The confidence Ashleigh had when she ordered Mr. Atkinson to get the driver fizzled as the Tixton building loomed ahead. Her palms were clammy, and her heart pounded unreasonably fast.

What exactly was she doing? What was she going to say? She had no plan.....only a widening pit in her stomach and a need to see Adrian that wouldn’t stop growing no matter how she tried to crush it.

One more mistake and she’d look desperate.

She grimaced in the back seat, chewing her bottom lip before pulling out her phone in a panic.

Ashleigh: HELP, I’m panicking!! He wasn’t home, so I’m going to his office. I think I’ve lost my mind.

She stared at the screen like her life depended on it, tapping her fingers against her thigh until Arthur's three dots appeared.

Arthur: OMG girl😯! Didn’t know you had it in you to make a move so fast.... proud of you😉

Ashleigh: Not a move. A disaster in motion. What do I even say to him? I’m shaking😭😭

Arthur: First off, breathe. Second... isn’t it still the weekend?

“Hey, dream girl! Your break is over. Time to get back to work.” Ashleigh jolted awake at the sound of a loud voice cutting through the small break room. She groaned, rubbing her tired eyes as the realization set in—her short nap was over, and the next time she’d get real sleep would be late at night, at home. With a sigh, she stood up, wiping the light sheen of sweat off her forehead. Digging into her bag on the couch, she retrieved a comb, pulled off the sanitary hairnet, and quickly ran the comb through her hair before securing it into a tight bun. Grabbing a fresh hairnet from a nearby box, she slipped it on and checked her reflection in the mirror. Satisfied with her neat, light green uniform, she headed out to face the person who had woken her. At the front desk, a middle-aged woman with a stern expression awaited her. “Miss Ashleigh Hartman, once again, you’ve overslept,” Mrs. Smith said, giving her a disapproving look. Ashleigh rushed forward, grabbing her hands. “Ma’am,

Tyra’s grip loosened, the baseball bat clattering to the concrete floor. The lenses of her cronies’ phones swiveled, their recording abruptly halted as a group of men and women filled the doorway. The air in the supply room seemed to thicken. The man at the forefront moved with a quiet authority that amplified the silence. Each measured step echoed, the sound bouncing off the stacked shelves. A palpable chill radiated from him, a subtle tension that made Tyra and her friends instinctively recoil. He stopped before them, his height and broad shoulders casting a shadow. The tailored suit strained slightly across his powerful frame. His face, sharply defined and undeniably handsome, held an expression of glacial displeasure as his gaze fixed on Tyra. "Damn," she thought, a flicker of unwanted attraction momentarily eclipsing her fear. "Who is this?" Her internal distraction was short-lived. He moved past them, his attention now on Ashleigh, bound and slumped against a stack of boxes.

Adrian Cagliari stood at the apex of the technology industry at 27. He had a keen eye for innovation, setting himself apart from the family business to build his dream company, Tixton, from the ground up. Tixton was now one of Cagliari's major successes, and he was a rising force. Building and maintaining his family's legacy required a firm hand, making him rather firm and disciplined. He oversaw all matters in Italy and America, as well as other branches worldwide. Domineering, assertive, and principled, he ensured a palpable tension among those who worked with him. It was both a burden and a benefit. As he discussed with the investors, his secretary and his personal assistant were outside, mentally preparing to interrupt the meeting. Turner then walked into the spacious office, a phone in his hand. Pausing his call, Adrian raised his eyes to his secretary, who felt a chill run down his spine. "I thought I was clear with my instructions," Adrian bit out, his gaze making Mr. Turner

"Adrian, if it's okay, I'd like to have dinner with you sometime next week. Your mom told me you're around for the week," Caelia proposed, her eyes holding a hint of eagerness. "Yes, Adrian, I feel you two should have lunch and catch up. It's been a while," Caelia's mother added, glancing at Eleanor for support. Adrian glanced at his mother, who offered a subtle nod of agreement. His gaze then shifted to his uncle, who maintained a neutral expression. "I apologize, Caelia, but I won't be able to join you for lunch. I have a lot of matters to handle this week," Adrian said curtly. Caelia's face flushed with embarrassment, and she bit her lip. "I'll ask my secretary to arrange an appointment for you. Just let him know where you’d like to go," he added, signaling his secretary forward. Caelia looked as if she wanted to refuse, but Adrian gave no room for discussion. He stood up, effectively ending the conversation. Eleanor placed a comforting hand on Caelia's back, offering an encou

She wondered why Mr. Cagliari wanted to see her. Mr. Turner pressed the button to open the private elevator. "Are you sure? I can take the stairs," she suggested, but he stood firm. As they made their way up, her mind ran in circles, trying to understand why the CEO wanted to see her. She hadn't received any complaints so far and saw no reason for him to want to see her. She would only know once she arrived. Once again, she found herself on the fourth floor of the company, the executive floor. This was the floor housing the offices of the president and the vice president, although she had never met the latter. They walked past the conference room to the end of the hall where a gold plaque on a door read: CEO. "You may go in," Turner gestured, opening the door for her. She stepped inside. The space was vast, furnished exquisitely with Italian pieces. She hadn't imagined a room could be so expansive. Her eyes roamed the opulent space before landing on a seating arrangement near a l

Ashleigh's defiance burned in her eyes as she met his gaze. "Whatever I want to know about my parents, I can find out myself." He chuckled, a low, knowing sound. "My dear…" He reached out, running his fingers through her hair, toying with a lock before letting it slip through his fingers. "Be my guest. Try all you want. But understand this—your search will be over before it even begins. Your Aunt Smith knows this well. Your case is far from simple." His amusement contrasted starkly with the warning laced in his voice. Her fiery gaze tugged at something deep within him, he liked this little act of defiance, even as he saw the fear beneath her bravado. "I am the only one who can guarantee your safety. You can only walk naively through this world for so long, Ashleigh, but they are out there, lurking in the shadows, waiting. The moment you step out of your shell, your head will be in your hands. But don’t take my word for it—find out for yourself how long you can survive." He waved d

Ashleigh!” The shriek jolted Ashleigh out of her seat. Heart hammering, she turned to see James doubled over, laughing his head off. She swatted him repeatedly, trying to steady her breathing. “You idiot! You scared me half to death!” “Okay, okay! I’m sorry!” he wheezed between chuckles, raising his hands in surrender when her hits grew stronger. Finally, when she relented, he plopped into the chair she had just dusted. “You disappeared after that call from the secretary, so I came looking for you.” Ashleigh sighed, resuming her task of wiping down the desk with a damp rag. “Sorry, James. I just have a lot on my mind right now.” “Why? What was the meeting about?” He leaned forward, eyes glinting with curiosity. “You left with that hot secretary and didn’t give us the tea after!” Ashleigh stilled, then spun to face him. “Wait… James!” she exclaimed, narrowing her eyes. James scratched the back of his head sheepishly. “What? He looks fine, but he always seems out of it whenever

The next day at a private law firm, Adrian Cagliari stood in a private lounge provided to him by his lawyer. The room was moderately sized and tastefully furnished. A floor-to-ceiling window stretched across one wall, offering a clear view of the entrance gate. From his vantage point, Adrian could see who was arriving and leaving, yet the tinted glass ensured no one outside could see in. Dressed in a sharp blue suit paired with a black shirt, his hair slicked back with gel, Adrian exuded an intimidating aura. He stood by the window, sipping his coffee slowly, his eyes fixed on the activity below. "Boss, I just spoke with the driver you sent. He said Miss Ashleigh refused the ride and insisted on making her own way here," Turner reported. Adrian glanced at his watch and frowned. She was already an hour late. Punctuality was one of Adrian’s strictest principles. In his world, everything had its time, and deviations led to inefficiency. He despised lateness, viewing it as a waste of

After Fiona and James left, Ashleigh had spent the whole Saturday devising possible ways to get Adrian’s attention. But each suggestion only made her realize how unmatched she was against a woman like Caelia. Though Arthur left her that evening with words of encouragement her heart remained heavy…. and her aunt took notice. The next morning, Mrs. Smith insisted on driving Ashleigh home herself, sending the driver back to his quarters for extra rest. Ashleigh was surprised to learn her aunt could drive but agreed anyway. Whilst Mrs. Smith maneuvered the car with ease, Ashleigh remained glued to her phone, glaring at a particular message— or rather, the lack of a response from Adrian.“He really knows how to make me feel shitty, doesn’t he?” she muttered as she saw her message marked as read.“What’s the matter, dream girl? Why so angry at your phone?” Mrs. Smith's voice broke through her thoughts. She glanced at Ashleigh before returning her focus to the road.Ashleigh quickly shoved

The drive back to the Cagliari mansion was silent, but Adrian’s mind was anything but that.Megan’s words echoed in his mind, chipping at his indifference. Now, he fully understood how isolated Ashleigh had been at Robin College. Megan’s confession about her indifference stung, but he held back his anger— out of respect for Alexander, yes, but also because he knew that the main fault was with him. Ashleigh won’t be so affected by Megan’s treatment if he had been by her side. The realization gnawed at him. The car pulled into the driveway and he stepped out with purposeful strides. Mr Atkinson approached him with a slight bow, and he nodded in acknowledgement.“Welcome home sir. Any instructions for this evening? Will you be having dinner?”Adrian shook his head, replying curtly. “I won’t be having dinner tonight. I don’t want to be disturbed.”Mr. Atkinson nodded but hesitated before speaking again. “Sir, should I inform the kitchen about Mrs. Cagliari’s return tomorrow morning as we

“Adrian! To what do I owe the pleasure or displeasure?” Alexander greeted, arching a brow as he leaned against the doorframe. Adrian didn’t bother with a response, pushing past him into the mansion. He wasn’t here for pleasantries. After reviewing the results of the investigation into Ashleigh’s supposed stalker, Adrian had been forced to acknowledge something that Ashleigh had been telling the truth, and he had never truly paid attention to her struggles. That realization led him here, to the one person who had spent the most time with her at school. He needed answers.“Babe, where are……oh.” Megan’s voice trailed off as she entered the room, stopping short when she saw Adrian standing beside Alexander. Her eyes flickered between them, uncertain. Alexander casually draped an arm around her waist in a grounding gesture.“Babe, this is my friend Adrian—the one I told you about,” Alexander said. Recognition flashed in Megan’s eyes.“Oh… hi. Nice to meet you.” Her voice was polite, but t

The night was supposed to fun- a light-hearted escape from the stress of college and her marriage. But for Ashleigh, it was anything but that. While her friends lay passed out in their sleeping bags under, she sat on the couch staring at the empty bottles of wine on the coffee table, unable to sleep. No matter how hard she tried to distract herself, her thoughts kept circling back to Adrian and Caelia. The image from the article burned in her mind: the way they stood together, the warm smile on her face as she held him closely….. They looked perfect. They looked like the kind of couple Adrian and she were not.“Why should I care? It’s not like we were a real couple anyway” she thought bitterly, reaching for another bottle of wine. And yet, as she gulped it down, the bitterness in her chest remained…. Unwilling to leave. The more she thought about it, the more the pieces started to fit. A part of her felt cheated, her thoughts racing as she pieced everything together. His reluctance to

Ashleigh hummed along to the soft music playing in the background, releasing another curl from the iron. She ran a brush through her hair, watching in satisfaction as the waves settled around her shoulders. Paired with a cropped top and sweatpants, it was a casual yet put-together look—one she rarely put effort into. She stepped back, checking her reflection again. Was it too much? Her phone buzzed beside her, pulling her from her thoughts. She picked it up, skimming through the texts from her friends:Fiona: Ash did you give us a wrong address......?James: Girl is this your aunt’s house?Arthur: I’m at your aunt’s house apparently?A small chuckle escaped her lips. Their surprise was expected. Fiona and James hadn’t visited her since she got married, for obvious reasons, and Arthur was still getting to know her. This sleepover was meant to bridge the gap between them, to let them in, at least a little. Her gaze flickered back to the mirror. Maybe she really did need a second opinion

The scent of blood and dampness clung to the air, thick and suffocating. Desperate cries echoed off the stone walls as the restrained men struggled against the ropes biting into their skin.“P-please! Talk to your boss..... We’re not the ones he’s looking for." One of the men pleaded, struggling against the ropes. A figure emerged from the shadows, and the man’s heart momentarily leaped in hope. But as the dim light revealed the sharp, cold features of Mr. Turner, hope was crushed into dread.“You’ll only speak to my boss when you’re ready to tell me who your leader is.” Mr. Turner adjusted his glasses, his tone calm yet laced with authority. The man before him was a mess: his face swollen from repeated blows, blood crusting at the corner of his lips. Mr. Turner gave a nod of approval to the guards standing on either side, silently acknowledging their efficiency.“You’ve been here for a day now,” he continued, his gaze sweeping over the other restrained men.“Yet none of you have rev

Waves crashed against the gazebo's wooden pillars, sending sprays of salty water over the deck. Alana barely flinched as droplets landed on her legs. She lay stretched out on a beach chair, swirling the last of her wine in her glass while watching Diane, Cameron, and Samantha snap pictures at the edge of the platform. Music drifted from the speakers, mingling with the sound of the sea. The suggestion for a short vacation from her friends came suddenly, but she embraced it as she needed the break. School had been suffocating, and now that the source of her tension had been permanently removed, she could finally breathe again. Until Samantha’s sharp gasp shattered the moment. “What!” Samantha shrieked, eyes glued to the phone. Cameron, who had been holding Diane’s waist, immediately let go and moved to her side. “What is it, Samantha? You’re not saying anything.” Samantha hesitated, glancing at Alana before swallowing hard. “It’s a message from the department head on the faculty gro

The conference hall fell into stunned silence as Adrian’s voice cut through the tension like a blade. His presence alone was commanding, but his words sent an even stronger shockwave through the room. Ashleigh’s grip tightened on the edge of her chair, her heart hammering as she watched him walk toward the panelists with unshaken confidence. He’s here. The chairman, clearly unsettled but attempting to maintain control, cleared his throat. “Mr. Cagliari, this is a formal hearing. You cannot simply barge in and disrupt the proceedings.”Adrian’s lips curled into a smirk, his posture radiating quiet authority. “And let you pass judgment based on incomplete, biased information?”Murmurs rippled through the panelists, uncertainty flickering in their eyes. He strode to Ashleigh’s side, taking the empty seat beside her. His presence alone shifted the energy in the room, making the panelists exchange wary glances.Mrs. Cartwright however kept expression sharp, and leaned forward. “That’s a bo
