Maureen's POV
'Should I wait with you till he arrives?' Lucia asked me after one hour of waiting for Lance. It was our routine. He came to my school to take me home every day and any day he couldn't come he would call me. I have tried calling him several times but he would not pick up. 'Will you try to call him again?' Lucia asked. I knew she was impatient to get home. Her father was off duty that day and she wanted to spend time with him. 'I have called him several times but he wouldn't pick, what makes you think he would pick now?' I snapped at Lucia. 'Hey, don't take it out on me, Maureen. I am only trying to show concern,' Lucia said surprised at my behaviour. I realized what I had just done and apologized,' I am sorry, Lucia, it's just that he has been acting weird since his birthday,' I sighed sadly. Something suddenly occurred to me.' You know what Lucia, give me your phone.' 'What are you going to do with it?' Lucia asked looking at me suspiciously. Despite her reservation, she handed me the phone. I called Lance's number on her phone, put it on speaker, and pushed the phone on her to speak to him. Lance picked up almost immediately after it started ringing. 'Hello.' Lance's sleepy voice answered from the other side. I breathed a sigh of relief that he was fine. Why then was he not picking up my calls? 'Em, em hello Lance,' Lucia said looking lost for words. I signaled for her to ask him about picking me up at school. 'Hello, are you there Lucia, is everything ok?' Lance asked, his voice seemingly losing its sleepiness. Lucia's silence must have made him wonder if something was wrong. 'Yeah, everything is fine. I was just wondering if you would be coming for Maureen or if you would be sending Dominus,' Lucia rushed everything in one breath. There was a long pause on Lance's side. 'Are you there?' Lucia asked not sure of what to make of his silence. I looked at the phone intensely as if I could see Lance by staring at it. 'Yes, I am here. Are you with her right now?' Lance asked. I shook my head telling Lucia to say no. 'No. I left her believing you would be there,' Lucia gritted her teeth. Lucia was all sorts of trouble rolled into one person but lying was not her thing especially not to her crush. 'She is no longer a child Lucia, she can take care of herself,' Lance's words broke my already hurting heart to a thousand pieces. I looked back at Lucia with tears in my eyes. She looked sorry for me. I didn't want her to feel bad and spoil her time with her father so I tried hiding my pain and smiled at her but she wasn't fooled. 'When did your baby suddenly become so grown up? Because you turned eighteen?' Lucia got back to her normal self and decided to question Lance. 'You won't understand Lucia. There is a lot I am trying to process right now,' Lance sighed from the other side. 'Maureen has been calling your number all day but you are not picking,' Lucia accused him. 'Tell her to get herself home or better still sleep in school if she wants.' 'Tell her yourself I am not with her.' Lucia and I were surprised by what he said. 'You really underestimate me, Lucia. Have you forgotten that I have my wolf now? I heard two people breathing on the phone.' 'What!' Lucia and I said together forgetting the fact that we didn't want him to know I was there. 'My ears are four times sharper now than before as well as my sight. Imagine your sight better than what it already is now,' Lance explained further. 'Lance,' I called his name with a trembling voice. 'See you around Lucia,' Lance said and cut the call pretending not to have heard me call him. I looked at Lucia with tears rolling down my eyes. I did not understand what he was doing or why he was doing it to me. 'Why is Lance treating me this way, Lucia?' I asked crying bitterly. Lucia hugged me and patted me on the back gently. 'It's ok Maureen, don't take it to heart. He said he is going through a lot. Why don't you give him some time to adjust.' 'He is not the first person to get his wolf. Why then is he behaving like this?' 'True, he is not the first person to get their wolf but how many Beta wolves have you met in this lifetime?' Lucia asked. I shook my head indicating none. Lucia smiled at me, she wrapped her hands around my shoulder and urged me towards the school entrance. We walked in companionable silence till we got to the bus station and sat down waiting for the bus. 'I thought about something just now,' Lucia started a conversation to break the silence. 'I am thinking that you should try talking to Lance.' 'I tried talking to him yesterday,' I said stubbornly. 'Don't be hard-headed Maureen.' 'I am not being hard-headed, I do not like the way he is pushing me away,' I said close to tears again. 'He might just need somebody to talk to. Maybe then he can stop behaving this way.' 'I will try Lucia. I am his sister, we are closer than most siblings. I expect that if anything is bothering him, he should be able to talk to me.' 'Have you thought maybe he may not want to bother you with whatever he is going through?' 'Who then will he bother with it?' 'I am sure he will confide in Dominus now and then. You know boys and their ways,' Lucia said looking thoughtful. 'What is going on in your head?' I asked rolling my eyes. I know her too well not to recognize that look in her eyes. 'I am thinking maybe...' she suddenly stopped and shook her head lightly before she continued. 'You know what? forget about it.' 'Out with it Lucia, you know I would not let go, so just say whatever it is already.' 'I am just thinking of something. Is it possible that Lance is terminally ill?' 'What do you mean?' A fear I have never known crawled right into my chest and sat. 'You know, maybe when he got his wolf he discovered they were both going to die soon. You know your wolf will know these things,' Lucia explained. I was too dumbfounded to say anything. My hands started trembling. Losing Lance was the last thing I wanted to happen in my life. He has been with me from the beginning of my life. I trembled in the hot afternoon sun. 'Can being terminally ill make him behave like this?' I asked Lucia with my voice shaking slightly. 'I guess he is trying to make you hate him so that by the time he is gone, you won't hurt too much,' Lucia explained. Each word she spoke felt like a sword piercing my heart. The thought of him dying turned my already shattered heart to shambles. My hands trembled slightly as I adjusted the strap of my folder. As I was about to open my mouth to ask Lucia how best to ask him then her bus arrived. Right behind hers my bus also arrived. I waved Lucia goodbye and boarded the bus. I intentionally went to the back of the bus to sit. I was so lost in the thought of losing Lance that I burst into tears without even knowing I was crying until tears dropped on my folder. I have never been that scared in my life. Losing anyone was strange to me. The fact that I might lose my brother soon scared me to no end. When the bus got to where I was to alight, I was too carried away in my thoughts. But the bus driver had to shout to make me come out of my musing. I was always the last to alight each time I used the bus. The Alpha and Beta's houses were built on the edge of the park's land, close to the forest. so the last bus stop was called AlphaBeta Line. Since my father was the Beta, I was well-known in school and among pack members. I walked the rest of the distance home with the fear of opening the door and finding Lance lying dead on the floor of the sitting room. I opened the door and rushed towards Lance's room but was stopped when I heard a sound in the kitchen. I turned to check what was happening in the kitchen first. I entered the kitchen to find Lance drinking directly from the bottle in front of the refrigerator. 'Lance, can we talk?' I said forgetting that he might not have noticed me coming in. Lance nearly got water in his windpipe as he coughed hard from my interruption. 'I am sorry I scared you,' I said when his cough had subsided. 'It's ok. I should have paid more attention to my environment.' 'Lance, please can we talk?' I repeated my first question l. 'I am all ears.' 'Please be my brother again. Even if you are dying, I can take anything. But please don't keep me in the dark.' 'Wait wait wait. Dying? Me?' I am not dying,' Lance said looking surprised. 'Why then are you behaving like this? Why are you treating me like you don't love me anymore? If I did something wrong please tell me I will apologize Lance. Stop punishing me this way. You are all I have got please, Lance please,' I broke down totally in front of him. Lance looked pained looking at me crying like that. He came close to me and held my hand firmly in his. 'Maureen, You have not done anything to offend me. You can't understand even if I explain it to you. Besides, you shouldn't know.' He paused a little cleaning my tears with the pad of his hands. 'You will understand someday but until then, no matter what I do to you, you must always remember that I love you, my dear sister. But for now, stay away from me.' After saying that he walked out of the kitchen leaving me crying profusely. For the first time in my life, the fear of losing someone I love gripped my heart and squeezed hard.Maureen's POVI woke up with a start. Something woke me up or more like a person woke me up. I could smell Lance's scent in the air. I wondered for a while if he came into my room.Since our talk Monday afternoon in the kitchen, he had been avoiding me like I had leprosy. At my most desperate moment, I kicked against his warning and went into his room. He was not in the room when I got there so I sat on his bed and waited for him.I waited for a long time and when I started feeling sleepy, I laid my head on his pillow and fell asleep.A loud growl woke me from my sleep. I woke up with fright so I started shaking from the impact. Lance did not look at me twice. He banged the door almost removing it from the hinges. Since that day for the whole week, I had not laid my eyes on him.Sensing his scent in my room was the last thing I expected. I had always liked the way he smelled. He smelled like the forest after a heavy rain. Since he got his wolf, his smell has seemed more intense.I loo
Lance's POVI was going crazy and I knew it but I couldn't help it. The moon goddess must be playing tricks on me. It was my eighteenth birthday but it was my saddest. My wolf had happily tackled my sister to the ground in happiness in the presence of all that were there to celebrate my eighteenth birthday. As the future Beta of the park, it would have been disappointing if I didn't get my wolf. It had happened before in our lineage and this had made my parents especially my mum very anxious. My grandfather was not the direct bloodline of the Beta post but according to history his elder brother who ought to take over from their father never got his wolf.At first, they had thought his wolf was only delayed for a particular reason but when he didn't get his wolf at the age of twenty-five, my grandfather who was twenty years then was asked to start training.According to my grandfather, the training was difficult and draining and he nearly gave up. It wasn't easy to train to become a Be
Lance's POVI heard a soft knock on my door but I ignored it. I was sure it was one of the kitchen hands coming to wake me, probably on Mum's instruction.I had turned all night trying to sleep. I had gone through my own birthday party like a zombie. The idea that the moon goddess gave me a crazy wolf was enough to keep me awake all night. So I wasn't ready to get up that morning. The knock came again and I ignored it, thinking the person would go away when I refused to answer. I waited for another three seconds and dosed off to sleep. My sister's smell was all I smelled in the house now so I wasn't ready to strain myself to get who was at the door specifically.I was drifting off to sleep when suddenly somebody jumped into my bed. The instance the person's body touched mine I knew who it was. My wolf became too alert for my liking.'Shit, Maureen what are you doing here so early?' I shouted at my sister the instance I got on my feet.'Lance, I have always done this in the morning,' s
Lance's POV'Lance stop, let her go,' Dominus shouted at me, his voice piercing the haze covering my senses. I dropped her and started shivering.I couldn't believe I almost killed my sister. I had warned her to stay away from me. I avoided going home because of her. I was going crazy and my wolf was not helping matters. He yearned for her like a pervert. I was going to go mad if care wasn't taken. I had to stay as far away from her as possible until my crazy wolf got back to his senses. I had found her sleeping in my room days before, I had to strip the bed of every layer of clothing on it just to get rid of her chocolaty scent. It was bad enough that her smell hung around the house, even in the surrounding bushes.I had cried on Mum's bosom that morning too overwhelmed with wanting her and trying to stay away from her. I was not about to commit incest because some stupid wolf thought nothing of it. If he was crazy, I was sane. It was an endless war between me and my wolf. In the m
Lance's POV'Lancelot tell me it is a lie,' my mum fumed immediately I entered the pack's hospital room where my sister laid hooked to a machine. I walked towards my mum holding my hands in front of me as if I was praying. That day after I ran, I stayed away from home. It's been two days. Only Dominus knew where I was. I couldn't face my parents, look them in the eye and tell them I almost killed their daughter. Despite the fact that they weren't that close to Maureen, I knew no parent would want their child dead. I walked towards my mum carefully, unsure of how emotionally stable she was. She was after all a Beta wolf. No amount of love she has for me can stop her from hurting me if her wolf decided to punish me for what I did and I was sure my wolf would not lift a finger in defense because of two things. One, she was my mother, two, it would be an opportunity for my wolf to see me punished. He has been going mad in my head for the past two days. 'Mum, I am really very sorry. You
Maureen's POVI could hear voices around me even if I could not discern what they were saying. I heard but I was frustrated by my fussy brain. Why can't I understand a word of what they were saying? I tried hard to open my eyes but it seemed something kept pulling me under. I almost wept. I tried, I fought, just maybe I could open one eye but I lost the battle and gave in. The darkness swallowed me again as I went under. 'Hey Maureen. Can you hear me?' I heard someone's voice saying. This time I recognized the voice as Lucia's and I understood everything she was saying.'The doctors said we should speak to you that you can hear us. If it is true that you can hear me, I miss you Maureen. It is very boring without you. I want my friend back, I want all our silly jokes and adventures.' She stopped a while. I heard her blow her nose. I knew she was crying, my heart ached. I wished I could at least talk to her and tell her to stop crying. I wished I could comfort her and embrace her. I
Maureen's POVI walked into my room with an unexplainable feeling of emptiness. A lot of things didn't make sense. A lot of questions begging for answers.Lucia followed closely behind me. She had not said anything since we left the hospital. It was as if she could understand my pain. She squeezed my hand once in a while as if to tell me she was there if I needed her. What I really needed was to be alone but I couldn't bring myself to do that to Lucia, not after the way she took care of me in the hospital.I sat down on my bed and looked around my room. Even I didn't understand why I was looking from one angle to the other as if looking for something. I was sad to the level of depression. Lucia dropped my overnight bag on the floor then silently came to sit next to me on the bed. She had been by my side since I woke up at the hospital. If not for the seriousness of the situation, I would have laughed at how comical her face looked when she shouted from the surprise of me waking up af
Lance's POVI noticed the difference in the atmosphere immediately we entered our pack territory. My wolf perked up and I noticed that Dominus too looked anxious.I didn't know what type of welcome I would receive from my sister. My parents will surely be happy to see me after three years. We spoke on the phone everyday or I would say I speak with dad everyday. Mum will put in sometimes and I would have no option but to talk to her. Mum and I were never really close but dad and I were like best friends. I tell him everything except for the fact that my sister was my mate. I couldn't even muster the audacity to look him in the eyes or tell him on the phone that his daughter, my sister was my mate.'I just wish that my wolf will not look at my sister the same way anymore,' I said to Dominus.'We are about to find out. If your wolf still feels the same, then you have to let your parents know this time,' Dominus advised.'Tell my parents what? Are you crazy? My dad will simply get a silv
Maureen's POV'Maureen,' Asher shouted my name before he flew at me and we both fell on the ground as an arrow flew over our heads.Lance and Dominus immediately jumped into action as they ran towards the direction the arrow came from. As they ran towards the direction, another arrow flew right towards Lance and he threw it off with his sword. Dominus became invisible at that point and the arrows kept coming for Lance aggressively. I quickly got up from the ground as I gazed after my mate in worry.'Thank you Alpha,' I said to Asher and he simply nodded his acknowledgement. The arrows stopped and Dominus appeared with his hand firmly holding a male wolf by his clothes. We walked towards them quickly as Dominus made the male wolf kiss the ground in front of Lance.'Who are you?' Lance asked in a booming voice that clearly belonged to his wolf.'You are trespassing,' the male wolf answered.'This is an unclaimed land. I believe it should have a free passage,' Dominus said.'It belongs
Maureen's POVI stood still for the second time in five minutes. 'Why do I feel as if we are being followed?' I asked no one in particular. I just wanted to know if anyone else felt what I was feelingWe had set out on the journey for the search very early. As early as six o'clock am. We didn't eat breakfast but we packed sandwiches and juices in our back packs courtesy of Asher's house keeper. 'You might be feeling like that because Ian had implied in your discussion that he was at Amman's pack with you,' Lucia said shrugging,'The feeling is so strong. I felt it two days ago when we went out on Dawn's insistence to have a look at Royal Touch,' I said.'If I tell you something, promise me you wouldn't freak out,' Lance said and we all stopped walking to look at him.'What is it Lance?' I asked looking at him nervously.'I think Ian is actually following us. I have seen him briefly once or twice,' Lance said and we all gaped at him in pure disbelief.'Are you trying to spook us,' Lu
Dawn's POVTo say I was nervous would be an understatement. I woke up feeling nervous. I had a mate! It was such a novelty for me. I had hoped for a life that would involve other people while I roamed the forests and bushes of unclaimed lands. But at a point I had given up on that dream.I had brushed my teeth and had my bath rather early. Despite the fact that I didn't sleep early, I still couldn't wake up late. I was looking forward to the discussion I was to have with Asher. I tied the bathrobe and wrapped my wet hair in a towel before stepping out of the bathroom. I had a major scare as the door to my room suddenly burst open. Maureen and Lucia walked in without the courtesy of knocking first. 'What are you two doing here? It is rather too early,' I said looking at them in surprise.'We know, right. We were thinking that just maybe we might find Alpha Asher here,' Lucia said sounding overly dramatic.I rolled my eyes at her. I had noticed that Lucia liked blowing things out of
Lance's POV'Somebody should wake me up. Am I dreaming?' Alpha Asher said as we all sat in his study after Maureen had declared that Alpha Asher was a part of her mission.Dawn covered the light projecting from Alpha Asher's torso with her hands when it became obvious that the light wasn't dulling off anytime soon. Maureen had slumped and I had to catch her before she got the ground. 'You are not dreaming Alpha Asher. She is the golden wolf,' Lucia said. Maureen was still leaning against me as it seemed as if the experience had sapped her of her strength.'You mean the golden wolf is a female?'Alpha Asher asked.'You have a problem with that?' Maureen asked sitting straight.'No. I don't have a problem with it. The thing is we had always thought the golden wolf would be a male. He was a male the last time going by the record,' Alpha Asher answered still looking surprised.'I guess the golden wolf decided to choose the perfect sex. Don't you think Alpha?' Lucia asked.'It sure did,'
Lance's POV'We might have to call Grandma Gina to confirm what he said,' Maureen said as we explained everything Alpha Asher has said. 'We need to be sure he is saying the truth. He might be lying for all we know,' Lucia said and Dawn growled at her.'I am sorry. I didn't mean to do that,' Dawn apologized as a slight blush tinted her cheeks.'He is your mate Dawn, it is natural for you to defend him. I should not have called him a liar. I am sorry. I am just confused,' Lucia apologized to Dawn.'I understand you perfectly. There is no need to apologize,' Dawn said calmly.Dominus picked his phone and called Grandma Gina. 'Hello my boy,' Grandma Gina said happily. 'It's so good of you to call this tired old lady after calling everyone and exempting me.' Dominus rolled his eyes but he still couldn't hide the smile that pulled at his lips. 'Dawn called you grandma,' Dominus said.'Of course that is because she is my only grandchild,' Grandma Gina said sarcastically.'I am sorry gran
Lance's POVI had stopped Alpha Asher from following Dawn for two reasons. One I knew from experience that she would not want him to follow her like that and there was every possibility that she would not talk to him.Two I thought it was best to let her confide her worries to someone who could calm her down first before he went to her.I actually pity him. I was once in a situation like his and I knew it wasn't easy to feel helpless and your mate unreachable.'You need to sit down Alpha. I believe things will fall into place. Just give her some time,' Dominus said sympathetically as Alpha Asher paced back and forth looking up the stairs. He came back to sit down looking agitated. None of us could eat. Even Lisa looked confused but she asked no questions. After about thirty minutes we heard footsteps on the stairs and we looked up to see Maureen leading Dawn down the stairs.Alpha Asher quickly stood up. He was gazing at Dawn's face as if he could somehow see what was going through he
Maureen's POVI watched in surprise as the Alpha of Royal Touch approached Dawn with his eyes a replica of one of Dawn's eye balls. His eyes were midnight dark like Dawn's right eye. His wolves eyes! Then it occurred to me that when he came to pick Lisa up, I had thought that his chocolaty eyes looked familiar. It was the exact color of Dawn's left eye. His own eye color! At first, Dawn allowed him to hold her in a very tight embrace but then she gently let go of him and stepped back. 'Hi.' She said to him smiling but I could see that the smile didnt reach her eyes.'Hi,' Alpha Asher said as his eyes returned to their normal colour. 'Can we all go inside?' An elderly woman said beaming with smile.I guess she was very happy that the Alpha found his mate. 'We will follow you inside in a minute please can you just excuse us for some minutes, we need to talk to Dawn?' Dominus said gently but that didn't stop Alpha Asher from growling at him.'We promise to be with you in few minutes
Lance's POV'Remember what I told you. Call immediately you discover or even suspect that something is not right,' dad reiterated as they saw us to the waiting car. Dominus would be driving while I would take the front passenger seat. The girls would be sitting in the back seat. Two soldier vans were to follow us to the border of Royal Pack and after we meet Alpha Asher's Beta at the border, they would turn back.'Do not worry dad, mum. We will be fine,' I said trying to reassure them.'We know that you have all somehow found favour in the eyes of the Moon Goddess but still you need to be careful,' the Luna said and we nodded. 'Let them be on their way already. They are not kids anymore. They carry the future of the entire wolf world on their shoulders,' Grandma Gina chided. We all laughed at the way she rolled her eyes whilst saying that before giving our parents hugs and saying goodbye. Dawn hugged Grandma Gina a tad longer and I couldn't help as our discussion the previous after
Lance's POVThe day after the Alpha's arrival saw everyone busy. We had to supervise a lot of things. There was influx of pack members from the new pack that the pack house was filled to the brim.Dad had explained to me in the morning how the Alpha had divided the people into different sections with each of the sections having a head. Irene's brother was overseeing the pack in the absence of dad and the Alpha. He was of Beta blood and he could do it. 'Mara is truly strong you know?' Dominus said. He was standing beside me as we supervised some of the young wolves who were moving dirts away from the training ground. Mara was helping the girls arrange a demarcation on one end of the training ground. 'She is. But I guess we all have our limit to endurance. I nearly wept with the way she broke down the day she killed the Amman's Gamma,' I said as the vivid memory of Mara crying so brokenly came to my mind.'I hope whatever therapy dad intends for her and the other girls work,' Dominus
