Cora pushed the door of her bedroom open with her shoulder. Her daughter's choice of clothes for the day in one hand, shoes in the other and a piece of toast stuck in her mouth. She entered and saw that Isabella her six years old daughter whom she stopped earlier from playing dress-up inside her walk-in closet has now found other activities of singing and jumping on the bed to occupy herself with
Cora saw one of the beddings that were neatly laid before she left Isabella by herself was now scrunched up all around her feet, while the rest and all the pillows were strewn on the floor. She sighed deeply, draped the clothes in her hand on a chair and the shoes, she placed at the foot of it before removing the toast stuck in her mouth so she would be able to talk.
However before she could say anything, Isabella turned and became aware of her mother's presence.
"Mommy see how high I can jump!" She paused her song to say excitedly and immediately resumed singing, her neatly braided blond pigtails flying in the air as she jumped.
"Five little monkeys jumping on the bed
One fell off and bumped his head
Mama called the doctor and the doctor said
No more monkeys jumping on the bed!" She sang on.
"Yay! That's pretty high honey, now quit jumping like a monkey and come get dressed for school, while I have a quick shower. We're running late as it is!" Cora replied with lackluster.
She arrived home yesterday feeling on top of the world. The new branch of Sweet & savory that she came to New York to open was progressing smoothly, all foreseen problem that she thought she might encounter was easily dealt with without any glitch. Life was great and she was happy.
She relaxed in her favorite chair with a flute of champagne in hand hoping to enjoy the rest of her evening before finally retiring to bed but her hopes were dashed when a piece of news she saw on the entertainment news channel threatened to bring to a premature end all her hard work for the past four months
"We're always running late mom" Isabella replied her mother with a shrug and a toothy grin, interrupting her mother's train of thoughts without stopping what she was doing
Her daughter was right. They were always running late. Even though Cora found her stay in New York enjoyable, she was still not used to being a single mom without her parents who had always helped with Isabella. If not for her cousin and best friend Lisa who has been helping her to settle down in the city, Cora had no idea how she would have coped
She looked at her daughter who was enjoying herself with no care in the world, oblivious to what was going through her mother's mind. She decided to let her continue with her playing, they would get dressed together when she was done with her shower
Cora walked towards her walk-in closet to pick out the clothes she would be wearing for the day. She opened the door and nearly had a cardiac arrest when she beholds the mess her daughter made on the floor.
Shoes, bags, and some of her clothes that were organized by category and color, similar to the way clothing items are displayed in boutiques were now scattered all over the floor. Her makeup bag was overturned on top of the white evening gown that she planned on wearing at her branch grand opening.
'Aaghhh! I thought I told her not to play dress-up with my stuff?' Cora groaned and thought to herself in frustration. How could she wreak havoc so fast? It's just been five minutes since I left her by herself! First the bed, now in here!? My poor dress!' She painfully thought looking towards where Isabella was still happily jumping.
If they were back home in Spain, she could just imagine what her mother would say to this...
'Leave the poor child alone Cora, she's just being her age. You were much worse than this when you were her age. I could remember this one time when...'
And she would go on and on, telling Isabella whatever prank her mother pulled when she was about the same age as her. Isabella would be cracked up in laughter while her grandmother would take it upon herself to clean whatever mess she might have created at that particular time.
She missed her parents and Isabella who was always asking when grandma and grandpa would come to visit obviously missed them too.
Her parents might have spoilt her daughter a little bit but Cora knew they were very good with her. If it wasn't for their help she didn't know how an eighteen-year-old teenager would have made it through college and culinary school, not to talk of growing her father's small bakery business to the point where they are now opening a branch in New York City.
Cora sighed and massage her temple where she could feel the beginning of a headache. She loved her daughter so much but it's high time she let her understand that there's a difference between playing and making a mess for mommy to clean up. Coping without her parents' help is hard and Cora is yet to get used to life without them.
"Isabella come here for a moment, mommy needs to have a word with you," Cora said towards her daughter firmly
"Uh-oh..." Isabella said and immediately stopped her jumping. Her shoulder dropped and her wide smiling lips immediately turned downward like she was sad about something. Without taking her eyes off her mother's face, she sat with a plop before dragging on her bottom to the edge of the bed, taking the rest of the beddings that was not already thrown on the floor along with herself
"Am I in trouble?" She asked in a small voice, taking small steps towards her mother with a pitiful look on her face.
"What? No baby, you're not!" Cora exclaimed with surprise. "Why do you ask that?" She asked and immediately bend on one knee so she would be able to look into her daughter's eyes. Did she raise her voice too high when she spoke? Did she speak in a way that scared her? Cora wondered to herself when she saw her that her daughter's happy countenance had now turned sad.
"Because you called me Isabella!" Isabella answered without meeting her mother's eyes
"Yes honey, I called you Isabella cos it's your name. Do you now have a problem with the name?"
Isabella shook her head vigorously in reply. "I just love it more when you call me Isa. You only say Isabella when you're not pleased with me"
"Oh!" Was the only word Cora could manage to utter in surprise. She wanted to knock herself in the head when she saw her daughter's reactions towards her. It was just four months without the help of her parents and she already felt like the worst mother in the world.
She pulled Isabella into a tight hug before she properly explain herself
"Isa, honey... I'm sorry if I made you feel that way but I assure you that was not my intention. I love calling you Isa as much as I love calling you Isabella, see... It doesn't sound any different to me. I just wanted to discuss with you, you're not in any kind of trouble" She said and Isabella nodded, her happy smile returned to her face in a flash
—
Five minutes after their mother and child discussion where she made her daughter understand how happy she would be if she didn't play in mommy's closet. Cora went to the bathroom for a quick shower leaving Isabella to dress by herself. When she was done showering, she selected a sophisticated and yet casual-chic style of clothing, skin-tight ripped jeans, a white cotton shirt with a black pump, and a tote leather bag.
The day was going to be a busy one for her with so many appointments to keep, with the plumber, electrician, and interior decorator before shopping for baking and kitchen wares. But first, she needed to speak with her cousin, she needed advice fast on what to do concerning the bad news she saw In the entertainment news.
Twenty minutes later. Cora drove out of her Manhattan townhouse. She would first drop Isabella at school before going to pick Lisa up at her house. She briefly looked towards her daughter who had her face pressed to the window looking at the passing scenery"Isa..." She calls softly and Isabella turned her head looking at her mom, waiting with a smile to know what her mother wanted to say. Cora just smiled back and pat her lovingly on the head. What she was about to say was at the moments forgotten when she saw the joy that radiated from her daughter's bright smile.Even though there are days that she felt like running away when the pressure of motherhood, coupled with taking care of the family business becomes too much for her to shoulder, Cora was still glad and proud of her eighteen years old self that decided to keep her child, even when her boyfriend had just ended their relationship and the pressure from friends to get an abortion was
Cora leaned back in her seat with her eyes closed and thought more about the question Lisa asked her earlier; Was she still pining for Zachary King... She vehemently disagree then and thinking about it now she still disagreed. How could she still have feelings for a man that made a mockery of her love for him? A man that shamed her in front of her family and friends. No, she didn't have any feelings left for Zach King, instead, she hated him with passion.Even with the hatred Cora felt for Zach King, she still couldn't entirely forget about him, how would she be able to forget when her daughter was a constant reminder of her father with her blond hair, green eyes, and dimples. The only difference was Zach's aloofness while Isabella was as vivacious as her mother.Cora couldn't help it when her mind drifted off to the first time she set her eyes on Zach. Even after seven years of harboring hatr
Zach King's alarm sounded at 6 am as usual. He sat up in bed and looked around his bedroom.'She's not here today?" He thought to himself, amazed to see that Samantha, his six-year-old daughter was not in his room waiting for him to wake up as usual. 'Maybe she finally decided to stop watching over me.' He thought to himself and smiledSix months ago after her mom was finally moved to the hospital before her death, Zach would wake up to find Samantha staring down at him in bed. After three days of waking up to find her watching over him, he asked her if she was afraid of sleeping alone and she replied, no! She was just afraid the men that came to take her mother away would also come for him while she was sleeping.Zach felt pain for his daughter. He wished there was something to save his wife's life. If not for anything but his daughter's sake. There was nothing they could do as the terminal cancer that she had was already at its final stage. The
Cora and Lisa forgot about Zachary King in the meantime and went about the day's business. After her meetings, she visited her new branch building to check the work in progress. When she entered and saw how far they've gone with what used to be an old abandoned warehouse, She was proud of what they have achieved so far. The work on the building was almost done. Hopefully, they might be able to open for business by the end of the month. It was getting late in the afternoon when the two women finally decided to take a break and go for lunch, after which they can go shop for the baking and kitchen wares she would be using for her business. While shopping for the kitchen wares, Cora decided to call the babysitter so she could speak with Isabella. She knew they would be at the park right now and she wanted to be sure Isabella was having a great time at the park. However, she couldn't get the babysitter on the phone. So Cora left a message on her answering
"No Lisa, you don't have to follow me. You should stay here, in case they find a match for her, so you can immediately inform me!""Okay, but do you know where you're going? Do you have the address?" Lisa asked with concern towards the obviously disoriented Cora who was walking in hurried steps.Cora stopped mid strides when she remembered she had no idea where she was going. She sighed in frustration and looked pitifully at Lisa ``No I don't know where I'm going... You have it right?"Lisa nodded and gave Cora a quick, reassuring hug. "Everything will be okay, Corazon! Everything will be okay, so don't worry too much!" She pulled away from their hug and looked into Cora's eyes "Alright?" She asked and Cora nodded in reply"Okay go ahead, I'll send the address to your phone by the time you arrive at your car... Oh, the car keys!" She remembered she still had the keys and handed it o
Zach turned white on seeing the picture Cora placed in front of him. For some seconds, he just stares at the face of the girl that looks so much like Samantha they could pass for twins. If not for Cora and her father that were standing behind the girl in the picture, he would have thought Cora somehow stole one of Samantha's pictures so she could play some stupid pranks on him. With slightly shaky fingers he picked the photo up and looked at the girl closely. Even with the ridiculously big chef's hat she had on her head, her long blond hair was obvious as it cascaded over her shoulders, and her green eyes that were just like his and Samantha's were sparkling with happiness."Samantha!?" Zach heard his father whisper in question exactly what he was thinking. Indeed, he didn't need a DNA test to confirm to him that the girl in the picture was his daughter. The resemblance between them was so obvious even his father mistook her for
So hope you won't mind if I come by the hospital later today to check how Isabella's doing?" Ryan asked as he helped Cora climb into the helicopter."No of course not" Cora replied"Great, so I guess I'll see you later then. Take care." Ryan said and immediately started walking back towards Zach, meeting him halfway and they both walked back to the helicopter again."Her name is Isabella... I already sent some of her pictures that I copied from Corazon to your phone..."Yeah, thanks, man..." Zach repliedIt's too early for old man Mancini to find out anything about them for now, so don't think about the old fart, just concentrate on taking care of your girl.""Yeah... Please help take Samantha to your mom's... I'll call her tonight myself""Yeah sure," Ryan said as they arrived at the helicopter.
After their visiting time ended, the babysitter, Ana soon left for her house when Cora insisted she go home and take care of her own family. After she left, Cora and Lisa sat in the waiting area in front of the emergency room with their fingers intertwined, praying in their hearts and at the same time giving each other much-needed strength and support. Some minutes after, Zach arrived with Isabella's two doctors and some nurses. Cora immediately stood from her chair and ran to meet them halfway, closely followed by Lisa"Hi Zach" Lisa greeted and Zach gave her a curt nod in answer"Hey, how was the test? Is everything going to be okay?" Cora asked Zach. Even though she wasn't expecting him to answer her since he has been giving her hateful glares ever since they arrived at the hospital, she was surprised he answered."They will start the procedure as soon as they get her settled in a private an
Now, why would he buy her panties and bra for goodness's sake as if they were still dating? What would Luis say if he found out her ex-boyfriend who was also the father of her child bought her panties and bra, even under such circumstances? And why was he even acting like it was no big deal? As if men buying their ex-girlfriends panties and bras happens all the time! How did he even know her size? Yes, he bought those things for her in the past when they were dating. But how could he tell that her size has not increased because of childbirth?Cora knew Zach that he was not a man of many words who also didn't beat around the bush. Even at that, she still thinks something must be wrong with his brain when he told her..."Oh, and I took the liberty of getting you another set of underwear too. I thought you might want a fresh one for the night'Like what the hell Zach! Are you totally out of your mind!?' she thought to herself and managed to reply to him casually ''Yeah sure, thanks!''S
Isabella was excitedly telling her mother about her stuffed unicorn when Zach cleared his throat loudly making mother and child to look up from the unicorn they were both checking out and toward himZach raised an eyebrow at Isabella in question then. It seemed to Cora that the two of them had earlier discussed something while she was on the phone with Luis. She alternatingly looked from Zach to Isabella wondering what it was they both knew that she didn't know.Isabella also stared back at her dad for some seconds in confusion..."Ohh..." She suddenly said in realization when she remembered what it was her father was trying to tell her.Her face became sad and she turned to her mother with a very sorry expression on her face"I'm sorry mommy for my behavior earlier... Throwing tan- tan?- tan?-tarium?..." She sounded unsure while looking towards her dad for help since she had forgotten the actual word her dad used when he told her with his daddy's voice that she owed her mother an apo
Even though Zach didn't understand why the thought of Cora having a man was like a bitter pill in his mouth, he still told himself she has the right to have a man in her life. She has the right to fall in love, get married to the man she loves and give birth to Isabella's sister or brother. He agreed with himself that she has the right to be happy and if that is what would make her happy then so be it. After all it was not her fault they broke up, it's his and his family's fault He already made up his mind to spend the night with Cora and Isabella at the hospital so when he was done thinking about Cora and her boyfriend, he went to the mall to get some things they would be needing, everything he felt the three of them would need to have a comfortable night, he boughtAfter he was done shopping for the basic things, he went to the toy store and bought a stuffed unicorn toy exactly like the one Samantha couldn't sleep without at home. The only difference being Samantha's unicorn was p
'Corazon has a man in her life!?' There was a dreadful feeling inside Zach's heart as he asked himself that question over and over again. He became restless and immediately started pacing within the small space where his car was parked. After a while, he stopped pacing, closed his eyes, and pinched the bridge of his nose. A habit he knew always calmed him down whenever he was overwhelmed by any information he couldn't process. He's been pacing back and forth for the past ten minutes and he couldn't understand why. Why there's a hollow feeling deep inside his stomach. Why his thoughts were all jumbled up and Why the thoughts of Cora having a man in her life was such a big deal to him!"Dammit!" He suddenly swore out loud, startling awake a sick, cranky baby that the mother just managed to coax to sleep. The baby's cry rends through the parking lot also startling Zach out of his deep thoughts. He looked towards where the baby's cry was coming from and met head-on with the mother's death
Ryan Sheldon's parents were more of a parent to Zach than his own parents. When he was a kid, he spent more time with Ryan's mom who was more of a mother to him than his own mother. His mother would drop him and his sister off at the Sheldon's place and lie she had somewhere important she ought to be when they all know her definition of important was shopping and partying After Ryan left for his own house. Zach called Ryan's mom, Kelly, who Samantha was spending the night with. They spoke for a while about general things before Zach briefed her about Cora and Isabella. When they were done talking, the phone was passed over to Samantha."Daddy guess what?..." Samantha said excitedly as soon as the phone was given to her. She didn't wait for her father to answer before she went ahead to say what she wanted to say anyway"I'm baking your favorite chocolate cake!""Oh really?'' Zach as
Zach chuckled at Isabella's words and eagerness."Honey, let's concentrate on one thing at a time. How about we concentrate on getting better first before we talk about living together. How about that?" He asked and Isabella nodded happily in agreement"Great! Now why don't we call him right now and find out if you're much better." Zach said and reached out to press the bell beside Isabella's bed."Doctor, tell my dad I'm better now so he can take me on a ride in his helicopter" Isabella said as soon as the doctor walked in through the door."Wow, okay Missy." The doctor laughed. "Let's give you a check up then to find out how strong you are" The doctor checked her vital signs and saw everything was okay. She wasn't showing any adverse reactions."Actually dad, princess Isabella is perfectly okay" The doctor said to Zach. "The transfusion will be completed in an hour's time then we'll watch her for another twenty-four hours after which sh
"Yes exactly, I wasn't to blame," Cora repeated Lisa's words to herself"That wasn't even why I didn't tell him at first. After he broke up with me, I couldn't think straight. I was perplexed. I don't care about anything. I just wanted to climb into some hole, roll into a ball and die, you know.It took me a while before I could think about the life growing in me that I needed to take care. By then it wasn't necessary anymore. I mean his girlfriend was pregnant with him. Doesn't that mean the one I was carrying belonged to me?...""Yes Cora, I agreed with you hundred percent""Then why was he making it seem as if I did something bad to him?... How could he be that selfish, to only think about himself and not others? What kind of a man is that?"Everybody is entitled to their own opinion and how they choose to see somethings""Yes! Then why must he
