I read ' The Last Good Man ' by Patience Swift in my first year in college. What had attracted me to the book was the name - The Last Good Man.

I couldn't agree more with Patience Swift that Sam was literally the last good man on earth because it was obvious that the earth was becoming something else. In fact, at the time, I concluded that he was the last man, the rest of us living on planet earth were animals, and the wild ones preyed on the domestic ones. It was evident in everyday life that there were two factions in the world; the predators, and the prey, and every prey was trying so hard to become a predator, while the predators were still on their toes, lest they fall from their status as predators down to the level of prey. The government sector, the economic sector, even the educational sector, all of them contained predators and prey, and the lie that the prey listen to each time it was time for elections was always " I'm here to help", coming straight from the mouth of bea

Hunter's POV I stomped on my accelerator, increasing from 90 km/hr to 110 km/hr on a road that had a 50 km/hr sign. But I couldn't care less, not with the call I had received from my dad's secretary. Everything was becoming blurry, even more blurry as tears rushed down my eyes unknowingly. I overtook vehicles , speeding up like a mad man, honking so loudly to alert other drivers of my surly approach. I was almost thrown over through my car window as I sped over a speed bump, making me realize that I was too much in a haste that I forgot to put on my seatbelt. " This is the State Security Service, we request that you pull over right now", the cops behind me said with their speakers, obviously referring to me. They had started tailing me about three minutes ago, blasting their sirens to make me pull over, but that didn't seem to work so they ventured to their speakers. " The driver in the red Ferrari, pull over right now!" another voice said through the speaker, angrier than

" My boy, you really have to pull yourself together. The fact that your father left us doesn't mean that the world has come to an end", our housekeeper, Ma Erica said as she walked into my room and saw me crying myself to death. A lot had happened in just a few days; I had lost my father, spent a good amount of time in jail, and also sustained injuries that almost left my face scarred, my signature fine face. " Look", she sat near my feet and I sat up to give her the impression that I was paying attention, " your late father; bless his gentle soul, would never have wanted you to be in this current state, feeding yourself tears for drink and isolation for bread. He would never have wanted you to stop living your life". My eyes which were puffy and dried up of tears were ignited, and tears started flowing effortlessly. I looked at her as I cried and she immediately understood the question on my mind, it was evident on my face - what life are we talking about? The one that ended wit

  • My Father's Wish     Chapter Three

Hazel's POV Getting married was one thing, getting married to Hunter was another. The news was everywhere in the business world, that before he would inherit his father's fortune he would have to be married to me. My parents were overly excited about the news, claiming that the marriage would strengthen their friendly bond with his late father; I wondered what kind of non-existential bond they were trying to strengthen, especially with a dead man. Why not visit a shaman or a church? Must I have to be married off? They never even asked if I was into guys in the first place before hurrying to marry me off to Hunter. My opinion was invalid and that was it. I got out of bed with a slight headache and made my way to the restroom. As I brushed my mouth, I felt the toothbrush prick my gum, causing a little bleeding in my mouth. I was immediately reminded of the beating, the bullying that left me with far more blood in my mouth than I had in my body. Hunter did it to me, he caus

" Who the hell are you?" I shouted with every air in my lungs, the sound coming out like a shriek. The figure with crossed legs slowly turned to reveal Hunter's face, his cold blue eyes shooting bullets into my chest. " What the hell are you doing here?" I asked, coming closer to the couch he was sitting on. There was no response. " I said, what the hell are you doing here?" " That is no way to speak to your beloved husband, is it?" he calmly said, the words ' beloved husband ' sounding like poop to the ears. " You still have not answered my question. What the hell are you doing here? And how did you even get in?" I was holding on tightly to my briefcase, careful enough to control my emotions before the case would end up smashing someone's head. " Your mother brought me here, and insisted that I stay. She probably expects us to consummate our marriage tonight", he said, making me wonder what was making me more angry about him; the fact that he was still sitting majestically o

Hunter's POV The gate's car type recognition system beeped, allowing the gate to open manually while I drove in. The drive to Hazel's place had lasted for about forty minutes; all thanks to how fast my car was. It would've probably taken an hour. His house was situated at Henderson estate, south of Nevada. The area was indeed great, with houses that seemed like Five Star resorts with beautiful gardens, thatched hut, swimming pools, water fountains and the rest. I drove into his aboard, surrounded by wonderful ornamental vegetation that were trimmed into different and yet beautiful shapes that led to the house. In front of the house was a water fountain, adding a touch of elegance to the outdoor space. " I'm sure you're going to love the house", my mother in-law, Mrs Mcman said when she had driven me to the house the day before yesterday, " Hazel is usually very well reserved and likes to keep his things orderly", she said, inputting the house code and ushering me in. I co

  • My Father's Wish     Chapter Six

We smiled at each other, about to join the others in the living room when I magically tripped and fell, with Hazel falling on top of me. You know those scenes in movies where the girl falls to the ground in slow motion and the guy saves the day, grabbing her by the waist and both of them lovingly staring at each other in surprise and shock while a romantic song played in the background? I was always mesmerized by it, and I never believed that such was possible, I mean, not unless you're as light as a sheet of paper; even paper falls to the ground more speedily than those girls, especially in k-dramas. Well, not until that moment. I was pretty sure that the fall lasted for minutes because for the very first time, in-between that moment of tripping and getting to the floor, I noticed how handsome he was, how enchanting his green eyes were, cand how endearing his Adam's apple was - movies can really happen in real life. We landed on the floor, his weight against mine, his b

  • My Father's Wish     Chapter Seven

Hazel's POV His blue eyes. That was all I could see and just looking at them made me feel as if I was floating, all alone on a vast blue sea. But then something distracted me, a little pain in-between my legs, together a feeling that something was stroking me. " What the hell am I doing?" I thought to myself, jumping off of him from the floor only for my already hard dick to tear out of my underwear as I was standing up, fully erect like a giant anaconda right in front of Hunter. I fell silent. He fell silent too, and the only sound I could hear was the yucky sound of my dick growing harder and harder, getting even painful and brick-firm. I stared down at it and at Hunter, back to it again and back again at Hunter. His eyes were almost falling out of their sockets but I was quite convinced that mine had already fallen out, probably rolling somewhere on the floor. " Shit!" I exclaimed after ten seconds of staring back and forth at my anaconda and at Hunter which

Nobody told me to gently get my hand off the fridge. " I'm not gonna stay here and exchange words with you but I will tell you one thing: you better withdraw that lawsuit and drop those charges, or else....", I held myself from going further. It will be too bad if I don't get to carry out any threat I make so not making it in the first place seems safer. " Or else what?", he asked, his eyes piercing mine, staring emotionlessly into mine, " you and I know you can't do shit, so quit being so childish". He knew what he was doing. Hazel Mcman: CEO of IC corporations gets tried for sexual assault - that seemed like a very interesting news headline and that was what he was trying to create. I didn't want to think about what would happen if things should get to that level; our sales will automatically drop, our stock exchange would plummet, our investors will withdraw, it was a whole lot, and just thinking about it gave me the chills. He pushed me out of his way with his shou

  • My Father's Wish     Chapter Thirty-one

Hazel's POV Mothers can always be trusted. Trusted to nag, and nag, and nag, and never stop nagging. I literally didn't get past one bite of food without her reminding me that I was irresponsible for not bringing Hunter along for the mid-week family dinner. If she didn't say it with her mouth, she said it with her eyes and her attitude. I wondered how dad was able to survive all his years of marriage with the beautiful grumpy old lady who could literally nag the devil to death. A little advice for young people out there; never live with your parents. Never try that, especially when you have a mom like mine. Unless you're willing and able to sacrifice your peace of mind. I went straight to my room as soon as I got back from that den of the lioness, feeling grateful that my limbs were still intact. I went to bed immediately and the sun was so gracious that it rose even before I could close my eyes properly, making me wonder if something had gone wrong with the Earth's rotary

  • My Father's Wish     Chapter Thirty

A heart disease. Yeah, that had to be the explanation. I was probably suffering from a heart disease because my heart was beating way too fast for it to be functioning appropriately. I really should have considered going over to the medical laboratory students to get my blood pressure checked because I was damn sure it was going to be over a hundred and fifty. " Um, I don't know what to say", I looked up to him; literally looked up to him because he was like six feet tall and I was like a five or something, so I looked up to him, into his eyes, " thank you so much", I said, smiling. " You're welcome", he said and then came the tension. Not really a tension but a certain kind of awkward moment where we both didn't know what to say and consequentially just stood there, looking at each other in the face. " Well um, I'll leave you to get on with what you're doing. I'll be in the car", he said, scratching the back of his head in what seemed like nervousness. " Okay. I'll be s

  • My Father's Wish     Chapter Twenty-nine

Do you know that movie, Inside Out 2? Where Joy had introduced to Sadness, Anger, Disgust and Fear the super high tech Riley protection system through which they dispose most of Riley's most embarrassing moments into the back of the mind? Yeah. Right there inside the car with Basil at the red light, the memory I made there was one of those which I would encourage my own joy to send straight to the back of my mind without thinking twice. I would even beseech her to do so. " What is it? Is something wrong with your eyes?" I heard Basil ask and I immediately opened my eyes to find out that I had not gotten the kiss. I looked at myself and realized that he was trying to put my seatbelt on for me, not kiss me - how stupid could I be. " Yeah, yes, I think an insect found its way into my eyes", I said as I started scratching my eyes, looking for the imaginary insect that had flown into it from nowhere, wallowing in the pool of shame and embarrassment, just like waving at an unfamilia

  • My Father's Wish     Chapter Twenty-eight

Hunter's POV A new day brings with it new possibilities and hope, and as I summarized my sleep by tilting from side to side on the bed, I remembered that I had a school function to prepare for - just wonderful. It was the World Mental Health day and as the president of the Students welfare, I had come up with a little activity to create more awareness of mental health. One of our students committed suicide just a couple of months ago, a normal looking, no family issues, intelligent freshman, just out of the blue decided to end his life. People could never find a reason why he decided on that, but the truth is that there is always more to something than what actually meets the eye. What we normally see isn't just about everything there is. Take for instance the case of the Mendez brothers who brutally murdered their parents and paged it as a homicide. It wasn't until later that a detective noticed that they were living life way too happy for people that had just lost their paren

  • My Father's Wish     Chapter Twenty-seven

That was one weird dream. Rationally it should be referred to as a nightmare, if not for anything, for the fact that Hunter and Sasha appeared in it. I got out of bed and the things I was working on from last night were still littered everywhere, on every single part of the room. I took some time to arrange everything so my room doesn't keep looking like a trash site and headed straight to the bathroom to get ready for the day. I got down and made myself a toast. I was about to brew coffee when I discovered that my Italian coffee grains were finished, and that meant that I just had to eat the toasted bread and be on my way. I could hear some noise in Hunter's room and that made it obviously clear that he was still upstairs. Basil wasn't even there yet so it seemed as if he would be having late classes. I ate my bread solo as I went through the iPad, checking my schedule for the day. Just paperwork and project approvals, and then dinner with mom and dad - oh my God, it was

  • My Father's Wish     Chapter Twenty-six

Hazel's POV Sasha has always been daring; that was one of the things I had liked about her to be frank, but I never imagined that she would be so daring to appear before me after that scene with Cole. She was flamboyant and outgoing and colorful and I loved all that, but when the cheating qualification was added to her resume, I started hating every other thing that I had liked about her. Meeting her at the food factory really destroyed my day, and for the rest of the day I couldn't just concentrate, even my meeting with the tech company didn't go as I had planned. We didn't discuss the major problems we were facing as a tech company, especially since Apple and Samsung were hellbent on driving us out of business. I stayed over at the company doing some paperwork and approving some projects until the sun disappeared into the west horizon. I heard a knock on my door and was actually surprised that Miss May had not gone home; she was one of my employees who usually stayed till

  • My Father's Wish     Chapter Twenty-five

" Are you leaving now?" Bryan asked, packing his things into his bag. " Yeah, I'm already so tired", I said doing the same thing as him. " I thought you were going to stay for the Economics Student Association (ESA) meeting?" " I would've loved to but I can't. I'm really tired, and besides it's already late", I checked my wrist watch, " look, it's a few minutes past 4 pm, and only God knows when they'll be able to start the meeting and dismiss, probably by 7 pm", we took our bags; our side bags and laptop bags and headed out of the school building. " Where's your ride home?" he asked as we got to the parking lot. " Well, I won't be driving for a while now. I was pulled over by the police yesterday and they found out that I hadn't completed probation before driving again so they extended the time for probation" I said, standing in front of his car and two cars away from mine. " Oh, so how did you get to school then? A cab?" " No, him", I pointed towards the car. Basil w

  • My Father's Wish     Chapter Twenty-four

Hunter's POV Statistical Economics was ongoing in class, but I couldn't just concentrate. I mean, how could I possibly concentrate when Basil's words kept ringing in my ears. The fact that he told me that what I had done was beautiful filled my belly with butterflies. The lecturer was saying something, something about Cross Median Modifications and Standard Economic Derivation but I wasn't paying attention, the attention in question became expensive to pay. Looking at me from a rational perspective one would never guess that I had transcended beyond the lecture hall, far beyond the school building, and to the parking lot where Basil told me he would be at. I was looking at the lecturer, the good looking middle aged man that undoubtedly looks like he was in his thirties, his properly ironed checkered shirt, his silver wrist watch that almost had the reflective index of a diamond, and the way he moved his hands while talking; I was basically looking at all that but if I was told
