As she stared up at the blazing hot sky,she wondered what her life was going to look like .The clouds floated around happily in humor to her predicament.Being fired from the only place she had worked so hard to get into after graduation was quite a comic story indeed.
As she crossed the pathway leading up to her rundown apartment closeby,a few blocks away from the building that had held all her dashed hopes and dreams, her heel got stuck in the broken cemented sidewalk.Thrusting out with all her might, the heel of her favourite suede stiletto broke. She stumbled backwards and landed on her butt, grazing her hands onto the ground. It hurt. She knew that right at this moment ,the universe was mocking her.Working endlessly and tirelessly for years only to come out with the best degree and getting admitted into the workplace she had applied for seemed so far away now.shelooked down at her stubbed heel and wept for her bleak life."What's a beautiful girl like you doing on her ass on the sidewalk?"Her head whipped around so fast she was afraid her neck would snap. She raised her head up to look at the stranger that had his hand outstretched with a huge smile on his face."Am sorry who are you?"she spoke before her body could register what she had said. The said man was gorgeous, with chestnut brown hair and blue eyes,he looked so handsome,it took her breath away."Why don't I help you up?"he offered, gesturing to his outstretched hand. She nodded because words had seemed to fail her."Yes,thank you"she stammered. He pulled her up,stumbling due to her wobbly legs ,she collided with his chest."Sorry"Abruptly she straightened up."Can I buy you a cup of coffee?"he asked politely. Nodding, her lips widened In a shy smile as she felt her cheeks redden."There's a great coffee shop just two blocks away if we can just make it"he took the lead.Being careful not to loose him,she walked as fast as her legs could carry her to match his long strides. She noticed that he slowed down a few times to give her time to catch up which was very thoughtful of him."Come on in"he said ushering her in through the double glass doors that held the coffee sign, open. The place had an aesthetically pleasing mahogany feel to it.There wasn't much of a crowd for the lunch hour but it wasn't completely empty. There were customers scattered around the shop chatting away and sipping away at their coffees worry free. She let out a defeated sigh."What's wrong?Don't you like coffee?"he asked. She shook her head vehemently "no,no,I do.i was just...thinking about something else"She reassured him.He nodded and walked over to the counter to place their orders.Busing herself, she picked a table at the far end of the coffee place and slid into the curved seats overlooking the floor to ceiling windows. She watched as the people breezed by,some tired ,some happy but most of all she noticed the satisfied looks they all had as they passed by probably on their way back to work.Clearing his throat, she jerked back away from her internal musings."Are you alright?"he asked.Concern etched on the creases at the base of his forehead. She gave him a wan smile that didn't quite reach her eyes."Yes,I'm fine.just work "she summarised. She didn't need to bore a total stranger she had just met when she was a total mess, with her life problems. She just had to relax and savor this moment that is to come."Sorry,I haven't introduced myself. Am Micheal. Micheal wheeler"he said, giving her his outstretched hand once again, this time for a handshake and she obliged."My name is Alina.Alina Sanders"she replied. He nodded.Taking the information in ,a wistful smile etched onto his lips."That's a really nice name"he added. She felt her cheek go pink."thank you. But thank my parents. They're the ones who gave me the name. "She responded. He chuckled at her awkward attempt to lighten the mood, feeling his laughter was contagious, she followed suit. They were so wrapped up in the invisible bubble ,that they didn't fully notice when the waiter placed their drinks in front of them .She stared at the leaf design of the sweetened coffee.she wasn't a fan of sweetened coffee."Am sorry I went ahead to order your coffee.I figured you would prefer to drink yours sweetened"he explained as he watched her stare at her coffee, her expression unreadable. Her eyebrow arched upwards. "And what gave you that idea?"she asked,a little annoyed now."That's the impression you gave off.i might be wrong though "he interjected raising his hands up in surrender."That's much better"satisfied with his answer, she returned to the cup of coffee staring back at her,she stirred before finally taking a big gulp."So about your parents, what should I know about them?"he asked. She raised her head up from her cup of coffee to collide with his amused gaze smiling back at her.She looked at him over the rim of her coffee and wondered why he was interested in knowing about her parents. What kind of stranger gets into such details?she wondered and suddenly felt unsafe.Secluded in the corner with him,in a room full of people was supposed to reassure her but she felt goosebumps crawl up her skin.Who was this stranger? And what the heck was she doing with him?The questions kept bugging her.she eyed him skeptically as he sipped his coffeee waiting for her response. "Am sorry but as nice as you are,I don't feel comfortable telling you about such details of my life"she responded almost apologetically. He chuckled.Settling back in his seat,he leaned back and looked at her for a while."Look, like I said Am Micheal Wheeler.Doesn't that seem to ring a bell for you?"he spoke.Shaking her head vehemently in confusion, she tried to grasp where this conversation was going until..."Wheeler of the Wheeler enterprises?"she asked hesitantly. He blinked in confirmation. She gasped as she suddenly realized who and where he was.He was her boss.MICHEAL’S POVAs he settled in his seat watching the transparent liquid flow from the nozzle down the tube through the injection needle into his skin. He felt his body slowly burning from the inside out as his body adjusted to the foreign liquid flowing into his body.“Doctor how is he faring?” He heard the faint sound coming from outside the door. It sounded a lot like Jeff.“His body is responding well to the treatment hopefully, we can fully eradicate the metastasised testes.” The doctor replied.“ can I see him now after he’s done?” Jeff asked “I think you should know the answer to that question as a doctor yourself. He needs to be heavily secluded in a well sterilised room and avoid any contact with anything or anyone that could pose as a threat or a source of infection to him” the doctor said, annoyance slightly evident in his voice.“No problem. I can wait until he’s out of the danger zone” Jeff respondedThey exchanged pleasantries for a short while before it went quiet again
ALINA'S POV“Mum please you have to take it easy on Micheal, it isn’t his fault that I’m here” Alina began.“Stop defending him Alina. If I don’t talk to him about this, the problem will persist” she inhaled deeply. She started with a much calmer voice.“Look, I don’t mean to attack him but I just feel like he’s taking your health a little too lightly. Does he know that you’re setting a life inside of you? I don’t think he fully understands how delicate your situation is. All he cared about was just putting it in” her mother blurted out throwing her hands up in expatriation.“Mum!” Alina said as her cheeks grew hot. She looked at her mum who eyed her skeptically with a wide smile spread across her lips. Her smile faded as she noticed Alina wince in pain.“Where the hell is that husband of yours?” She said searching around the room. Before Alina could protest she was already walking out the door. She groaned. Why is no-one listening to her?Her head whipped around at the sound of someo
MICHEAL'S POVIt took all his resolve not to react to the stinging on his cheek.Instead, he settled for straightening up the smile on his face."Mrs Sanders, hello to you too" He greeted."Forget the pleasantries, Micheal. You promised me that my daughter wouldn't be put in harm's way anymore!" She shrieked"I blame myself for trusting you!" She said aloud and walked past him to stand beside her bed. She took Alina's hand in hers and gave her a sad smile."My poor daughter is being neglected. I feel so sorry for her. "A muscle ticked in his cheek."Mum, that's not true. He's taking care of me" Alina defended weakly."You're too blinded to see it, Alina. The father of your child should be at your side at all times. Having lots of help from maids wouldn't just be enough. All the things that have happened are a testament to that fact." She complained.Micheal walked out ignoring Alina calling out to him. He couldn't be here anymore. As he stepped out of the room, he took one swing of
ALINA'S POVShe couldn't hold it in anymore. The suspense was eating away at her. Ever since last night, she had been unable to let the image of what she had seen go. There were lots of questions playing in her head. There was no justification for why Linda would be in her room that late at night. And the way she looked when she stood outside her door...She shuddered to think of what must have been going through her mind at the time. That's why she had resolved to trap her in the kitchen when Martha had gone out to get groceries. They were alone."Tell me Linda, what exactly were you doing in my room last night?" She blurted out.Sandra looked up, the corners of her lips twitched but she was calm. She stared up at her with widened eyes."What are you talking about ma'am?" She asked feigning surprise."I was in my bed all night," She said.Alina scoffed."You don't expect me to believe that" she responded.Sandra shrugged."I'm sorry ma'am, but I have no clue what you're talking about
MICHEAL'S POVWhen he awoke, he found her side of the bed empty. He sat up abruptly, panicked. He searched everywhere for her and padded down the stairs shirtless in search of her.He let out a sigh of relief when he found her hunched over on the couch taking a big bite of ice cream. A smile crept up on his face as he saw the guilt playing on her face."I was just craving some ice cream," She said and made a show to bring the lid over it to cover it up.He walked over to her chuckling as he sat beside her."It's okay." He told her."You're allowed to have some" He reassured her pulling the lid off to drop back onto the table. "Go on" He urgedShe eyed him skeptically. "Are you okay?" He asked when she dug in almost immediately. He watched the worry crease on her face. She shrugged her shoulders before taking a big bite."Are you sure?" He asked again. She gave him a forced smile and nodded in response. "I'm okay Micheal. You should go back to bed. You have work tomorrow" she said.
ALINA'S POVShe groaned as the light hit her eyes. "Madam wake up." She heard the voice call out to her.Groggily, she sat up straight."Martha, what are you doing here this early?" She said rubbing her eyes to try to clear her blurry vision. Her head throbbed gently. She groaned, raising her hand to reach for her head, memories of last night came flooding back.Micheal embarrassed her, their fight at the foot of the stairs, her crying her eyes out."Ma'am oh my goodness, your eyes are so puffy. Are you okay?" Martha asked rising to massage circles underneath her eyes with concern laced in her voice. She pulled her head away from Martha's grip."Martha, Martha, I'm fine " she reassured, holding onto her hands, she gave her a forced smile that didn't quite reach her eyes.Martha returned her smile with a nod of her head. She raised a hand to run it down her matted bed hair."Okay ma'am, I'll go downstairs to get your breakfast upstairs. Just freshen up."She said heading for the do
