as I fell.Leo looked around the scene and shouted angrily, “Dianne, get out here right now!”I stared at him in disbelief. I foolishly thought he finally felt some resemblance of guilt about his daughter passing away and came to pay his respects. “What is your problem? Weren’t you going to spend time with this bitch and miss our daughter's birthday anyway? Why can’t you let us proceed wi

Rosette tried her best to keep her glee from boiling over and interjected, “Clarice, I know you are against Dianne donating her kidney to me. I admit it was wrong for us to keep it a secret from you. Still, how could you be so vicious and continue wishing for her death?“I may be an outsider, but I still have the heart to forgive her for what she did. How could you curse her like this? Do you call yourself her mother?”“Shut up, you witch! Don’t you dare even speak my daughter’s name again! You were the one who should have died instead!”The hatred had overwhelmed me to the point of bursting through my chest. I got up and charged madly at her. I was going to tear her apart with the sheer force of my hands! Before I could even grab her, Leo yanked me back by my hair. “How dare you try to hurt her?!”Terrified, Rosette frantically reversed the electric wheelchair from me while whimpering pathetically, “Leo, I was just trying to talk some sense into her. I didn’t think she would be s

I glared at him with reddened eyes. I thought about how much I had loved him and contrasted that with how much I hated him at that moment.I don’t know how long I attacked him, but when I was done, his eyes were bloodshot and his cheeks were swollen. There were more than dozens of scratch marks across his face.I was worn out from hitting him and had lost my voice by this point. I collapsed in front of what remained of Dianne’s ashes. Finally, I gathered whatever ashes I could manage and poured them back into the urn.Leo knelt beside me and put out his trembling hands as if to offer help. Before he could even graze against the ashes, I jabbed a kick at him. “Get out of here! Don’t touch my daughter!”Leo kept his head down the entire time, and his voice was choked up. “Clarice, I'm so sorry. I-I thought the nurse would take care of her. How could this have happened? The doctor told me that the operation was successful…”I cried out with a voice filled with anguish, “Did you thin

After Leo left with Rosette, everyone came up to help me gather what was left of Dianne’s ashes. In the end, I ended up stuffing crumbs of pieces of the carpet, chunks of soil, and shreds of fruit into the urn. They were all stained with Dianne’s ashes.I buried Dianne the same day. After burying her, there was nothing more for me to worry about. I wandered numbly around the house and began thinking about how I could exact revenge for her. Even if it meant I would take them down with me, I would do it.Three days later, Helena came to visit me at my house. Her mother happened to be a doctor at the same hospital where Dianne and Rosette were admitted. She revealed a shocking secret to me.All the hate inside me boiled over, and I completely lost my senses from thereon. At this point, Leo finally put the shrewdness and analytical ability he had learned in the business field to use. He shrugged Rosette's hand off and glared at her with a sharp look.“During the month when Clarice was away, you have been helping me take care of Dianne. That one time she had a fever, you were the one who took her to the hospital to get her treated. You have also helped attend the parent-teacher meetings and went through her homework. That means you would have access to her email.”Rosette started to cry and shake her head in denial. Tears began to fall again as she pleaded, “Why would I report myself? Why would I sabotage my career?”Leo deduced icily, “You were never good at the job anyway and have been complaining to me again and again about your colleagues ostracizing you. You just conveniently used the report to publicize our relationship.“You knew that now that the cat was out of the bag, you would get to claim the position of being my rightful wife barring any
