“Don’t listen to her, Nate, don’t be gullible and fall for her words. She wants what I have, she wants to be more. Just because I am pregnant, she’s lying through her teeth. Don’t forget she is barren.”

I flinch at her words, unable to believe what is unfolding before my very eyes. Ever Since I was 20, I was constantly told that I was barren from specialized doctors, that I was unable to conceive. I raved up and down like a psychopath looking for ways…, for solutions… even though, then, it seemed impossible. It was one of the darkest moments in my life, and I was in a very bad state.

But at the time, that didn’t stop Nate. He loved me with his entire being and didn’t think that was an issue at all, he always assured me and told me that it didn’t matter to him, it was not supposed to be a barrier between two lovers. He accepted me for who I was. He promised we’d get through it side by side, even if we had to adopt children of our own. We were actually planning on doing that few months back, before I started noticing the visible changes in his actions towards me. I should’ve known because they say….. Action speaks louder than words.

“I’m not lying, Nate, please believe me,” I plead, my voice barely a whisper as I try to reach him, to remind him of the love we once shared. “I’m carrying your child, our child. This is our second chance.”

But he doesn’t respond, his eyes shifting to Claire as if seeking her approval. “So this is what it has come to huh?”

I looked into his eyes expecting even the slightest flicker of remorse but all I saw was irritation and annoyance in them.

“Wow, no really, Wow.. Clap for yourself Nathaniel Pierce, Your betrayal really surpassed my thinking. I thought you said we could adopt, that it didn’t matter. But because this…..” I turn to claire with disgust in my eyes, “this low life wh*re is carrying that… that bastard”

He quickly interjected in anger cutting me off “Don’t you fuck*ng dare point your dirty accusatory fingers at my child. You insulting me is one thing and wouldn’t really affect me, most especially coming from an unwanted loser like you, but you, trying to degrade MY CHILD and the Womb that is carrying my child. I’m warning you Daphne Sinclair i won’t take it lightly with you. I will show you my worst side.”

“Show me, I said, show me.. What is left huh? There is nothing so show me once and for all. What haven’t i seen do your worse”

“You are so damn irritating, just get the hell out of here. I do not wish to see you or anything that has to do with you. You will always remain the last option in everyone’s life, i didn't get it at first… but now i do. The problem isn’t from anyone, it is from YOU. You are unloveable. Grow the f*ck up!!!”

I was frozen in place, unable to react or say anything to him. That was very low coming from him, I thought he would understand me, even if no one else did. I thought he would forever have my back. He was the first person that read and understood me without me having to translate it for him. Even with everything being said, that one question lingered in my mind…. Am I actually the problem?

Claire stepped forward, her face a mask of cold satisfaction. “Trust me, I know exactly how to handle her.”

I couldn’t move, I couldn't blink, every tic, every toc of the clock was painfully loud and slow. Claire won and I'm not talking of just this time… she’s always won. She grabbed my arm with a ruthless grip and began dragging me towards the darkened hallway. I couldn’t even protest or fight back because I was too paralyzed. He didn’t believe me, he denied my child. I would never forgive him for that.

“You don’t get to choose your fate,” she says with a cruel smile and that’s when I took in our surroundings. She literally dragged me across the mansion and to a closed dark cell like room that was meant for dogs. It hasn’t been active since forever so it was in a very terrible state.

‘You’ve always been a fraud, and now it is time you faced the consequences.”

I was heaving, almost at the peak of throwing up. She throws open the heavy door to the cell, the harsh metal was a chilling reminder of my past, of my life.

I stumbled inside, falling to the cold, unforgiving floor as the door slammed shut behind me. The darkness enveloped me, contrasting to the warmth of love I had once known.

I was pregnant, alone and abandoned by the very people I had trusted with my life. The pain was overwhelming. I clutch my stomach knowing now I have to be strong for my child.

Because…just like he left me, so did the light in my eyes.

The cold felt like a living thing, wrapping itself around me tightly like a merciless predator. Sinking its icy claws into my flesh, clawing at my bones. I won’t be shocked if I get hypertonia by the end of the day. I had always thought I knew what cold was… growing up in a world that had never been kind to me or offered any warmth. But this.. this was something different. Something alive, something malevolent. It was all time consuming. I huddled in a corner, my arms wrapped around my knees, trying to preserve what little body heat I had left. The darkness was oppressive, broken only by the faintest sliver of light that managed to seep in through the cracks in the heavy door. It made me question myself, what if they are right? What if I am useless? I can't even protect myself not to talk about my unborn child. My breath came in short and unstable. It was the only sound in the walls I was confined in, a cellar I would prefer to call it. Apart from the faint drip of water as it fe

She stepped inside, her boots crunching on the frost-covered floor, the sound echoing in the silence. Her breath formed white clouds in the air, the same as mine, but while mine were ragged and desperate, hers were calm, and measured. She enjoyed this, I knew. She enjoyed seeing me like this—broken, helpless.“Look at you,” she taunts, “Reduced to nothing, just like you deserve.”I kept my gaze fixed on the ground, my teeth chattering uncontrollably. I didn’t want to look at her, didn’t want to see the glee in her eyes, the satisfaction of seeing me like this. But I knew she wouldn’t let me hide for long.“Look at me,” she commanded, her voice sharp and cold.I hesitated, but then slowly, I lifted my head. Our eyes met, and I was struck by how much she looked like me—or rather, how much I should have looked like her. She was everything I was not—strong, confident, cruel. She had the life that should have been mine. I was her. Her lips curled into a smile as she reached into the bag

The creak of the door was almost inaudible, but in the suffocating silence, it sounded like a thunderclap. Nate’s silhouette cut a dark, menacing figure as he stepped inside, his shoulders stiff with anger. I could hardly breathe as I watched him, my heart pounding in my chest. He slammed the door behind him, the jarring noise echoing through the small space. I flinched, my hands gripping the edge of my rumpled blouse as if it could anchor me against the storm brewing in his eyes. His face was contorted, twisted with a fury I’d seen before but never to this extent. He threw a stack of documents toward me with an aggression that made my stomach churn. The papers scattered across the floor like leaves in a storm, their contents glaring up at me.“What are these?” I knew exactly what they were but I just couldn't believe it, talkless of accepting it. All the exhaustion seemed to leave my body and I jerked forward. “Do not fucking waste my time Daphne, you can clearly see what those are.

My body was in immense pain and I couldn't move, I couldn't breathe. But I could hear everything that was going on around me. I tried to lift my fingers but I couldn’t. The hushed chatters continued and I heard the words incoherently, it started feeling more audible and I recognized his voice. My Nate, “Quick do something, she's losing blood’ he says. I feel my body leaving the ground and he scoops me in his arms, moving swiftly. I felt drops of liquid on me yet I couldn't keep my eyes open. I tried to groan, to scream but to no avail. I heard sniffling sounds come out of him. ‘Please baby, don’t die on me.”I felt I was placed on the bed. “Call the doctor, hurry” he barks at Claire while rubbing my hands and applying pressure on my stomach. He raised my blouse and tried cleaning the blood off, the cramps were unbearable. “Doctor, you are here, do anything you can to help. I ran my hand through my hair several times to make myself look more disheveled, and tears began to pool in my eyes.Suddenly, Nate rushed in, lifted her lifeless body, and placed her in the back seat. He started the car, and we headed straight to the outskirts of the city, deep into a forest where it's unlikely anyone would venture. This was the best option because it had fewer risks. By morning, wild animals would likely feed on her body, leaving no trace, or she might decompose quickly since it is unlikely that any sane person would go to a remote area. I didn't feel safe burying her at the mansion. what if the watchman stumbled upon us and blackmailed us? Sebastian’s POVThe first time I saw Daphne, something shifted in me. There was something about her—fragility masked by a fiery determination—that captivated me in a way I couldn’t explain. She wasn’t just beautiful; she was magnetic, drawing me in like a moth to a flame. But tonight, it wasn’t just her strength or her sharp tongue that caught my attention. It was her vulnerability, the way her body stiffened under the watchful eyes of those twisted old men in the room. Their gazes lingered on her like predators sizing up prey, and it took every ounce of self-control I had not to lose it there and then. I clenched my fists, fighting back the rage boiling inside me. This wasn’t the time or place. I had to play the part, no matter how much it sickened me. When the bidding began, I raised my paddle without hesitation. I wasn’t bidding for art; I was protecting her from the leering eyes of monsters. When the hammer fell and the art was “mine,” I felt a twisted mix of relief and disgust.

“Daphne? Don’t panic.”I tried to respond, but my voice came out raspy, my throat tightening as though invisible hands were choking me. I gasped, desperate for air, as the room began to spin. My mind slipped into the past—dark, horrifying memories clawing their way to the surface.I was back in the stone room, surrounded by cold, damp walls that whispered torment. We were tied, naked, and broken. We didn’t dare believe escape was possible. Our captors paraded us like art, like objects. They said they were bidding on portraits, but we knew better. They were bidding on lives. My legs refused to move. I stood rooted to the spot, my trembling hands betraying the anxiety creeping in. It felt as if taking even one step closer to reality would shatter the fragile illusion that I’d escaped that life. What if I never truly had? What if this life—my freedom, my hope, Sebastian—was all a lie? A cruel trick my mind played to survive?“Was I even real?” I whispered to myself. My breath hitched. “I

I stared at the mirror, barely recognizing the face reflected back at me. My skin was pale, my lips painted deep red, and my eyes hollow but sharp. I settled for a ball gown, enough to hide my baby bump. Elegant and dangerous, this wasn’t me. It couldn’t be. But tonight, I had to be someone else —I had to be Claire. “Daphne.” Sebastian’s voice broke through my spiraling thoughts. “Are you there?” He called out from the miniature transmitter he gave me in a pin form. “Nate will be there,” he said quietly. “Stay close, blend in, and follow my lead.” I nodded, forcing down the lump in my throat. I couldn’t mess this up. I went down to the living room my heard thundering, and heels clicking against the floor. I had threatened Claire to stay and pretend to be me. It was cold and silent, the ticking clock pounding in rhythm with my heartbeat. Every breath was tight in my chest as I waited, shoulders straight, fingers trembling at my sides. Footsteps echoed behind me. “Claire.”

“I… I…” My voice faltered as my breath hitched. “Daphne? Is everything alright?” Sebastian’s voice cut through the mic, steadying me. I straightened my posture, forcing control back into my trembling hands. “Richard?” I snapped, turning to face the butler. “You caught me off guard.” His eyes widened, and his hands shook slightly. “Miss Claire… I apologize. I didn’t mean to startle you.” He bowed his head respectfully. I bit back a laugh, savoring the rush of dominance. Since my return, I’d noticed Claire had dyed her hair back to brunette, making us nearly identical again. Apparently, not even Richard could tell the difference. Lifting my chin, I channeled Claire’s practiced poise and walked out of the room, heart drumming in my chest like a distant war drum. Back in my room, I locked the door and retrieved the stolen documents, snapping photos and sending them to Sebastian. His reply came quickly: We need to act fast. Time isn’t on our side. Collapsing onto the bed, I FaceTi

It was the next day already, I was left yet again alone in the house. Father and mother were invited by the Stones for a buisness negotiation, while Claire is out to see her “doctor.” I knew she was up to something.Currently standing outside my father’s office, my palms were slick with sweat. The hallway was deathly quiet, My heart pounded so hard I thought it might echo through the empty corridor.I reached into my coat pocket and pulled out the small lockpick set Sebastian insisted I carry. My fingers trembled as I held the cold metal. Memories of my father’s punishments clawed at my mind, the only times I came here was when I did something wrong or received scoldings. The slaps, harsh condescending words, and unforgiving eyes, always compare Claire and me. This was his space. I was never supposed to be here.Suddenly, Sebastian’s calm voice crackled in my ear through the tiny microphone he’d given me.“You’ve got this, Daphne. Slow breaths. In and out.”I inhaled sharply, holdi

“Yes, you heard me right. I’m six months pregnant… and it’s a boy.”The room went silent. The air felt heavy like the walls themselves were holding their breath. Claire’s face turned ashen, her eyes widening as she struggled back to sit up.“That’s… that’s not possible,” she whispered, her voice shaky. “But…”I folded my arms, keeping my voice steady though my chest felt tight. “What’s not possible, Claire? That I’m pregnant? Or that you all thought I couldn’t have children?”I turned to my father, who stood stiff and unreadable, as always. “Nathaniel is investigating Dr. Matthews. It seems he’s been deliberately giving us false results… like he’s working for someone.” I stepped forward, holding my father’s gaze. “So… please, Dad… I’ll need your help.”His expression darkened a bit, the sharp edge of suspicion flashed in his eyes, but he said nothing.Claire squirmed like a cornered animal, her hands trembling at her sides. “N-No… don’t.” Her voice was thin, almost a plea. She let out a blood-curdling scream, her voice echoing through the house as she gripped her ears, her body shaking. The smirk that had been playing on my lips vanished instantly, replaced by shock. “Miss Claire!” Richard rushed to her side, his face pale. “Claire… Are you okay?” “No! No! Stay the hell away from me!” she shouted, her voice frantic, her legs kicking as she writhed on the floor in a fit of hysteria. I could hear frantic footsteps pounding the hallway, and the door flew open. “What is—” Her sentence was cut short when she gasped, covering her mouth. “Daphne? You’re alive?” I could hardly believe it myself. “Mother, Father!” I cried, running to them. I fell into their arms, sobbing uncontrollably. “I never thought I’d see you again.” “Are you okay? What happened?
