Chapter 7
“What did you say?” I asked as I stared at her intently. She smiled and sat on the sofa, ignoring my question. “What did you say about Williams? What did you tell him and why were you even discussing with him?” I asked seriously. She smiled broadly, taunting me more. “You look so funny right now Earl, I thought nothing ever gets to you. It was just a discussion and I never said I told him anything” I shut my eyes to calm my nerves. I wouldn't want anyone to hear us argue, but her nonchalance was getting me worked up. I squinted and spoke between gritted teeth, “Don't joke with me, Venus. I married you for a reason and Williams is not someone I want to see you with because he is my biggest enemy in this company and very dangerous. If you get close to him, you will be greatly marred. You get that?” The smile on her face vanished and she nodded obediently, looking scared and different from the bold lady I had seen earlier. I wanted to walk to her, hold her and tell her I didn't mean to scare her. But now wasn't the time to be meek; I needed to be two steps ahead of Williams, who has always been a cunny man. “So what were you doing with him?” I asked again, ignoring the innocent look on her face. She swallowed and stared ahead, avoiding my eyes. “I was heading to the restroom when he stopped me and challenged me about being paid by you to be your fake wife. He knows my name and said he has researched me and my family. He asked how much you paid me and promised to double it. However, he said he would dig up dirt about me and he might harm my family” She looked at me in fear and asked, “Do you think he is capable of harming my family? You said he is dangerous. Tell me, will he harm my family? All I do is to help my family, they are all I've got and I can't drag them into any mess.” I sighed and rubbed my temple while relaxing my back on the swivel chair. I had thought she was scared because of my words, turns out she was scared of what Williams could do to her family. Does that mean she doesn't fear me at all? I pondered. “Earl! Say something” Her voice brought me back to reality. I sat up and looked straight into her eyes, “Williams is dangerous and power driven, he will do anything to get what he wants, but you have nothing to worry about if you stick to your part of the bargain. I will protect you and your family. Don't worry.” She looked at me with uncertainty. I shook my head and said, “I promise, I won't let him harm you. But if you decide to work with him because you are scared of what he could do, you will become his toy, and there will be no going back, and of course, he will always use your family to get you to do what he wants because he knows that's your weak point. So you need to trust me on this, okay?” She watched me silently before nodding. ******** Williams paced around his office, his grip on the cup containing some tequila was firm. He looked down at it and wished it was Earl’s neck, he badly wanted to end his life. He turned around and faced his personal assistant, Jabez, who had been standing and waiting for the next order. “I need every detail about that bitch, where she is from, her family background, and how she met Earl. I threatened to deal with her to get her to speak, but she wants to go the hard way and I'll love to let her know no one messes with me. I'll make her beg for mercy and give me the information I need without a reward” Jabez typed on his iPad while nodding to everything being said. He had vowed to serve Williams for as long as he was needed because he felt indebted to him for paying for his mother's brain surgery. Going against Williams was never an option, no matter what he did. Williams emptied the cup in one shot and walked back to his table, his back turned. “Tell Marcelo to meet me tonight at the usual spot, we need to speed up the game.” He waved his hands dismissively and waited till the door was shut before smashing the cup in his hands against the wall. ******* *Venus POV* The ride home was silent, and all I wanted was to take a cold shower and rest for the day, even though it wasn't night yet. Earl had ordered Ben to take me back home while he attended his other meetings. It was a welcomed development for me seeing that I was feeling monitored and choked being in the company. While some stared at me in envy, some stared in admiration, while others stared in disgust. I couldn't tell if it was just because they didn't like me, or if Earl's problem with some of the employees made it so. I needed no soothsayer to know that Earl had so many competitors, Williams was just the recognized one. His words and condescending look flashed through my brain, and I shuddered; he didn't look like someone who had a conscience. I looked towards Ben, whose eyes remained focused on the road, and I asked, “How long has Mr Williams been working in the company?” Ben looked at me through the rearview mirror, his forehead creased in confusion. “Is there a problem Ma'am?” “No, I'm just curious. I hope I'm not overstepping my boundaries by asking?” I smiled nervously. He peered at me through the mirror again and kept his eyes glued to the road. He didn't seem like he was going to answer me. After some minutes, he replied, “He is one of the founding staff of the company and has so much influence on quite a number of employees in the company. In everything you do madam, don't have any business to do with him.” My throat felt dry and I felt my heartbeat increase its thumping. I shut my eyes in a bid to erase every negative thought from my head but my phone beeped, showing I had a message. I clicked open and saw the text written in block letters, “THERE IS A PROBLEM.”Chapter 8It was a message from Fiona. I forgot all about what I had just heard and hurriedly typed back to ask what the problem was.“Kelan was at the coffee shop today and asked after you. I told him you were not around, and he demanded to know where you were. I refused to tell him, but he started causing a scene, saying I hid you somewhere..”I waited for her to continue what she was typing, but nothing else popped up for five minutes. I knew she wanted me to ask, typical of Fiona.I rolled my eyes like she could see me and typed back, “So what did you do with him?”“I had to tell him you were married and I don't know where you live. He didn't believe me but left anyway saying he would find you and kill the man who dared take you away from him.” Her response came almost immediately like she had been waiting to send that once I dropped a question.I sighed in frustration, the last thing I wanted was to cause harm to Earl. It didn't matter if he was annoying; I just couldn't let anyo
*Venus POV* “I am ready if the offer is still available,” I said into the phone the moment he picked the call. It was a difficult decision for me, but I had no choice. “I knew you would call me back, you cannot resist my charms you little thing” I could hear the mockery in his voice, I needed no soothsayer to know he had a big smirk on his face as he spoke. Who does he think he is? “I am doing this for the money, not you. You are just a lucky bastard born into wealth, you have no right to gloat.” I responded, stressing every word to pass my message. He chuckled and replied, “The fact remains that you are a nobody, and that is why I chose you. I only need you to prove a point, and once I am done, I'll discard you. You should be grateful for this opportunity and not be rude to your benefactor.” I sucked in my breath, trying not to be angry. I needed the money and resident permit, his disgusting attitude wouldn't stop me from getting what I wanted. “Mr Earl White, when shall we me
“Venus?” I heard Earl call my name and squeeze my hand, frustration laced in his voice. He raised his brow and stared into my eyes and I momentarily wondered what was so important that he had to get married to someone like me when he could have gotten a more sophisticated lady of his class.“Miss Lawrence?” The registrar called, peering out of his square-shaped glass, which rested on his nose.“Yes, I do”, I responded, fixing my gaze on Earl, who let out a breath I never knew he was holding. The wedding was finalized and Ben, Earl's driver, served as our witness. It was hard to believe that I was married at 22 years old to a man that has no respect for me.**********“What next? When will I receive the money?” I asked the moment we stepped out of the hall.Earl checked his wristwatch ignoring my question.“Earl what_”“Can you stop talking?” He cut in and looked at me irritatedly. “In there, you seemed like you were going to change your mind about the whole thing, and now you are eage
My mind was occupied with uncertainty as Ben drove silently to the house. I had questions to ask, I badly wanted to know why someone as handsome and influential as Earl would choose to marry a commoner like me.I have done some research about him, and everything I read showed he was the heir to the DanSan Construction Company, one of the top companies in the United Kingdom.Even though he lived most of his life abroad, he was always in the news. More like someone was keeping tabs on his activities. There were pictures of him with different sophisticated women on the internet, in provocative positions. If he could get those types of women, why couldn't he marry someone in his class?I rubbed my temple and sighed as I stared out of the window. A message popped on my phone screen, and I smiled, seeing that Earl had indeed sent the first payment he promised. I was in it already and the only way to get answers to my questions was to ask him.Ben drove into a compound and my mouth fell open
I felt my throat go dry and I involuntarily swallowed the huge chunk of chicken I had in my mouth. I wasn't expecting such an arrangement, at least not so soon.I stared at him in shock, trying to process what he had just said.“What? Did I pay you to come sit in my house and eat all day?” He looked back at me and asked.“I-I-”He dropped his cutlery and raised his brow at me, but I was still gathering my thoughts.I grabbed a cup of water and gulped it down at a go to ease my racing heart while he went back to his food.“Ahem,” I cleared my throat. “Meeting people at your company tomorrow? We only just got married today, I don't even have the full details of why we are married, I don't know what to say when I meet them, I don't know how to act, and you just want me to meet with them?”“Yes, we only just got married today and I paid you today. It's only normal for you to start working for what you were paid for. Don't you think?” He smirked“But I-I don't know what to say. It's too su
“Your wife? How come I didn't know about it?”Father asked with a raised brow, breaking the silence. The last thing I wanted was to get scolded in the presence of everyone.“Father, I wouldn't have enjoyed these beautiful surprised faces from everyone if you had known about it, I simply wanted to surprise you all, especially those who thought I couldn't get married” I smiled, directing my gaze to Mr Williams.“Indeed” Mr Williams scoffed, getting everyone's attention.“We are not fooled by your antics Mr White Junior, where is the evidence? And this could be a contract between you two just to get past the requirements. If you got married the right way, we would have been informed and we would have attended your wedding, especially your family. But it's obvious this is a sham and we are not fooled.”A part of me wanted to punch him in the face, but I knew that would be confirming his negative words about me.I gave a wry smile and responded, “What makes you think I wanted a big wedding
My mind went blank as I thought of what to say to him, I was scared he knew too much already, and I wasn't ready to toy with my family's safety.Despite my thumping heart, I smiled and said, “If you had so much time to go searching for my details, you should have enough time and resources to get the answers you crave without asking me, Mr Williams.”I watched as the smirk on his face disappeared and turned into anger, and then a devilish grin. “I see you are stubborn. Be ready for my wrath, Ms Venus”, he eyed and walked off.I sighed in relief as I watched his retreating figure before walking towards the restroom. It's just the first day of acting as Earl’s wife and I am already having enemies. Why do wealthy people have so many problems to deal with? I wondered.I stared at my reflection in the restroom mirror and reminded myself that I was doing it for my family and two years were just around the corner.********Earl POV*“Are you really married to her?” Father asked, staring into
