Robert's POV

My night had been a blur of passion, fleeting and empty, yet serving its purpose. In a lavish suite high above the city, I had indulged in another meaningless encounter. She was beautiful, confident—a social butterfly who knew exactly what she wanted. Her laughter had echoed in the dimly lit room, her touch bold and inviting. It had been easy, effortless. A temporary escape from the thoughts that refused to leave me.

The first hints of dawn crept through the curtains and our fervor subsided into a soft, lingering warmth, my mind betrayed me, drifting back to a memory that refused to be silenced. I shook my head to clear the thought and get lost in the soft warmth.

After about fifteen minutes, the girl got up and went away telling me that she would love to spend more time with me again, I just nodded with a polite smile.

I lay there, the sheets still warm from the girl's presence, yet my mind had already drifted somewhere else—somewhere far from the lingering scent of her perfume.

Even  though the physical memories of the sensual encounter lingered on my skin, my heart was restless—haunted by a vision that refused to fade. I shook my head again but the reality settled over me like a slow tide.

I thought of her.

Not the woman beside me last night, but the one who had haunted me for almost a year. The one I had seen on the most painful day of my life.

The memory of that day was burned into my mind, refusing to fade. It had been the most devastating moment of my life—the day I lost my brother.

I was on the other side of the world taking care of the business when I got my mom's call she was excited that John was getting married, though she was upset that he didn't tell us anything about it earlier and they had to attend the wedding only as guests, she was excited too, eager to meet the woman who had captured his heart.

Being very impulsive, John had decided to marry all of a sudden without informing the family.

Even though I was also upset with that as I would not be there for the wedding, I had immediately booked the first flight home, wanting to be there for my brother’s big day, but that day I returned home for his wedding, only to attend a funeral instead.

John had died in a car accident. The shock of it had been overwhelming, a crushing weight I could barely process. And amid the sea of mourners, I had seen her—his bride.

My heart became heavy with sorrow and loss, I had come for my brother’s wedding and here I was attending his funeral.  Amid the quiet murmurs of grief and the heaviness of loss, I had seen her— the mysterious bride.

Among the sea of mourners dressed in black, she had appeared like a vision—delicate, poised, ethereal and yet carrying a sadness that mirrored my own. Her eyes, carried profound sorrow. All the time she didn't even look at anyone. Her gaze fixed on something unseen.

Even in my grief, I couldn’t look away. There was something about her—an air of sadness that ran deeper than the rest of us, as if she carried a pain only she could understand.

I could feel her grief and a quiet strength, that had held me captive in a way I couldn’t explain. I hadn’t even known her name, yet her presence had stayed with me, lingering in my thoughts, refusing to fade.

I had wanted to speak to her after the funeral, to know more about the woman my brother had married, but she was gone before I had the chance. Just… gone.

It had made no sense. She was John’s wife. She should have stayed. My father had told me she had asked for permission to leave, had refused even the inheritance rightfully hers. That had stunned all of us. Any woman in her position would have taken it—she was legally entitled to John’s share of our empire. Yet, she had walked away from it all, leaving nothing behind except questions that had tormented me ever since.

Why??

For the first time in my life, I had been drawn to someone so deeply, and it had shaken me to my core. But she was my brother’s wife.

I had tried to push away the feelings, telling myself they were just a reaction to grief, nothing more.

It wasn’t love. It wasn’t longing. It was just… unfinished business.

At least, that’s what I told myself.

And my parents? They hadn’t given up either. My father had been trying to track her down, wanting to give her what was rightfully hers. My mother, always one to hope, had even wondered if she might be carrying John’s child. It was a possibility none of us could ignore. If she was, then that child was a part of our family. But every attempt to find her had led to dead ends.

She had disappeared, leaving behind nothing but an ache of uncertainty.

I threw myself into distractions—endless nights with strangers, fleeting passion, empty conversations. I convinced myself that if I kept going, if I lost myself in casual encounters, I would eventually forget her. But no matter how many times I tried to replace the ache with temporary pleasure, it never worked. Her face, her sorrow-filled eyes, stayed with me.

Nearly a year had passed, and I was still trapped in the same cycle. Another night, another stranger, another futile attempt to escape the pull she had on me. As I lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, the warmth of the woman beside me already fading, I knew the truth. No one else could ever make me forget her.

And then, fate intervened.

This morning, just as I was coming to terms with another night lost to meaningless passion, I saw her again.

It had been a mere flicker—a muted news broadcast playing in the corner of my suite. But as my eyes drifted to the screen, my heart stopped. There she was.

A feature about a museum, filled with children’s laughter and vibrant colors. And there, in the background, she was standing. Not a fragment of my imagination, not a dream conjured by a grieving mind, but real. Alive. Here, in this very city.

The sight of her sent a jolt through me, sharp and undeniable. I sat up, my heart pounding with a realization so clear it left no room for doubt.

Everything else became meaningless. The feeling I had tried so hard to bury roared back to life, undeniable and overwhelming. I sat up, my heart racing. I had spent months pretending she was just a passing obsession, a ghost from my past. But now I know the truth.

I had to find her.

Because this wasn’t just about curiosity. It wasn’t just about closure.

It was about her. And I wasn’t going to let her disappear again.

Avni's POV I was in the kitchen, bustling about, preparing breakfast and lunch for my dad and me. When the wall clock struck seven, a sudden panic hit me. “Oh, God, I’m going to be late!” I hurriedly wrapped up my work and rushed to get ready. At school, as I entered my classroom, the lovely smiles of the children instantly lifted my spirits. One little girl, especially fond of me, approached with a wildflower and a drawing in hand. “Ma’am, I got a flower and a card for you. You are my… best teacher,” she chirped, her grin lighting up her face. I knelt down, cradling her in a warm embrace. “Awww… thanks, sweetheart. But you should say ‘favourite teacher.’” “Fav… favour… Best teacher!” she giggled, and in that moment, the purity of their smiles filled me with a strength that made every challenge seem a little lighter. After teaching a new nursery rhyme and leading the children in practice, I made my way to the staff room during lunch. My colleagues were laughing and sharing foo

Avni's POV Do you have a child?” he asked softly.“No! No!” I snapped, my usually pale cheeks flushing crimson as I turned my head away from him. When I mustered the next words, my voice had dropped to a trembling whisper, “No, I’m not.”How I had longed, in secret moments, to be pregnant—but I wasn’t. A solitary tear escaped, trailing down my cheek.“Forgive me, please. I’m sorry—I meant no distress,” he said, his tone not one of shock but of genuine regret for having upset me.I forced a small smile. “It’s all right. I suppose anyone might have assumed that. It was natural, I guess.”“You like kids, don’t you?” he asked with a warm smile.“Yes, I do,” I replied, feeling a gentle lightness as I recalled the pure sweetness of little ones. “They’re so sweet and pure at heart.”“I figured as much—that’s why you work here, isn’t it?” he said, and I merely nodded. There was an ease in our conversation that surprised me; talking to him felt unexpectedly comforting, as though his eyes held

" Then don't you think it is high time you started doing it again?" he said, and I felt a surge of irritation.Who was he to say that? I disliked his interference. Yet, what astonished me more was the intensity of my anger. I had believed myself incapable of feeling anything anymore. But he wasn’t wrong. My own thoughts have been veering in that direction lately. Only last week, I had contemplated returning to the riding club. My anger dissipated.Even Avanti, my sister, had been urging me to do the same. Perhaps she and this gentleman were right. I needed to make an effort. And perhaps this was the right time."Would you like to see the place where John worked? Where did we first meet?" I asked him.He smiled and nodded. His beautiful blue eyes met mine—so reminiscent of John’s, yet different. His eyes held many shades of blue, their depths as captivating as the ocean, pulling me in."Yes, I would," he replied.I did not know why I agreed. The mere thought of going there made me mise

Chapter 5Avni's POV I cleared my throat, but when they still made no sign of noticing me, I decided it best to leave quietly—I did not wish to intrude upon their privacy. I was utterly mortified at having caught them in the midst of their making‐out. After all, she was my elder sister, for God’s sake, and I so desperately longed to speak with her, as she was the one person who had always guided me.But that could wait; I could not possibly disturb their special moment. They had only been married last month, after all—I would return later, perhaps tomorrow. In my haste to escape, I accidentally bumped into a decorative pot by the door. It toppled over with a resounding crash. I quickly stooped to set it right, red-faced with embarrassment.Within a minute, Avanti appeared to see what had caused the noise. Her face was flushed, her lips slightly swollen. I felt awkward, knowing full well I had already disturbed their intimacy. Forcing a smile, I greeted her, “Hi! Good evening…”“Hi, g

Avni's POVRobert's offer was very good. Even Avanti said that it was high time that our father started to pay for a housekeeper. I served dinner for my dad. He ate it without saying a word or even looking at me. I used to get hurt by his behavior earlier, but then I got used to it. I was quite overworked now as I was doing all the work. Also, Avanti was not here anymore. I told my dad to hire a maid or housekeeper but he said he was not used to anyone else working at home. Avanti was right, the offer given by Robert Taylor looked like a lifeline. I need to get away from my domineering father. I wanted to go to Ranikhet. Suddenly it all seemed possible... Our father had to take care of himself and he could always hire a housekeeper to keep his house. I decided that I would take the offer and would go to Ranikhet to take care of the kids. I took a deep breath and thought of calling him back to tell him about my decision. Just then the phone started ringing, I picked up the pho

After driving for about 3 hours, I finally reached Ranikhet.I took a deep breath and parked the car in the market parking lot; I went into a coffee house and ordered a coffee and a fruit muffin. And then following his very precise landmark locations and directions, I finally reached his farmhouse. I pulled up outside his home. It looked huge and beautiful. It was a mansion. It had a very English-type structure. I got out of the car and stood in front of the two-storeyed, white building with lots of windows. There were a lot of pine trees lined up around the boundaries of the property. The place looked beautiful with lush green grass lawns. Just then, the main door of the house opened, and Robert came with a butler following him. " Avni! I am glad you are here. Welcome to my home !! " He said.

Chapter 8He opened the door of a room and stood back, allowing me to enter the room first. It was very nice; somehow, I had this feeling that I would be treated as a member of the family and not like some casual governess. This room proved my point. It was very big and beautiful. My breath was caught at the beauty of it. It had more antique furniture in the shape of wardrobes, chest of drawers, and dressing tables, completed with the four-poster bed draped in cream velvet with coffee-colored hand embroidered tie backs with matched curtains at the windows. " Oh, my God !! This room is lovely. " " I thought you would be comfortable in this room as it has a view of the front garden. Did you like it? " " It is awesome!! Beautiful !! Thanks a lot. " I said with a smile. " I am glad you liked it, I just wish that you get very happy here. I wanted you to be very comfortable. Please don't hesitate to tell me if you need anything else. We reached the place where I had left my car. But it was nowhere to be seen now. " My car was parked here, right?? " I asked out of curiosity." I had it garaged for you. I will show you around in the morning. " He said and I nodded." You must be a very good driver since you came here driving all by yourself. Have you been driving for long?
