The next morning arrived without mercy, I guess toke moved really fast when you hadn't slept at all

After finding the business card, sleep became secondary because we knew who Drm Callahan was, was going to be a huge lead.

So we spent the entire night at Ethan’s kitchen island, with a shut load of ccold coffee, our open laptops and half-torn sticky notes.

At this point the name Dr..Callahan wasn't a lead, it was an obsession. We searched medical directories, university alumni pages, old oncology conferences, and even dark places in the internet that I wouldn't never think of goung to

But a new click opened a new rabbit hole with each search result ending in a wall.

No hospital.

No city.

And no fucking clue.

Ethan sat on the counter at one point, head in his hands, while I stared blankly at the glowing screen. Neither of us said it aloud, but the truth was there, and that this was a lost cause. Whoever this doctor was, they didn’t want to be found.

“This is hopeless,” he said.

But I

After the call I sat down next to her, my heart racing as I stared at her, trying to make sense of what had just happened. Her voice was soft but trembled as she spoke. "When you and Ethan left the mansion yesterday… He took it out on me."This was my fault.I felt my throat tighten. A cold lump formed at the base of my chest, and I couldn’t breathe for a moment. I knew something wasn’t right, but hearing her say it out loud made it worse. I wanted to ask more, but I couldn’t. • My Date, My Boss, My Step-brother!   Chapter one: The Night That Should Have Been Mine

Prom was supposed to be the highlight of every girl’s existence, a night of slow dances, whispered confessions of love, and promises that felt like forever and true. The night where everything came together perfectly, from the dress, the music, the love and ending the night with a cliche kiss. For me, it was the night I realized I had no one. The entrance to Lumière was pure luxury, I could see couples through the glass doors, leaning into each other, sharing laughter over plates of steaming pasta, the rich scent of roasted garlic and butter lingering in the air. The restaurant better be worth it because it took weeks to get a reservation here. I was second guessing entering but my fingers curled tighter around the edges of my dress for some sort of moral support. The red fabric clung to my skin, the deep V showing more than I was comfortable with. I never wore red. It was loud, bold, attention seeking. But I had worn it tonight because Alex once said it was his favorite color. I

I wasn’t going to waste my dress. I looked too damn good to cry alone in my crummy little apartment. So I took the unopened bottle of wine from the restaurant and found myself in a run-down bar, the kind of place where people drank to forget how life gave them the middle finger. And I needed to forget. The bartender eyed me like I had lost my mind when I set the bottle on the counter. “Can you open this for me?” I asked. He let out a short, unimpressed laugh. “Are you serious?” I nodded. He sighed, shaking his head. “Lady, this is a bar. We sell drinks here. You can’t just bring your own and expect service.” Embarrassment burned my skin. I hadn’t thought about that. “I—” “Put it on my tab.” The voice was smooth, deep, effortless. A quiet command that sent a shiver down my spine. I turned. Piercing gray eyes met mine, steady and unreadable. Damn! I was a sucker for coloured eyes. He smirked. I almost forgot I was meant to be heartbroken, I couldn't blame myse

The moment I stepped into his apartment, I knew I had entered a different world, this man was living in extreme luxury, it was in complete contrast to the bar where I had met him. Everything screamed of wealth. The marble, polished to perfection. Floor-to-ceiling windows framed a stunning view of the city skyline And the furniture was sleek, and obviously expensive, it looked like it had been lifted straight from the pages of a luxury magazine. Even the air smelled rich. New leather. Polished wood. And of course his intoxicating smell. That scent was masculine, dark, and addictive. I knew I was gawking. Who the hell was this man? From his tailored suit to his effortless confidence, everything about him oozes power. This wasn’t the type of man who belonged in a rundown bar. I barely had time to process before the door clicked shut behind me, the electricity between us only tripled, it was so thick and suffocating that I had to remind myself to breathe. He loosened the collar of

The first few days were unbearable. I woke up each morning with an unbearable pain in my chest, I would instinctively reaching for my phone only to find nothing. No missed calls, no apologies, not even a half-hearted excuse from Alex or Lily. It was like I had ceased to exist. At first, I told myself they needed time. Maybe they felt guilty. Maybe they would realize what they had done and try to fix it. But as the hours stretched into days, the truth became painfully clear. They weren’t coming back. They had erased me as easily as deleting a message. And I was done waiting. On the fourth morning, I blocked them both. No hesitation. No dramatic farewell text. Just a simple tap of my finger, cutting them out like they should have never been there in the first place. It wasn’t instant relief, but it was a start. I threw myself into anything to keep my mind from going back to them. My late nights weren’t for crying anymore; they were for prepping interview answers, reading articles o

It was obvious he was the one in control and it was not just the freaking interview. He looked different here than in the club. More uptight. More controlled. Gone was the teasing man who had flirted with me over drinks. Now, he was the man who owned every soul in this building. Including mine. I should have asked him what he did for a living. My gut had warned me, but no, I was too busy being interested in having sex him. And the worst part? I didn’t even do that! Ethan leaned back in his chair, his fingers folded in together, his piercing gaze dragging over me slowly, very focused and full of fucking intent. His suit was darker, crisp, his tie perfectly knotted, and that damn smirk the same one that had haunted me since that night never wavered. “Miss Carter,” one of the interviewers spoke, but I barely heard them over the pounding of my own heartbeat. “Let’s begin.” Ethan moved his fingers, nodding for them to proceed, but his eyes never left mine. The electricity between us

As I stepped out of the interview office, I spotted Lily approaching. Her eyes lit up with mischief and as if she was about to speak, but I didn’t slow down. I I had no patience for whatever she wanted to say. Without acknowledging her, I turned in the opposite direction, quickening my steps until I was outside. The moment I stepped out of the office, my phone rang again. Mom. I clenched my jaw, torn between ignoring it and knowing she wouldn’t stop until I picked up. With an exhausted sigh, I swiped to answer. After this call, I can finally have her out of my life… again, until she needs something and calls. “Finally,” her voice chirped, too sweet, too fake. “I was starting to think you would never pick up, sweetheart.” I rolled my eyes, already regretting my decision. “What do you want?” “Oh, Sophia, don’t be so cold. I have wonderful news! I’m getting married.” I stopped walking. Married? Again? I had lost count of how many times my mother had gotten married. Since my fath

I heard the words, but my brain refused to process them. Ethan. My stepbrother. No. Fucking. Way. The restaurant spun around me, my mother's voice fading into the background. My legs refused to move, but finally, I forced them forward. As soon as I reached the table, she looped her arm around mine, her grip too tight, too controlling. "Everyone, this is my daughter, Sophia." I barely had time to register the older man sitting beside her before she gestured toward him with a manicured hand. "This is Robert Blackwood, my fiancé." "And this is his son, Ethan. But I’m sure you already know that." I didn’t miss her wink. Then she gestured toward a girl sitting beside Ethan. "And this is Rachel, his daughter." Rachel looked just like her father, but I barely spared her a glance. Because my attention was locked on Ethan. His smirk was slow, knowing. “Looks like we’re family now, little sister.” Rachel smiled warmly, completely unaware of the earth-shattering bomb that had just b

Rachel ran forward screaming in a high pitched voice I didn't know she had. “Daddy? Daddy, are you okay? I heard glass break, what did Ethan do?” I blinked. What! The! Actual! Fuck! The way she rushed to him, like a little girl desperate to protect her hero, had my breath catching in my throat. She didn’t even glance at Ethan, she just went straight to Richard like he was the one who had been hurt when he might have been the one to shatter the glass. When did all this happen? When did Rachel start calling him Daddy with such tenderness? When did the girl who once side-eyed his every move become this… concerned? I barely had time to process it before Ethan spoke. “What I did?” he said, his tone flat. “You mean existed?” Rachel’s body stiffened. Her hand, which had just touched Richard’s shoulder, dropped like it had been scorched. She turned to look at Ethan, but the words she had died on her lips. Maybe it was the look in his eyes. I stood there, in the middle of this st

I took.l one last look at Sophie as I followed my father, he didn't say a word but it was obvious that knew what was coming; he had to. I strode down the hallway, my footsteps heavy on the floor but my father's pace was steady, but I could sense the tension building between us as I trailed behind him. My eyes fixed on the back of his head as so many thoughts ran through my head, He didn't look back, didn't acknowledge my presence. I continued to follow him as we went past the portraits of a family that barely existed, past the polished antiques that felt more like props than memories. He stepped into his office like a king returning to his throne. I had to admit that his office does look with a throne with the hgh ceilings, heavy mahogany desk, lather and gold and of course it reeked of his ego that soaked into the fucking walls. But now I know that none of this belongs to him, except his ego He didn’t look back when I entered, he just walked straight to the far end of the ro

Rachel's condescending voice cut me short. “Sophia, will you let my father talk to my brother or not?” I couldn't help but roll my eyes while Ethan had his usual unreadable expression, he looked regal and detached, like he had practiced that mask in front of a mirror. But I knew him too well, I know how much work it took him to keep everything in control, I couldn't see that there was a twitch at the corner of his mouth, I noticed the way he was tightening his jaw and I could sense that he was anything but calm.Mr Blackwood just cleared his throat as his eyes went straight to me. “Come with me Ethan,” his tone was flat and commanding, as he was leaving no room for argument. Everyone was silent looking between Ethan and I waiting to see what would happen.Ethan walked towards me with a silent plea in his eyes.“Please, Sophie. Just this once… stay out of it.”His words hurt, but I gave him a look that told him that I wasn't comfortable with him being alone with his father, for all

  • My Date, My Boss, My Step-brother!   Chapter 102: Don't let him know

Sophie's POVThe silence in the car was thick and extremely suffocating. Ethan hadn’t said a word since the call, and I could see it in the way his jaw clenched, the way his eyes showed that he was close to being wild with rage or just that he was very angry. And what Lorna said today only fueled his temper ten thousand times over.“He is looking,” Ethan said in a very low voice as his eyes were distant now, he looked like he was already five steps ahead of his father. “The fucker suspects, I can feel it, you know when I went to my mother's room he was watching and that was the first time in yeats that he went to her wing in the mansion, then now he went in the room it feels sketchy."I nodded in agreement."When I left the mansion today he gave me a chilling look that didn't quite sit right with me.”I listened without saying a word, just nodding my head so Ethan would know that I was picking up every single word he was saying, but he wasn't don't talking.“I don’t know how much he

Lorna’s eyes shifted to him slowly, and the sorrow etched into her face made my chest tighten. She looked like someone who’d lived with the truth for too long, and it had started to rot inside her.“He isolated her,” Lorna said. “At first, it was subtle. He convinced her not to go to her usual doctor. Said he knew someone more experienced, someone who ‘specialized in stress-related issues.’ She was hesitant, but he insisted. Claimed it was best for the baby.” She turned to Ethan “Best for you.”She turned to me then, her voice sharper and deadly bitter. “But that doctor… he was a joke. No credentials we could ever confirm. Always gave vague results, told her the tests were fine even when she could barely walk without holding onto something. I told her it wasn’t right. Told her to get a second opinion. But Robert didn’t let her.”Ethan’s jaw clenched. I could see it working as he gritted his teeth.“He told her she was imagining things. That she was paranoid. That stress was making her

I could tell she was already getting emotional as I watched her lips tremble as she finally drew in a shaky breath.Ethan hands resting on the steering wheel even though we weren’t going anywhere, be looked very agitated as if he knew he wasn't going to like what he was about to hear.“Lorna please.” I begged. “I know this is hard for you but Ethan needs answers.”She nodded her head and sighed.“She met him in school… your mother. God, she was brilliant. Soft-spoken but sharp. She could silence a room with just one look.” She was looking at Ethan with a sparkle in her eyes as if she was seeing his mother in him.Ethan didn’t move, but I could feel him getting agitated. I turned slightly in my seat, I turned my body to face her as Lorna spoke.“Your father was a scholarship student, an orphan but was deadly smart, your grandfather sponsored him and your mother took i

God knows I did. But the day he walked into my room with the bottle, asking why it had Daddy’s name on it, I knew I was losing grip. Ethan was only six and he already understood too much I guess children are too observant, and maybe he inherited more than just his father’s eyes.”Everything blurred, the diary slipped from my hands and landed with a thud.Sophie bent to pick it up, but I stepped back.“No.”“Ethan—”“I need to think.”I moved toward the window, pressing my palm to the glass, my forehead against it. “I don’t remember any bottle,” I whispered. “But I remember her c
