Sophia’s POV

The world around me seemed to shrink as I stared up at the man I’d bumped into. There was something hauntingly familiar about his deep blue eyes, the way they seemed to search mine, as if he were looking for something long lost. My heart raced, my mind scrambling to place him.

Where have I seen him before?

He took a step closer, his expression softening, a gentle smile tugging at his lips. Then, in a voice barely above a whisper, he said, “Sabrina…”

The way he said that name, so quietly yet with undeniable certainty, sent a shockwave through my entire being. My breath hitched as a memory came crashing into my mind, vivid and startling.

I was standing in front of the mural at the ice cream parlor, my hands smudged with bright splashes of paint. My younger self beamed with pride as I carefully painted the finishing touches—a swirl of pastel blue for the sky.

“Careful,” a familiar voice teased. “You’re gonna drip paint everywhere.”

I turned to see a boy standing nearby, his

Sophia’s POVAs I looked into Lucas’s eyes, a flood of memories came rushing back—him trailing me on my way home from school, sitting at the swings in the park just to be near me, and his endless attempts to impress me with silly antics.I found myself grinning as he joined us at the bar. “I think I definitely remember you.” “Took you long enough,” he joked lightly, though there was something deeper in his gaze that made me feel just a little bit uncomfortable. As if I was treading on perilous waters. We all settled at a table. Lucas leaned back in his chair, his gaze sweeping the room before landing on me. “So, Sabrina,” he said, using the name with a teasing smile, “where did life take you after school?”I smiled, relaxing slightly in his presence. “I used to live in France for a while. Studied design there and worked on a few projects before returning home.”Lucas’s eyebrows lifted with genuine interest. “France? That’s impressive. I always knew you were destined for something cr

Sophia’s POVAs I stepped out of the car, I couldn’t help but think about the kids back home with the nanny. Reese had been excited about her playdate tomorrow, Roxy was fixated on a new puzzle she wanted to finish, and Jared had insisted on showing Elijah his latest drawing. Elijah, however, had been swamped with work. His meeting had run late, and despite wanting to come tonight, he’d apologized and urged me to go ahead without him.“It’s fine,” I had told him. “You’ve been doing so much already. I’ll just catch up with Luana and Lucas.”He said he vaguely remembered Lucas, the scrawny kid who was always hanging around me. According to him, he’d never been jealous, though, because what he and Sabrina had at that time was truly special. I’d laughed at the thought, and I even had a faint memory of a similar conversation we had before about Lucas. At least my husband’s not the jealous type, I thought with relief. He trusts me completely. And now, here I was, stepping into the warmly

Sophia’s POVThe action on the screen was intense, pulling me into its fast-paced chase scenes and sharp-witted dialogue. The tension I’d felt earlier gradually loosened its grip, and I found myself reacting naturally to the twists and turns of the plot.“That was insane!” Lucas whispered at one point, his voice low but animated, as the main character narrowly escaped an explosion.I nodded, laughing softly. “Completely unrealistic, but I love it.”“Exactly,” he replied with a grin, leaning slightly closer as if sharing a secret. For the first time that evening, it felt like I could just enjoy the moment without overthinking. It was no different than watching a movie with Trevis or Kayla—just harmless fun. The weight of guilt I’d carried earlier began to ease. But then, it happened. As the movie entered a quieter, more suspenseful moment, my attention was firmly fixed on the screen. Without warning, Lucas shifted slightly in his seat, his arm brushing against mine. It was a fleeting t

Sophia’s POVI was determined to keep the evening light. “Italy sounds amazing. I’ve only been there once when I lived in France. I’ll have to visit again someday, maybe with Elijah and the kids.” I couldn’t help mentioning my family, wanting to sort of remind him that I was off-limits in the romantic sense. Not that he’d indicated anything like that. Not yet, anyway. Lucas nodded, looking bothered for a little bit before he shifted gears, his smile widening. “Do you remember how you’d never sit still during recess? You were always drawing or writing something while the rest of us were playing.”I laughed, shaking my head. “I don’t remember that much detail.”“Well, I do,” he said teasingly. “I was always trying to get your attention. Honestly, I probably annoyed you half the time.”“At least you’re self-aware,” I joked, earning a laugh from him.The more he talked, the more at ease I felt. The awkwardness that had shadowed the evening began to dissipate, replaced by a genuine enjoym

Elijah’s POVBella Sera always exuded a cozy, welcoming ambiance. But today, as I pushed the door open, the air felt different. The usual cheer seemed dampened, and my eyes immediately found Morgana, seated at her usual corner booth, looking visibly aggravated.Beside her sat Detective Marcus Vance, the investigator I had recommended. His presence confirmed what I had already suspected—things had escalated again. As I approached the table, Morgana glanced up, her face briefly softening when she saw me. “Elijah,” she said, her tone strained but grateful. “I was hoping you’d come.”“Of course I’d come,” I said, sliding into the seat across from her. My eyes flicked to Marcus. “What’s the latest?”Morgana handed me her tablet, her fingers trembling slightly. On the screen was the latest smear against Lila, posted on some entertainment blog. The headline screamed sensationalism: Lila, The Diva: How Fame Turned Her Into a Prima Donna.I skimmed the article quickly, my jaw tightening as I r

Elijah’s POV“Do I know you?” I asked the woman in front of me. She paused, amusement crossing her face as she extended a hand. “Victoria Langston. Morgana’s lawyer. We’ve met before— right here at Bella Sera.”Oh, right. It clicked now. I shook her hand briefly, feeling slightly awkward. “Of course. Sorry, it’s been a long day. And don’t worry about this,” I gestured to my soaked shirt. “I’m fine. Really.”But as I glanced at her, I noticed her blazer was completely drenched, the fabric clinging heavily to her shoulders. “You’re actually worse off than me,” I pointed out.Victoria looked down and let out a soft laugh. “You’re right. I hadn’t even realized. But now that you’ve mentioned it… Gosh, the juice is really sticky.” Without hesitation, she put down the glass she was holding and shrugged off the blazer, revealing a tailored blouse underneath. It was form-fitting, and with the fabric still damp, it clung in a way that left little to the imagination.I looked away quickly, sudd

Adrian’s POVLila was tense, her hand cold in mine despite the warm afternoon. I tightened my grip slightly, silently willing her to draw strength from me. Her resilience amazed me, but I could see how deeply these rumors being spread in public about her were affecting her. As soon as we entered, Morgana’s voice rang out. “Lila!” Her tone was a fusion of relief and surprise. Lila froze for a split second before plastering on a polite smile and leading us toward the table where Morgana, Elijah, and an unfamiliar woman sat.“Hi, Mom,” Lila greeted softly, her voice steady despite the strain I could feel emanating from her. “Hi, Elijah.” Her gaze flicked to the woman briefly. “And… hello.”The woman, poised and polished, offered a small smile. “Victoria Langston. I’m your mother’s lawyer.”Lila nodded politely, then glanced at me. I nodded at Victoria as well. “Nice to meet you. I’m Adrian.” Then I turned to Elijah and shook his hand. “Elijah, it’s been a while.” Elijah clasped my han

Adrian’s POVThe Roosevelt mansion came into view as the car eased into the circular driveway, its stately facade bathed in the setting sun. Growing up here, I’d long since grown accustomed to its grandeur—the towering columns, the meticulously trimmed hedges, the way it seemed to command attention. Yet tonight, I barely noticed it. My thoughts were entirely on the woman sitting beside me, her fingers absently toying with her bracelet. “Relax,” I said, throwing her a reassuring smile. “My father’s not as intimidating as he looks. He’s actually… well, decent these days.”Lila gave me a skeptical glance. “Decent? I’ve read about your family, Adrian. You’re practically royalty in this country.”I laughed at her dramatic tone. “You’ll be fine. Trust me.”“Tell me again why you’re bringing me to see him?” she asked as we both stepped out of the car. Laughing, I simply answered, “You’ll find out soon enough.” One of the staff greeted us and led us inside. The interior was just as imposin

I smiled, watching my children run toward the petting zoo, their energy contagious.Beside me, Emily tensed.I glanced at her, noticing how her shoulders tightened, how her eyes darted around like she was scanning for threats. She was supposed to be enjoying this—a simple afternoon in the botanical garden, surrounded by friends, fresh air, and laughter. It was the perfect opportunity for Emily to bond with Jared, without him feeling nervous or out of place. But years of running, hiding, and surviving had wired her differently. She wasn’t relaxed. She seemed to be waiting for something to go wrong. And I really couldn’t blame her. I reached for her hand, giving it a light squeeze. “You’re safe here,” I murmured.Emily forced a small smile, nodding, but her fingers still trem

Sophia’s POVThe warmth of freshly baked cookies filled the air, a scent that felt so familiar, so comforting, that for a moment, it was easy to forget all the fear and uncertainty of the past few days.My mother bustled around the kitchen, setting out plates and pouring tea, determined to make this a small celebration, in spite of her still being a bit rattled. But more than anything, I could see that she was very, very happy. Emily and Chris had showered and changed, looking far better than they had when I first walked in. The exhaustion was still there, written in the lines of their faces, but they were standing tall, present, and—most importantly—home.Elijah arrived shortly after, his presence filling the room with steady reassurance. When he saw Chris, he didn’t hesitate, pulling him into a tight embrace. They had been best friends since childhood, and after everything Chris had been through, I could see the relief in Elijah’s eyes. He held onto Emily for a moment, too, murmuri

Sophia’s POVMy heart pounded as I gripped the phone tighter. "Mom? What’s wrong?"There was a moment of silence, just soft, uneven breaths on the other end of the line. My stomach twisted painfully. "Mom, talk to me!""S-Sophia…" her voice cracked, and I felt my chest constrict. "They’re here."I blinked, my mind struggling to keep up. "Who’s here?""Chris and Emily. They’re home."I inhaled sharply, my breath catching in my throat. For a second, I couldn't move, couldn't think. My pulse raced as my mind fought to process what she had just said.Chris and Emily are back.My grip on the phone loosened, my knees nearly buckling from the sudden rush of emotions. Relief, disbelief, overwhelming gratitude."Oh my God," I whispered, pressing a hand to my chest. "Are they okay?""I… I don’t know," my mother admitted, still sounding shaken. "They haven’t said much. But you need to come quick."I didn’t hesitate. "I’ll be right there."As I ended the call, I turned to see Elijah watching me,

Sophia’s POVThe kitchen was quiet except for the faint sizzle of eggs in the pan. It was still very early in the morning, and I could see the sun rising through the window. Normally, I would have stopped to admire the view. But my mind was still preoccupied with a lot of chaotic things. I had barely slept.Everything Lucas had told me last night still lingered in my mind, a tangled mess of unanswered questions and uneasy truths. Hugo Tournier. He had been part of my family's past all along, a ghost lurking in the shadows, and now he was back. It settled over me like a heavy fog, impossible to shake. But as much as my thoughts circled around Hugo, it was Elijah’s reaction that unsettled me more. The way he had looked at me. The sharpness in his voice when he told me I didn’t need to talk to Lucas anymore, that Joe would handle the investigation. He hadn’t accused me outright, but I could feel the tension beneath his words. The distance. Lucas was a sensitive issue between us—alwa

Sophia’s POVLucas stood in front of me, his face partially shadowed by the porch light, his eyes unreadable but filled with something that made my stomach twist—regret, sorrow, maybe even guilt.“I don’t even know where to start,” he murmured, running a hand through his hair.I crossed my arms, bracing myself. “Just tell me what you found.”He exhaled sharply, nodding. "I started looking into the records of missing children around the time you disappeared. A lot of reports were vague, but… I found something." He hesitated before continuing, his voice tight. "There was an old witness statement—a retired cop who had once suspected a man named Hugo Tournier."My breath hitched. The name. I had heard it before. Grandpa George had mentioned it when we talked about the man who might have taken me.Lucas continued, unaware of my growing realization. "The name meant nothing to me at first, but when I dug deeper, I realized it was connected to your family."My pulse quickened. “Connected how?

Emily’s POVDarkened streets stretched endlessly ahead as we sped through the city, the glow of neon signs flickering across the windshield. The sound of other cars was distant, almost muffled, drowned out by the pounding of my heart. My grip tightened on the edge of my seat, eyes darting to every shadowed alley, every figure on the sidewalk. It felt like eyes were on us—watching, waiting.Chris’s grip on the wheel was tight, his jaw set in a hard line. He hadn’t said much since we got the warning. The burner phone lay silent between us, the last message still glowing on the screen:“Do not go to the docks. You are being watched.”I swallowed hard. "Who sent it?""No idea," Chris muttered. "Could be someone helping us. Could be someone luring us into another trap."My stomach twisted. "So what do we do?"He exhaled sharply, eyes darting to the rearview mirror. "We can’t risk it. If someone’s waiting for us at the docks, we won’t stand a chance. We haven't been able to reach Crimson Ve

Sophia’s POVJared was safe. That was all that mattered. We were gathered in the house, the weight of the night still pressing heavily on our shoulders. But at least Jared was asleep now, curled up in his bed like nothing had happened. He hadn’t seemed afraid, hadn’t even realized the gravity of what Antoine had done. And for that, I was grateful. The last thing I wanted was for him to carry fear because of this. But once he woke up, I knew I would have to face the reality of telling him about his father. And why it was only now that he was finding out about Antoine. “We’re not pressing charges,” I had told Elijah. But we did have to watch our backs more carefully, to stay guarded and alert all the time. And we needed to make sure never to let Jared out of our sights again. Still, we had made Antoine promise never to pull something like this again. Not that his word meant much. I didn’t trust him, and I knew Elijah didn’t either. This wasn’t over. Not really.Phoebe sat beside me,

My heart pounded in my ears, my breaths coming fast and shallow.“We need to check the parking lot exits,” Elijah said, his voice tight with controlled fury. “If Antoine took Jared, he won’t risk staying here much longer.”Elijah nodded, pulling out his phone and dialing Joe. The moment Joe answered, Elijah got straight to the point. “Antoine’s here. He took Jared. We need to know if he has a car registered in his name or any known places he might go.”I looked at Elijah in anticipation. He nodded then ended the call. "He said he'll get back to us soon."My eyes darted around the busy corridor, searching for any sign of our son.Jared, my sweet boy. Please be okay.My mind screamed his name with every step I took, my hands trembling as I grabbed Phoebe’s arm, trying to keep both of us steady.“He has to be here,” Phoebe said, her voice shaking as she wiped at her tear-streaked face. “He has to be here somewhere.”I wanted to believe her. I had to believe her. But the sheer panic clawing at my throat made it hard to hold on to hope. Jared wasn’t just missing—he seemed to have vanished into thin air. And the longer he was gone, the worse the possibilities became.“Elijah’s talking to security,” I said, scanning every store, every passerby, searching for even a glimpse of him. “They’re checking the cameras. We just have to keep looking.”Phoebe nodded frantically, but guilt was etched into every
