Chapter Seven- Resignations

Lily Thompson

I was still trying to wrap my head around the fact that Ryan was my new colleague, and we were going to be staying together as I walked out of Denzol Corporation. If I had known earlier that this was going to happen, I wouldn’t have taken the job, but I had already signed the contract, so there was no going back. I wondered when Ryan even came back and when he even had a job.

I tried to look on the bright side. I finally had a well-paying job and I could now take care of Isabella’s fees and my rent. I really had to thank that lady at my workplace. She probably doesn’t know how much she has done for me.

I headed over to the house where I worked as a caretaker to a really old lady. I was hired by her granddaughter to take care of her. I had been working there for about three months. After bathing the old lady, dressing her up and helping her eat some food, I settled down to write my resignation letter.

Some minutes after her granddaughter arrived from work and settled down, I handed it to her. She looked up at me with a mixture of surprise and concern.

"Is everything alright, Lily?" she asked, her brow furrowing with worry as she read the contents of my letter.

Taking a deep breath, I tried to keep my voice steady. "I'm sorry, Tatt, but I need to resign from my position as the caretaker for your grandmother."

“Lily, why? Is something wrong? Are you unhappy here? Am I not paying you well? I can increase your pay if you want" Her concern was visible, and I felt a pang of guilt for causing her distress.

"No, no, it's not that," I hurriedly reassured her. "I appreciate everything you've done for me, truly. But there's been a change in my circumstances, and I need to focus on a new job opportunity."

Emily's expression softened. "I understand, Lily. You have to do what's best for you. But please know that you'll be missed here. You've been wonderful to Grandma, and we're grateful for all your care and dedication."

I smiled at her and was grateful for her understanding. “Thank you very much for everything, I’ll make sure to visit when I can”, I told her as I made my way to the front door.

She wrapped her hands around me in an embrace before I stepped out of the house.

‘One resignation done, one to go’ I said to myself. I stopped a cab and directed the driver to Isabella’s school. Within minutes, we arrived, and I told him to wait for a bit while I went down and hurried into the school, searching for her

She was standing right outside of her classroom. I spotted her easily because she was the only one there. I walked over to where she was, and she ran over to meet me immediately she sighted me.

“Mummy, you’re late. Again” she said before she hugged me.

“I’m so sorry, I had a lot of things to handle today. I promise I will be earlier tomorrow” I said,

“That’s what you said yesterday” she pouted and I smiled

“Let’s go outside, our cab is waiting for us” I said, intertwining our fingers together as she walked outside

We stepped into the cab and I told the driver to go. Isabella chattered all about her day to me on our way home and I just relaxed and listened to her, giving appropriate head nods and chipping in when I had to until we got back home.

I paid the driver, and we went into the house. Isabella went to her room to freshen up while I made dinner. We were low on foodstuffs, so I happily made a simple meal out of what we had at home, knowing that I had a job waiting for me and I would just look back at this day and smile

Isabella came out of her room, looking all nice and clean and she helped me with dinner. After dinner was ready, we sat at the dining table and dug in. She thanked me for the food, she was ever grateful for even the littlest things. I was so happy that I had her as my daughter.

We finished up the food and cleared up the plates and then Isabella unknowingly ruined my whole mood

“Mummy, what about Uncle Riri? Is he coming over today?” she asked, looking up at me innocently

My smile completely faded as she asked the question. It made me remember that I had to move in with Ryan tomorrow

“No, he is not coming over” I replied simply, and it was her face turned to a frown

“Why not?” she asked

As much as I hated to admit it, she would be seeing Ryan more because of my new job and there was nothing I could do about it. She looked like she was going to get sad because of Ryan and I couldn’t bear to see her sad, so I decided to tell her about my job

“You know what, you’ll see Uncle Riri tomorrow” I said and her lit up “in fact, we are going to be moving in with him”

“Yayyyy” she said, jumping around the whole house, and I couldn’t help but smile at how overjoyed she was, even though it wasn’t for the right reasons, according to me

I didn’t even give her the full details and she was so happy. After she calmed down, I helped her with her homework while she talked constantly about Ryan. If ears could bleed from words, mine would have formed a pint.

I struggled to smile while she talked about the man that abandoned us so many years ago without a valid reason. If only she knew

I wrote my resignation letter for all my other jobs that I had been handling to keep me and my daughter financially afloat and planned to hand them in tomorrow before i moved into the company's penthouse

We finally went to bed after she finished her homework. I tucked her in and kissed her forehead before heading to my room. I felt a mixture of anger and anticipation as I laid on my bed, anger because I had to move in with the one person I disliked and stay with him for a year and anticipation because I couldn’t wait to start my new job.

I decided to leave the next day’s problems for the next day. I would find a way tomorrow. With that, I drifted off to sleep
