Our story begins in June of 1702 near the countryside of France. We start with Lord and Lady De Grace; the biggest know family in all of France. Their daughter had just turned eighteen at the beginning of the summer and it was time to begin her season. Men and boys alike would be presented as possible suitors. Lord Simon De Grace received word earlier in the week that King Francis himself would be presenting his son, Prince Louis. Just the other day, he got word that to find peace, Queen Anne of England was sending her son, Prince William. There were so many suitors already that had accepted the invitation for tonight's ball. Lord Simon was just relieved he wouldn't have to do the picking of a husband; he left that to his daughter. A few years ago, a tragic accident had claimed the lives of three of Lord Simon's children and almost his youngest daughter. Due to that, everyone knew that Lord Simon and his wife, Lady Violet, had agreed there would be no arranged marriages. The lord and lady were looking over the lists when Lord Simon noticed the worried look on his wife's face.
“What is it, darling?"
"I don't know. What if she doesn't find anyone tonight? Or if she decides she not ready this year?"
"There's going to be a lot of people here tonight. More are expected to arrive. If she doesn't find anyone tonight, she has all season. If she decides she's not ready this year, Pierre will be standing by to get her out and up to her room safely."
Lady Violet smiled and kissed her husband, then left to check on her daughter's dress. Ms. Lola, the seamstress, was given a room just so she could make the dress. Lady Violet designed the dress herself. It was the most beautiful dress Ms. Lola had ever made or seen. It was made of purple silk and lace fabric with silver trimming and accenting along the bottom. The bodice and waist were lined with real diamonds. The shoes matched her dress perfectly. There was a diamond necklace and earrings and pins to go in her hair. Ms. Lola was startled a bit by Lady Violet's entrance.
"How are things progressing, Ms. Lola?"
"Almost finished, my lady. I just need her to try it on, so I can see if I need to make any alterations to it."
"I'll go and fetch her then.”
Lady Violet left for the garden. Her daughter's friends were over, and they usually have tea out in the garden. She was pleased to find out that she wasn't wrong. Her daughter's back was facing her, but she could see the faces of Camila and Bonnie; both ladies as well. All three friends would be starting their season together. Lady Violet knew that her daughter and her friends loved doing everything together. About the only thing the three didn't do together was ride horses. Bonnie was afraid of horses, so she never rode. Her daughter and Camila rode all the time. Mainly when Bonnie could not join them for the day.
"Good afternoon, ladies. I hate to interrupt your tea time, but Ms. Lola needs you to try the dress on, my dear. Bonnie, Camila, you can join us if you'd like."
"Great idea, mother. I have something I need to tell you all."Bonnie and Camila smiled and nodded. All four women headed to the house to meet Ms. Lola in the downstairs fitting room. When they got there, Ms. Lola had her step up on the stool and she put the dress on her. She began placing pins in a few spots and raising the bottom a little. The nurse, Chloe was called in at Lady Violet's daughter's request. When she came in and everyone was sitting down, Lady Violet asked her daughter to start.
"What's on your mind, dear?"
"I know King Francis and Prince Louis are coming. Along with Prince William of England. Which I find to be a huge honor to be considered as a possible match for a prince. But....father says I should listen to my heart when picking a husband. That I shouldn't worry about duty or responsibility. I know I want to marry for love, but if I marry a prince, I'm afraid that love won't be enough. I want to be the only woman for my husband. The woman that he thinks about all the time. Now, I've also thought about if a prince proposed and I said no. No other man in his right mind would want me. So, this leaves me between love and responsibility. I'm just so confused on what to do."
"Just relax and have fun tonight. It's just your first night of the season. If you get too nervous, Pierre will not be far. Tomorrow, we can talk about the men you saw over lunch. Just be yourself and everything will be all right."
"Don't forget that Bonnie and I will be there. If you want, we'll stay with you as much as possible."
"Thank you, Camila. Mother's right, I just need to relax. I think I'll take a short nap before the ball. That's if you’re finished, Ms. Lola? Chloe, go get my bed ready. Oh, and I want a bath ready for me for when you wake me later, please."
"Camila and I are going to get going. We need to check on our dresses. Some of us don't have a personal seamstress. We'll see you tonight."
"Go up, get some rest, I'll see you later, darling. I have a few more things to look over for tonight."
She left, leaving her alone for the moment. She saw every reason to be worried, while at the same time, no reason at all. She went upstairs, and Chloe had the bed all ready for her. She just needed some rest. She'd be fine when she awoke and had her bath. That same morning, in Spain. A young man was arguing with his father about getting married. "Father, I do not wish to marry so soon. I am only twenty-three years old. Why the rush anyway, you are still a young guy, yourself."
In Lord De Grace's home, everyone was finishing for the ball. It was two hours until the guests were to arrive, and Chloe was waking up her lady. The bath was prepared and steaming. The dress, shoes, jewelry, and pins were laid out. There were a couple of extra things laid out for Chloe to help get her ready. In the wash room, Chloe sat talking with her lady as she soaked in the tub. "My lady, if I may be so bold to say if you're worried about choosing a husband and you fear being alo
Suddenly, a handsome looking young man with bright green eyes came and stood next to her. When she looked over at him, she could see light brown hair, and was better dresses than any lord she had ever seen. Then he looked down at her and began to speak. "This a fabulous party. One of the biggest I've ever seen."
While the two of them were arguing, she caught the stare of a dark hair, dark-eyed, and dark-skinned man that had just walked in with two other men. She wanted to hear his voice because if it sounded as good as he looked, she'd fall in love with him. From the moment Felipe walked in and caught her staring at him, he was unable to look away from her. She was the most beautiful creature he'd ever laid eyes on. Aqua blue eyes with perfect blonde hair. She had light skin that showed a bit of a tan. He was so mesmerized by her that he didn't even hea
He knew what she was talking about more than she could ever know. He knew her sister, Alana, for Prince Antonio was his older brother. After Alana died, his brother was never the same. They danced and chatted in both French and Spanish. They laughed, which angered Prince Louis. So much so that he left the party. He told Lord Simon that he'd call on Amaya tomorrow morning for breakfast. Simon asked Camila to pull Amaya aside for a while. On her way across the dance floor, she accidentally bumped into a gentleman. Little did she know that it was on purpose. When Camila looked up, she saw the most handsome man she'd ever seen.
At the townhouse, Carlos and Emilio was going on and on about the girls they met. Felipe was off in another world in his mind. He kept thinking about her. Her name was Amaya De Grace. Perfect name for such a perfect person. All of sudden, Carlos brought him back to reality. " Felipe, are you here with us or back at the ball with Amaya?"
There was a lot of traffic today because it was warm and sunny. They were stopped due to some commotion up ahead. Pierre told her to stay inside. She did, but she opened the door to see. The police were chasing a man who tried to sneak into someone's home. The man was running through the carriages and saw her door open and jumped in and shut the door. When he looked up, they saw that they knew each other. It was Felipe. Pierre began to get down to remove the intruder, but Amaya shooed him off.&nbs
They ate lunch and talked. For a prince, she enjoyed getting to know him. They talked for what seemed hours. She laughed at all of his stupid jokes, and he just gazed at her. Everything seemed to be going perfectly. She even forgot that he was a prince. They kept slipping in between Spanish and French when they were talking. After about four hours, Pierre came in and told her it was time to go. Felipe walked her out to her carriage and told her that he would try to call on her tomorrow. She smiled, and he bid her a farewell. Pierre took her home and now she had to talk to her parents. Felipe was in perfect heaven as long as he was with her. He went back to the townhouse to rest for a while. Meanwhile, Amaya was trying to get through the biggest storm yet.
The crowning was one he knew he'd never forget. She was a perfect vision in ivory and gold. Her train was held by six maids as she walked down to him. She looked magnificent and proud as she walked to him. When she grabbed his hand, he knew she was terrified. He could feel her trembling. He gripped her hand to steady her and he smiled at her as the priest spoke the words. They knelt down to their knees and the priest crowned her as his queen. He looked very happy to next to her and this angered some.Later that night, he worshipped her like a queen and she moaned so loud, you could hear her through the palace. Amaya lay spent next to Felipe and held his hand as she drifted off to sleep. Felipe watched her sleep and thanked God for this woman. She had made moves that no one else could. He knew he had to get some sleep. He was meeting with Eva and Ernesto in the morning. He sat up at the sound of Algeria crying in the next room. He got up and saw the nurse wi
The next day, Amaya said goodbye to her friend and returned to Spain. She got there midafternoon and noticed Felipe’s horse out front. She panicked for a moment but kept her cool as she walked in.Everyone gave her a look and Chloe walked up to her with a worried look."Where is he?"
She led her to her father’s study. He was talking with some other men. When Eva knocked on the door. He told the other men to leave. Eva walked in followed by Amaya. He relaxed against his seat when he saw Amaya. “Amaya, I must say it is a surprise to see you. With the war, you should be home.”&n
They bowed as she walked past them to inform the guards of the news. They spread the word. Amaya went to check on progress at the brothel. The ladies had worked long and hard and it was finally done. They were all pleased when they saw her walk in. “Your highness, it's completed. Would you like to see it?”
Felipe stayed for the next two days, trying to put off going back. They both knew he had to. The night before he had to leave, he was lying in bed with Amaya and Alegría. He was regretting leaving them. Amaya noticed the look on Felipe’s face and asked him what was wrong. “Felipe, I know that look. What's on your mind?”
All of them went to the bottom. Once they got there, they began to unblock the doors and clean the tunnels. Amaya pulled Maria aside. “I know you understand french. I don't want the other girls to know what I need you to do. No one knows how far along I really am. I wanting all this done now because I'll give birth soon. I know you and I don't like each other but I am trusting you. Can I depend on you?”
“That's enough. He's gone and I can't change it. With both of them gone, this is my country now. I need to start acting like it. There's stuff that needs to be done.” “What do you want to be done, my lady?”
He kissed her on the forehead and then left. She wasn’t really mad at him, but with her being pregnant, anything could set her off. She really didn’t want him to go but knew he had to. As she heard him shuffle about downstairs with the servants, she hurt more and more knowing that he would have to leave. She began crying when she heard someone tell Felipe devastating news. “My prince, I'm sorry to interrupt you. We got word that England invaded late last night. Your father left out early this morning with half the army. He
“Are you insane? Not only are you not supposed to be out of bed, but you are sleeping with a horse in your lap. What is wrong with you?” “You know what, screw you. You try being six months pregnant with your first child, then being told you can't do anything and that you have to stay in bed for three days straight. You'll never know how that feels, the pain I go through, and everything else. You did this
