24 - New stop: motel

"Excuse me?" Joshua said to the man at the hotel reception.

"Yes?" The man's attention shifted slightly from the newspaper in his hands to us.

"We'd like to make a phone call. Where can we find a phone?"

"It's just to the left." The man pointed towards the end of the hallway.

We followed his directions. I watched Joshua make the call and looked around, taking in every corner of the hotel. For a roadside motel, it was fairly tidy. But it had a memorial for all the people who had died there. Murders. I swallowed hard.

"We'll have to stay here tonight. The tow truck won't come until 6 a.m.," Joshua said, grabbing my hand again. We went back to the reception desk. "We'll need to find a room. Please... Do you have any vacancies?"

"One moment, I'll check." The man turned to his computer screen. "Yes, we have a vacant room. Are you a couple?"

"Yes."

"Just a warning... The location doesn't favor couples' safety."

"Oh. Sure." I noticed a nervous smile from Joshua.

"What did he mean?" I asked,
