HAZEL
I would cry myself most times to sleep. Life was hard after my sudden divorce. One moment, I was living the best life I could ever imagine with my husband and the next moment, it was the complete opposite. He offered to give me some money but I refused because I knew I didn't do anything wrong. I took my siblings and left the city. I didn't want anything to remind me of him. He was the one I gave my all to but he tossed me aside when he was tired of me.
I could barely provide two meals per day for my siblings because of the nature of my job. I wasn't an illiterate but I couldn't land the perfect job because I had no experience. I was the typical housewife when I was married. What I could find as the highest paying job was the job of a part-time housekeeper. I loved my job because it gave me time to learn other skills and carry out other little tasks for which I got paid.
The unexpected happened that morning. I got to my place of work as usual and started with the cleaning. Unfortunately for me, my boss's husband was around. He mentioned something about being on a break. I ignored him and went about my work. I had finished cleaning the living room and was headed for the dining room when he suddenly grabbed my arse from behind. I dropped the equipment and with a swift twirl, I slapped him hard across the face. It was at that same moment my boss entered the living room.
"What's going on here?" She asked. Her curious eyes moved from me to her husband who held his reddened jaw. He stared daggers at me while I glared at him.
"She slapped me because I was trying to correct her." He replied to her question, just like the coward and use*less man he was.
"Get out of my house!" She barked. She didn't even want to hear my side of the story.
"You will pay for this, sir. Mark my words!" I swore with tears welling up in my eyes before leaving their house for good. My tears were pouring heavily because I was utterly pained. My major source of income had been abolished because of a dog who couldn't control himself.
Angrily unlocking the door to the house, I heard a car pulling up in the driveway. I didn't bother looking back because I already knew who it was. I plonked on the old creaky couch, sobbing. I was at a loss for what to do next with my life. Why didn't that man just let me keep my job?
"Girl!" Liya slammed the door when she saw the state I was in.
"Careful! You don't want to ruin that too!" I exclaimed. The door was already old and could break down at the slightest extra force exerted on it. I wiped my tears quickly and stood up.
"Sorry, I'm just having one of those down moments." I sniffled and walked to the kitchen counter."Shouldn't you be at work or something?"When I looked up at her, I saw a soft look on her face. It was a look of pity and I hated it.
"I came to tell you something very important.""If it's about that site, I don't want to hear it," I spoke in a dismissive tone. Days back, she had spoken about a newly launched dating site and wanted me to try it out. I refused but we went ahead to open an account with my name.
"Hazel," She walked over to me and placed her hands on my shoulder.
"You won't be able to move forward quickly with a twenty dollar job daily. You have yourself and your siblings to take care of.""And what's the dating site going to do for me? You know how much I detest men."
"Hazel, it's been four years. You need to move on with your life. You could meet someone who could offer you a nice job with your qualifications. Dating isn't all about sex if that's what you're thinking. It's about growth too. Any man who likes you would love to see you grow and would do anything to help you."
My mind was greatly clouded with thoughts. But she was right. I couldn't continue to live in the past. I needed to start afresh. And this date might probably be just the thing to help me.
"I will send you the details of the meeting later today. I have to get back to work, honey. Take care of yourself." She embraced me tightly before scurrying through the door. I sighed and placed both elbows on the counter. For the first time in four years, I was going to dress up and meet with the opposite gender.
Moments later, I received a message from Liya. I sighed before opening it. I was supposed to meet this estranged person by 8 that evening. The message also stated the venue of the meeting. Unlike me, I prayed that the date would go extremely well. It was all I was hoping for now.It was still morning so I had time to cook lunch for the twins before going to my room to look for something suitable to wear. I didn't want to dress up all nicely because I didn't want the man to think I was desperate, even though I was.
*****
Toward 8 p.m., I began my journey to the venue after making sure my siblings were comfortable inside. The weather was getting bad and I made sure they put on the right clothes. Though they were past sixteen, I still treated them like they were still five. But I wasn't to be blamed. They were everything I had left.I sat in the warm, cozy room waiting for whoever my date was. All I knew about him was his name; Alex. I sat close to the window so I could spot him when coming in. But after waiting for an hour, I got annoyed and opted to leave. I even stopped checking to see if he'd be coming. The one time I wanted to give a man a chance, I get stood up. This just tainted my pride.
I clutched my bag tightly and stood up. As I turned to leave, I bumped into someone. My eyes caught a pair of masculine shoes. His scent was pleasant and intoxicating but almost too familiar.
"I'm sorry," I said with a lowered face and wanted to scurry away but he grabbed my hand. I looked up to see the stranger who had the audacity to touch me. I was about to rain some abusive words on the fella but seeing his face, I went dumb for some seconds.
"Alex?!" I yelled, surprised. It was then everything made sense to me.
"Hazel?" He called out in a rather soft tone.
I couldn't believe my eyes. I was on a date with my ex-boyfriend.
HAZEL: Alex and I were the typical high school sweethearts in the past. He was the hot and loving boyfriend who always made sure that every girl was jealous of our relationship. I always felt it was too good to be true because I was more of a nerd back then. Too bad, my instincts were right. He was only with me so he could prove to his ex that he could get her jealous. I was shattered on the day I found out his motive. It was also around the time that I was supposed to get married to my ex-husband. I was devastated and it affected my marriage at first. We sat across the table, stealing glances at each other. I wondered what was going through his mind. He would occasionally smile and look somewhere else. He still looked hot, only that he was more mature and had an alluring beards. His face card never declined all these years. A waiter approached our table with two hot cups of chocolate. I had ordered it first because I thought the weather was getting cold and Alex ordered the same.
HAZEL: I continued staring at the rejection letter. I didn't know where to start thinking anymore. My thoughts were in chaos and my whole world was gradually crumbling. At this point, there was nothing that could fix it. My phone beeped again, distracting me from my thoughts. I didn't bother to check it and just switched off the phone. I needed to look for a job instead of wallowing in self-pity. I had a short bath, dressed up, and went out with my file neatly tucked in my handbag. This time, I wasn't going to apply online or look for a menial job. I was going to check a nice job and I manifested it in my mind. I locked the door, took in a deep breath, and put a smile on my face. I revisited the hotels I had been to earlier to check if there were any vacancies but as usual, none. I managed to speak to some managers, it turned out they wanted something in return. Something I couldn't give to them. I was so far from home just because I was searching for a nice job. HAZEL: Jennie and I walked through the gigantic doors, with her heels clicking stylishly against the shining marble floors. Yeah, I found out her name was Jennie and she was the former secretary and personal assistant to my new boss. According to her, she was getting married in two months, and her husband to be noted that he didn't like her job. I wondered how that was my business since I never asked her why she was quitting. "Good morning, Ms. J.," Smiles flashed from different corners as they welcomed her. She must be very popular at work. I wondered if the same people would like me since I was going to take over her job. Not that it's my fault or anything. People can be very funny. She took me to her office which had already been cleared out. "But fortunately, you won't be working here." She spilled and began walking away to another section of the floor. "Is there any reason why? It looks nice as spacious to me." I aired, trying to keep up with her. For quite a small lady like
HAZEL: Even though Jennie mentioned a lot of things, there were still some important details she skipped. Like, where to get coffee? I walked down to what looked like a general office with different people seated in cube-like spaces, all chattering amongst themselves. "Excuse me?" I interrupted. They all turned their heads to me at once. I swallow in nothing but air before continuing. "Where can I get coffee?" One of them pointed to a door that was just right behind me. I almost banged my forehead for being so stupid as not to pay attention to details. "Thank you," I smiled and turned my back to them. Their stare of scrutiny was something else, I felt like a little girl being scolded in the midst of adults. I was almost done brewing the coffee but it felt as though I was forgetting something. "Good morning there," I heard behind me. I tilted my head to the right to find someone already standing at the door. What was up with these people and not making a sound when opening th
HAZEL: "Alright, sir." I nodded. I watched dignitaries that I've seen only on TV walk into the conference room. Minutes later, it was filled up and a person stood on the stage, making sure to welcome every one of us. It happened to be that my boss was the highest shareholder in the College of Education. Julliard School was the most expensive, well and standardized-equipped school in the whole of California. It was Zayn's dream school and he once applied for the scholarship but he didn't get in. Although I was busy taking notes of what the speakers were saying, I felt eyes on me. But I didn't read too much meaning into it. As soon as the meeting came to an end, my boss stood up and walked away, alerting me that he'd be back shortly. He walked across the room to meet an older man who was about to leave. As I stood up and pushed the chair aside to turn, I bumped into a body. The shock I felt made me pull away from the person immediately. "I'm sorry for scaring you." The man said. "
AUTHOR'S POV: The morning sun caused Hazel to shift in her bed. She couldn't sleep all night because of the abdominal pains she felt. Opening her eyes, her eyes landed on her alarm clock. She found out it was past eight. "Oh my God!!" She yelled as she sprang out of bed. This caused intense pain in her lower abdomen but she didn't care. She was on the verge of losing her job just on her second day. "I seriously hate this period of my life." She cursed out loudly as she went about her morning routine. She had a quick bath and put on some clothes, not wanting to know if they matched or not. She didn't even know she was going to get to work. It was Jennie's car she entered on her first day. How the hell did she not think of that? "That's it. I'm f**ked!" She cussed again when we got out of the estate with no signs of a cab or taxi. It was almost nine o'clock and she hadn't gotten to work. She was sure Luca would shout at her. Just as she had already lost hope, a car pulled up in fr
HAZEL: Just as Michael had promised, he brought me a change of clothes. I was indeed grateful and got changed immediately. Luca was out of the office and so, I didn't get any funny looks. I heard the door opening and closing but didn't bother to look up. I pretended to be busy with some files but in reality, I was just staring at an empty screen. "Report." I heard him saying. I sighed and picked up a file I had gotten from other departments. I walked steadily to his table and dropped the file. I looked somewhere else while he went through the file. "This is utter rubbish!" He exclaimed and threw the file away, startling me in the process. The papers inside the file were scattered all over the office. "Why would you accept reports like this? Even if they're all dumb enough to send this, shouldn't you take a look at it before bringing it to me or are you dumb too?" He was indirectly insulting me but I wasn't going to give him a reaction. "I'm sorry, sir. It won't happen again." I
