I awoke to a bed of cool silk sheets, the warmth of the morning sun streaming in through the window. I stretched my arms overhead, luxuriating in the morning light. As my eyes adjusted to the brightness, I glanced around the room, a knot forming in my stomach as I realized Drake was not there.

I sat up, clutching the sheets to my chest, my heart sinking with disappointment. I had expected to find him by my side, his arms wrapped around me. But the room was empty, the space beside me cold and empty.

Just then, there was a soft knock at the door. “Come in,” I groaned.

I leaned back against the pillows, pulling the sheets up to my chest. “What is it?” I said, irritation seeping into my voice.

“Your morning medicine, my lady,” the maid replied.

I watched as she took a mortar and pestle from the table, grinding herbs and mixing them together with practiced precision. I felt a surge of irritation as she worked, the scent of bitter herbs filling the air.
